Wavelength Music Special: The Politico Pourri
IntroductionPeople of my generation are increasingly horrified at how quickly a stable, postwar, rules-based order has been changed into something that looks rather like anarchy. Here in Australia, political choices are worryingly limited and uninspiring; America at this time appears hardly to be working on any level at all, and certainly not politically; Russia has become a dangerous dictatorship, where journalists are routinely done away with for questioning official policy. Elsewhere, AI and social media permit politicians, if they wish, to essentially make up their own truth on the run. Many do and objective, independent reporting of correctly sourced & verified facts is becoming a thing of the past. But hold on a minute. Let's not forget that since the late 1950s, musicians and composers have been writing songs warning about this deteriorating situation. Now, Wavelength's Politico Pourri brings them all together. Views expressed in this program, which includes adult content & language, are those of the producer and artists alone and reflect no formal Sapphire FM position.Playlist(00.00.10) Intro (00.03.12) Buffy Sainte-Marie/The Big Ones Get Away (00.06.50) Billy Bragg/Red To Blue (00.10.05) Bobi Wine/Time Bomb Corruption (00.14.27) Blaze Foley/Election Day 00.17.00) Fun Boy Three & The Specials/The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum (00.19.45) Peter Gabriel/Biko (00.26.04) Joni Mitchell/The Fiddle And The Drum (00.30.21) Parody Project/Confounds The Science (00.33.17) The 'SS-Musikzug' of the SS Standarte 42 & Choir/Die Fahne Hoch (Horst Wessel Drinking Song, with voice inserts from D Trump & A Hitler) (00.36.41) Sacha Baron Cohen (as Ali G)/Donald Trump Interview (00.38.21) Noam Chomsky/On Trump & Republican Party Directions(from Democracy Now) (00.41.29) Fiona Apple/Tiny Hands (00.45.33) Billy Bragg/Full English Brexit (00.49.29) Randy Newman/Putin (00.53.06) Noam Chomsky/On Russian Election Interference (from Democracy Now) (00.55.04) David Johansen/Sinking Ship(01.03.34) Boomtown Rats/Banana Republic (01.06.54) Fascinating Aïda/So Sorry, Scotland (01.10.52) Lindisfarne/Bring Down The Government (01.12.17) Eddy Kenzo/Mbakooye (I'm Fed Up With Them - in support of Uganda's Bobi Wine) (01.17.57) Charlie Chaplin & Hans Zimmer/The Barber's Speech from The Great Dictator (01.21.47) Billy Bragg/Scousers Never Buy The Sun (01.25.21) Renft/Pronounce The Prohibition (Stasi Officer, Ruth Oelschlägel, informing the band that they "no longer existed") (01.25.54) Buffy Sainte-Marie/Look At The Facts (01.28.02) Tim Wilson/But I Could Be Wrong (01.33.16) Pikkardiyska Tertsia/Lament (for those who died in the Maidan in Kiev, Feb 20, 2014) (01.37.05) Okean Elzy/Hе Tвоя Bойна (Not Your War) (01.41.25) Flanagan & Allen/Who Do You Think You Are Kidding, Mr Hitler (01.42.49) Dame Vera Lynn/We'll Meet Again (01.45.45) Muse/Ruled By Secrecy (01.50.25) Takun J/They Lie To Us (01.54.52) Pussy Riot/Mother Of God, Get Rid Of Putin (01.56.42) Neil Young/Flags Of Freedom (02.00.24) Roger Waters, on war (from his address to the UNSC, Feb 17, 2025) (02.01.54) Pink Floyd/The Postwar Dream (02.04.23) Jimmy Nail/Big River (02.10.17) Chumbawamba/In Memoriam, Margaret Thatcher (02.19.58) Tom Ballard & The Tonightly Crew/Do Your Fucking Job (02.21.19) Scott Morrison/That's Not My JobIncidental music: Thunderclap Newman/Something In The Air; Lee 'Scratch' Perry/I Am A Psychiatrist [email protected]

They follow a very similar format (album tracks, new music, landmarks and covers) and I'm uploading them as often as possible. Look for Wavelength World Of Music programs in the title bars. I do hope you enjoy this selection. Wavelength Music Documentary: Remembering Kathleen Ferrier
Kathleen Ferrier - A Tribute October 8 marks the anniversary of the death of the great English contralto singer, Kathleen Ferrier, in 1953.She achieved an international reputation as a stage, concert and recording artist, with a repertoire extending from folksong and popular ballads to the classical works of Bach, Brahms, Mahler and Elgar. Her death from cancer, at the height of her fame, was a profound shock to the musical world and particularly to the general public, which was kept in ignorance of the nature of her illness until after her death. This tribute program includes reflections from Rob Paul, some of Ferrier's best known recordings, and Matthew Parris's program on Ferrier for the BBC series Great Lives.Playlist(00.00.00) Introduction (00.00.33) Kathleen Ferrier/Blow The Wind Southerly (00.03.28) Matthew Parris in discussion with Sue MacGregor and Christopher Fifield (BBC Radio 4 'Great Lives') (00.30.19) Introduction & Kathleen Ferrier in the (00.31.49) full male part from Gluck's Orfeo Ed [email protected]

Wavelength Music Documentary: Éire - An Audio Portrait, Pt 1
IntroductionSimply put, Irish music and spoken word are incomparable. Music and speech weave together into textures both refreshingly abrasive and silky smooth with an energy which, for Irish people, is like the air they breathe.Textures to beguile you, make you laugh and always to charm you. Sometimes, they will confront you.Intentionally impressionistic in style, this program seeks to feel these qualities rather than narrate them. It naturally contains a lot of folk music but it’s not all traditional - we’ll hear classical, progressive and jazz performances, and plenty of rock and instrumental music too. It's a mark of the greatness of Irish music that despite 700 years of authoritarian and often brutal British repression, a great Irish singer can still sing an English song as willingly and evocatively as Luke Kelly sings The Unquiet Grave.Special Thanks: Anna Clark-Doyle, English voiceovers; Rory Cosgrave, Irish voiceovers, research; Stephanie Batt, for taking me to so many folk music sessions in 1960s Dublin; Pat Collins, director of Song Of Granite; my Dad, an Irishman, who planted the seeds when I was 12 by giving me the The Clancy Brothers' & Tommy Makem's Hearty & Hellish.PlaylistIntroduction: Seóirse Bodley/1st Movement, Symphony#2, (I Have Loved The Lands Of Ireland, BBC Phil Orch, cond. Wavelength Music Special: Folk Music
IntroductionThis program showcases the English-speaking folk music I've experienced in my lifetime. When I was a young man in England, the '60s UK folk resurgence was in full swing. My friends and I greatly enjoyed the 400 year old 'Blue Boar' pub, just outside Newbury on the Berkshire Downs. Oliver Cromwell stayed there the night before the first Battle of Newbury in the English Civil War, on September 19th/20th, 1643. There's a Civil War song from Martyn Wyndham-Read in the second hour of this program. On Friday and Saturday nights, we'd gather there and sing along with local folk singers Brian Howe and Mike Campbell-Cole; and on Sunday evenings, we'd head to the Waggon & Horses, in Newbury, for the weekly Folk Club session. My lifelong love of folk music was born in these experiences, and it's a pleasure to share with you here the songs I've been fortunate to acquire over many years.PlaylistIntroduction (01.30) Paul Brady/Arthur McBride (check Tiernan McBride's 1977 film, Youtube) (08.14) Kate Wolf/September Song (12.15) Waterson Carthy/Stars In My Crown (15.13) Bob Dylan/Girl From The North Country (18.10) Declan Affley/Carrickfergus (21.56) James Fagan & Nancy Kerr/Banks Of The Condamine (25.33) Kathryn Tickell/Lads Of Alnwick (31.22) Ewan MacColl/Shoals Of Herring (from 'The Radio Ballads') (35.11) Joan Baez/Joe Hill (live, Woodstock, 1969) (37.46) Project Smok/Woodlands Drive_Arisaig (recorded for BBC Radio Scotland, Sept 2020) (42.16) Ian & Sylvia (Tyson)/Four Strong Winds (live, CBC TV, 1986) (46.43) Richard Fariña/Birmingham Sunday (50.41) Luke Kelly/The Rising Of The Moon (53.49) The Wilson Family/The Plains Of Waterloo (56.49) Christine Wheeler/When The Children Come Home (01.02.05) Gordon Lightfoot/Early Morning Rain (01.05.15) Karine Polwart/Follow The Heron (01.08.13) Martyn Wyndham-Read/When The King Comes Home (01.11.00) Joe Hutton/Scottish Air (01.13.00) Dave de Hugard/Across The Western Plains (01.17.00) Steeleye Span/Thomas The Rhymer (01.20.00) The Fagans/Dark As The Dungeon (01.25.00) The Dubliners/Dublin In The Rare Ould Times (01.32.49) Alistair Hulett/He Fades Away (live, Blue Mntns Music Festival) (01.37.05) Shirley Collins/The Unquiet Grave (01.40.25) The Chieftains/Brian Boru's March (01.43.33) Liam Clancy & Tommy Makem/October Winds (01.46.02) Nic Jones/Ten Thousand Miles (John Peel [session #7], July 8, 1976) (01.49.15) Dolores Keane/My Own Dear Galway Bay (01.52.18) Incredible String Band/Mercy I Cry, City (01.54.55) The Albion Band/The Green Mist (vocals, Cathy Lesurf) (02.02.12) Martyn Wyndham-Read/In Memory Of Bill (live, New Ivanhoe Hotel, Blackheath, March 3, 2011) (02.06.09) Ramblin' Jack Elliott/Hard Travellin' (Live, Tris Elies Winebar, Katoomba, March 26, 1999) (02.10.30) American Civil War Medley (from Ken Burns's 'The Civil War'): Shelby Foote/Intro - John Hartford/Lorena - Kathy Mattea/The Vacant Chair - Ken Burns/Commentary Jay Ungar/Ashokan Farewell (02.20.05) Dave Cohen/I Like To Sleep Late In The Morning (02.22.22) Phil Ochs/There But For Fortune (02.24.55) Eva Cassidy/Tall Trees In Georgia (02.28.30) Dave Loggins/Wonderin' As The Days Go By (02.32.15) Documentary - Collits's Inn, Hartley: A conversation with (2012) owner, Col MacDonald, with music from The Dubliners (Fields Of Athenry), Dave de Hugard (Across The Western Plains), Paragon Café (Currency Lass) & Project Smok (Mountain Road); poetry read by Peter O'Shaughnessy (Dame Mary Gilmour's 'Old Botany Bay') (03.01.25) AL 'Bert' Lloyd/The Cocky From [email protected]
