Episode 17 - Cheltenhamshire, la, la, la

This week we have Greg the Cheltenham Town FC fan come on to tell us his fan origin story.Cheltenham Town FC – Club OverviewCheltenham Town Football Club is a professional football club based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. Known as "The Robins," the club has seen a remarkable rise through the English football pyramid since 1989. At that time, Cheltenham were playing in the Southern League (sixth tier) but began a steady climb under manager Steve Cotterill, culminating in promotion to the Football League in 1999 for the first time in the club’s history.Cheltenham quickly established themselves in League football, winning the FA Trophy in 1998 and securing promotion to the third tier (then Division Two) via the playoffs in 2002. Though they experienced relegations in subsequent seasons, the club demonstrated resilience, bouncing back to League One in 2006. After fluctuating between League One and League Two, Cheltenham faced relegation to the National League in 2015.Under manager Gary Johnson, the Robins responded swiftly, winning the National League title in 2015-16 to return to the EFL at the first attempt. In recent years, the club has continued to punch above its weight. Under Michael Duff’s management, Cheltenham won the League Two title in the 2020-21 season—their first ever EFL title—earning promotion to League One, where they have competed with determination despite limited resources.Whaddon Road (currently known as the Completely-Suzuki Stadium for sponsorship reasons) has been the club’s home since 1932. Cheltenham Town is known for its strong community ties, well-organised football, and consistent overachievement given its size. The club continues to solidify its position in the Football League, striving for stability and success in England’s competitive lower divisions. If you'd like to come on and chat about your fandom then drop us a line at [email protected] and also find the pod on the following social media platforms:X - https://x.com/RandomFandomFCThreads - https://www.threads.net/@randomfandomfcBluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/randomfandomfc.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/randomfandomfc/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61571955523995

    Episode 16 - It'll be all White

This week it is the turn of Leeds United as I welcome season ticket holder (home & away), David onto the pod.It was a great time to talk to him considering Leeds just won the Championship title yesterday with a very late winner away at Plymouth.Leeds United FC – Club OverviewLeeds United Football Club is a professional football club based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Originally formed in 1919 following the disbanding of Leeds City FC, the club became a major force in English football during the 1960s and 1970s under legendary manager Don Revie, winning two First Division titles and several domestic and European honours. From 1980 onwards, Leeds experienced dramatic highs and lows. After relegation from the First Division in 1982, the club spent much of the 1980s in the second tier before returning to the top flight in 1990 under Howard Wilkinson. Just two years later, in the 1991-92 season, Leeds won the final First Division title before the inception of the Premier League. The club maintained Premier League status throughout the 1990s and enjoyed a resurgence under manager David O’Leary, reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 2000 and the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2001 with a talented young squad. However, financial mismanagement and overspending led to a steep decline. Leeds were relegated from the Premier League in 2004 and dropped as far as League One (third tier) by 2007. After several turbulent years, including administration and ownership changes, Leeds began a steady rebuild. The club returned to the Championship in 2010 and finally secured promotion back to the Premier League in 2020 under Marcelo Bielsa, ending a 16-year top-flight absence. Bielsa's tenure earned admiration for its exciting, high-intensity football and strong connection with fans. However they were relegated again but secured promotion back to the Premier league by winning the 2024/25 Championship title.Elland Road, the club’s iconic home since 1919, remains one of English football's most historic stadiums. Leeds United has a passionate and widespread fanbase and fierce rivalries, particularly with Manchester United and historically with Chelsea. Despite recent relegation battles and managerial changes, Leeds continues to be a significant presence in English football with aspirations to re-establish itself in the Premier League.

Founded in 1886 as Dial Square by munitions workers in Woolwich, the club later became known as Royal Arsenal, then Woolwich Arsenal, before settling on its current name. Arsenal moved to Highbury in 1913 and became a major force in English football under manager Herbert Chapman in the 1930s, introducing tactical innovations and winning multiple league titles.Arsenal has won 13 league titles, including an unbeaten league campaign in the 2003-04 season—known as "The Invincibles"—a rare achievement in top-flight football. The club has also won a record 14 FA Cups, demonstrating consistent success in domestic competitions. Under long-serving manager Arsène Wenger, who led the team from 1996 to 2018, Arsenal became known for their attractive, attacking football and developed a strong emphasis on youth and financial prudence. The club moved from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium in 2006, a modern 60,000-capacity venue. Arsenal maintains fierce rivalries, particularly with Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby and with Manchester United stemming from their intense battles in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Founded in 1880 as St. Mark’s (West Gorton), the club adopted its current name in 1894. City has experienced various highs and lows throughout its history but has become one of the most dominant forces in world football in recent years. The club won its first major honor in 1904, securing the FA Cup, and went on to claim two First Division titles before the Premier League era (1936-37 and 1967-68). After a period of decline, including relegation to the third tier in the late 1990s, City’s fortunes changed dramatically following the club’s takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008. With significant investment and top-tier management, including Pep Guardiola, City has become a powerhouse, winning multiple Premier League titles, including a historic treble (Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League) in the 2022-23 season. The club has won nine English league titles, seven FA Cups, eight League Cups, and the UEFA Champions League, securing their place among Europe's elite. Episode 10 - Coming to America (Hopefully this time)

This week we do something a little different as I lean into the International break and use it to talk about supporting England.  I'm joined by fellow English fan John and we look back at our first memories, highs/lows, and a look ahead to what Tuchel may do in the job. Before we catch up with him we recap the Lincoln score from last week via another live match report from Simon.England Men's National Football Team - OverviewThe England men's national football team represents England in international football and is governed by The Football Association (FA). Established in 1872, England played in the first-ever international football match against Scotland, making it one of the oldest national teams in the world.England’s most iconic achievement came in 1966 when they won the FIFA World Cup on home soil. Managed by Sir Alf Ramsey and captained by Bobby Moore, the team defeated West Germany 4-2 after extra time at Wembley Stadium, with Geoff Hurst scoring a historic hat-trick. Since then, England has reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 1990 and 2018, consistently competing at the highest level but often falling short of major tournament victories. In the UEFA European Championship, England's best performances came in 2021 and 2024, when they reached the final but were defeated on penalties by Italy and then by Spain. The team has just started it's World Cup qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup under the watchful eye of new manager, Thomas Tuchel. Can he lead the three lions to glory - only time will tell. With a squad featuring some of the world’s best players, a rich footballing heritage, and one of the most passionate fanbases globally, England continues to be a powerhouse in international football, aiming to add more silverware to its history.

Episode 8 - For all Ram Kind

This week I welcome Steve onto Random Fandom to chat about Derby County. Before we get to him we need to do the match report for Liverpool and see how John & I got on with our predictions.Derby County FC - Club OverviewFounded in 1884, Derby County is one of England’s oldest football clubs and has a rich history in the domestic game. Based in Derby, the club was one of the 12 founding members of the Football League in 1888. They initially played at the Racecourse Ground before moving to the Baseball Ground in 1895, which remained their home for over a century before relocating to Pride Park Stadium in 1997.Derby’s greatest successes came in the 1970s under legendary managers Brian Clough and Dave Mackay. Clough led the Rams to their first-ever league title in 1971-72, transforming them into one of the top teams in England. After Clough’s controversial departure, Mackay continued the club’s success, guiding them to a second First Division title in 1974-75. The club also enjoyed memorable European campaigns during this period.Following relegation from the top flight in the early 1980s, Derby endured fluctuating fortunes, experiencing promotions and relegations across divisions. The late 1990s saw a return to the Premier League under Jim Smith, with players like Paulo Wanchope and Stefano Eranio becoming fan favourites. However, financial struggles and inconsistent performances led to another period of decline, with the club experiencing administration in 2021-22, resulting in a points deduction and relegation to League One.Now rebuilding under new ownership, Derby County remains a club with a proud history, passionate supporters, and ambitions to return to the upper echelons of English football. Here are a couple of linke to the goals Steve talks aboutPaulo Wanchope vs Man Utdhttps://youtu.be/LVdaDkiIOfM?si=MOheC-wiWNCWPNq-Charlie George vs Real Madridhttps://youtu.be/eRCyeGKCt74?si=3NQhnNf51ZYdQF5EIf you'd like to come on and chat about your fandom then drop us a line at [email protected] and also find the pod on the following social media platforms:X - https://x.com/RandomFandomFCThreads - https://www.threads.net/@randomfandomfcBluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/randomfandomfc.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/randomfandomfc/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61571955523995

The 1990s and early 2000s saw Liverpool struggle to reclaim past glories, though they won domestic and European trophies, including the remarkable 2005 Champions League victory in Istanbul, where they came back from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties.A new golden era arrived under Jürgen Klopp, who took charge in 2015. They remained in League One for over two decades before a further decline saw them drop into League Two in 2018. In 2022, Oldham became the first former Premier League club to be relegated from the Football League, falling into the National League. Despite off-field struggles, a new era began with the 2022 takeover by local businessman Frank Rothwell, bringing renewed optimism to the club.Boundary Park remains Oldham’s home, a ground they have played at since 1904. Originally an amateur club, it became a professional outfit in 1905 and has since competed in the top two tiers of English football. The club's most notable achievement came in the 1990-91 season when they finished third in the First Division, narrowly missing out on a UEFA Cup spot due to England's unranked status in European competitions at the time.Over the years, Crystal Palace has produced several famous players who have left a lasting impact on the club. Ian Wright, a prolific striker, also made a significant mark during his time at Selhurst Park. Founded in 1886, the club has a long history in the English Football League and currently competes in EFL League One. They play their home games at Montgomery Waters Meadow, a modern 10,000-seater stadium that replaced the historic Gay Meadow in 2007.Throughout their history, The Shrews have experienced highs and lows, moving between divisions and earning a reputation as a resilient side. Their best spell in the league system saw them spend ten seasons in the old Second Division (now the Championship) between 1979 and 1989. In recent years, they’ve established themselves as a solid League One side, often flirting with the play-offs but yet to secure promotion to the second tier in the modern era.The club has enjoyed some memorable cup runs, with their best FA Cup performance coming in 1979 when they reached the quarter-finals, knocking out teams like Manchester City along the way. More recently, they’ve put up spirited performances against Premier League opposition, holding the likes of Liverpool and West Ham to draws in the competition. Their only major trophy to date is the EFL Trophy, which they won in 1996 after defeating Rotherham United at Wembley.Shrewsbury’s fanbase is known for its loyalty and passion, with rivalries against Walsall and, historically, Wolverhampton Wanderers adding an edge to certain fixtures. The club’s identity is built around a hardworking, disciplined style of play, often punching above their weight against bigger clubs in the division. While they may not have the financial clout of some of their League One counterparts, The Shrews continue to prove themselves as a well-run, competitive side. With a strong foundation and ambitions to return to the Championship, Shrewsbury remains a club that consistently challenges expectations and upsets the odds.If you'd like to come on and chat about your fandom then drop us a line at [email protected] and also find the pod on the following social media platforms:X - https://x.com/RandomFandomFCThreads - https://www.threads.net/@randomfandomfcBluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/randomfandomfc.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/randomfandomfc/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61571955523995
