More Reports, More Insight: Unlocking the Power of ASAP

In this episode of the Portside Safety by Baldwin podcast, we explore why ASAP reporting is one of the most powerful and underused tools in aviation safety. The team discusses what low reporting really means, the barriers that prevent employees from speaking up, and how operators can build trust, simplify reporting, and turn insights into action. More reports don’t mean more problems; they mean better visibility into your operation.Contact Safety Chats Tweet us at @BaldwinAviationConnect on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/baldwin-aviation-safety-&-compliance/ Follow on Facebook @BaldwinSafety Email us at [email protected] more about Safety Management System’s at www.BaldwinSMS.com Thanks for listening and stay safe!

Exploring Multipliers in Safety Performance Monitoring

In this podcast episode, a continuation of the SPIs series from last week, the focus shifts to the concept of using multipliers for improved safety metric measurement. The host, Jason Starke, emphasizes the significance of utilizing rates as a more accurate way to monitor safety performance, accounting for operational variations. The key idea here is employing multipliers to transform decimal-based rates into whole numbers, simplifying data representation on graphs. The process involves dividing event numbers by operational quantities and then applying a chosen multiplier, leading to clearer and more comprehensible graphs. The episode concludes by highlighting the practical advantages of this approach in enhancing data visualization and decision-making.Contact Safety Chats Tweet us at @BaldwinAviationConnect on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/baldwin-aviation-safety-&-compliance/ Follow on Facebook @BaldwinSafety Email us at [email protected] more about Safety Management System’s at www.BaldwinSMS.com Thanks for listening and stay safe!

Maximizing Output, Minimizing Risks: Unraveling the Dynamics of Systems

In this episode, we explore the theory of constraints and its application to our work in identifying failures or potential failures in systems. The theory of constraints suggests that the total output of a system is limited by its most constraining element.  We apply this concept to various systems, such as flight departments, airlines, and maintenance departments, where constraints and capacities come into play. In technical systems like assembly lines, it's easier to optimize and adapt to constraints. However, in social systems involving human elements, adapting to constraints can lead to potential problems. We discuss the five focusing steps of constraint theory:Decide how to exploit the system's constraints: Optimize the output of the constrained element within the constraints of human performance and other relevant factors.Subordinate everything else to the above decision: Adjust other elements within the system to align with the capacity of the constrained element, even if it means reducing output or adapting to the limitations - with Jason's asterisks "within human performance limitations."Elevate the system's constraints: Increase the capacity of the constrained element by adding resources, such as hiring more personnel or utilizing external sources. If the previous steps have resulted in a constraint being resolved, go back to step one: Continuously reassess the system and identify new constraints that may have emerged as a result of resolving previous constraints. Join us as we explore these concepts and strive to improve our understanding of systems and safety management. Ripple Effect: Consequences to the System

Organizations tend to react really quickly when something goes wrong in their systems. They jump to find a solution without taking the time to fully understand how the system works. This can lead to too many rules and regulations in the work environment, making things overly complicated.Dr. Jason Starke shares interesting examples of how this kind of knee-jerk reaction caused even more problems in flight operations. It's important to pay attention and learn from these mistakes. By actively listening and thinking about these examples, we can gain valuable insights and avoid making the same errors. FBOs & Interface Management

Interface management is the process of effectively managing and understanding the interactions and connections between different entities or systems to mitigate risks and ensure smooth operations. For flight operations and FBOs (Fixed Base Operators), certain events or circumstances within an FBO can lead to risks or issues that may affect flight operations. By managing this interface effectively, you aim to minimize the risks associated with FBO operations, ensuring that any potential issues or consequences are addressed before they impact flight operations. This podcast emphasizes the importance of communication, coordination, and risk assessment between your organization and the FBO to maintain safety and mitigate any negative impacts on flight operations.Contact Safety Chats Tweet us at @BaldwinAviationConnect on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/baldwin-aviation-safety-&-compliance/ Follow on Facebook @BaldwinSafety Email us at [email protected] more about Safety Management System’s at www.BaldwinSMS.com Thanks for listening and stay safe!

    Normalization of Deviance

This week we discuss how little events lead up to big events. Specifically, as we go through the work day, we may minimally adjust and alter what we're doing. Each little change is a step down the path of deviance. The further we go, the more an action is normalized. As we continue on this course and away from procedures and policies, we are normalizing our deviant behavior. Check out how this is related to the NPRM. It's No Fantasy, There Are Culture Islands

Why is communicating in the workplace sometimes a challenge?  If you’re trying to convey information to a team or to a larger group of employees, it may be difficult because of micro cultures within your organization. In this episode, Jason Starke talks about relating to employees that may be on a “cultural island” defined more by similar jobs, locations, responsibilities, or other characteristics. There are ways to find commonality among the islands, communicate effectively, and create safety advocates.  Want to discuss the episode?
