How I Plan to Turn an Old School Into a Natural History Museum | My 3-Stage Plan

🏛️ WHAT WOULD IT TAKE TO TURN AN OLD SCHOOL BUILDING INTO A NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM?In this episode of the Prehistoric Life Podcast, I'm taking you inside my current vision for a future natural history and paleontology museum in the Bull Street District of Columbia, South Carolina. For years, I've talked about my goal of creating a museum where people can experience dinosaurs, fossils, geology, and the incredible history of life on Earth. But one of the biggest questions has always been:What would the museum actually look like?Today, I'm revealing my three-stage floor plan and development concept for transforming an old school building into a future museum.Instead of trying to build everything at once, this plan looks at how the museum could potentially grow in stages—starting with the first exhibits and eventually expanding into a larger experience filled with prehistoric life, fossils, educational opportunities, and more.🦖 In this episode, I discuss:• The old school building I'm envisioning for the project• Why the Bull Street District could be an exciting location• My three-stage approach to developing the museum• How the floor plan could evolve as the project grows• Potential exhibit spaces and future expansion• My vision for dinosaurs, fossils, geology, and natural history• And how this could eventually become a major destination for prehistoric life in South CarolinaThis is still a vision and developing plan, but I wanted to share how I'm thinking about taking this dream from an idea and turning it into something that could potentially grow step by step.🦴 SHOUTOUT TO MEGA CROC!A huge shoutout to Mega Croc for being part of the inspiration and conversation surrounding dinosaur displays, museums, and the incredible world of prehistoric life!Be sure to check out Mega Croc's YouTube channel:Mega Croc on YouTube🦖 HELP BUILD THE FIRST EXHIBIT!I'm also currently raising support for the first physical exhibit in this larger museum journey: a full-scale dynamic scene featuring an Allosaurus jimmadseni pursuing a juvenile Stegosaurus. This exhibit is intended to be transportable, allowing it to potentially be used for educational events and public appearances as the larger museum vision continues to develop. The Kickstarter campaign is seeking roughly $15,000 toward construction and related costs.👉 Support the Kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/palmettopaleonmuseum/help-bring-prehistoric-life-to-south-carolina?ref=d54almHelp Bring Prehistoric Life to South CarolinaEven if you can't contribute financially, sharing the campaign helps tremendously!Every museum has to start somewhere. This is my plan to start.🎙️ Prehistoric Life PodcastExploring the past. The Academy of Natural Sciences Is Closing | Support Your Local Museums

🏛️ ANOTHER NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM IS CLOSING.https://www.inquirer.com/education/academy-of-natural-sciences-closing-museum-philadelphia-20260901.htmlOn September 1, 2026, Drexel University and the Academy of Natural Sciences announced that the Academy's museum in Philadelphia will close at the end of September, ending nearly 200 years of public museum operations. The museum opened to the public in 1828.And honestly… this one hurts. In this episode of the Prehistoric Life Podcast, I talk about the closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, what it means for the natural history and paleontology community, and why I think this should be a wake-up call for all of us who care about museums. The Academy isn't simply disappearing as a scientific institution. Its collections, research, and scientific mission will continue. The institution currently cares for more than 19 million biological specimens, fossils, archives, and other scientific resources, including more than 73,000 type specimens. But the public museum is closing. And that distinction matters. The Academy and Drexel have cited declining visitation, changes in audience behavior following the COVID-19 pandemic, and increasing operating costs as major factors behind the decision. In this episode, I discuss my frustration with the situation, including the larger challenges facing museums when funding becomes increasingly difficult and major academic institutions have to make difficult financial decisions. But I also want to look at our responsibility as museum visitors.Because here's the uncomfortable truth:If we don't support our museums, we can't expect them to survive. If you have a natural history museum in your city—GO VISIT IT.If there's a small paleontology museum nearby—GO VISIT IT.Buy a ticket.Become a member.Buy something from the gift shop.Donate if you can.Bring your kids.Bring your friends.Share their posts.Tell people about them.Don't wait until the museum announces that it's closing to suddenly realize how much it meant to you.And most importantly, if you are able to visit the Academy of Natural Sciences before the closure, please go.The museum's regular public hours are scheduled to end September 27, with the institution's announcement stating that the museum itself will close September 30.🦖 Dinosaur museums.🦴 Natural history museums.🌎 Science museums.🏛️ Local museums. They need us.This episode isn't meant to attack the people working at the Academy or pretend that there is one simple explanation for an incredibly complicated financial situation. It's a rallying cry.Support your local museum before you lose it.Because every museum that closes means fewer places where the next generation can discover dinosaurs, fossils, geology, biology, evolution, and the incredible history of our planet. And as someone who dreams of someday creating a natural history museum of my own, this hits especially close to home.🎙️ Prehistoric Life PodcastExploring the past. The First Dinosaur Exhibit Is Being Built! | Help Bring Prehistoric Life to SC

🦖 THE FIRST STEP TOWARD MY MUSEUM STARTS HERE.If you want to support: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/palmettopaleonmuseum/help-bring-prehistoric-life-to-south-carolina?ref=d54almFor years, I've talked about my dream of creating a paleontology and natural history museum in South Carolina. Now, I'm finally taking the first real physical step toward making that dream a reality. In this episode of the Prehistoric Life Podcast, I'm announcing the launch of my Kickstarter campaign to help create the first major exhibit for what I hope will eventually become a permanent museum in Columbia, South Carolina. And that first exhibit is going to be something very special:🦖 Allosaurus jimmadseni🦕 Juvenile StegosaurusThe planned exhibit will depict an Allosaurus jimmadseni pursuing a juvenile Stegosaurus in a dynamic, lifelike scene. Rather than simply displaying two skeletons, the goal is to show these animals as living creatures interacting with one another. The behavior depicted will be a hypothetical scientific reconstruction, and I'll explain in the episode why I think it's important for museums to distinguish between what we know, what we have evidence for, and what represents our best scientific interpretation.🏛️ BUT THIS IS BIGGER THAN ONE EXHIBITThe ultimate goal is a permanent natural history and paleontology museum in Columbia, South Carolina, where visitors can experience:🦴 Full-scale prehistoric animal reconstructions🔬 Authentic fossils and scientific specimens🏛️ Research and fossil preparation🌎 Prehistoric life from South Carolina and around the world🎓 Educational programs and experiences🦖 Dynamic exhibits that bring prehistoric ecosystems to lifeThe first Allosaurus and Stegosaurus exhibit is meant to be transportable and reusable, allowing it to potentially visit schools, educational events, and public appearances before eventually becoming part of the permanent museum.💰 HELP MAKE THE FIRST STEP POSSIBLEThe Kickstarter goal is approximately $15k, which will help cover the construction of the Allosaurus and juvenile Stegosaurus, transportation, protective materials, Kickstarter-related costs, and other expenses involved in bringing the exhibit to life.👉 SUPPORT THE KICKSTARTER HERE:Help Bring Prehistoric Life to South Carolina – KickstarterAnd if you aren't able to contribute financially, sharing the campaign is just as important.Send it to a dinosaur-loving friend.Send it to a teacher.Send it to a museum enthusiast.Share it on social media.Every person who learns about this project helps build the community behind it.I'm just one person who grew up loving dinosaurs and decided that instead of saying "someone should build this," I'm going to try.Every museum has to start somewhere. This is our starting point.🎙️ Prehistoric Life PodcastExploring the past. Can We Build a Natural History Museum Together? | My Kickstarter Plan

Can We Build a Natural History Museum Together? | My Kickstarter PlanDescription🦖 WHAT IF WE COULD BUILD A NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM TOGETHER?For years, I've dreamed of creating my own natural history museum—a place where people can experience dinosaurs, fossils, geology, and the incredible story of life on Earth. In this episode of the Prehistoric Life Podcast, I'm talking about an idea that could help turn that dream into a reality: launching a Kickstarter campaign to help establish the museum. The long-term goal is to create a natural history museum in the Bull Street District of Columbia, South Carolina, focused on bringing prehistoric life and natural history to the public. This isn't something that can happen overnight. There is a tremendous amount of work, planning, fundraising, and preparation that needs to happen first. But every great museum has to start somewhere. And this could be the beginning.🏛️ In this episode, I talk about:• Why I'm considering a Kickstarter• What the money could help establish• My vision for a natural history museum• The importance of building a community around this project• What I want the museum to eventually become• How supporters could potentially become part of the journey• And my long-term ambitions for creating a museum in Columbia, South CarolinaThis isn't just about building another museum. It's about creating a place where people can see dinosaurs, discover fossils, learn about Earth's history, and become inspired by paleontology and natural history. If you've ever wanted to help make something like this happen, this is your chance to hear the idea from the beginning.🦴 This is only the beginning.🎙️ Prehistoric Life PodcastExploring the past. Putting Dinosaurs Back Together | Comparative vs. Dynamic Articulation

🦴 Comparative ArticulationI define comparative articulation as a full specimen, or most of a specimen, articulated primarily to display its biological structure—essentially answering the question:"What are they supposed to look like?"The goal is to clearly communicate the animal's anatomy and allow visitors to understand how the bones fit together.🏃 Dynamic ArticulationDynamic articulation takes a different approach. I define it as reconstructing the entire skeleton in a dynamic, lifelike posture designed to demonstrate natural biomechanics—essentially showing:"What did they do?"Rather than simply presenting the skeleton, the display attempts to capture an action or behavior, giving visitors a sense of how the animal may have moved and interacted with its environment. In this episode, I'll discuss the differences between these approaches, the strengths and weaknesses of each, and why I think both have an important place in modern natural history museums.Should a dinosaur skeleton stand in a scientifically clear anatomical pose?Or should it be running, fighting, feeding, hunting, or performing some other behavior? And ultimately, can a museum display do both?🎙️ Prehistoric Life PodcastExploring the past. Why Jurassic Park Did More for Paleontology Than Any Documentary

🦖 Why does Jurassic Park still captivate millions of people over 30 years after its release? In this video essay, I explore why Jurassic Park may be one of the most important pieces of dinosaur media ever created—not because it was the most scientifically accurate, but because it inspired something even more powerful: wonder. While documentaries teach us incredible facts about prehistoric life, Jurassic Park gave audiences an emotional connection to dinosaurs that inspired countless people to visit museums, pursue careers in paleontology, create art, write stories, and fall in love with the ancient world. As the essay argues, facts help us understand dinosaurs—but wonder is what makes us care.In this episode, I discuss:🦕 Why Jurassic Park became a cultural phenomenon🎬 The difference between information and inspiration🦴 The lasting impact of the "Jurassic Park Effect" on museums and paleontology📚 Why storytelling is just as important as scientific accuracy🌍 How movies, documentaries, and imagination work together to inspire future generations of dinosaur enthusiasts and scientists💭 Why wonder remains one of the most powerful forces in science communicationWhether you're a lifelong Jurassic Park fan, a paleontology enthusiast, or someone who simply loves great storytelling, I hope this episode gives you a new appreciation for how imagination can shape the future of science. What first made you fall in love with dinosaurs? The Spinosaur Scandal: Why Scientists Want to Delete Suchomimus (Great balance of drama and science)

The Suchomimus Taxonomy Scandal + Mind-Blowing New Spinosaur CT Scans! Is one of the world’s most famous spinosaurs actually a lie? 🦖In today’s episode of the Prehistoric Life Podcast, we are diving straight into the massive paleontology scandal taking the internet by storm! A groundbreaking 2026 paper published in Geodiversitas by Frédéric Pittet has proposed that Suchomimus tenerensis might actually be a junior synonym of Cristatusaurus lapparenti—potentially sinking the beloved giant from Niger forever. But is the case actually closed? We break down the taxonomic drama, explore Dr. Brian Curtice’s (Fossil Crates) fascinating breakdown of the major scaling anomalies in the Suchomimus holotype models, and reveal why this "scandal" might be incredibly premature.Plus, we look at what the paper is actually about: spectacular new CT scans revealing the hyper-sensitive, crocodile-like neurovascular canals inside spinosaur snouts and their rapid, self-sustaining tooth-replacement conveyor belts! How Science Lost Its Soul | The Grand Divorce of Science, Philosophy & Faith

🦖 What if the biggest problem facing modern civilization isn't a lack of information......but a lack of wisdom? In this episode, we explore a controversial question:Did science lose something important when it separated itself from philosophy and theology? From dinosaur skeletons and fossil reconstruction to the foundations of logic, meaning, morality, and wonder, this episode examines how modern society came to mistake information for understanding—and why that distinction matters more than ever.Science has given humanity incredible power. Medicine. Computers. Space exploration. Artificial intelligence. But can science alone answer questions about meaning, purpose, beauty, morality, and truth?Or have we forgotten the disciplines that once helped us ask those questions?🎙️ In this episode:🦖 Why a dinosaur skeleton is really an argument assembled from fragments📚 When science was still called "natural philosophy"⚖️ The difference between science, scientism, and philosophy🏛️ The historical relationship between science and religion🧠 Why logic, epistemology, and argumentation matter🔬 The limits of empirical reasoning🌌 Wonder, meaning, and the human search for truth🦕 What paleontology can teach us about rebuilding intellectual coherenceThis isn't an argument against science. It's an argument for recovering the broader intellectual traditions that helped make science possible in the first place.Because facts matter. But facts alone do not interpret themselves. And perhaps civilization's greatest challenge is learning how to assemble meaning from fragments once again.💬 Question for the comments:Do you think modern society has confused information with wisdom? The “Salt King” 🦖 | New Spinosaurus Discovery Explained

🦖🌊 For over a century, Spinosaurus has been one of the most controversial dinosaurs ever discovered. Was it a shoreline hunter?A giant river predator?A semi-aquatic dinosaur?Or something even stranger? Now, a new discovery may have added one of the strongest pieces of evidence yet that Spinosaurus was adapted for life in salty coastal environments:Salt glands. The same kind of biological adaptation seen in seabirds, marine reptiles, and animals that regularly deal with high-salinity environments. And if scientists are right…this changes the Spinosaurus debate yet again.🎥 In this video, we explore:🌊 What salt glands actually do🦖 The new anatomical evidence found in spinosaur skulls🧠 Why this discovery matters for the aquatic Spinosaurus debate🐊 How Spinosaurus compares to crocodiles and marine animals🏝️ The ancient coastal ecosystems of North Africa⚔️ The ongoing identity crisis surrounding Spinosaurus🔥 The newly discussed “Hell Heron” spinosaur material📚 Papers & Sources Mentioned:• “Avian-like salt glands in Spinosauridae” — Andrea Cau et al. Tylosaurus rex: The Sea Monster That Became the Ocean’s T. rex 🦖🌊

🦖🌊 When people hear “T. rex,” they think of the king of the dinosaurs. But now, there’s another T. rex — and this one ruled the oceans. In this video, we dive into Tylosaurus rex, a newly identified species of giant mosasaur that may have been one of the deadliest marine predators of the Cretaceous seas.At over 40 feet long, armed with serrated teeth and crushing jaws, this apex predator dominated the ancient Western Interior Seaway that once split North America in half. But the wildest part?Scientists had fossils of this animal sitting in museum collections for decades before realizing it was an entirely different species.🎥 In this video, we explore:🌊 The ancient ocean that covered North America🦎 What mosasaurs actually were🦖 Why Tylosaurus rex was different from other tylosaurs⚔️ Fossil evidence of violent combat between giant marine predators🦷 How this animal hunted and what it likely ate🧠 Why this discovery changes what we know about mosasaur evolution👑 The controversy behind naming another animal “T. rex”From giant sharks to massive marine reptiles, the oceans of the Cretaceous may have been even more terrifying than the land. And hidden beneath those ancient waters…was a predator worthy of the name rex.👍 Like, subscribe, and stick around for more dinosaur projects, fossil science, and prehistoric storytelling!🦕 SUPPORT THE PREHISTORIC LIFE PATREON If you want to help fuel these projects (and get some exclusive perks), consider supporting the Prehistoric Life Patreon. The Dinosaur Tracks That Shouldn’t Exist…

What if dinosaurs never actually disappeared from a region… we just never found the evidence? In this episode, we dive into a groundbreaking paleontology discovery: 132 million-year-old dinosaur footprints found along the coast of South Africa—tracks that are rewriting what scientists thought they knew about dinosaur survival and ecosystems. For decades, the fossil record in southern Africa went silent after massive volcanic eruptions around 182 million years ago. Many believed dinosaurs vanished from the region…Until now. These newly discovered trackways reveal that dinosaurs were still present—and possibly thriving—millions of years later. But this discovery isn’t just about footprints…It’s about how paleontology itself is changing.Instead of just studying bones, scientists are now uncovering behavior, movement, and entire ecosystems from trace fossils like these.🎧 In this episode, you’ll learn:Why this discovery shocked scientistsWhat kinds of dinosaurs made these tracksHow footprints can reveal behaviorAnd why this changes the timeline of prehistoric lifeThis is the story of a discovery that shouldn’t exist… but does.🔗 Sources & further reading:ScienceDaily article on the discovery👍 Like, subscribe, and stick around for more dinosaur projects, fossil science, and prehistoric storytelling!🦕 SUPPORT THE PREHISTORIC LIFE PATREON If you want to help fuel these projects (and get some exclusive perks), consider supporting the Prehistoric Life Patreon. Scientists Discovered a Baby Dinosaur… Without Opening the Fossil

What if a brand-new dinosaur species was hiding inside a rock… and scientists didn’t even need to open it to find it?In this episode, we explore the discovery of Doolysaurus huhmini, a small plant-eating dinosaur from South Korea that was revealed using advanced CT and X-ray scanning technology. What started as a few visible bones turned into a complete scientific breakthrough when researchers uncovered an entire juvenile dinosaur skeleton hidden inside the fossil. This turkey-sized ornithopod lived during the Cretaceous Period and may have even had fuzzy, feather-like filaments. Even more incredible, this fossil includes rare skull material—making it one of the most important dinosaur discoveries from Korea in years. We’ll break down:How scientists discovered a new species without breaking the fossilWhat Doolysaurus huhmini looked like and how it livedWhy this discovery is so important for dinosaur evolutionHow new technology is changing paleontology foreverThis find proves that some of the biggest discoveries in paleontology might already be sitting in rocks—or museum collections—waiting to be revealed.🔬 Source: University of Texas at Austinhttps://news.utexas.edu/2026/03/19/fossil-x-ray-reveals-new-species-of-baby-dino-named-for-iconic-korean-cartoon/👍 Like, subscribe, and stick around for more dinosaur projects, fossil science, and prehistoric storytelling!🎟️ PREHISTORIC LIVE 2026 — GET YOUR TICKETS NOW! The Five Times Life Almost Ended | Mass Extinction Cliff Notes

Earth has experienced five major mass extinctions that dramatically reshaped life on our planet. In this Cliff Notes–style breakdown, we quickly explore the causes and impacts of each extinction event and how they changed the course of evolution. We’ll cover:• Ordovician–Silurian extinction event – A massive ice age that wiped out around 85% of marine species.• Late Devonian extinction – A prolonged crisis that devastated reef ecosystems and ocean life.• Permian–Triassic extinction event – The largest extinction in Earth’s history, sometimes called “The Great Dying,” eliminating up to 90–96% of species.• Triassic–Jurassic extinction event – A volcanic catastrophe that cleared the way for dinosaurs to dominate the planet.• Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event – The asteroid impact that ended the age of dinosaurs (except birds). This quick guide covers what caused each extinction, what died, and how life recovered—all in a fast, easy-to-understand overview. If you enjoy paleontology, prehistoric life, and Earth history, this video gives you the essential facts behind the Big Five extinctions that shaped the world we live in today. If you love prehistoric life, deep-time ecosystems, and behind-the-scenes paleo stories, you’re going to enjoy this conversation!👍 Like the video if you learned something new💬 Drop a comment with your favorite Triassic animal🔔 Subscribe for more interviews with paleontology creators and scientists🎟️ PREHISTORIC LIVE 2026 — GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!Happening May 1st and 2nd, this event is going to be unforgettable. A NEW Spinosaurus Species Just Dropped — Meet Spinosaurus mirabilis (“Hell Heron”)

Scientists have officially described a brand new species of Spinosaurus — Spinosaurus mirabilis — from the Sahara Desert in Niger. This massive predatory dinosaur lived about 95 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous and may have hunted fish in shallow rivers like a giant prehistoric heron. What makes Spinosaurus mirabilis so unique is its huge scimitar-shaped head crest, which could have been brightly colored and used for display. Fossils discovered in 2019 and 2022 revealed multiple crests and skull fragments that confirmed this was a completely new species within the famous spinosaurid family. This discovery is particularly exciting because it’s the first clear new species of Spinosaurus described in more than a century, and it may change how scientists think these dinosaurs lived and hunted. Instead of being fully aquatic predators, this species may have been a semi-aquatic wader stalking fish in inland river systems deep in the Sahara. In this video we break down the discovery, the fossils, and what Spinosaurus mirabilis tells us about the evolution of spinosaurs.📄 Original scientific paper:https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adx5486If you love prehistoric life, deep-time ecosystems, and behind-the-scenes paleo stories, you’re going to enjoy this conversation!👍 Like the video if you learned something new💬 Drop a comment with your favorite Triassic animal🔔 Subscribe for more interviews with paleontology creators and scientists🎟️ PREHISTORIC LIVE 2026 — GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!Happening May 1st and 2nd, this event is going to be unforgettable.
