They will tell you wild and crazy stories, Intense stories and words of wisdom from lessons learned. The stories are real, however, due to the sensitive nature of the calls; names, places and specific names of the department and storyteller may be withheld or changed. James Ghi served the community as a firefighter for 34 years in several different fire departments in different roles, from a volunteer at 16 years old, to finishing out his career as a Chief Fire Marshal Battalion Fire Chief with the St. Johns Fire District in South Carolina. He served in Maryland, Virginia and in South Carolina. He came to the Charleston, S.C. Fire Department shortly after the devastating fire at the Sofa Superstore Outlet to help them recover from the loss of nine fire fighters. Over the course of two years, he faced an uphill battle to provide better training, however; succeeded in making that department a much better trained and equipped fire fighting force.
