Stephen Grove | Part 2 - Supercars team ownership & hitting the headlines.
The decision, around the time of the pandemic, to buy a team, why he was ready and relished the new challenge. Working with the Kelly’s and Ford as they set out to build a leading outfit in the ultra competitive Supercars pit lane and why he believes they are not there yet. Reflections on his drivers Kai Allen and what makes him so good. Negotiating speed humps with the brilliant Matt Payne and why their direct relationship is still tight. Plus securing Garth Tander and the impact he’s had on the team as they grew. The importance he places in the Grove junior program, the ‘fight’ or tenacity he looks for in those young racers and dealing with difficult decisions when it doesn’t work out. We give Stephen the space to place some context around a recent headline about being here to dominate too. N.B. This episode was recorded before the Supercars Court of Appeal Hearing into the Governing Body’s (Motorsport Australia) decision not penalise the team for an alleged tyre pressure regulation breach in Perth recently. Stephen Grove | Part 1 - meeting Greg Norman & quietly building an empire.
A long form feature interview like this is something new for the Penrite Racing team owner & we’re delighted he’s joined us in the Garage studio. Building golf courses in the early days including one for the Sultan of Brunei. A window into his success mindset - stopping to savour the 2025 Bathurst 1000 win isn’t something he did for too long, it’s the same in business. Going back to Uni while juggling a young family and diving in to what would quietly become a huge business covering modular construction, equipment hire, property development and more. Fans can see some of Grove’s modular construction at the F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne for example as quality trackside corporate facilities. Discovering the pure joy of driving race cars through a mate and becoming hooked! And how a toe in the water sponsorship with the Tasman Supercars team almost 20 years ago set the wheels in motion. Like the Tony Quinn & Sam Shahin ep’s you’ll love the business takeaways here and the parallels with Motorsport. This convo will help you get to know a success driven leader who would ordinarily prefer to work out of the limelight but the public game of Supercars has changed that. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback, and let us know who you want to hear from on Rusty's Garage.

Re-Release: Garry Rush - ‘The Master Blaster’
The Australian Speedway great amassed 10 national Sprintcar titles during his decorated career. Recorded in 2019 many fans may not realise that ‘Rushy’ is in our library. This relaxed and candid convo remains a personal and professional highlight of Rusty’s career having captured Garry’s autograph as a young fan, something Greg has kept to this day.We also talk Speedcars, racing in the US, a frightening crash in the States and a little known chapter in single seaters that briefly took him to the UK with a loose plan to eventually get to Formula 1. Garry recently celebrated his 82nd birthday and it’s been almost exactly 7 years since we released this ep. Back then Sydney Speedway or Parramatta, as it was affectionately known, was still around and the new venue at Eastern Creek was just a design or set of plans. From hair raising stories towing race cars in his early days to being inducted in the Australian Motorsport and Speedway Australia Halls of Fame…what a ride. https://www.australianmotorsporthalloffame.com.au/inductees/garry-rush/ Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback, and let us know who you want to hear from on Rusty's Garage. The Motorsport Brief | Motorsport Memorabilia with Miguel Ramos
Originally from Adelaide but beaming in from his base in LA now Miguel talks about how a childhood love of sport, admiration for athletes and early collecting habits that started him on this journey. The teenage trip to America that opened his eyes to the memorabilia business while hoping to meet and watch the legendary Michael Jordan play. Being trusted by Muhammad Ali for a decade and the surreal moment with him on Mick Doohan’s boat ‘My Way’ on Sydney Harbour during the 2000 Olympic Games. Working with ‘Mighty Mick’ and getting some of his first autographs in San Fransisco after a career changing crash. The importance of authenticating the memorabilia for both the competitor and the fan. A seriously impressive roll call of racers he has worked with in Formula 1, Supercross, MotoGP and more. The lucky charm superstition that Valentino Rossi had while signing on Grand Prix week at Phillip Island. Plus pop ups at the big races and why tangibility in his world is way more powerful than anything AI can create. Anton De Pasquale | Part 2 - Team building and dream resto projects
How he frames the highs and lows (with the benefit of time now) at DJR. The standard SVG and Scott McLaughlin lifted the sport too just as he was hitting his straps in Supercars. Mentoring and paying it forward by working with the likes of Broc Feeney in his early days and more. Regularly spending time at Team 18 HQ and hanging out with the crew (even when they’re not racing) for things like padel and cycling. And the working bond he’s forged with engineer Andrew “Donners” Donnelly. Is Anton’s calm, level headed approach, even when things aren’t going right, learned or innate? Plus finding a resto project at the right price. Let’s just say he’s just as tight as Rusty when it comes to opening the wallet! Thanks to Adrian Burgess and Mark Larkham for the insights that helped the convo in this one too. Re-Release: Jeremy Burgess - 46 years on
It’s not that long since we spoke to the great man on the pod! Back in July 1980, he was part of a 500cc Grand Prix-winning team in Belgium with a young Randy Mamola. It was Randy’s first premier-class victory and the first of many for JB. Graziano Rossi was in that same race. Years later, JB would become crew chief for his son, Valentino, who became one of the sport’s all-time greats, a rider synonymous with the number 46. Recorded in 2018, less than an hour from Adelaide (which will call the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix home in 2027), JB looks back over his stellar career, and the convo is a gem. The Australian Motorsport Hall of Famer talks about working with the legendary Mick Doohan and helping to develop the iconic Honda 500cc GP bike. Plus, there are recollections of a flashpoint in the rivalry between Valentino and Casey Stoner, as well as stories of his move with Rossi to Yamaha and the frustrations at Ducati. Trevor Sheumack | Part 2 - the Michelin Man & rallying a beast!

Taking on a motorsport tyre distributorship for Michelin and BF Goodrich and expanding the footprint into New Zealand and Asia.Bringing a Toyota Racing Series car to Australia in the hopes of broadening the successful Kiwi series to our side of the pond. And giving Neal Bates and Simon Evan’s the keys to the TRS car at Oran Park.Plus the BMW he tracked down and his plans (maybe) to take it to some races in Europe. And a beast of a rally car that is a break with tradition. This ep is part of our commitment to stories from the paddock and service park (from time-to-time) by good story tellers who are these long time, friendly, familiar faces who we often see working at events but you don’t always realise the things they’ve done or significant people they’ve worked with along the way. Trevor Sheumack | Part 1 - Fun rides & Formula Ford fabrication
There are so many stories in our sport…not just those that take home the silverware. Trevor Sheumack has been a bit of a constant for decades in various forms of Motorsport but his story isn’t limited to just Australia. His likeable nature and co-do approach to things saw him land roles with teams in Europe off the back of engineering his own cars at home. Learning valuable business lessons (outside of Motorsport) in his early 20’s that are still relevant now to being spellbound by rally cars in country NSW as a kid. Hitchhiking stories in the UK as well as memories of the old Ford factory on Parramatta Road in Sydney. And putting it on the line for a karting spectacular at the Entertainment Centre. The Motorsport Brief | F1 Austrian wrap & the Max McLaren rumours
Rusty is joined by Code Sport’s Matt Hickey for a GP convo that could have been fueled by a Schnitty and some Apfelstrudel! George Russell is back in the winner’s circle for the first time since Australia. Was he lucky to keep that pole lap? Toto Wolff’s quote of the week and how Kimi Antonelli drove with real speed and smarts on the way to the podium. Max Verstappen keeps making the difference and RedBull is pushing to keep him but with the summer break looming will a contractual escape clause be triggered? What to make of the latest McLaren rumour now that Team Verstappen has reportedly knocked on the door there. Would Lando Norris want to share the garage with Max and what could it potentially mean for Oscar Piastri? Will it even be an option given that Zak Brown says they’re happy with things right now? Plus Cadillac’s early pack up, Ferrari’s frustration and is the British anthem already cued up for the podium at this weekend’s race at Silverstone? Todd Hazelwood | Part 2 - DJR jumpsuits and Todd’s Garage
The serious health scare as a youngster and how it made him determined to realise his dreams. Mortgaging the family home and vital funding coming through while he was on track. Reality TV wins and putting the suit on for a critical meet with Matt Stone. Surrounding himself with good people to win Super 2 in a car that was stickered from top to toe. Timing and the commitment needed to graduate to the big league of Supercars. Plus the frustrations of having what it takes but not being able to fully show it. And how the switch to a co-driver role changed paddock perceptions after a dominant Bathurst win with his mate Brodie Kostecki and Erebus. The Motorsport Brief | 3rd generation racer Ryder Quinn
We recorded this one with the final podium of the weekend underway for the Speed Series round at Queensland Raceway and pack down starting. Ryder Quinn is only in his early 20’s but is now part of the BMW M racing academy. He has the trademark Quinn family work ethic away from the track but has been round the sport since before he could walk. Ryder’s late start in the sport, how it came about and the huge learning curve he’s been on since then. A special helmet he made for his Grandfather, Tony Quinn, that left ‘Popeye’ as Ryder calls him speechless. The GT4 race that really put him on the map after charging through the field with fastest lap after fastest lap. And going to Bathurst for a history making family 12hour entry and how Ryder wowed the gun internationals with his performance. Michael Dowson | Part 1 - Hansford’s brilliance and wheelies at Bathurst
Thanks to all of our loyal listeners who messaged and asked for this one. It’s an overdue chat with a bike racing legend who was just as skillful in Touring Cars. The unexpected medical benefits of heading west as a youngster and how early experiences with dirt bikes made a powerful impact. His vivid recollections of the late Gregg Hansford at Waneroo and how he was spellbound by his riding. The advice from a rival who convinced Dowson’s incredibly supportive parents that he had the right stuff but a move to the east coast might open more doors. Plus a connection to Supercars commentator Chad Neylon and being brave enough to hold it wide open at Bathurst. The Motorsport Brief | Tim Schenken from the Garage back catalogue
The next two weeks are some of the best on the annual Motorsport calendar with the Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 hours of Le Mans. For this episode of the Brief we have gone right back to season 1 (2018) to bring you a slice of an episode you may not have heard before - Tim Schenken. Tim is one of only a handful of Aussie’s to race Formula 1 at Monaco and he went on to race sportscars for Ferrari. Working with an emerging Ron Dennis and memories of Bernie Ecclestone, a then relatively new player in F1. A respected Clerk of the Course at the Australian Grand Prix who has been awarded and OAM for his services and rightly inducted into the Hall of Fame. Brendon Leitch | Part 1 - workshop lessons & cold calls
Growing up at the bottom of the world and the strong Leitch racing genes. Being round his Dad Barry’s internationally respected Motorsport restoration business and how that ‘hands on’ learning helps to this day. Getting creative to find the budget to go racing and heading off with props in his backpack after school. Working at Highlands Motorsport Park and for Scott O’Donnell (now part owner for Walkinshaw TWG Racing) in the early years. The respect for his brother Damon’s talent and Brendon’s little known cooking skills. What it was like to only race five weekends over the New Zealand summer (on a shoe string budget) but to beat some F1 stars of the future! And the bollocking he received from a respected team manager that Brendon says helped shape his career. Plus a funny rental car adventure in Japan. And how will his Mercedes teammate George Russell respond when he thought it was going to be his year? The Oscar Piastri/RedBull rumor and the likelihood Max Verstappen will pull up stumps on Formula One given how much he’s enjoying GT racing now. Could Sir Lewis Hamilton call time on his F1 career at the British Grand Prix. And the new regs. With time & continued tuning will the racing actually end up properly exciting? Why his Dad wasn’t keen to begin with and where he gets his trademark commitment and determination. The much loved officials (who were part of the fabric of the sport) that quietly turned a blind eye to allow him to compete in his teens. And the bike that really started the journey on his rise to Mr Motocross. Befriending and battling the late Anthony Gunter or ‘Grunt’ as they called him. Kenny Smith | Part 1 - a good bet & waking up with silver feet!
One of the all time greats of Motorsport from the Tasman region is finally on the pod. Ken Smith has been racing since 1958 and he’s still going! The family’s love for another kind of horsepower and how Kenny would sometimes hold up the motor racing schedule to check how his horse went. Competing against (and socializing after) with some absolute legends of the 60’s and early 70’s….Graham Hill, Bruce McLaren, Jimmy Clark, Jack Brabham and many more. His gravitation to single seater racing and winning the prestigious New Zealand Grand Prix for the first time in 1976. He then had an agonizing 14 year wait to do it again in 1990 and then another 14 year gap to his third in 2004. Even at age 84 Kenny is still razor sharp and the memories that surround us in his workshop where we recorded make for constant conversation starters. How he helped bank roll a good portion of Roberto Moreno’s summer of racing in NZ without dipping into his own pockets. (You can hear more about this in Roberto’s Feature Ep in our library). And a friendship with Jimmy Richards that dates back to their early days. We won’t get to every one of the 160 plus cars he’s raced but the chat gives you an incredible snapshot of a life lived at full throttle. Kenny Smith | Part 2 - mentoring Scott Dixon & iconic single seaters.
Awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 1987 for services to Motorsport Ken Smith wasn’t about to let that be a book end to his career. There was still so much more he wanted to do. His eye for talent and the significant help he gave in the background to sure up the future of some modern day stars. Working with Indycar great Scott Dixon, World Sportscar and Le Mans 24 hour winner Brendon Hartley, 4-time Bathurst winner Greg Murphy (in his early days) as well as Shane van Gisbergen and Liam Lawson. Trading blows with Craig Baird and Paul Radisich as they climbed the ladder. Reflections on the lovely constant for so much of his racing, his late Mother Dorothy. And we’ll talk about the cool cars that surround us in the 5-time Gold Star winner’s workshop. Plus the odd saloon car drive and much more. The numbers seem hard to comprehend, 50 starts in the New Zealand Grand Prix, almost 70 years of continuous racing, success overseas in Asia as well as countless wins at home. We don’t get to every podium or memories of every high or low but this is a well rounded summary of an incredible career so far and Ken Smith has no plans to hang up the helmet just yet. The Motorsport Brief | a champion and one in the making
Rally QLD winner Harry Bates and rookie Jackson Long join us for this edition of the shortcast fresh from the opening round of the EROAD Australian Championship. Long is part of the expanded two car Pedder’s squad and despite a scary diff issue late on Sunday he really impressed! How Jackson is adjusting his pace notes with the help of his codriver (his Dad) because of the faster speeds of his new ride, the R5 spec Skoda Fabia. And the SIM time that’s helped him adapt so quickly. It’s way better than the old arcade games. Bate’s was in good form on the stages around Gympie no matter what road position he was in. That ‘grove’ he and Coral Taylor found early in the event was great for confidence and they just kept building. Harry is now gearing up for Rally Portugal. How an opportunity to compete in the ultra competitive Rally 2 class came about. Plus the words of motivation from Kiwi legend Greg Murphy at the end of the WRC event in New Zealand in 2022 that really sank in. Rusty is battling the early onset of a cold here but we’ve tuned him up and pulled together a couple of cool rally chats. Head to the stage start and get into it! James Courtney | Part 2 - Schumacher the first on scene & selling Cocho’s place
The vivid memories of driving the V10 Jaguar Formula One car at Monza and a frightening crash at Ascari that wasn’t his fault. How Michael Schumacher stopped to help, off the charts crash data and the injuries James suffered that would keep him out of the car for months. Taking a career detour and conquering Japan plus the little known Indycar option and a potential second chance at F1. Moving into Supercars and a moment at Darwin in 2005 that necessitated a switch to SBR when HRT had been the first option. Winning the title for DJR against a backdrop of financial hardship for the team at the time and how proud he is of the way his crew rallied to get it over the line. How a move into broadcasting almost happened before his recent stint at the Blanchard Racing team. Overcoming fears that date back to school to get his Real Estate Licence and selling one of the best homes on the Gold Coast that belonged to Tony Cochrane. Plus the potential driving career bookend with his good mate Charlie Schwerkolt. A big thanks to Martin Collins and the Taupo International Motorsport Park team for letting us record there and Supercars TV for giving us nearly two hours of JC’s time ahead of the first leg of the Kiwi double header. How sampling a kart at Lithgow started the journey and it clicked straight away. Borrowing chain oil from the late Jim Morton and how his generosity put JC on course for Europe. Living alone in Italy in his mid teens and the future F1 stars who tried to scare him at the Karting World Championships. Thinking he was at the end of the road until a chance catch-up with Neil Crompton opened the door to car racing. Alan Gow stumping up serious cash for a move into Formula Ford. Realizing the dangers of the game when a friend was killed in a crash at Oulton Park. The ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ moment with Marino Franchitti and why they didn’t tell his legendary brother Dario about it for years! Plus a candid conversation around ADHD and how James has learned to live with it. The Motorsport Brief | F1 The World’s Most Brutal Sport
That’s the title of a new book by respected writer Stewart Bell and he’s in the Garage studio to talk about it in a special bonus shortcast in our feed this week. Bell has been a regular in the Formula One paddock since the late 90’s covering it for print media, digital, social and television for Associated Press, Sky Sports UK, publications in Hong Kong, India, Top Gear, GQ & more. Gunter Steiner wrote the foreword for the book and he reminds us that the ‘brutality’ can mean many things. It’s a game with huge public interest now so there is no hiding when it comes to failure or things going wrong….it means immense pressure in all facets of the business. Sure for the drivers there’s huge physical forces that come from racing the fastest cars, there’s danger including reflections on the death of the great Ayrton Senna….not to mention the cutthroat politics, the grueling schedule as well as the demands on the team 24/7. While we can’t talk about every chapter in the book (that’s for you to enjoy) it does include quotes from everyone from Oscar Piastri to Alain Prost, and it leans heavily on Stewart’s impressive 20 year interview archive. The now-retired Daniel Ricciardo is a prominent feature. Bell was there during the anguish at McLaren and how he shaped Lando Norris' future (in a positive way). You can find more on Stewart here: https://www.penguin.com.au/authors/stewart-bell The book is published by Penguin & you can find it in all the usual places: https://www.penguin.com.au/books/formula-one-the-worlds-most-brutal-sport-9781761357916 Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know who you want to hear from on Rusty's Garage See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Motorsport Brief | Brad Johnson - from AFL to Motorsport
It was meant to be a shortcast but Rusty’s convo with AFL Hall of Famer Brad Johnson runs over 30 minutes and it’s a beauty! How the Bulldogs legend and his family have taken to motorsport as son Jack pursues a professional career behind the wheel. What it was like riding alongside his son in the Soutar Motorsport McLaren Artura GT4 at Phillip Island. The impression Jack made at the opening round of the series and the work they have put into an expensive sport as a family. Are there learnings from Brad’s time as a professional athlete? The commitment, the discipline he showed on the way to becoming a Bulldog’s games record holder and how it might apply to Jack. The little bits of sage advice from an Indycar star. And walking that tight rope of helping to guide your son to avoid the pitfalls while giving them freedom to grow and learn. Plus the Johnson love for F1 and where Jack would like to end up racing. The next stop for Jack is at the Bend in South Australia in early May. You can find out more here https://www.speedseries.com.au/ Special thanks to the Shannon’s Speed Series team and the Fox Sports AFL 360 show for allowing us to use a slice of a cool story as Jack took Brad for a hotlap. The Motorsport Brief | Tabitha Ambrose - racing with a famous surname
Granddaughter of a pioneer, daughter of a legend in Marcos Ambrose….how Tabitha is forging her own path. The racing bond with her Dad and why this relentless pursuit has to be fun, being the first in the family to pick up a trophy at Bathurst and how it all started. When Dad showed up at school in the US with a very cool car, racing in Formula Ford and why it’s so important at this stage of her journey and the secret Trans Am test. Plus the incredible inner strength she witnessed in her Dad’s serious but very private cancer battle and perhaps why it’s made her respect him even more. Tabitha is a switched on racer who is fiercely determined to carve her own career in motorsport and is immersing herself in every aspect of the business. The easy listening convo comes easily between these two. You’ll be impressed with the commitment and confidence for someone whose teenage year are barely in the rear view mirror. Enjoy! Kevin Magee | Part 2 - World class talent & world records
That first ride on a 500cc Grand Prix bike - Kevin Magee remembers it in visceral detail. Racing in Japan and the mark he made there on the way to what we now know as MotoGP. Racing for Kenny Robert’s Yamaha including a podium in Portugal. Finally adding his name to that prestigious list of Grand Prix winners on a memorable day in Spain. A frightening cool down lap crash in the late 80’s and the media mistakenly reporting his death at Laguna Seca! He would come back to win races in Superbikes but how tough it was to deal with the premature end of his GP career. And the remarkable story of helping a blind rider break a world record. This conversation leaves you in no doubt of Magee’s talent but like so many in this brutal sport the tradjectory can change suddenly. James Golding & Aaron Cameron | Part 2 - determined to prove SMSP was no fluke!
The grounded approach the team is taking that comes right from the top. How the relentless off-season work at BRT has filled them with confidence and a determination by the drivers to repay the faith as they say. Jimmy is making the most of his new surroundings and we look back on his Bathurst 2025 podium with the benefit of a bit of time to process it. A turning point for Aaron at Adelaide last year and how he rose to the occasion. Plus the wave of new supporters (all in BRT merch) that love the underdog story. And ‘Flying High’….Sky Diving indoors. Are either of them ready for a cameo in the next Point Break movie? This convo flies by. It’s like the three of them are at a BBQ and you’re within earshot. The Motorsport Brief - Meet The New Supercars Commentators! 🎙️
With Supercars gearing up for its second round alongside F1 at Albert Park we thought it was a good chance for you to get to know the sport’s new play-by-play commentators a little better. Chad Neylon, Matt Naulty and Richard Craill have each walked different roads to get to this point and have become good friends along the way. They’ll share the lead calling role throughout the season. Why they are proper car (and bike) fans, the hard yards they’ve done across multiple forms of Motorsport, the grassroots and PA commentary that helped shape them and some of the impressive jobs they’ve done internationally too. From a shared love of ‘The Simpsons’ to the classic bike in the Neylon family plus the scars on Craillsy’s hands from working on his first car (he still owns it and won’t part with it) as well as the King of Story telling - why Naulty also has a forklift driver’s license. Much has been written and said about the sport’s big broadcast changes this year. This chat isn’t about reigniting that…..quite the opposite. The boys are all acutely aware of the magnitude of this job opportunity and very respectful of the legends who came before them. Why Rusty thought a shortcast would be long enough for this one we’ll never know. This is a ripper pub style convo between four Motorsport mates.
