S2 Ep2230: BOOK TALK Deb Carson: Author Bonnie Freidman's Don't Stop
Ina is a 41-year-old literary scholar on the cusp of professional success. With a coveted university job, a kind husband, and a book on Eugene O’Neill due in months, her life appears enviably stable. But when an impulsive kiss with a stranger shatters her self-control, Ina finds herself plunged into an erotic and emotional freefall. She tells herself it’s research—a brief detour before returning to real life. But what begins as a flirtation becomes a reckoning with everything Ina thought she wanted: marriage, intellect, control. As she navigates the ecstatic confusion of newfound desire, she risks upending her work, her relationship, and her understanding of who she is. Set in Brooklyn and Manhattan at the turn of the millennium, Don’t Stop is a bold, immersive debut that explores what happens when a woman dares to want more—of the world, of her body, of herself. S2 Ep2227: SUNKEN GARDENS Jennifer Tyson Previews Upcoming Events
Waterwise Gardening and Rainwater TalkHi, this is Jennifer Tyson, Education Coordinator at St Pete’s Sunken Gardens at 1825 4th St N. The dog days of summer are here, and in Florida that means stress on plants in Florida gardens – and stressed out Florida gardeners! The good news? Hot, sunny days during a record-breaking drought don’t have to parch your plants too badly if you grow like a true Floridian. Enjoying native and Florida-friendly plants that are drought tolerant is easier than you think. Native plants have evolved to sustain or even thrive in our dry periods and provide color and support for pollinators all year long. The cheerful dune sunflower and native grasses under our mid-century neon sign are a beautiful example and are blooming now. All are invited to learn how to incorporate 20 Easy-to-Grow wildflowers for Florida Gardens into an outdoor space, even a container garden, this Saturday, July 18, from 11am-noon. Participants will take home free seeds and a companion publication for the talk, created by the Florida Wildflower Foundation. Even drought tolerant plants aren’t drought proof, but that’s where rain barrels come in to save the day. Capturing precious rainwater is as easy as placing one underneath an area of your roof that is missing a gutter. We use Bti granules to eliminate mosquito larvae in standing water, which is perfect for rain barrels. This naturally occurring bacteria targets mosquito larvae and is not harmful to humans or other wildlife. Sunken Gardens guests can learn various ways to harness rainwater on Friday, July 24, from 11 am – noon when Melissa West of UF/IFAS Pinellas County Extension will discuss how to set up rain barrels for use in landscapes and more. Both talks are free with gardens admission or membership and held in our air-conditioned Garden Room. No preregistration required. Stay tuned for more news and gardening tips from Sunken Gardens! See you at the magical land of flowers, flamingos, and more very soon!

S2 Ep2217: GOOD DEEDS AARP Community Challenger Grants Awarded To 5 Tampa Bay Organizations
In this episode of Good Deeds, host Nanette Wiser catches up with Maryanna Antoldi | Associate State Director of Communications of AARP Florida about AARP's recent windfall of $55,000 for five Tampa Bay region organizations as part of nationwide program to strengthen communities.👉 View the full list of grantees and their projects at aarp.org/communitychallenge. 👉 Learn more about AARP Florida’s work to support livable communities at aarp.org/FLLivable.On June 24th, AARP announced that five organizations across Hillsborough, Polk and Pinellas counties have received a 2026 Community Challenge grant. Marking the program’s 10th anniversary, these grants are part of an $8.3 million commitment by AARP, doubling last year’s total to fund 750 quick-action projects nationwide aimed at making communities more livable for people of all ages, especially older adults. Projects across the Tampa Bay region reflect growing demand for practical, local solutions that help residents stay connected, safe and independent. Organizations and their funded projects include: City of Lakeland, Lakeland, Fla. – The city will improve pedestrian safety along a busy boulevard by installing crosswalk signage, pavement striping and a speed table. These upgrades will create a safer, more walkable connection between nearby housing and activity centers. Florida Home Partnership Inc., Ruskin, Fla. – Safety upgrades will be made in 30 homes for older adults including grab bars, railings, and improved lighting. These updates will help reduce fall risks and make it easier for people to age in place. Friends of Trails Crossing, St. Petersburg, Fla. – Three bike audits will review safe access along the Pinellas Trail for older riders. Learnings will help shape future improvements to support mobility and independence. The City of Gulfport, Gulfport, Fla. – The Discover Gulfport Walking Trail system will receive clear signage and accessibility features along nine miles of routes. This includes direction signs, trail names, map boards, QR codes for digital maps, and handrails where they’re needed most. Volunteers in Service to the Elderly (VISTE), Lakeland, Fla.– Skilled volunteers will help build entry ramps and other accessibility features for older adults with mobility challenges. These safer entrances may lower the risk of falls and make it easier for residents to age in place. “Communities across Florida are eager for real solutions that boost mobility, connection, and quality of life,” said Jeff Johnson, State Director at AARP Florida. “These projects will bring real improvement to Hillsborough, Pinellas and Polk counties by improving accessibility, transportation methods, pedestrian safety, and digital literacy across the region. We’re excited to see these come to life.”Since 2017, AARP has invested over $24.3 million toward 2,100 livability projects – including 64 in Florida – to nonprofit organizations and local government entities across the state. This year, 24 total grants were awarded to Florida-based organizations, totaling over $200,000. Grant projects will be funded in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.About AARP AARP is the nation's largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering Americans 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. S2 Ep2214: ARTS ALIVE! St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung: Neverne Covington @Morean Arts
Our guest today in the Arts Alive! studio is longtime St. Petersburg artist Neverne Covington, who has a solo exhibition, Into the Mystic, debuting Saturday at the Morean Arts Center. She’ll be at the opening reception, 5-9 p.m., which just so happens to coincide with the July Second Saturday ArtWalk. Covington made a living for many years as a commercial illustrator, drawing, inking and painting everything from book covers to frozen vegetable packages (something she created is probably still on the shelves in your neighborhood Publix, as a matter of fact). Making art as a purely creative endeavor won out, however, and today she is a prolific producer of oils, watercolors, sculpture, assemblage, drawings and encaustics (painting with dyed hot wax). Many of her paintings are deeply impressionistic and almost abstract interpretations of the things she sees, hears, feels and experiences. Covington is a believer in the philosophies of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, who famously explored the balance between the conscious and unconscious mind. All of which leads directly Into the Mystic.#billdeyoung #stpetecatalyst #artsalive #moreanartscenter #nevernecovington #intothe mystic #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep2211: LIVE LIFE BETTER Poison Prevention Tips & New Research
In this episode of Live Life Better, host Nanette Wiser talks about a new study that ranks as the single biggest cause of preventable death in the United States, killing 75,761 Americans in 2024... around 208 people a day. It is 1.8 times deadlier than motor vehicle crashes and 1.6 times deadlier than falls. Poisoning has held the top spot since 2013, driven by a drug overdose crisis that shows no sign of ending. Synthetic opioids such as fentanyl caused 45,917 of those deaths. Opioids overall caused 51,088. A recent study revealed:• Poisoning caused 75,761 preventable deaths in 2024 - more than motor vehicle crashes (42,789) and falls (48,308) combined• Synthetic opioids including fentanyl caused 45,917 deaths; all opioids combined caused 51,088• Poisoning has been the leading cause of preventable death in the US every year since 2013Why This Matters Now For much of the 20th century, motor vehicle crashes led the preventable death list. Poisoning took over in 2013 and has not looked back. The gap between poisoning (75,761) and falls (48,308) (the second-ranked cause) is 27,453 lives a year. Against motor vehicle crashes (42,789), the margin is 32,972. Poisoning does not slightly lead the list. It dominates it. The overdose crisis reaches every working-age group. Poisoning was the leading cause of preventable death for people aged between 25 and 34, 35 and 44, 45 and 54, and 55 and 64. In West Virginia, preventable injury death rates reached 138.2 per 100,000 for adults aged between 35 and 39, and 151.3 for those aged between 40 and 44 - showing how concentrated the toll is in the communities hardest hit.The picture has improved slightly. Poisoning deaths fell 24% in 2024, linked to expanded naloxone access and changes in the illicit drug supply. That drop was the main driver of the overall 11.3% fall in preventable deaths recorded that year. But 75,761 deaths still represent nearly 1.8 times the pre-pandemic baseline, and the 2024 age-adjusted preventable death rate of 52.1 per 100,000 remains well above the 1992 historic low of 34.Data courtesy of a study by The Schiller Kessler Group. #livelifebetter #preventpoisoning #nanettewiser

S2 Ep2200: PASSION STRUCK John R. Miles: Elizabeth Weingarten
(Airs 7/28/2026) Elizabeth Weingarten on How to Fall in Love with Questions In this powerful episode of Passion Struck, John R. Miles is joined by journalist and applied behavioral scientist Elizabeth Weingarten, author of How to Fall in Love with Questions. Together, they explore the transformative potential of living with uncertainty — and why our biggest, most uncomfortable questions might be our most valuable teachers. Drawing on insights from her own life, cutting-edge research, and the timeless wisdom of Rainer Maria Rilke, Elizabeth argues that our culture’s obsession with easy answers is failing us. Instead of avoiding uncertainty, she encourages us to embrace it — not just intellectually, but emotionally and behaviorally. What if the most powerful tool for bridging divides isn’t a better argument, but a better question? In a time when certainty is idolized and moral clarity often masquerades as moral superiority, Elizabeth Weingarten invites us to reconsider the role of questions in our lives. On this episode of the Passion Struck podcast, we explore how falling in love with questions — rather than rushing toward answers — can reshape the way we engage with the world and with ourselves.Explore More: The Ignited Life Newsletter If today’s episode sparked something in you, you’ll love The Ignited Life—our free Substack newsletter created to fuel your growth between episodes. S2 Ep2191: ARTS ALIVE! St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung with Owen Robertson
Playwright Wendy Graf’s The Cross and the Saber is a sobering drama set in the not-too-distant future. The play, now through July 19 at LAB Theater Project in Ybor City, gives us an America ruled by a totalitarian government that does not tolerate dissent of any kind. That’s a problem for Rev. Isaiah Proffit, who sees the separation of church and state becoming ever-narrower. As The Cross and the Saber begins, Proffit has been jailed for his “extremist” ideas, which go against the strict edicts of the country’s Great Leader and his creepily mechanized minions. Host Bill DeYoung talks with LAB founder and executive producer Owen Robertson about the production, and why it’s onstage during America’s 250th birthday celebrations (hint: it was on purpose). He discusses the cast, the use of stage technology, and the LAB manifesto: putting up plays that have never before been produced anywhere (this is the world premiere of Graf’s show). There are lighthearted moments in The Cross and the Saber, but at its core it’s a red flag about what could conceivably result from a massive, governmental mind-and-body takeover.#billdeyoung #owenrobertston #LABtheaterproject #YborCity #theater #artsalive #stpetecatalyst #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep2190: PET TIPS Calm Your Dog Before Fireworks
In this episode of Pet Tips, host Nanette Wiser reminds you not to wait till 4th of July to prep your dog for fireworks noise. If your dog has severe noise phobia or panic attacks, talk to your veterinarian before the holiday begins. They can safely prescribe situational anti-anxiety medications.Pre-Fireworks Prep Work Tire them out: Go for a long run or play an extended game of fetch earlier in the day. A physically exhausted dog will be much more relaxed. Potty early: Get all bathroom breaks out of the way well before dusk. Never leave a stressed dog outside during a fireworks show. Prep the environment: Close all windows, blinds, and curtains to block out the flashes of light. Layer two forms of background noise (such as a TV show combined with a box fan) to help mask the sudden pops. Create a safe den: Set up their crate or a cozy corner in a central, interior room like a bathroom or closet with their favorite blankets. Try calming gear: Put on a gentle compression vest like the ThunderShirt to provide a swaddling effect. You can also try noise-canceling ear bands. Offer high-value treats: Keep their minds occupied with treats in a toy to distract them. Stay normal and neutral: Dogs look to their pack leaders for cues. Act as though nothing unusual is happening. While you can gently comfort them, avoid overly dramatic, high-pitched soothing, which can accidentally reinforce their fear. #petips #petsafety #dogs #nanettewiser

S2 Ep2189: Historic Gas Plant Press Conference 7-2-26
On July 2, 2026, St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch officially announced his selection of The Burg Bid team, led by St. Pete-based Blake Investment Partners (in partnership with Related Group), to take over the massive redevelopment of the 86-acre Historic Gas Plant District. This decision marks a major turning point for the city following the collapse of the previous Hines-Rays stadium and mixed-use agreement earlier in 2025.Key Elements of Blake Investment Partners' "The Burg Bid" Proposal: Massive Housing Commitment: The estimated $8 billion plan promises the largest delivery of affordable and workforce housing in city history, projected at more than 3,600 units (to be delivered both on- and off-site). Cultural & Public Space: A planned 15-acre central park anchored by a "Museum Row," featuring a brand-new building for the Woodson African American Museum of Florida as its centerpiece. Economic & Community Focus: The plan features a dedicated workforce training and small-business success center, 400,000 square feet of retail space, and office space managed alongside partners like Stadler Development. Honoring the Legacy: The team established a "Historic Gas Plant Visionary Panel," a volunteer advisory committee made up of leaders from over 20 local organizations to ensure the site honors the predominantly Black neighborhood that was displaced decades ago. A Two-Pronged ApproachIn addition to the Blake Investment Partners selection for the main 58-acre portion of the property, Mayor Welch simultaneously selected the Pinellas County Housing Authority to develop a standalone, 7-story, 80-unit affordable senior housing community on a city-owned parcel at 1659 Third Ave. S. What Happens Next? The selection moves the project into its next formal phase. Mayor Welch and city staff will now begin negotiating a formal term sheet and contract. The proposal will then head to the Community Benefits Advisory Council (CBAC) for vetting before going to the St. Petersburg City Council for final approval. Audio from City of St. Petersburg.
