Gunsmoke: Two Mothers - A Good Woman With a Gun and a Promise

Jake Meisner is to hang for shooting an unarmed man in a drunken brawl. His mother Hattie knows he’s guilty — knows the law is the law — and she walks into Marshal Dillon’s office and tells him plainly: if Jake hangs on Thursday, she will kill him. She is a woman of her word. Dillon believes her. So do Doc and Kitty, who spend the rest of the episode trying to find a way through to her before Thursday arrives. On one side of Dodge, Lorenda Henshaw is burying the son Jake killed. On the other, Hattie Meisner is loading a gun. Both women are beyond easy comfort, and the resolution — when it comes — arrives not through force or clever strategy but through two mothers finding each other across an impossible divide.Episode Highlights & Quotes“I’ve done my thinking. I know it won’t help Jake. It won’t even help me — but I’ve got to do something.” — Hattie Meisner“The only way to feel close to my dead son is to feel love — love for him and love for the world. Dragnet: The Big Fake - a Race Against Time

Detectives Joe Friday and Ben Romero of the LAPD’s Personnel Division caught an assignment unlike most — a complaint filed against one of their own. Rookie officer Russell Clark, just two and a half months on the job and with a pregnant wife at home, stood accused of robbery and assault by a man he thought he had helped.Clark’s story was straightforward: he found a drunk — Gerald Stacey — sprawled at the foot of a stairway with a broken arm. A doctor on scene confirmed Stacey had fallen. Clark drove him to emergency, bought him a sandwich, and delivered him home. The next morning, Stacey walked into a police station and accused Clark of dragging him behind the auditorium, beating him, and stealing $128. Clark was booked, stripped of his badge and gun, and locked in a county jail cell. The newspapers ran with it.Episode Quotes“You really think I rolled that character? Come on, tell me the truth.” - Officer Russell Clark“We might believe you, Clark, and that doesn’t make any difference if this man files a charge against you. It’s gotta be settled in court.” - Sergeant Friday Special Thanks to Our Sponsor Tablet Pharmacy for supporting ThePulseCommunity.ca. You’ll find all episodes of The PULSE Community Podcast on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, iHeart, TikTok and YouTube Podcasts, as well as ThePulseCommunity.ca. Check out Skookum Kid’s Stories on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, iHeart, and YouTube Podcasts. Sign up for our weekly newsletter of new podcast releases and contests!#ThePulseCommunity #ThePulsePodcast #Dragnet #RadioArchaeology #ClassicRadio #ParksvilleQualicumBeach #VancouverIsland

Dragnet — The Big Smart Guy

It’s a damp March night in Los Angeles, and Sergeant Joe Friday and his partner Ben Romero are barely out of the car when the call comes in: a woman shot to death in a fourth-floor hotel room, apparent motive robbery. Her husband, Theodore Benham, is shaken, claiming a masked intruder stepped out of the closet, demanded money, and fired. He shot back — and missed. But nothing quite adds up. A young drifter named Tommy Kane — also known as Jack Morrison, also known as Jack Mars — is found in the adjacent hotel with a bullet wound in his arm and a story full of holes. Threads from his clothing match the murder room. A witness saw him coming down the back stairs. And Benham? He keeps asking to stop for a drink on the way to identify the suspect — and inexplicably winks at Kane during the lineup.Episode Quotes:“Ben’s a real smart guy. He’s got a gang. He double-crossed me. He tried to kill me. I’m going to jail — he’s going with me.” — Tommy Kane“You’ve been telling us the same story for two days, but it doesn’t hold water.” — Sgt. Gunsmoke: Summer Night – A Baby Left Behind

It’s a sweltering summer night in Dodge City, and the biggest wagon train anyone has seen is finally rolling west. Matt Dillon, Kitty Russell, and Doc Adams watch it go — weary, relieved, and a little restless. But the night isn’t over. Tucked behind the Long Branch, Kitty and a tipsy Doc make a startling discovery: a newborn baby girl, wrapped in a blanket and left behind. The mother is somewhere in that wagon train, and she’s already a full night’s ride from Dodge.Meanwhile, a young soldier named Clint Bailey rides into Dodge looking for his wife, Jenny, who was supposed to meet him at Cimarron Crossing. When Jenny Bailey appears at Dillon’s office to claim the baby, the truth she confesses to her husband — that the child isn’t hers by birth — says everything about what two years of loneliness and longing can do to a person. Doc Adams knew all along. And the real mother? She never came back.Episode Highlights & Quotes“They’re so fresh and eager when they hit Dodge, they think they’ve already been through it. But they don’t know what’s waiting for ’em out there on the high plain.” — Kitty Russell, watching the hopeful settlers head west“You know, it’s a thing like that tonight that gives you all the hope you need to keep going.” — Doc Adams, reflecting on what he witnessedVoice message: Voice message The PULSE and be part of the podcast!Special Thanks to Our Sponsor Fireside BooksYou’ll find all episodes of The PULSE Community Podcast on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, iHeart, TikTok and YouTube podcasts, as well as ThePulseCommunity.ca.Check out Skookum Kids Stories on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, iHeart, and YouTube Podcasts, as well as SkookumKids.com.Sign up for our weekly newsletter of new podcast releases and contests!“Like, Share & Listen!”#ThePulseCommunity #PulsePodcast #ParksvilleQualicumBeach #SkookumKidsStories #RadioArchaeology #Gunsmoke #MattDillon

    Dragnet - The Big Job

It starts as a routine pickup. A teletype comes in: Alfred Garvey — wanted for forgery and robbery, known to pose as a fingerprint expert — is registered at the Fair Deal Hotel in Los Angeles. Sergeant Joe Friday and his partner Ben Romero head over to bring him in. It shouldn't take long.On the way, they give a lift to off-duty Sergeant Max Maxwell — badge number 10377, heading home to start a three-week vacation with his wife Eleanor and their two young children. It's a small, warm moment. The kind that makes what follows devastating. While Friday and Romero check Garvey's empty room upstairs, Garvey slips out via the elevator — and shoots Maxwell in the lobby. Their only hope: reluctant witness Lorraine Thomas, who knows more than she's telling.Episode Quotes:"Maxwell's wife and kids. How does Al square with them?" — Sgt. Friday, cutting through excuses to convince reluctant witness Lorraine Thomas to cooperate"I don't want to talk loud. The cops might have bumped this room." — Jack Fleming, unknowingly confirming his suspicions — and talking anyway — as detectives listen in from the next roomSpecial Thanks to Our Sponsor Tablet Pharmacy. You'll find all episodes of The PULSE Podcast on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, iHeart, TikTok and YouTube podcasts, as well as ThePulseCommunity.ca.Check out Skookum Kid's Stories on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, iHeart, and YouTube Podcasts.Sign up for our weekly newsletter of new podcast releases and contests! Gunsmoke: "Billy the Kid" – The Killer Was 12 Years Old

When a notorious wanted criminal named Clay Richards turns up dead — draped across his saddle and delivered to Dodge City by a German farmer named Pete Ziglar — Marshal Matt Dillon finds himself standing at the centre of a storm he never saw coming. Ziglar had every reason to want Clay dead: a $400 bounty on the man's head, and a bank mortgage about to swallow his farm whole. The town doesn't need much convincing. But this episode of Gunsmoke refuses to end where you expect it to. Doc's autopsy delivers a chilling revelation: Clay Richards wasn't shot. He was stabbed through the spine with a small blade — the kind you'd find on a Barlow knife. The real killer is Bob, a 12-year-old runaway from Cottonwood who idolised the romance of gunfighters and dreamed of filling his gun handle with notches. His mother arrives at the final, devastating moment — only to reveal she'd given him a Barlow knife when he begged her for a real gun. Bob vanishes before Dillon can catch him, leaving the marshal standing in the dust with a truth too dark to shake.Episode Highlights & Quotes"You don't keep scores, son. It's something you try to forget." – Marshal Matt Dillon, "He wanted a real one. That boy's just gun crazy. I swear. I got him a nice Barlow knife instead." – Miss Bonnie, unknowingly revealing her son is the true killerVoice message The PULSE and be part of the podcast!Click here to learn how to Support the showSpecial Thanks to Our Sponsor: Thrifty Foods Parksville for supporting ThePulseCommunity.ca.Sign up for our weekly newsletter of new podcast releases and contests!Looking for more Vancouver Island Content? Dragnet — The Big Trial

It's just after midnight on a hot Los Angeles night when a woman is struck down — left for dead by a driver who never slowed down. Sergeant Joe Friday and Ben Romero catch the case with almost nothing to work with: a near-sighted witness, a partial plate number, and a car described only as a late-model Dodge or Plymouth in light blue or blue-green.The break comes when a 1948 Plymouth turns up with a bent grille, soft hood creases — and an owner who refuses to drive it. Justice is served: Ralph Angelo is convicted of hit-and-run felony, and Sheila Gordon is convicted alongside him for compounding a felony. Both go to prison."With a half dead girl and no suspect? It's a sour one." — Sergeant Joe Friday"We found a car. Only one job left... to find the driver." — Lt. "The Juniper Tree" is old-time radio storytelling at its finest, rich with moral complexity, sharp dialogue, and characters who stay with you long after the credits roll.Episode Highlights & Quotes"When it's something you can fight with your fists and your guns, it's easy.
