It's kind of wild to think I'm already 100 episodes deep into this one, but here we are... I decided to talk about concerts and bands I've seen for this one and I couldn't even come close to including something from every band I've seen perform. There were some tough choices. Also, I apparently love seeing heavy music above all else in concert...

Pop Your Culture is back after two weeks with a brand new show! I was hoping to catch up and get a bit of inspiration but so much happened I didn't really know where to start. In this one I talk about how this is the 99th episode, the US election, the Mike Tyson/Jake Paul fight, the looming threat of WWIII, the bomb cyclone, and the anniversary of the deaths of JFK and Aldous Huxley. There's all that plus a great selection of music. It's good to be back!

This one is dedicated to Thelema, the occult practice formalised by Aleister Crowley. This is where "Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be the Whole of the Law" comes from as it permeates pop culture. I'll also talk about Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin because their connection to Crowley and Thelema is quite legendary. I'll also explain the numerological significance of 93/93 (the true inspiration of the show).

This week's edition of Pop Your Culture is an exploration of the Desert Rock sub-genre of rock music. Largely connected to the Pal Desert scene in California, its influence has spread around the world (1000mods are from Greece and in the show). This music was born out of legendary "generator parties" out in the desert where a bunch of people would get together, fire up generators, party, and play heavy music. This music is typically born of Black Sabbath and psychedelics

The theme of Pop Your Culture this week is Summer Vacation 2024. Zelda and Edward join me as co-hosts and we all pick some music to share. Edward dug out the oldest music with requests for Marty Robbins, Zelda picks new to her grunge rock (that I grew up with), and I get nostalgic about songs I remember coming out in summers when I was a teen. Zelda and I also get into a little bit of sassy trash talking. Music related, of course...

This week is a Garage Rock special because Jack White released a surprise album last week. There's no cover art, no album title, no song titles...it was released through Third Man Records directly at their stores. Jack told the public to rip the album and share it online. I tracked it down and have been listening to it multiple times a day for the last week. And, today, we're going to check out the whole thing on the show. We're also checking out Garage Rock classics from The Kingsmen, The Seeds, The Cramps, The Stooges, The White Stripes, and a lot more!

We're going to continue being loud on this week's Pop Your Culture because this one is called "In the Wake of an Attempted Assassination". How could we not talk about what happened in the US? The shots fired at Trump have caused further division amongst an already divided population. And that's just here in Canada. In between talking about what happened I play a lot of loud and politically influenced music. I also play some Tenacious D because I've enjoyed the band for a long time despite calls for them to be cancelled.

Pop Your Culture is up next starting at 3pm with a show I've called "A Love Song for the Open Road". This one is inspired by an article I read about California looking at creating a tax or surcharge based on each mile of road driven. Coming from the place I consider the home of hot rod and outlaw biker culture, it seems like the death of the search for one's self in the desolate high-speed miles, the cool country road machine meditation under the moon, the roar of exhilaration through the veins coming out of corners... I love driving and riding and this show is a love song to that. Nearly all the material in this show is old-school rock and roll using hot rod culture as influence.

This week's Pop Your Culture honors the 35th Anniversary of the release of Nirvana's debut LP "Bleach". The album was released on Sub-Pop on June 15 of 1989 so we are going to play the complete album. While Nirvana may have seemed an anomaly as they propelled from the Pacific Northwest to the world stage, in 1989 they were very much a part of a surprisingly cohesive scene. We're going to check out releases also from 1989 from Seattle area bands and we'll find that grunge--real grunge--was a lot different than cardigan alternative rock in the mainstream a few years later.
