Sandy Dann IV with Taryn the Shell Lady 130326

Broome’s very own Taryn “The Shell Lady” Ryan joins Sandy Dann in the studio to talk about something we’re all seeing more of along our coastline — rubbish and microplastics washing up on our beaches. While Taryn is usually known for sharing her love of shells and marine life, this conversation focuses on the environmental challenges facing our local beaches and oceans. In this interview, Taryn explains how microplastics — tiny fragments of plastic smaller than a centimetre — are increasingly being found along the high tide line on Broome beaches, particularly after storms and rough weather. Unlike organic materials that break down naturally, plastic breaks apart but never fully disappears, remaining in the ecosystem and even entering the food chain. Taryn also highlights the impact plastic has on marine life including turtles, dugongs and molluscs, which can mistake plastic for food or encounter it in their environment. The conversation also explores: • Why rubbish washes up even in remote areas • Fishing waste like bait bags and plastic bottles found on beaches • The importance of picking up rubbish whenever we see it • Community clean-ups organised by Tangaroa Blue • How everyday people can contribute to science through the iNaturalist app Taryn encourages everyone to take pride in caring for Country and our coastline: “Take the rubbish away, and leave the shells.” A simple message that helps protect the small creatures that rely on shells for survival and keeps our beaches healthy for future generations.

Matty J from Radio Goolarri chats with Sean Cooper, Broome ambassador for Spoke To A Bloke, about the upcoming Walk for a Bloke and the important work being done to support men’s mental health in Broome, the Kimberley and beyond. Spoke To A Bloke began after the tragic loss of a loved one named Nick, a larger-than-life character who used to organise a 25km walk each year with his mates as a way of bringing blokes together. Radio Goolarri’s Sandy Dann speaks with Cherie Sibosado, CEO of Aarnja Ltd, about several important initiatives happening across the Kimberley — including the upcoming Kimberley Aboriginal Clean Energy Forum and community consultations for the new Broome Women’s Refuge. The inaugural Kimberley Aboriginal Clean Energy Forum will bring together representatives from remote communities, government, industry and energy providers to talk about the future of clean energy, solar infrastructure and energy security for Kimberley communities. The forum is an opportunity for Aboriginal communities to be part of the decision-making process as Australia transitions to renewable energy. The conversation also highlights the community consultation process for the new Broome Women’s Refuge, which is inviting locals to share their ideas about the design, cultural safety and support services needed to better support women and children experiencing family and domestic violence. Radio Goolarri – In Studio 📅 Aired: 6 February 2026 Sandy Dann welcomes back Taryn Ryan – The Shell Lady to the Radio Goolarri studio for the first shell yarn of 2026, fresh from her summer school adventures in Albany and straight back onto Broome’s beaches after the rain. This episode takes a deeper look at some of the ocean’s most fascinating and formidable mollusks. From intelligent octopus and ancient nautilus to the surprisingly powerful cone shell, Taryn unpacks how these soft-bodied creatures survive, adapt and protect themselves in a constantly changing marine world. In this episode, you’ll hear about: Why octopus are highly intelligent yet live such short lives What makes cephalopods different from other shell-forming mollusks How blue-ringed octopus and cone shells use venom for protection Why cone shells can be dangerous even when partially buried in sand How shells get their colour and intricate patterns from diet and metabolism The role shells play in stabilising beaches, supporting biodiversity and protecting coastlines Why leaving shells in place benefits marine life, plants and future beachgoers With a strong focus on beach safety, biodiversity and curiosity, this conversation blends science with practical awareness. From jellyfish season to unexpected live shell sightings, it’s a reminder that our coastline is alive with complex, interconnected life. 🌊 Next time you’re walking Cable Beach or exploring the reef, slow down, look carefully, and remember — every shell has a job to do, even the ones you can’t see moving.

Sandy Dann IV with Taryn The Shell Lady 090126

On this episode of Shell Talk, Sandy Dann catches up with Taryn “The Shell Lady” Ryan while she’s in Albany — not on holiday, but at summer school sharpening her shell photography skills and preparing for a series of talks on historic shell collections. Taryn shares a fascinating discovery from the southern coastline: the delicate violet sea snail that floats on a handmade bubble raft and feeds on blue bottle jellyfish. She explains how these tiny ocean drifters live, why they wash ashore together, and what makes cold-water species so different from Broome’s tropical shells. The conversation dives into biodiversity, nutrient cycling, and the powerful reminder that shells are more than beach treasures. They are homes, habitats, stabilisers of sand, and quiet contributors to the life of our coastlines. From Albany’s white sandy beaches to Broome’s warm waters, this yarn is a beautiful reminder to look, learn, and leave shells where they belong.

Sandy Dann IV Ochre Ribbon Week 2026 – Johari Demin (AFLS Broome) 120226

🎙️ Ochre Ribbon Week | Don’t Silence the Violence At the start of Ochre Ribbon Week, Sandy Dann sits down with Johari Demin, Engagement Officer at the Aboriginal Family Legal Service in Broome, for a powerful and heartfelt conversation about family and domestic violence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Before the discussion begins, Johari calls for a minute’s silence to honour the lives lost to family violence. It sets the tone for an honest yarn about a crisis that continues to impact families across the country. Ochre Ribbon Week, established in 2015 by the Aboriginal Family Legal Service, carries a clear and urgent message: Don’t Silence the Violence. Now in its 11th year, the campaign raises awareness and calls for Aboriginal-led solutions to address the disproportionate rates of family and domestic violence affecting communities. Johari shares why he returned to community-controlled work, the importance of education in breaking the cycle, and why protecting women and children must be everyone’s responsibility. He speaks candidly about the statistics, the impact on children, and the need to replace silence with strength and action. The conversation also highlights the growing reach of the Aboriginal Family Legal Service across Western Australia, offering family law support, child protection assistance, restraining orders, and community education programs. If you or someone you know needs support in Broome, contact the Aboriginal Family Legal Service on (08) 9193 5455 or visit their local office on Cable Beach Road. This is an important listen. Sandy Dann IV with Yawuru Rangers Country Update 050226

On this episode of Country Affairs, Sandy Dann is joined in the studio by Yawuru Rangers Chase Pigram and Lyle Pedro, along with Brendan Ockerby, for a relaxed and informative yarn about caring for Country during a big wet season in the Kimberley. The Rangers share what they’ve been working on out on Roebuck Plains, including water monitoring, purging bores, and testing salinity to make sure water use doesn’t impact wetlands or culturally important places on Yawuru Country. They explain why this careful monitoring matters, especially when it comes to protecting plants, animals, and waterways for future generations. The conversation also turns to cane toads, with the Rangers talking about recent night surveys, how close the toad front line is getting to Broome, and the work being done to prepare before they arrive. From camera traps tracking goanna populations to community discussions around future management strategies, the focus stays firmly on listening, planning, and working together. It’s a down-to-earth snapshot of ranger work in the wet season, the challenges of heat and access, and the everyday dedication involved in looking after Country. Sandy Dann with Martin Pritchard (Environs Kimberley) on Entrance Point050226

On this episode of Country Affairs, Sandy Dann shares a thoughtful yarn with Martin Pritchard from Environs Kimberley, unpacking the recent EPA decision to reject the proposed boat ramp and car park development at Entrance Point in Broome. Martin explains why the large-scale proposal raised serious concerns, from the impact on sandstone cliffs and marine life to the protection of 130-million-year-old dinosaur footprints and a beach that holds deep meaning for local families and Traditional Owners. The conversation reflects on why Entrance Point is such a special place, shaped by generations of community connection, recreation, and care for Country. The discussion also looks at practical ways forward, including improving existing boat ramps, sharing local boating knowledge, and working with Broome’s powerful tides rather than trying to tame them with concrete. It’s a reminder that safety, access, and environmental protection can go hand in hand when local voices are listened to. The episode wraps with an update on the Big Mountain fracking proposal, including how people can still make submissions and be part of the growing community response.
