Welcome to Sidebar: a Law School Podcast with LegallyAmrutha. We're talking about all things admissions, law school, and lawyering. The legal world is one of the most gatekept. There are some real and known barriers (the bar). But most are artificial: applying to law school, paying for it, doing well once you're there. What to do next? How to survive in law — lead a life you are proud of. What if law is your calling? What if it's just a job? The questions get bigger. We'll think it through together. This is a limited series podcast I've been dreaming of for 3 years. Let's sidebar.

Law School Pro Bono, Clinics, & Externships

Season Three Episode Four is co-hosted by Neha, a lovely friend and two-time clinic student. This Episode covers three different ways you can get practical experience as a law student: pro bono organizations, clinics, and externships. Law schools (and state bars) require both experiential credits and pro bono work. Regardless of the mandatory aspect of these experiences, many of us find them to be the most meaningful as well. They gets us out of the classroom and out in the world providing service.

Law Review and Publishing Your Article

Season Three, Episode Three discusses legal scholarship in two parts. First, we talk about journals. In law school, journals are not the classic moleskin notebooks made for self-reflection. Journals are student-run volumes of scholarship—termed "law review." Every law school has multiple law reviews, with the Law Review, being the sought-after catch-all journal. You apply to journal at some point in the latter half of 1L. You actually join journal at the start of 2L as an Executive Editor (AE) and your job is to Bluebook your assigned footnotes in three stages: source hunt, first edit, second edit. If you want to stay on journal your third year, you can either be on board performing more of a managerial role. Or, you can be a Senior Editor (SE) where your primary responsibility remains Bluebooking. Second, we talk about publishing your own article! I highly recommend supervision under a professor and seeking feedback on your work. Next, make a student Scholastica account to search and submit to journals. Finally, consider conferences, paper awards, and other opportunities to showcase your work. I hope this was helpful! Leave your questions in the comments :)

How to Make Money in Law School

Season Three, Episode Two discusses how to make money in law school. Inclusive of my most creative side quests. This episode begins by talking about common student jobs. Then, it discusses what you can do in the (more limited) 1L-verse. By summer, there are many opportunities for paid positions. Finally, there are a decent number of semester-long opportunities your 2L and 3L. This includes paid student jobs at your law school. You can have a job in law school. Its not going to fund your tuition but may help pay your rent and groceries. You just have to know where to look—and I'm here to help.

Big Law Recruiting: A Conversation with 1L Bianca on the 2026 Cycle

Happy Tuesday! I’m so excited to welcome Bianca from AmplifyAcademy to this week’s episode. We’ve already covered all things talking Big Law. But as anyone in this world knows, this year’s 1Ls had a uniquely wonky cycle. Many wrapped up 2L summer (and even post-grad) recruiting before they’d even applied to 1L summer jobs. In Episode 5, and the wrap to our big law recruiting segment, Bianca shares her experience and advice for navigating it all. Keep up with Bianca: https://www.tiktok.com/@amplifyacademyllc

Let’s take a break from big law recruiting and answer some of the law school admissions questions I get most often.First (0:20): what are the major components of a law school application?Next (4:01): should you make the switch to law school—and how do you stand out in the application process? This question came from a STEM student, but the answer is useful for anyone thinking about a career pivot. Then (16:12): how do you show your academic potential and your community-building capacity… through essays? For answers to the above (and a few other questions), I hope this episode is helpful.
