Robina Lajin: working on the identity building for Assyrian youth in the diaspora
Robina Lajin recently visited Australia to participate in the Policy Summit on the Future of the Nineveh Plains, held at Parliament House in Canberra. As Vice President of the Etuti Institute, a non-profit organisation based in the United States, she joined a panel of experts to discuss the future of the Nineveh Plains and the challenges facing the Assyrian people. In an interview with SBS Assyrian, Ms Lajin spoke about the work of the Etuti Institute, her academic research, and her thesis on the role and aspirations of Assyrian youth in preserving their identity and shaping their community's future.

Australian leaders support the Nineveh Plains initiative at the Canberra Policy Summit
The Assyrian National Council – Australia (ANCA), proudly hosted the Policy Summit on the Future of the Nineveh Plains at Parliament House, Canberra, on Assyria Day, Wednesday, 1 July 2026. The Summit was honoured by the attendance of the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. Anthony Albanese MP, who officially opened the event, together with Senator the Hon. Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and the Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy, who hosted the Summit at Parliament House. One of the principal outcomes of the Summit was the presentation of the Canberra Declaration on the Future and Protection of the Nineveh Plains. President of the ANC, Mr Hermiz Shahen spoke to SBS Assyrian about the significance of this summit.

"Language is an element of existence"
"Our Language is an Element of Our Existence" is the theme of a lecture to be held on 25 June, organised by the Assyrian Centre and presented by Adel Dano and Emil Shiba. The lecture will focus on two important issues: strengthening and promoting the Assyrian language among younger generations, and exploring ways for Assyrian writers to better distribute and promote their work within the community. Speaking to SBS Assyrian, Nimrod Slewa from the Athra Centre emphasised the vital role of language in preserving Assyrian identity, culture and heritage, highlighting the responsibility of the community to ensure its transmission to future generations.

Assyrian Leaders, Diplomats and Politicians to Gather for Nineveh Plains Summit in Canberra
The Assyrian National Council of Australia (ANCA) is organising a Policy Summit on the future of the Nineveh Plains, to be held on 1 July 2026. The summit will take place at the Australian Parliament House in Canberra. ANCA President Hermiz Shahin told SBS Assyrian that numerous ambassadors, diplomats, and politicians have been invited to attend the event. He also stated that a number of Assyrian political parties and community organizations will participate in this one-day summit to discuss the future of the Nineveh Plains and issues of importance to the Assyrian people.

Oliver Slewa explains the importance of establishing both a Power of Attorney and a Guardianship appointment. These legal arrangements are essential for managing a person's financial, legal, and health matters. Mr Slewa notes that while a person may appoint someone as their attorney while they still have full mental capacity, the authority granted under an Enduring Power of Attorney generally takes effect only when they are no longer able to manage their own affairs due to a loss of mental capacity.

Ashurbanipal Library awards three writers for their contribution to Assyrian Literature
The Assyrian Australian Association and the Ashurbanipal Library honoured three Assyrian writers in recognition of their valuable contributions to Assyrian literature and the preservation of the Assyrian language. Adam Homeh, Youel Hawil, and Agnes Nisan received awards and expressed their gratitude to the Ashurbanipal Library for its initiative in acknowledging and celebrating their efforts. They noted that such recognition encourages the continued preservation, development, and sustainability of Assyrian literary works for future generations.
