Romancing The Stone: Michael Douglas, OG Rat Boy
SUBCATEGORY: GETTING SOME ACTIONThis week we're heading deep into the Colombian jungle for our first action adventure romantic-comedy, Romancing the Stone (1984). This movie is a romance novel, a treasure hunt, and a comedy all rolled into one, and we are here for it! Join us as we discuss how both Elena AND Chelsea got Douglased by the original rat boy, Michael Douglas, why Kathleen Turner on the other hand should never be described as "mousy", and how this movie single-handedly launched Zemeckis' career and gave him free reign to make Back To The Future! Plus we discuss our love for Danny DeVito, some behind the scenes secrets and mayhem that took place with one of the crocodiles on set, and ponder why men are so obsessed with boats. If you love romantic comedies, '80s movies, adventure films, Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas, treasure hunts, and mudslides, then this episode is for you! This episode was edited by Nick Duke: https://www.instagram.com/n_dukie/ Follow Podstruck on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podstruckpodGet bonus episodes on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/Podstruckpod Hosted on Acast. Forgetting Sarah Marshall: Remembering Jason Segel's Dick
DOWN IN THE DUMPSThis week on Podstruck: A Rom-Com Rewind, we close out our collection of break up romantic comedies with the Jason Segel 2008 romp Forgetting Sarah Marshall. This Judd Apatow produced comedy doesn't shy away from meandering for the sake of hilarious bits, even though his initial writing advice was not focused on the comedy. Chelsea and Elena also dive into the great divergence of Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell who honor the old brunette vs. blonde trope, the connection that this movie has to Broadcast News, how Mila Kunis' on-set jet ski accident cost her a role in another film, and the douches we've both dated (inspired by Russell Brand's d-bag rock star Aldous Snow). It's a movie stacked with hilarious side characters proving there's a reason we can never forget Forgetting Sarah Marshall. PATREON EXCLUSIVE: Love, Simon
THIS IS A SNEAK PEAK OF OUR PATREON BONUS EPISODE - OUT TODAY at Patreon.Com/PodstruckPodHappy Pride Y'all! This week Love, Simon gets the Podstruck treatment as we revisit the groundbreaking 2018 LGBTQ+ romantic comedy starring Nick Robinson, Alexandra Shipp, Katherine Langford, Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, Tony Hale, Natasha Rothwell and an absolutely stacked supporting cast. We discuss why Love, Simon was such a milestone for queer rom-coms, which character we thought Simon ACTUALLY had the most chemistry with, and whether or not the actor who played Martin is Ryan Gosling's doppelganger.Along the way, we gush over Jennifer Garner, debate the ethics of Simon’s decisions, celebrate the movie’s charming ensemble, and unpack why this heartfelt coming-of-age romance became a modern rom-com favorite. Plus we talk about: the intense emotional highs and lows of high school, our slutty Poison Ivy Halloween costumes, and why asking Blue to meet him on the ferris wheel was another dick move by Simon. If you love romantic comedies, coming-of-age stories, and a movie set in Atlanta, then this episode is for you! I Want You Back: Seduce & Destroy
DOWN IN THE DUMPSThis week on Podstruck: A Rom-Com Rewind, we're covering the Amazon Original Movie, I Want You Back (2022). This delightfully messy rom-com stars Jenny Slate and Charlie Day as two freshly dumped strangers who team up to win back their exes and accidentally catch feelings along the way. Elena and Chelsea discuss why Jenny Slate is an underrated rom-com QUEEN, why Ben Mackenzie's surprise cameo is oh so delightful, and we also debate whether this movie crams in one subplot too many (looking at you, theater kid with the gay dads). We also celebrate the surprisingly great Atlanta setting, and spend an entirely reasonable amount of time discussing why ripped Manny Jacinto with long hair really works for us. Come for the breakup scheming, stay for the stellar cast, and a rom-com that reminds us that this genre is not dead! High Fidelity: Boy Fleabag
CATEGORY: DOWN IN THE DUMPSPodstruck kicks off a new collection of rom-coms all about finding love after getting dumped with the John Cusack classic High Fidelity. We look back at this music-filled movie from 2000 with a 2026 lens - is the main character a total sexist jerk who deserves to die alone or is he a boyish cutie who just needs a little soul searching? We discuss whether Stephen Frears should have set this Nick Hornby adaptation in Seattle, the parallels to Say Anything, why Laura was miscast, how mad we are that the Zoe Kravitz TV show High Fidelity only got one season, and we pitch alternate endings for who Rob should've ended up with based on chemistry. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind: Love, Lobotomize, Repeat
CATEGORY: UH-OH AMNESIAThis week we’re diving into one of the most beloved, and artistically singular, romantic movies of all time: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), directed by Michel Gondry and written by Charlie Kaufman. Now, is this a rom-COM? Maybe, maybe not! But we are covering it regardless! This movie stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as Joel and Clementine, two exes who literally erase each other from their memories, only to discover they just can't quit each other. Elena and Chelsea break down why Eternal Sunshine still feels groundbreaking over 20 years later, Elena's theory that Charlie Kaufman hates all of his exes, Michel Gondry’s use of ingenious in camera practical effects, and why Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey playing against type makes us only love this movie more. Plus we gush over Kirsten Dunst, unpack the movie’s quietly horrifying consent issues, and Elena tells the story of her real-life run-in with Michel Gondry. If you love emotionally unavailable sad boys and ASMR then this episode is for you! This episode was edited by Nick Duke: https://www.instagram.com/n_dukie/ Follow Podstruck on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podstruckpodGet bonus episodes on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/Podstruckpod Hosted on Acast. Joining us is TV writer, producer and podcaster, Elizabeth Laime from the hit podcasts Beth’s Dead and Nobody’s Listening, Right? as we break down one of the most absurd ’80s rom-com plots ever to grace our screens. Plus: Roddy McDowall stealing scenes as Goldie’s sassy butler, Kurt's ingenious closet invention, and our love of a little upstairs/downstairs romance! 50 First Dates: Pineapple of Lies
CATEGORY: UH-OH AMNESIAIn this week's episode we cover the 2004 Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore rom-com, 50 First Dates, the movie that dared to ask, what if we redid Groundhog Day but made it even more ethically questionable? We'll travel back to 2004 and discuss whether the animal jokes hold up (or ever made sense to begin with?), why Rob Schneider should maybe not be playing a Hawaiian man despite being a quarter Filipino, and why even with a rocky act one, we still can't help but enjoy this movie. Plus, we debate how you pronounce Barrymore... if ANYONE has the answer to this please let us know immediately. This episode was edited by Nick Duke: https://www.instagram.com/n_dukie/ Follow Podstruck on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podstruckpod/Get bonus episodes on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/Podstruckpod Hosted on Acast. CATEGORY: LOTHARIOS IN LOVEWe continue our collection of playboys turned loverboys this week with the Rock Hudson Doris Day classic Pillow Talk, with special guest Joe Randazzo (The Onion, @midnight).
