Questions For and Against Design

Design in the United States has a problem with diversity. This is not a new revelation—design as a field is predominately white and male. The roots of our diversity issue are squarely in how we define and teach Graphic Design. Design was built by and meant to serve white, cis-gendered, men in consumer-driven societies. With this foundation, how we have determined what is well designed and what is not has become extremely exclusionary. Despite increased conversation around equity, design education has yet to dramatically change. We as designers can no longer afford to be ignorant of design history. The notions of ‘empathetic design’ and ‘design thinking’ often taught in design school are wrought with a ‘designer as savior’ complex.
