Why Your New Year's Resolutions are Failing (and what to do instead)

Another January, another resolution to lose weight, get in shape, or finally become the "perfect" version of yourself. And another February, where 80% of us have already given up.In this week's episode of Real Talk for Real Women, Dr. T and I are talking about why New Year's resolutions fail - and it's not because you lack willpower. It's because most resolutions are focused on how others perceive us, not on what actually makes us feel better. We're chasing appearance, performance, or productivity- external measures that leave us feeling empty even when we achieve them.

    Nontraditional Families

What even counts as "traditional" anymore? On the new episode of Real Talk for Real Women, Dr. Tiffany Tonismae and I tackle family structures that don't fit the mold: stay-at-home dads, single mothers by choice, working moms who want to work, and everything in between.Dr. T opens up about the conversation she and her husband had when they decided it was best for him to stay home and take care of their daughter. I share some moments of guilt where I feel like I'm not showing up as my best self-, both as a mom and an entrepreneur. The balancing act is TOUGH! So we talk about. Also, we brought in my friend Hayley Minogue, 99.7 DJX radio host, corporate leader, and a mom doing it differently, to share her perspective on what it really looks like to build a family on your own terms.

Meet your hosts- Journalist Shay McAlister and Dr. Tiffany Tonismae

I first met Dr. T during an interview on live television. We were discussing Black maternal health. We had three minutes to cover a crisis that's killing women. Three minutes to discuss systemic failures, racial disparities, and preventable deaths. I remember thinking: this isn't helpful. This podcast is what that conversation should have been. Time to go deep, space to be honest, and room to share not just the data but our own experiences living and working in these systems. Each month, we're tackling the topics that matter: women's health, parenting, careers, mental health, loss, fertility, and the reality of balancing it all. We bring medical expertise and journalistic rigor to conversations that are too often sanitized or ignored. Also, we're living it ourselves and are committed to including our own journeys in the conversation. This is for every woman navigating the gap between what we're told life should look like and what it actually is. Whether you're building a family, building a career, or trying to keep your head above water doing both - this is real talk, no filter.
