Roel Funcken

by Roel Funcken

Roel Funcken officially popped up on the scene in 2010, with his solo debut, titled Vade, out on Ad Noiseam. But fans of electronic music, and IDM in general, have been tracking this Dutch musician for over a decade prior, when, along with his brother, Don, the duo has released some of the genre defining music on labels such as Djak-Up-Bitch, Schematic, Sublight Records, Neo Ouija, n5MD , Arcola (Warp) as the one and only Funckarma. In 2009 the Funcken brothers kicked off their very own, digital-only, Funcken Industry imprint, which hosted a few of their other projects and offshoots, such as Shadow Huntaz, Scone, Quench, Automotive, and the latest from Roel's solo works. Roel continues to influence the evolution of music through numerous releases (Sapper Morton on Analogical Force, Semtinal Convex on Methlab and Prester Hynn on his own imprint to name a few) and active engagement in the community, with music festival curation, mixes on mixlr and soundcloud and weekly playlists on Sound

  1. Citer

Another track called Citer for you to listen to and stream from my latest album, Kine 3. The album came out last Friday and is available exclusively through Bandcamp — digitally, with only a few CDs left. This is one of the few tracks on the album that still sits in that hybrid space: part…

  3. Draks

Dropping next week on Old Technology — the imprint steered by Surgeon and Dean — this is my third collaboration with EXM. We went deeper this time. Proper signal fusion. Cross-patching mental architectures. IDM as a shared system: polyrhythmic structures, evolving modulation paths, harmonic…

  4. Vict

One of my favorite tracks from Kine 2, and probably the most unhinged in the best way. Vict is a fast, trigger-driven patch — dense with probability, bursts of activity, sudden gaps. It fires rapidly, but never quite where you expect it. A kind of controlled emptiness. Chaos with intention. Kine…

  5. Fow4m5

Fow4m5 is a slow-burning piece built on unstable rhythmic structures, soft synth layers, and modular textures that subtly shift over time. Like the rest of KINE 2, it balances precision and fragility — polyrhythms unfold patiently while evolving tones blur the line between melody and texture. A...

  6. Culpt3

Culpt is the second track from Kine 2, continuing the evolving language of the KINE series. Built from a hybrid approach of software and modular synthesis, the track moves slowly but with constant internal motion — layered rhythms, shifting textures, and carefully shaped tones folding into one...

  7. Kine 1.3

Over the past year, a substantial body of work emerged—nearly one hundred tracks—largely rooted in modular synthesis and occasionally blended with software-based processes. Rather than forcing these pieces into traditional release cycles, the artist revisited the material and approached it as…
