In this episode Leon and Russell are joined by Dr Ian Hall, a Leeds fan in exile in East Sussex. A Leeds United fan since 1977, Ian is currently writing a book on the club's late 70s and early 80s era when the club entered a slump, going from European Cup finalists to relegation to the English second tier. At the club's core there is a long tradition of Welsh players and Ian discusses some of those players from his formative years on the Elland Road terraces, before taking a deep dive into the current 'Welsh Mafia' comprising Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu and Daniel James, as well as touching on Charlie Crew who recently joined Doncaster Rovers on loan. On the occasion of this season's FA Cup semi-final between Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion, 40 years after the two clubs faced each other in the 1983 final, our Leon Barton wrote for Nation Cymru about the sole Welshman to figure in that final - Alan Davies. Davies played for Manchester United, Newcastle and Swansea and won 13 Cymru caps but injuries hampered his career and he eventually took his own life in 1990 aged only 30. Jamie Yates from Everton Heritage Society joins the podcast to share some of the research he is doing into Oswestry-born George Farmer who won two Wales caps in the 1880s. Farmer was one of Everton’s two original professionals; the first international footballer to play for Everton; and is a key figure in the club's early professional era. On Saturday 23 March, the Everton Heritage Society are rededicating Farmer's gravestone at Anfield Cemetery in Liverpool, followed by a reception at which The Mighty George Farmer Band will play an acoustic set.
