    Ep 16: SDC MLK

GOP lawmaker Kevin McCarthy tweeted: “Critical race theory goes against everything Martin Luther King Jr. has taught us.” In Florida’s STOP WOKE ACT in 2021, schools and businesses are prohibited from discussing race and racism in a way that white people don’t like. Billionaire Bill Ackman was leading the charge to have Claudine Gay ousted as the President of Harvard University saying: that DEI initiatives are racist & that he is worried about reverse racism. In response, MLK’s daughter has weighed in on some lawmaker’s OPINIONS that project their own ideas and beliefs saying that her dad’s words  are consistently misconstrued.  She tweeted: “My father’s dream and work included eradicating racism, not ignoring it” After researching the topic of the historic holiday of Martin Luther King’s birth, I could not find any evidence of any actual celebration or an act of homage by white people SOLEY.  Articles were written, opinions on podcasts given, etc., but nothing substantial from a group of whites in celebration of him. This week is all about white people’s contribution OR Lack thereof as it relates to this holiday & our thoughts on the topic.

EP 15 Part 3 : Racism in the Seattle School Department

Part 3: Racism is everywhere. Despite some people’s desire to act as if it doesn’t exist or it’s over (both ridiculous claims) it is alive and thriving in almost every facet of our lives.  Part 2 of this podcast episode explores the racism that exists in the school system-specifically in Seattle, Washington where James’ homie, Christina, refused to go along to get along for the sake of her black son.  Her story is a real testimony to the strength & tenacity of a mom defending her son against the misguided & complacent system in place in Seattle, Washington. This is one you don’t want to miss yall! We are breaking it allllll the way down & encouraging others to get into GOOD TROUBLE for fair and equitable rights and behaviors. We have to make that the standard for our future generations for any sustainable change to occur. We have to lead by example & challenge ourselves to see the world the way it truly is….not the way we want it to be!

    EP 12 SDC Ethnic Foods

This episode is yum yum good because we’re talking food! Soul food, Mexican food, Irish food, Indian food. EP 10 SDC Stereotypes

We all do it…make assumptions about who people are and how they behave based on preconceived assumptions or STEREOTYPES.  We’re doing something a little different this week by collaborating with Marcus Adams & Barron Shorte from Parking Level 3 on the topic of stereotypes. This is a really good one y’all-with tons of theories getting debunked, strong opinions & hilarious references to the “WHITE PASS.”  You gotta listen & laugh with us to find out what that reference is and maybe, juuuust maybe you’ll learn as we did- that your experience with a group or race of people is not the only experience there is.  Let’s all learn & grow together & keep in mind, it’s only skin deep!

  17. 9

EP 9 SDC Black and Minority Trump Supporters

This week we are doing a deep dive into Trump’s appeal within the POC and People of the Global Majority community.  How are these marginalized groups swayed by President Trump and his disingenuous rhetoric?  What is the WIN for them as individuals and within the often discriminated group they belong to?  Let’s try to put our GRACE hats on and have a discussion about 45 and what appeals to these folks.

    EP 8 SDC Juneteenth 2023

We OUTSIIIIIIDE yall! Welcome to another episode of Skin Deep Conversations with Producer James and kittie KaBoom. We decided to take a field trip for the “BLACKEST” holiday there is in this country-JUNETEENTH! We went to Leimert Park in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles and it was LITTY as expected. We saw, we ate, and we asked questions. We were able to get some great interviews from black people about the significance of Juneteenth and some comedic relief about cultural “insider stuff” that gave James tons of insight and provided kittie with some much needed melanin re-up. Join us as we share what our day was like and how we can ALL appreciate the message and the meaning behind the holiday. MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT OUR VISUAL REPLAY OF JUNETEENTH AT LEIMERT PARK on our youtube channel and IG page, and don’t forget to follow and subscribe to SKIN DEEP CONVERSATIONS where you listen to your podcasts.

    EP 7 SDC Passing

This week James and kittie explore what living in shrouded secrecy looks like as it relates to your skin color-LITERALLY! White people disguising themselves as black and even more prevalently, Black people “passing” as white has always been a “thing.” As more and more people are being outed and/or are coming clean, the world wants to know WHY. This episode explores the motivation, the process and the repercussions behind this huge decision.

  20. 6

EP 6 SDC TikTok & HBCU

These days, almost everyone has at least one social media account. Despite some creatives being able to protect their art, their spoken word, their songs/singing, and dance routines when they post, TikTok has specifically been under fire for not only allowing white people to repost black people's art (primarily dances) as their own but have even gone as far as to delete the original black creative's accounts altogether.  Mostly, teenagers, many white kids have become millionaires with endorsement deals, and reality shows that allow them to live in a house together and post stolen content. In contrast, black kids are not given any credit for their original dances and are sometimes penalized for violations where their white counterparts are rewarded.

  21. 5

    EP 5 SDC Fat Shaming

EP 5. Fat Shaming Hosts Producer James, and kittie KaBoom unpack the selective outrage of society as it relates to fat/big people, but with the specific focus on how people shame and bully fat/big people of color; especially black people. The primary focus is the performer, Lizzo, but the discussion includes many examples of how white people that are fat receive a very different reception than their black counterparts. LET’S GET INTO IT!

  22. 4

EP 2 SDC The Joys of Cannabis

EP 2. The Joys of Cannabis This episode has two guests; Syeeda, Manager at Budega in North Hollywood, CA and Lauren, Co-owner of The Artist Tree in West Hollywood, CA. Both of these brick and mortar dispensaries are flourishing in their own right, but the struggles to get licensed, marketing, follow strict guidelines etc. are very different for these women as Lauren is white and Syeeda is black. Especially with the long history of disproportionate arrests as it relates to cannabis, we are discussing what being a woman, as well as a woman of color in a male dominated industry that was once an illegal industry looks like LET’S GET INTO IT!

  25. 1

    EP 1 SDC Religion

What does the discussion sound like when they stop being polite and start unpacking what it means to have faith, and believe in God, The Universe, Allah, Buddah OR having no belief at all… LET’S GET INTO IT!
