Primus Tracks

Primus Tracks chronicles the recordings of the rock band Primus, one track at a time. Join Josh, Frankie, & Primus friend/assistant Tim Soya as they create the ultimate Primus companion - for beginners and hardcore fans alike.

CLD - Captain Lariat w/ Jeff Roscher

Captain Lariat is a mysterious figure; a legendary carouser, or so he'd have you believe. Josh's pal Jeff Roscher, a recent CLD convert, drops by to discuss the finer points of the characterization of the "Captain," what the world sounds like when you're on nitrous, and learns some new words. Find Jeff at https://bluebirdsmusic.org/ and make a new friend. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

CLD - Breath of a Salesman w/ Bret Crow

The great Bret Crow of TikTok fame joins the pod to discuss CLD's Breath of a Salesman. You've likely seen Bret's creations even if, like me, you've never used TikTok, likely because a friend or internet stranger has posted his videos all over creation. Bret digs into the songwriting details of Breath, and we find numerous connections to the tune via the Arthur Miller pun, annoying salespeople, hangers-on who try to get in with celebrities, and even Tales From The Crypt. Find Bret @thebretcrowshow on the socials.Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

CLD - Boomerang Baby w/ Anthony Garcia

Frequent guest Anthony Garcia joins the pod to discuss Boomerang Baby, a Lennon brainchild that is disarmingly charming in its time signature and slow build to a flourish that calls home those lost in the sea of smartphone culture, using an ironic term in the process. Anthony's keen ear catches some details we may have otherwise missed, and Frankie educates us on other invectives used against young people. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

CLD - Mr. Wright w/ Kello Gonzalez

We resume our Monolith of Phobos coverage with Mr. Wright, which contains a very Beatle-esque bass lick that drives a lyrical story about a distasteful voyeur. Kello Gonzlez zjoins us to model the bass part and to explain Les Claypool's singular talent in terms of writing strong licks that can carry a four-minute track, and remarks about the Lennon-Claypool connection. Find Kello @kellogc just about anywhere, including instagram and youtube. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

Intra-Album Interview: CLD artist & video director Rich Ragsdale

We pause our nascent Monolith of Phobos episodes yet again due to irrational excitement for the forthcoming CLD record, and this time the great Rich Ragsdale joins the podcast to talk about how the visual components of the album came to be. Rich directed the CLD video Blood & Rockets, and returned to the fold to create the comic book that accompanies The Great Parrot-Ox album; he also directed the Golden Egg of Empathy video, which provides a glimpse of the overarching narrative. Rich discusses the creative and collaborative processes for the comic book, including some abandoned concepts, and how his numerous influences led to what we will soon hold in our hands. Find Rich on Instagram @richragsdale and at richragsdale.comGet involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

New Album Alert! CLD Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy Preview

The Claypool Lennon Delirium's The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy is a really long album title, but it serves the purpose of what we can only imagine is a modern-day fable told in a retro style that may or may not end up with all of humanity being turned into paper clips. We have tracked down all the available information about the forthcoming CLD record and packaged it here, so you won't miss a thing. Plus, rampant speculation on what we don't know, because it's fun. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

CLD - Cricket and the Genie, Movements I & II w/ Jerry Roscher

It's a double dose of delirium! We've packaged both the Cricket and the Genie tracks together, as they were released as one to promote the release of Monolith of Phobos, and these two tracks have always been performed together at every single CLD show thus far. Josh's longtime pal Jerry Roscher drops by the pod to discuss why these tracks and this album as a whole speak to him so deeply; for him, it's the sense of melody and songwriting that Sean Lennon brings and how it incorporates with all things Claypool. Great talk about the musical influences and the lyrical narrative!Find Jerry's band, Bluebirds:https://bluebirdsmusic.org/BandcampYoutubeGet involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

CLD - Monolith of Phobos (Album Track 1)

What do you get when you put on the early Pink Floyd, pair it with Carl Sagan's Cosmos, and throw Buzz Aldrin in for fun, then drink loads of red wine with Sean Lennon and Les Claypool? You get the title track to The Monolith of Phobos, a journey of whimsy and wonder. Claypool Lennon Delirium: Monolith of Phobos Overview

In 2016, Les Claypool had some time away from Primus and invited Sean Lennon to Rancho Relaxo; Sean had guested on some Primus encores during their 2015 summer tour and jammed backstage with Les, where a connection was born. They fished, drank pinot, discussed nuggets from newspapers and periodicals, in the process birthing The Claypool Lennon Delirium. We get into the details of how these two got together and give an album overview of Monolith of Phobos, a proggy/psychedelic album name if there ever was one. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

Inter-album Interview: Tim Slowinski, Oysterhead artist

Tim Slowinkski, the man behind the excellent Oysterhead album cover art, tour poster and iconography, joins Primus Tracks to talk about his dinstinctive art style and subject matter, as well as the entire Oysterhead experience, which brought him some notoriety and remains a project that earns recognition. Duo de Twang tours with Soya & Wylie Woods

The Duo de Twang album is a fun listen, but the shows were where the guys really let loose and silliness reigned. Soya and frequent Twang contributor Wylie Woods drop by to talk about their experience on the road with DDT, including a show that Josh attended which they described as one of the worst of the tour, lousy conditions at Jam Cuirse, and an unexpected success in Europe. Duo de Twang - Origins & Four Foot Shack album

We turn our attention to Duo de Twang, the "vacation fuck-off band" that Les Claypool started after a couple special California gigs gave away to a full-blown vision for a sit-down campfire acoustic project. We chart the project's logisitical and inspirational origins, and discuss the album track-by-track. Inter-album Interview: Robi Bean

This week on the podcast we welcome Robi Bean, who drummed with Primus for about half of 1986. Although he doesn't appear on any demo tapes, and live footage of his playing with Primus is scarce, Robi played an important part in the formation of many early Primus songs that would become fan favorites, including Tommy The Cat. Robi details how he first worked with Les Claypool in a band called Manx, and how a visit to psychic presaged his later involvement in Primus, and recalls some choice moments with Les and Todd. If you're in the Bay Area, you can catch Robi drumming for numerous blues bands around town, including regular gigs at The Saloon on Grant Avenue: https://thesaloonsf.com/the-bandsGet involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

For our next entry in the Primus DNA sub-series, we swing for the fences by daring to take on the mighty Rush as a major component of the Primus makeup. Gerry Schramm of the Something For Nothing podcast joins us to make sense of it all, including where to hear elements of each band's hallmarks in the music of the other, the enduring friendship between the two bands, and their commonalities, including killing the party by putting on their albums. Rush fans: Where should Primus fans unfamiliar with the band start?Primus fans: Where should Rush fans unfamiliar with the band start?Hit us up to help with this unscientific study. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

    OFAF - Ol' Rosco

We end our Of Fungi And Foe review with Ol' Rosco, who may be one of the more abhorrent characters in the Claypool lyrical universe, perhaps for being all too real. This is the final "fungi" track in the sense that it was initially written for the Mushroom Men video game; Les later added vocal and percussion tracks for the OFAF record. Frankie provides a loving sendoff to this record, which he holds in high regard. Get your skin care routine ready. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

OFAF - Pretty Little Song & Of Fungi and Foe

This week, we cover tracks 10 and 11 from Of Fungi and Foe: Pretty Little Song with guest Bryonn Bain, as well as the title track. These tracks are buried on the back end of the record and have never been performed live, so they're obscure nuggets in the catalog. Wail and gnash your teeth along with us as we explore the agony of Pretty Little Song and what the title tracks tells us about the whole album experience. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

  18. 272

    OFAF - Primed by 29

Primed By 29 has a fetching title for a Primus fan exploring the solo works of Les Claypool. Although the lyrics don't necessarily refer to anything Primus-related, they're certainly in the wheelhouse of Claypool, who pens another cautionary tale about going too far with recreational drugs in an attempt to create excitement from the mundane. It also happens to be Frankie's favorite track on the album, and we wonder why it didn't make the cut for Duo de Twang a few years later. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

  19. 271

    OFAF - Kazoo

This lounge jazz number is an ode to the dog, in particular, Les Claypool's hound, Kazoo. It's another musical departure for the man, and it sounds like Skerik wasn't available, so Sam Bass filled in on cello. It's not the deepest track, but we don't have to get deep with our dogs, right? They love us, we love them, now let's go for a walk, a run, or a ball toss. For another great story about a dog, read The Mixer by PG Wodehouse.Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

  20. 270

OFAF - Bite Out Of Life

Do you know a boy who's taken a bite out of life? I suppose that description qualifies guest performer Eugene Hutz, a man of fire and energy whose work with Gogol Bordello has delighted audiences the world over. Eugene brings a jolt to the side two opener of Of Fungi And Foe in the form of guitar strumming (the only guitar on the record!) and unintelligible wailing mixed with what might be Ukranian phrases. Put some pep in your step with this track, and do something fun/wacky/thrilling. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

  21. 269

OFAF - You Can't Tell Errol Anything

This week, we tackle a track that could easily appear on a Tom Waits record, most notably Real Gone, which Les Claypool actually guested on. There's something about the percussive backbeat and dirty upright that screams Waits, but Les puts his own spin on it with tripped-out high register upright and clean vocals. Josh and Frankie agree that this is one of the more memorable tracks from the record so far, and the lyrical story, while a variation on the standard Claypool lyrical themes, are engaging and delightful because of how the story is told. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

  22. 268

OFAF - What Would Sir George Martin Do?

On this OFAF track, Les Claypool ponders what one of his heroes might do in numerous situations around a trip to London in which the airline loses Les's luggage, he's without UK currency, but he gets to screen a film with George Martin in the room and parties with George's son Giles until Les's pal Jason pukes on someone. It's certainly not your standard Claypool lyrical fare! Tune in to learn a bit about George Martin and why LC might hold him in such high regard, as does most everyone else in the music industry. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

  23. 267

    OFAF - Boonville Stomp

The fourth track of the Of Fungi and Foe record, Boonville Stomp was composed specifically for the film Pig Hunt, which takes place in and around Boonville in the woods of northern California. Les Claypool has a small role in the film, as well, if you're at all curious. This tune has cinematic elements to it, which stands to reason. Does it all come together as a standalone song for an album? That's the question we grapple with in this episode. Plus, we spit some boontling at you brightlighters. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

  24. 266

    OFAF - Red State Girl

Remember 2008? What do you mean, you'd rather not? Yeah, me either, but Les Claypool won't let us forget the person who helped define the year and the followers who molded themselves in her image, or something like that. Red State Girl is a curious track with a music video and a live performance on national TV to boot, so it qualifies for the lead track from Of Fungi and Foe, as well as the first track on the album not to be music created for another medium. It's an actual straightahead piece of music for music's sake. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

  25. 265

    OFAF - Amanitas

Fungi or Foe? Both! Amanitas is another cautionary tale that has a few unexpected twists and turns. It's another tune originally intended for the Mushroom Men soundtrack repurposed for release on OFAF. Mushrooms sure are wacky! Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

  26. 264

    OFAF - Mushroom Men

Of Fungi and Foe's opening track is solidly on the Fungi side, as the music for this track is exactly as Les Claypool conceived and recorded it for the Mushroom Men video game, with vocals added to the album version. We sample the video game music, instrumentation, and get behind the story of the lyrics, and evaluate the tune as a harbinger for the record, and try to categorize it for the Claypool catalog, because that's, I guess, what our brains want to do. Mushroom Men soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BovgCknGwo4&list=PLE8D3E68CBA71B182&index=1Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

Of Fungi And Foe - album overview

As we chug along in the Claypool chronology, it's time to address 2009's Of Fungi and Foe, the second album to be credited simply to Les Claypool. Frankie has it on regular rotation; Josh listened to it once upon release, wasn't interested, and shelved it. WILL THIS SOW DIVISION IN PRIMUS TRACKS TOWERS? No, but it will provide a study in contrasts as the album unfolds. In this week's overview we provide the contemporary context for the release with notes about the album, tour, and promotional aspects. Most of the music for this record had already been composed for two disparate projects: a video game about mushrooms (fungi) and a movie about a killer wild boar (foe), so we'll examine how that affects our reception. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

    LSD - Frog Brigade Tipitina's 2003 w/ Toaster

At long last, we welcome the legendary Toaster to Primus Tracks. Toaster is a prolific Primus/Les taper who started toasterland.com over 20 years ago as a respository for show recordings and a way to catalog performances for the masses. It's proved to be a priceless resource to hardcore fans, and we reference it regularly on the podcast. Toaster joins to share his experience at Tipitina's in New Orleans 2003, where the Frog Brigade played for 3.5 hours, ending at 4:30am. This is a favorite of Frankie's, and these two geek out on the Frog Brigade era as we samples numerous portions of this legendary show that features numerous guests, song teases and partials, and bastardized versions of some classics. Drop out of life for a while and have some fun at toasterland.comGet involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

    Onward & Upward Tour Wrap

Primus have completed their first headlining tour with drummer John Hoffman, who has been plenty busy since his hire in January 2025. This latest tour spanned 25 dates in 24 cities over 35 days, in which the band played 47 different songs! We dig into those numbers, the stage production, and the general excitement from the fanbase as Les, Ler, and Hoffer made a mad dash across the United States to establish live rapport, continue to establish their foundation, and just perhaps, toss about some ideas that may become songs for a new record. WERE YOU THERE? OWAW - Filipino Ray w/ Sam Stewart

Sam Stewart of Flagman returns to discuss Filipino Ray, an acrobatic bass jaunt that comprises the penultimate track of Of Whales and Woe. The bass lines go hard, but there is a lot of open space as well, which can be tricky for many musicians. Sam helps us with those intricacies, and regales with his own tales of whales and woe around procuting and hearing this record for the first time. We also share what we know about Ray Wing, the lyrical subject of the song, who Les played with in the Tommy Crank Band in the 1980s. Plus, can we borrow your old iPod cable? OWAW - Rumble of the Diesel

The hips of the record have arrived! This utterly accessible, catchy track doubles as a slice-of-life study of a commercial fisherman, whose solace is the sea, despite its diminishing economic returns. We weigh how officially unofficial this track stands as a Fisherman's Chronicle, and and explain why it's the most-performed track from the record, although that's fairly clear to aficionados. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

    OWAW - Nothin' Ventured

The great Kello Gonzalez returns to the podcast on short notice to discuss Nothin' Ventured, which we interpret as our version of a Les Claypool motivational speech, particularly because the spirit of the song (bass solos) and lyrics (taking risks to achieve something) mirrors what LEs did with his career path. IT's also chock-full of cultural idioms amd a sneaky masturbation joke; everyone's favorite Claypoolism. Kello demonstrates the "five minute" interpretation of the bass line, and we dig into taking risks, the rewards, and why it matters. Find Kello on Youtube and Instagram. Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

    OWAW - Iowan Gal

Les Claypool's ode to his wife, Chaney, starts side two of Of Whales and Woe, and there's certainly no woe to be found in this joyous track, which reflects the irrational emotional highs of fulfilled love, through the Claypool lens. Josh, a native Iowan, sheds some light on the lyrical references and discusses agricultural exports, because that's all Iowans talk about aside from the weather. We also play an excerpt from Les's book tour in Iowa City. OWAW - Phantom Patriot w/ Matt Hunter

Today's track tells the tale of Richard McCaslin, a self-proclaimed superhero, who, disguised as the Panthom Patriot, invaded the Bohemian Grove in search of child sacrifices and other horrific crimes...in the off-season when the economic and political elite were not present. We provide the background on the story, as does Les Claypool in our associated live cuts. We also have with us regular contributor Matt Hunter, who models the bass riff, discusses the dynamics of the song, and helps us find where the pinky finger fits into the whole thing, as Les infamously broke his pinky finger during filming of a movie, and was unable to play this tune on tour for weeks as a reult. OWAW - Vernon The Company Man w/ Gene Meyer

The great Gene Meyer (@genemeyelol on the socials) of Bandit fame returns to the pod to discuss Vernon the Company Man. We get literary with some associations to Kerouac, Ginsberg, Arthur Miller, but we even it out with jokes about PRimus shirts being more effective than chastity belts. We tackle the title track this week with the help of old friend Lalo Fierro, who, even as a seasoned gigging bassist, maintains an uneven relationship with Claypool's bass playing, mostly due to its unpredictable nature, which is emblematic of today's track. We also consider the eternal question: Do you humor the crusty old guy's stories, or do you not engage? OWAW - Lust Stings

After the bicep of One Better, we head straight to the crotch for Lust Stings. Les seems to want to highlight the body parts that the people want to see. Lust Stings gleefully swamps the listener with percussion and instrumentation that makes you want to take a hot shower, and adds to it off-putting yet matter-of-fact lyrics about the spread of STI. While all of that doesn't sound too appealing, it all comes together to create a unique experience in the catalog. Inter-Album Interview: Steve "Extrakd" Freeman

We are thrilled to speak with Soya and Steve Freeman, aka Extrakd, who has created loads of diverse music over the years with the likes of Brain, Disk, Mirv, Ler, and Buckethead. We tread some of the history and releases from the 90s and 00s, but hone in on Mars Mechanics, which has a new album titled In Through The Drive Through. The record is primarily arranged and performed by Steve, Brain, and Mirv with guest turns from Skerik and Ler. Each Mars Mechanics release has its own musical theme; the latest has a 1970s Miles Davis foundation, and the outcome is a high-energy dose of unmistakable majesty. Plus, Steve tells us about some projects that have yet to be made public, and may hold the key to understanding the tornado of urine (details in episode). Tracks sampled in episode, in chronological order:Its Brain (Mars Mechanics)Technology Doctor (MIRV)Darkside Whiplash (El Stew)Surf Mission (El Stew)B-boy Showcase (El Stew)The John Rocker Redemption Clause (No Forcefield)Claudius The God (No Forcefield)9a (Mars Mechanics)Gonzography (Mars Mechanics)Don't Bite Contradiction Bomb (Gonervill)Find Mars Mechanics on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mars_mechanics/Mars Mechanics MusicYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXl_huq832S_MOC4OoCzgPwSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3sZiGJ55DnYXBpoBwYTqKEApple: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/mars-mechanics/1468632210Mars Mechanics Merch: https://mdpe.shop/collections/marsmechanicsEl Stew - No Hesitation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y415bfxzoNcNo Forcefield - Lee's Oriental Massage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZqCqfViCugNo Forcefield - God is an Excuse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7-bbaQUS04Marsupial's Belly Flop Breaks - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4NQyZoYmj0PhonosycographDISK Live at Slim's - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAKc2PAOkxk&t=7sLom.Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

5 Gallons of Diesel & Fancy DVDs

Les Claypool was quite productive in the mid 00s, including these two discs  - one a smattering of videos and live cuts from his numerous non-Primus projects; the other a live experience sourced from fan videos of the 2006 Fancy Band tour. Each DVD came about before the proliferation of Youtube and smartphones with decent audio and video capture properties, so they were welcome additions to the catalog. 5 Gallons of Diesel (2005) and Fancy (2007) work to define specific eras of Claypool's career, and we haven't seen anything like them since. Copies are out there on second-hand sites, and of course, they're on Youtube.5 Gallons of Diesel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04hVR2OFOxQFancy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vyt-yoICsWU&Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

    Electric Apricot

In 2005, Les Claypool spawned an idea that would form Electric Apricot, a fictitious jam band of goofballs and misfits chasing their dream gig at Festeroo. The "band" formed and recorded some tracks at Rancho Relaxo in early 2005 before hitting the road that spring for some gigs that allowed them to gather live footage in between principle shooting slots. The film had a limited theatrical release, but gathered enough steam for physical releases of the film (2007) and soundtrack (2008). We chart this curiousity and dig into the hidden jokes and references throughout the film, and its significance to the jam scene for people in the know - thank you to our Primatrons! Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
