Venture Capital Crisis - Dan Gray - Ryan Research Podcast Ep. 29
I am joined to today by Dan Gray. He is the Research Lead at Odin, a platform for fund managers to start and run venture capital firms online, handling structuring, capital calls, fund administration, and SPVs. He’s been writing for a long time about the ins and outs of venture capital with a level of depth and critical thinking few can match. In our chat, we discussed the definition of venture capital as an asset class and its role in the political economy. We explore the history of how venture capital developed and if it is in a current crisis. We cover the shifting dynamics amongst GPs and LPs which alters normal venture capital behavior. This produces higher funding rounds, later rounds, and overcapitalization in aggregate. Not only does this distort the transition of startups into public markets but it also alters the front-end decision making process of what types of founders, startups, and sectors get invested in. Ultimately, this makes startups more brittle and venture capital, as an innovation engine, less productive to the overall economy. We further review different models of venture capital (a16z vs. Union Square Ventures), if novel technology requires different funding structures, the role of government in venture capital, and the Europe vs. US debate. This podcast is also available on all major podcast platforms. Please like, follow, and share Gray at his links below:Substack:https://substack.com/@credistickTwitter:https://x.com/credistickCompany Substack:https://blog.joinodin.com/Featured Essays:https://blog.joinodin.com/p/hitting-escape-velocityhttps://blog.joinodin.com/p/heavy-is-the-head-that-wears-theCompany:https://www.joinodin.com/-----Make sure to check out all my links as well:https://ryanresearch.substack.com/https://x.com/_PeterRyanhttps://www.ryanresearch.co/Support the show

Critiquing Left & Right - Tony of 1Dime (Tony Chamas) - Ryan Research Podcast Ep. 28
I’m joined today by Tony Chamas. He is an independent researcher and has an upcoming book titled “Freedom to Change Nothing: The Spectrum of Managed Democracy and What Makes the US Different” with Revol Press. He also hosts the YouTube channel, 1Dime as well as his podcast, 1Dime Radio. Notable videos include The Deficit Myth and China's Cultural Revolution: The Full Story (Documentary). He also recently launched a Substack where you can find more of his written content. In our chat, we discussed our shared desire to critique the left and right. Chamas comes at it from a leftist starting point and I come at it from a right wing starting point. We uncover various contradictions and insufficiencies that both the left and the right contain. We mostly stick to schools of thought in political economy. We touch on Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Friedrich List, and Henry C. Carey. We also cover the geographic case studies of early America, France, Russia, Britain, and China. Naturally, political economy begs the questions of politics, history, and philosophy. We go over the nature of the state, democratic process, oligarchic capture, idealism vs. historical materialism, and a sprinkle of Hegelianism. I found this conversation very constructive and I hope you do too. This podcast is also available on all major podcast platforms. Please like, follow, and share Chamas at his links below:Substack:https://substack.com/@tonyof1dimeYouTube (1Dime):https://www.youtube.com/@1DimeePodcast (1Dime Radio):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFQlxdYqyXXuxBkuodA7gfQTwitter:https://x.com/1DimeOfficialPatreon:https://www.patreon.com/cw/OneDimePlease also follow Ryan Research at these links:Substack:https://substack.com/@ryanresearchTwitter:https://x.com/_PeterRyanSupport the show

Is China's Growth Sustainable? - Lei Gong and Miquel Vila - Research Podcast Ep. 23
This podcast episode was originally a live Twitter Spaces held on July 19, 2025. This was a debate on the prompt: Is China's growth sustainable? Lei Gong (Twitter: gonglei89, commentator on China and economics) took the affirmative and Miquel Vila (Twitter: MiquelVilam, geopolitical analyst) took the negative. Peter Ryan (Twitter: _peterryan, host of the Ryan Research Podcast) acted as the moderator. The prompt will be our starting point but we will seek to provide nuanced understanding that goes beyond the simplicity of just this prompt. In particular, we question if nominal growth always correlates to real prosperity. Two, we question if a slowing of growth means something is going wrong or if the economy has just reached high levels of development from a low starting point. This will not be a discourse centered in polemics like Gordon Chang or Peter Zeihan nor saying China is 100 percent perfect. Expect topics like GDP measurements, trade wars, industrial policy, multipolarity, and demographics. Support the show

Post-MMT Economics - Clint Ballinger - Ryan Research Podcast #6
I'm joined by Clint Ballinger. He is the author of "1000 Castaways: Fundamentals of Economics". It compresses 10,000 years of economic development into several years and a society small enough to allow an illuminating overview, yet large enough to feature the institutions essential to modern economies. Centuries of economic thought are distilled for the reader to the essence of how the macroeconomy functions (and malfunctions). He began his interest in economic development in the very long run while at The University of Texas at Austin. While there he worked with the World's oldest accounting tokens (Mesopotamian, 8000-3500 BC) under Denise Schmandt-Besserat and researched the development of both State and credit-money with a special interest in the debt-deflation work of Irving Fisher. For his M.A. in Political Science at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill he focused on modern uneven economic development, and went on to specialize in the interpretation of global econometric data for his PhD in Geography at Cambridge University. In our chat, we discuss the complex schools of thought within economics. We start with Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) rising trend that is very useful for understanding how money really works. We then explore the history of how economics was formalized through classical to neoliberal. We then focus on early thinkers that talked about national political economy but were underdiscussed. Finally, we end on economic development case studies around the world.Follow Clint Ballinger on Twitter:https://twitter.com/clintballingerBuy his book "1000 Castaways":https://www.amazon.com/dp/0648390616Visit his website:https://clintballinger.com/You can watch to the video version of this podcast here:https://youtu.be/JOATfNC2ugQThe Ryan Research podcast explores economics, history, technology, business, geopolitics, and more.
