Latino USA: Lost in Queer Translation: From Gay Slurs to Colombian Slang

When Andrés tried translating Colombian slang to his American boyfriend, he stumbled into a deeper question: what do these words really mean?  In this episode, Andrés traces the roots of everyday slang in Colombian Spanish used not only by the queer community, but by the public at large.  What he finds reveals more about his queerness and culture than he thought. In this story, he brings us the painful, often overlooked history behind a few words that he has been using both in his home country and here in the U.S.  Latino USA is the longest-running news and culture radio program in the U.S., centering Latino stories and hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa.  Follow the show to get every episode.  Follow us on TikTok and YouTube. Silver Linings with the Old Gays: Romance Before Apps: “Boyfriends are something you have between lovers.”

Happy Pride month from Silver Linings! For more of your favorite LGBTQ+ content, check out the Outspoken Network from iHeartPodcasts. Are we flirting now? Is this a thing? Today, we’re talking all about Romance and Relationships…from our first crushes and early days of flirting, to dating stories, and long-term love. When we were growing up, there were no apps, no swiping right, and definitely not the same d*ck picks we see today. We found our friends and lovers the old-fashioned way: a held gaze, a feeling in the air, and the kind of connection that could only happen in person. So in this episode, we’re looking back at the crushes that made our stomachs flip, the romances that changed our lives, the heartbreaks we survived, and the first times we dared to call someone “boyfriend.” From awkward flirting and unforgettable kisses, to love, loss, and lessons learned the hard way, let’s just say we’ve seen some things. And whether it lasts five minutes or twenty-five years, romance always has something to teach us.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There Are No Girls on the Internet: University of Oklahoma Trans Instructor's Attorney Still in the Fight After Appeal Denied

When graduate instructor Mel Curth gave a student a failing grade for work that didn't answer the assignment, she couldn't have predicted what would happen next. Within days, the student, backed by Turning Point USA and right-wing media, had launched a national campaign. The university removed Mel from teaching. The grade was thrown out. And the student became a conservative media celebrity. Mel’s attorney Brittany Stewart, has defended LGBTQ rights in Oklahoma for decades, breaks down what really happened at the University of Oklahoma, and what it reveals about the coordinated effort to push trans people out of academia and public life.  Listen to our full episode breaking down the situation (and yes, we read Samantha’s full essay!): https://omny.fm/shows/there-are-no-girls-on-the-internet/this-univ-of-oklahoma-essay-is-so-bad-it-launched-a-culture-war-career   Listen to Brittany’s great podcast The Thunder Gals (OKC’s ONLY female-led Thunder media!!) https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-thunder-gals/id1555886306   Follow Bridget and TANGOTI on social media!  ||  instagram.com/bridgetmarieindc/ || tiktok.com/@bridgetmarieindc ||  youtube.com/@ThereAreNoGirlsOnTheInternet || bsky.app/profile/tangoti.bsky.social   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Afterlives: Episode 3: Who Threw the First Brick at Stonewall?

There’s no moment in queer history more celebrated than the Stonewall riots, which set off the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. There’s also no event that’s more hotly debated. To separate the truth from the myth, we first step onto the streets of Greenwich Village, a mecca of queer culture in the 60s. By all accounts The Stonewall Inn at the heart of the Village was a dump, but it was also the only place queer people could dance, making it an instant favorite among neighborhood hangouts. But how did one Saturday night at the bar change the course of history? And what was Marsha’s role in how it all jumped off? But wait, before you fast forward to Pride today and fade to the credits, we take a closer look at the organizing that followed the riots and the ways it excluded the very people who were on the front lines, people like Marsha.
