What Stinks?
#NEWS - NORTH JERSEY - Recently North Jersey travelers have noticed an odd smell between Morris & Passaic Counties. Berkshire Valley Road runs from Route 15 to Route 23 - stretching 12 miles from Wharton to Newfoundland with Oak Ridge in the middle. This road is traveled by many to access Sussex County as well via Reservoir Road to Route 23 N. Once a driver has left Jefferson TWP in Morris County (when traveling into Passaic) - BVR then changes into Oak Ridge Road by bridge thus connecting the Counties over the Pequannock River. There is also another connection point - a bridge at Cozy Lake & Oak Ridge Roads. At one point Davenport Road was a crossing point over the river as well. The Newark Watershed - which consists of Oak RIdge Reservoir, Echo Lake, Clinton Reservoir, & Canistear Reservoir owned by the city of Newark - originally purchased in the 1890s to preserve & later provide water to the largest city in the Garden State. This body of water in Oak RIdge can be seen from the roadways as others are. Newark is located in Essex County. The Dam recently underwent maintenance that caused the reservoir to be drained - several relics of a past life appeared where the body of water now sits. An old bridge brought the attention of many people. The reservoir has since been refilled & repaired according to ABC7NY. The smell is described by some as “horrible”. Some drivers coming from Morris County say one can smell the odor when entering Passaic County & vice versa - thus leaving one to believe it is in the middle. CBS reported in 2023 on ‘smelly odors’ coming from Falls Lake in Wake County, NC - residents mention it smelling like sulfur or rotten eggs at a nearby river. According to the US Army Core of Engineers 3 factors can cause bad odors near bodies of water: Bacteria Growth, Low Oxygen, & Gas Release. Two Counties, one bad smell, hundreds of unhappy commuters! Dozens of Practical Tests Cancelled!
#NEWS - WAYNE, NJ - Dozens of practical exams were canceled today in Passaic County with no prior notice. Students, volunteers, & family members were upset after they waited in traffic then stood in line outside their dedicated testing facility only to find out there was no test. In more recent months NJ reinstated the requirement for a practical exam to be completed in addition to the classroom hours & a written exam associated with cosmetology & manicuring licenses in The Garden State. On 8/22/26 The Passaic County Technical Institute was set to host several cohorts of students batched together to complete their required in-person portion, but this did not occur. Examiners mentioned that the building could not host the group on 8/22/26 & plans will be made for rescheduling then will be sent out via email to practical test-takers. No exact reason was given for the cancellation. Several permit holders were concerned about the validity of their permits - which allows a student to work while obtaining a license - which for some, might expire prior to obtaining a license thus leaving a gap in the students’ career path - potentially causing ineligibility for future exam scheduling or work. Students are still waiting for an email listing their next exam day, time, & location along with information regarding a potential grace period for expired permit holders that were set to test at 8:30am on 8/22/26 at PCTI. Severe Weather
#NEWS – OAK RIDGE, NJ – Severe thunderstorms across northern New Jersey are causing power outages for some residents on Saturday, July 18, 2026. According to residents in Morris County, power has been intermittently going on and off throughout the day. Many New Jersey residents rely on backup generators during severe weather. If the power goes out, residents are encouraged to monitor local weather updates using a battery-powered radio. Travelers should also use caution, as heavy rain and thunderstorms may create hazardous driving conditions this weekend. As of 12:00 p.m. on July 18, 2026, Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) reported scattered outages around the Lake Hopatcong area, with estimated restoration times of approximately 2:30 p.m. The utility also reported that more than 22,000 customers were without power in Sussex County and about 3,000 customers were affected in Morris County.
