Walter Masterson is one of 18 people arrested at the New York State Capitol with a court date in Albany this week, charged with 2nd degree Obstructing Governmental Administration.  Masterson has about 5 million followers on social media, known for his political satire, street interviews and poking fun at a variety of political ideals.   "I don't really get a lot of views off of this," Masterson told CBS6. "I just felt like this is something where I wanted to be on the right side of history." He said business-wise, between a speeding ticket on I87 and the Summons to Albany City Court, he may lose money on the endeavor. Arrest and Inside the Capitol Protest – [0:00:13 – 0:00:30]Tom introduces Walter Masterson, fresh off his arrest at the New York State Capitol, and sets up the protest inside Governor Hochul’s office. Why Protest Hochul: CLCPA, Pipelines, Data Centers – [0:00:30 – 0:02:11]Walter explains the sit‑in at Hochul’s office, New York’s climate law (CLCPA), and how pipelines and AI data centers fit into the fight. From Climate Progress to Climate Backslide – [0:04:25 – 0:06:45]They question whether New York ever fully implemented the CLCPA and warn that Hochul’s moves could undo existing climate progress. Jobs, Fossil Fuels, and Hochul’s Political Identity – [0:06:45 – 0:09:11]Walter disputes the jobs case for oil and gas, says renewables are cheaper long‑term, and claims Hochul is governing more like a Republican. Protest Size, Public Opinion, and Donor Politics – [0:09:11 – 0:12:22]Walter reflects on only 18 arrests, unexpected support from some MAGA voters, and argues Hochul is mainly serving donors, not the public. Moral Stand and Challenging the Duopoly – [0:12:22 – 0:16:43]He frames his arrest as a moral stand that hurts his business, then broadens out to criticize unchecked power and the two‑party duopoly. Platforming Voices and What Comes Next – [0:16:43 – end]Walter explains how he uses interviews to amplify populist, working‑class voices, expose insidious actors, and previews future protest plans. Carrie Woerner (D-Round Lake), on New York's state of sports betting, February 6th, 2026

With the Super Bowl days away, it's estimated $1.7 billion will be wagered this year. With that in mind, CBS6 sat down with NYS Assembly's Standing Committee on Racing & Wagering Chair Carrie Woerner (D-Round Lake) on Thursday.  "When we look at the revenue reports associated with mobile sports wagering, it is a steep slope. Every month we see more and more people playing on mobile sports wagering, or people who have been playing more frequently, the amount of money wagered in New York is going up," Woerner said. That means more revenue for the State of New York, which broke a national record for revenue in 2025, gaining nearly $2 billion from Jan 2024-Nov 2025.   "That is part of the motivation in every state for legalizing different forms of wagering, and that's been true since we legalized para mutual wagering at race tracks way back when," Woerner said. "I do think that we are seeing, however, the the emergence of significant social costs associated with the intensity of sports wagering, and so I think at this point we really need to be and New York is not the only state experiencing this. Other states are as well. Thinking back to, okay, what are the guardrails that need to be in place so that we can that we can avoid the high social costs associated with gambling, that we can take it back to it's supposed to be entertainment and not how somebody thinks they're going to pay the bills and and the intensity of the wagering, we know from the hotline calls that people are are chasing that next bet because they they need to pay the rent." Woerner says 77 bills are in Committee right now, most of which are in regards to problem gambling.  She discussed:-"Affordability windows"-banning prop bets/unders-parlays-advertising bans (SAFE Bet Act) -Polymarket/Kalshi-NYRA's CAW move -Gaming Commission's Role Learn more about your ad choices. Since the government shutdown began, the U.S. Travel Association website has featured an increasing "Travel Spending Lost Since the Government Shutdown" counter. As of Thursday's conversation, the number had breached $3 billion. Hansen says hotels, small businesses, and a variety of other industries have been impacted. "A billion dollars a week every hour the shutdown goes on," Hansen told CBS6. "It comes from a number of different things, delays, cancelations that we've seen historically during the shutdown, modeling what it's costing us. It's due to government and federal workers not traveling, contractors not traveling, and historically, the largest purchaser of travel services anywhere in the country is the federal government, national parks, which have a huge economic cost as well. And these are just piling up all across the country." Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY17) on potential Government shutdown, September 30th, 2025

The Federal Government is on the verge of a shutdown, as Congressional leaders will need to agree on a stopgap funding plan by midnight on Tuesday. CBS6 spoke with NY-17 Congressman Mike Lawler (R) on Monday: "What's a non negotiable for you at this point that you think you need to hold the line?" "We have passed Continuing Resolutions to keep the government funded year after year after year when Republicans and Democrats have been in charge. This is a straightforward, clean CR to keep the government funded through November 21 so that Congress can finish its appropriations negotiations between the House and the Senate and the White House to pass a final Fiscal Year 26 appropriations package. What has changed here is that Democrats in Washington, and in particular Senate [Minority] Leader Chuck Schumer, have changed their position. They no longer believe in clean CRs. They want to demand a pound of flesh in exchange for their votes, and that's just not the way that government should function. We have a responsibility, as my Democratic colleagues have said, time and again, to keep the government funded to ensure there are no disruptions to things like Social Security or veterans benefits or border security or our military, and to make sure that we are doing the work of the American people. We do not want to have a government shutdown which will create chaos in the marketplace and in our economy, which is totally unwarranted and unnecessary. There is a clean CR on the table that already passed the house. All the Senate has to do is follow their own rules. You need 60 votes to break the filibuster and pass a clean CR, which the Democrats did every time during Joe Biden's presidency. The only difference now is that Donald Trump is president, and Chuck Schumer seemingly is worried about a primary from his left." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
