In America, where Christianity is still the most common religion, women are vacating churches. In the past decade, 16 million women have left the church. Younger women are disaffiliating from religion faster than men. For some women, leaving is like a dramatic divorce; for others, as one woman tells Stankorb, it's more like women and the church "stopped calling each other."Exploring trends from the 1980s to today, Damned If She Does is an intimate account of women whose stories got missed during the Christian Right's headline-grabbing rise to power. Their exodus is marked by harm, disillusionment, and drift: from pastors' wives and a national Christian TV show host, to girls whose horrific abuse gives another face to the Catholic sex abuse crisis. Some couldn't stand by a church that cast out their queer friends. Others were maligned for who they loved. Churches with strong opinions on sexual purity and abortion stood beside men with histories of assault. With horror, women who loved the church watched the rise of Christian nationalism and saw their faith bastardized.Finally, they've had enough. Some are atheists. Others are forging new spiritual avenues through astrology or energy work or connection to their ancestors. Some have a Christian faith they no longer entrust to an institution. Attuned to emotional subtlety, women's agency, and religious longing, Stankorb asks what happens when a woman realizes that she's damned both if she stays and if she leaves. In this episode, I revisit my original reporting and break down everything that's happened since: the March 2024 reindictment that added new charges, the delayed trial, the August 2026 guilty verdict, and Judge Barry Tidwell's sentence of life in prison without parole for Benjamin Garlick. Shaantal Garlick was convicted of facilitation and child neglect charges and is now in custody as well. Both will be sentenced on their remaining charges November 10, 2026.This case involves an IFB (Independent Fundamentalist Baptist) traveling minister who preached across Texas, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, and Arkansas, and was supported by ministries including First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana. What they weren’t told is that their pastor, Kenny Baldwin, was actively being investigated by state police about sending nude images of himself to a 15-year-old boy.Here’s a quick timeline of the actual events behind Kenny Baldwin’s absence.May 2, 2026 — The York Criminal Investigation Unit began investigating Pastor Kenny Baldwin for sending explicit images to a minor.June 1, 2026 — Baldwin’s alleged victim told police that Baldwin had sent him two more explicit images of himself.June 7, 2026 — A video sermon from Pastor Kenny Baldwin, titled “Strength in Weakness,” was streamed for the Sunday evening service at Crossroads Baptist Church. This would be Baldwin’s last sermon at CBC.June 9, 2026 — Baldwin confessed to two individuals that he had sent nude images of himself to a minor.June 12, 2026 — Pennsylvania State Police in York County interviewed Pastor Kenny Baldwin. He confessed to sending the images. When asked how old his victim was, Kenny said, "probably 15" and added that he could forget that the boy was that young because he acted "so much older."June 21, 2026 — During a Sunday morning church service, Pastor Lou Baldwin explains Kenny Baldwin’s absence as being due to “mental, physical, and spiritual” battle, and the lingering effects of a prior COVID diagnosis.
