    Albert Collins - I Ain’t Drunk 12:16:25 6.09 PM

Story by: Gail NoblesIntro by: Gail NoblesPhoto: Masahiro Sumori - Own workUsage: Wikipedia  CC BY-SA 3.0In a lively, and I mean lively 1986 album called "Cold Snap," blues legend Albert Collins released the song "I Ain’t Drunk." This track is a fun and engaging piece where Collins shares a personal story through his unique style of speaking and singing. In the song, Collins responds to background singers who tease him, saying, “But you’re so high!” His confident reply is, “I ain’t drunk,” repeated several times. The music perfectly supports Collins's storytelling, allowing him to weave in and out of singing and talking. This mixture of dialogue and catchy tunes creates a memorable experience, showcasing Collins’s talent and charisma. "I Ain’t Drunk" stands out as a highlight on "Cold Snap," illustrating not just the blues but also the art of storytelling in music.Albert Collins' storytelling captivated my attention, making me eager to hear what he would say next. Each time he spoke, I found myself anticipating the next part of the story. You're listening to Podcast & Blues. I'm you're host, Gail NoblesBlues Music

Story: B57 Blues Melodies in the SkyStory by: Gail Nobles © 2025Cover Illus. By Gail NoblesMissles: Pixabay.comWillie and Rosco helped many independent blues artists gain recognition. They received numerous requests to play their records on the radio. They stored records in Rosco’s old shed for sale and traveled from county to county, promoting and performing shows. They even owned their own airplane, which had "Blues 57” written on it.After some time, their airplane was spotted by someone. A man named Freddie approached Willie and Rosco, asking them to construct planes for him. He had purchased an old building with plans to convert it into an aircraft factory. Although other workers were present, Willie and Rosco took charge due to their superior knowledge and expertise. The airplanes they built were unmatched, far outclassing any others in the world. They showcased their creations at air shows, attracting many spectators eager to see the remarkable planes. As Willie and Rosco’s success grew, they became targets. A man from Russia sought to provoke conflict with them. One day, while testing their planes, the Russian man attempted to challenge them in the sky, launching missiles in their direction.Willie yelled: Hey! What’s happening! Who’s that shooting at us!Rosco: Man I don’t know! But he’s got to go!Tune in again next time for more Blues 57. Story by Gail Nobles © 2025Blues Music

Photo: David Carrol https://flic.kr/p/oi7VFtUsage: CC BY-SA 2.0Intro: Gail NoblesStory by: Gail NoblesI wanna tell ya about a blues lady who's got the blues in her bones and the soul in her voice. Her name's Thornetta Davis, and she's a Detroit blues and rhythm and blues singer. This ain't no fly-by-night singer, see? This woman's paid her dues in the Motor City and beyond. She's opened for legends like Bonnie Raitt, Gladys Knight, and the queen herself, Etta James! Yeah, she's been rollin' with the best! She even laid down some backing vocals for Bob Seger, you dig?  She's worked with everybody from that Kid Rock fella to the late, great Alberta Adams. And Davis ain't just a sideman, she's a star in her own right! Three solo albums under her belt, and the trophies?  Forget about it! The Detroit Music Awards love this lady!  Outstanding Blues Artist, Outstanding Blues/R&B Vocalist...she's swept the joint multiple times. She's a winner - I tell you! And then she moved up to National Awards. She was nominated for a Blues Music Award in 2017 for her 'Honest Woman' album, and in 2023, she took home the Blues Music Award for 'Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year'!Now, let me tell ya about one of her tracks off that "Honest Woman" album, a song called "Am I Just a Shadow." This ain't just some bubblegum pop tune, kiddies. This is raw emotion, poured straight from the heart. The lyrics, they hit you right in the gut:"You take me in, keep me from the rest, you lock me away inside your walls of indecision..."She's singin' about a cat who's got her trapped, see?  He ain't sure about her, keeps her on a short leash."I don't know why you feel the need, to cut my heart and watch it bleed. Is that your way to make me pay for her deceptions?"This cat's carryin' baggage from some past woman, and he's makin' Thornetta pay for it. He's playin' head games. It ain't right! Then comes the chorus, and it's a killer:"Do you really know me? Or, am I just a shadow? (Just a shadow) Of someone who reminds you of that someone not to love (Not to love)"The lyrics are askin' the big question - Does this guy even see her for who she is? Or is she just a reminder of some old flame, some old heartache? This is the real deal when it comes to love! It's raw, it's honest, and it's the kind of soul-stirring stuff that'll make you wanna light a cigarette and stare into the darkness.Thornetta Davis, man, she's keepin' the blues alive. Check her out - you won't regret it! She's a true queen of the blues, puttin' her heart and soul into every note! That's all I got for ya, folks! Keep the faith and keep on rockin'! I'm Gail Nobles. Alberta Hunter-My Handy Man.. 7:11:24 6.54 PM

Story by: Gail Nobles'Now whoever said a man was hard to find Positively absolutely sure was lying Cause I just found the best man that ever wasAnd here's just a few things that he doesHe shakes my ashesGreases my grittle' Hello, I’m Gail Nobles. Welcome to Podcast and Blues. Today’s topic is Alberta Hunter. The words that you have heard me say from the beginning comes from Alberta’s track My Handyman Ain't Handy Man No More. She's singing about how her man takes care of her household chores and fixes things. He does everything for her, but the title of the song is saying that the man is not handy no more. So in the title it sounds as if Alberta is saying that he is no longer able to do all those things he has done. But in the song, there is no frustration or disappointment having someone to rely on. So she could also be saying that he's more to her than a handyman.Alberta Hunter was a jazz and blues singer and songwriter from the early 1920s to the late 1950s. After twenty years of working as a nurse, Hunter resumed her singing career in 1977. She lived to get 89 years old...Blues Music

    Aretha Franklin-Today I Sing the Blues 4:28:24 7.39 PM

Intro and podcast vocals by: Gail NoblesSong by: Aretha FranklinSong: Today I Sing the BluesToday I Sing the Blues" is a song written by Curtis Lewis and performed by Aretha Franklin. The song reached number 10 on the U.S. R&B chart in 1960.The song appeared on her 1961 album, Aretha. The lyrics say: Without a word of warningThe blues walked in this morningAnd circled around my lonely roomI didn't know why I had that sad and lonely feelingUntil my baby called and said we we're through, oohFor yesterday, this timeI sang a love storyBut today, I'm singing the blues … The lyrics start off in a very creative way. The writer talks about the blues like it's a person. That's called personification. Aretha Franklin sang the song with her own unique soulful sound. Thank you for listening to Podcast and Blues. Ed Cook - WVON, Chicago - January 29, 1966Downloaded from: archive.orgUsage: Puplic DomainCover Art by: Gail NoblesGood evening everyone. Today I'm going to talk about Ed “Nassau Daddy” Cook. Ed Cook was a beloved DJ for WVON-one of Chicago's first major black radio stations. Ed Cook played rhythm and blues. He played Sonny Boy Williamson's Bring It On Home. Sometimes he was a little upset while doing his job because things weren't quite turning out the way he wanted. I can truly understand.Ed: Hold it man! Hold it! Shoot! Messing up already!Ed Cook switched the record to Sonny Boy Williamson because the wrong record was playing. He wasn't in a good mood. Cook had things to say about the weather.(Ed Talking)Yes, I can truly understand Ed Cook. When it turns cold in the winter, things start happening, and it's aggravating.Ed Cook played B.B. King and mentioned that king used to be a DJ, and said that he was smart to quit and become a musician.(Ed Talking)Well, I hope you enjoyed getting to know something about DJ Ed Cook. I certainly did. I enjoyed hearing his conversations in the radio world. If you would like to hear the full broadcast, you can go to archive.org.I'm Gail Nobles. Goodbye friends. Alan Freed Clip: archives.orgUsage: Public DomainStory by: Gail NoblesWelcome again to Podcast and Blues. I am your host Gail Nobles. I want to talk about the sound of B.B. King from the 1950s. A much different sounding style of blues than when he was singing The Thrill Is Gone from the 1970s. Alan Freed would play BB King’s music.(Alan Freed Introduces B.B. King's song) B.B. King song Lonely and Blue reminds me of a song that Fats Domino would sing. Lonely and Blue is a song that you would call a blues ballad. There's a whole album and collection of B.B. King singing blues ballads titled B.B.-King Heart and Soul. There's a song on the album that makes me think of the Platters. The Platters, Fats Domino, and B.B. King were singing in the 1950s. They were all in the rock 'n' roll era in the genres of rhythm and blues. I'm Gail Nobles. Thank you for tuning in, and please come back again next time for more Podcast and Blues.Blues Music

He released several singles for the label before achieving his first success in 1966, when "You've Got My Mind Messed Up" reached number 7 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 63 on the pop chart. He also released the successful and critically acclaimed album You Got My Mind Messed Up.James Carr gave us a rhythm and blues soulful sound like Otis Redding except their styles were different.Otis Redding seemed like an energetic type of singer on stage. He had a more raspy voice and lots of passion.James Carr had a more emotional vocal style. He had a deep kind of voice and smooth. Both Carr and Reading were great soulful singers in the 1960s.Carr’s album You Got My Mind Messed up is a great album. There are songs such as Pouring Water on a Drowning Man, Love Attack, Coming Back To Me Baby, I Don't Want To Be Hurt Anymore just to name a few.James suffered from bipolar disorder for most of his life, but he was dubbed the world's greatest soul singer. You’re listening to the Podcast and Blues Show. Keyboardist: Gail NoblesPhoto: Wikipedia Usage: Public DomainHello! You’re listening to Podcast and Blues. Today's topic is Bobby Bland Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City.Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" is a 1974 R&B song written by Michael Price and Dan Walsh, and first recorded by Bobby "Blue" Bland for the album Dreamer. While it is ostensibly a love song, some critics and fans have also heard it as a lament on urban poverty and hopelessness, also as a lament upon the struggle to achieve one’s goals in life in the absence of enternal support. Well, I've heard Bobby Bland sing it, and I felt urban poverty and hopelessness and struggle to achieve. I see struggle today happening around me and on the news. It could be a love song too if you've lost someone that you love. Losing someone is just like losing everything.Aint No Love In The Heart Of The City. It is a great song of feeling. It makes you think about the things that are going on in the world. In the US, Bland scored a top ten hit on the Hot Soul Singles chart, where it peaked at #9, as well as peaking at #91 on the Hot 100.Im Gail Nobles. Kingfish is a great vocalist and guitar player. He sounds like a legend at the age of 24. Kingfish has what blues listeners want to hear. I couldn't wait to hear his first song on his album titled She Calls Me Kingfish. He sings: She’s flipping out on me She calls me king fish Got me on the hook If I don't quit that woman I believe my fish is cooked. I love the lyrics. If you are really wondering how Christone got the nickname Kingfish, according to Rolling Stone, one of his teachers gave him that name because he reminded him of the character Kingfish from the old sitcom Amos and Andy. I love that show. Kingfish has a right good many songs on his album. Another song that I like from his album is Hard Times. He’s singing about what we see and what he sees, Hard Times. Kingfish sings real songs and plays real guitar music. That’s what I love about him and makes us continue to listen to the blues. Their highest-charting songs include "You're Still a Young Man", "So Very Hard to Go", "What Is Hip?", and "Don't Change Horses (in the Middle of a Stream). I love their single “Diggin on James Brown”. My favorite part of the lyrics is when they say:Ya know the more things change, The more they stay the same.It may be a different age, But I’m on the same page. Cause one thing that I’ve found, I’ll still be Diggin on James Brown.” You can hear “Diggin on James Brown” by Tower of Power on Spotify. It’s a great song. You’re listening to Podcast & Blues.
