The Right to Strike - Rights Rorts and Rants

Rights, Rorts and Rants presented by Blue Mountains Unions & Community via Radio Blue Mountains community radio on 11th April 2019. Rights, Rorts and Rants, where you can find out about your rights, how they're rorted and we rant about what you can do to stand up for your rights. We also report on issues of local importance. Tune in on 89.1FM or stream on https://www.rbm.org.au/. Tonight on Rights, Rorts and Rants we hear about attacks on our right to withdraw our labour and hear some views on how we can change the rules and restore that right. Alex Claassens, NSW Secretary of the Rail Tram and Bus Union, speaking at a Politics in the Pub in August last year gives us the background of the industrial action by rail workers that was suspended by the Fair Work Commission. In February this year Erima Dall from the Right to Strike campaign spoke at another Politics in the Pub "Change the Rules" about the right to strike. Tonight we feature an interview with Erima by Fran Dyson on her views on how we ensure those rights are restored after the election - even if Labor win. And Trish Doyle, Member for Blue Mountains in the NSW Parliament and Vice President of BMUC, delivers a report RTBU Industrial Officer Imogen Szumer wrote for us for the August Politics in the Pub. And, in the interests of "balance" we also have a special guest, a Gladys fan and "supporter" of the Berejiklian Government. (satire alert) Blue Mountains Unions & Community stand for social justice, workers, full employment, equality and the environment. Politics in the Pub - Deaths at Work (all tracks in one mp3 file)

A simple wooden cross marks the spot where 37-year-old Paul Walsh was killed while working with a small drilling team on the NBN rollout in Station Street, Katoomba. He was one of 178 people killed at work in Australia last year. https://goo.gl/s5Z6br https://goo.gl/EEo9Qu Workers International Day of Mourning is held annually, and this year BMUC is holding a special event to remember the dead and fight for the living. The Speakers: RITA MALLIA, President CFMEU Construction & General Division, NSW Branch: "On average across Australia one construction worker is killed each week and many more are seriously injured. Past experience shows us that the re-establishment of the Australian Building and Construction Commission will reduce safety on sites and lead to more deaths ,as it's focused on stopping union access to sites rather than ensuring companies follow the rule of law in maintaining safe worksites". EMMA MAIDEN, Assistant Secretary, Unions NSW: "Workers are being killed and maimed at alarming rates. Yet the NSW Government has decimated the system that was meant to provide support for injured workers until they get back on their feet". ROWAN KERNEBONE, Co-ordinator Injured Workers Support Network, is an advocate for a fairer system of workers compensation for injured and ill workers and their families. The ISWSN's priority is to help injured workers gain the services to which they are entitled Speakers also respond to questions from the audience. https://bmuc.blogspot.com.au/2017/04/deaths-at-work-politics-in-pub-29-april.html
