This episode of The Kat In The Trap takes music in a different direction, introducing Vancouver, BC all-star DJ/producers Seb C West Coast, and Jaemo & Tess, with some new remixes heating up the airwaves this summer. I wanted to start out with our normal hip-hop feel, using some records you might be familiar with, before sliding into Lee Ross and Black V Neck—something you might hear in a proper house set or on Groove Directive on Dizz Global Radio. One of my favorite things to do is blend EDM with trap music and hip-hop, while occasionally throwing in some R&B. We even switched up the cover this time to give Kat a different look for the series—but it's the same bangers representing the tattooed goddess herself. Prior moving to Seattle in the summer of 2023, I created a new mixtape series called Alki Sessions, taking a deep dive into Progressive House, Organic House, and Melodic House & Techno. After a successful debut at Vice Seattle, the following week I started making my move to Portland. Wednesdays and Thursdays were my days off during my summer job at Enterprise, so a visit to Open Decks at House Wednesdays with Shay Baca was definitely in order. Before the main House Wednesday lineup starts, Open Decks are held for the first two hours, and occasionally I get to do a set. In Season Two, I'll bring you a video set I did back in February—I'm thinking about uploading the video itself or extracting the audio. I like open decks because it allows me to experiment with music—either tracks that have worked well in previous sets or something new I’d like to test live. During the summer of 2025, while working a full-time job at Enterprise at SeaTac, I still kept my ear to the ground with music. It was the first job in 22 years that didn't involve a DJ booth. I had a 60-to-90-minute commute to work via bus, light rail, or the West Seattle ferry, and I always listened to music en route. That Friday-to-Tuesday schedule mirrors Dizz Global Radio now, and on my days off, I'd work on the few mixes I put out. It's been a few months since I did a live set in Portland, but a few weeks ago, I stepped out of the studio and behind the decks for Bounce Thursdays at Que Dicee. Shoutout to Logic and the crew! As Season One comes to a close on 206 Sessions, I leave you with a special Open Decks episode at Mira in Bellevue. I've been to a few shows there with my homies Fame Sounds and DJ Amp in the lineup, and it's a great venue. Back in February of 2025, they had an open decks night and I opted to go up first. I made sure to record my set. One of the most important things about an open decks session is giving tracks a try to see how they work in a live setting or just getting a feel for the room. Mixtape Monday is my longest running mixshow in the #new52mixshow universe. Much like Sunday Funday, it started as a mixtape mini-series in 2016, and I restarted the series in 2017 and continued from there. Sunday Vibes was once called "Sunday Funday," a mixtape mini-series I started in 2016 after my first mixtape ever, called Summer Sampler. In 2017, I did 12 episodes, and the series reflected my Sunday nights during my residency at Dancers Showclub and Club Rio Indy. Sunday for most people is the beginning of the week and the end of the weekend, so during my rebrand under the #new52mixshow in 2018, I changed the name to Sunday Vibes. This mix is a little different from the hype of the weekend — it's more where I get to focus on R&B and other genres that center around it. This week makes the 100th episode (alongside The 765 Podcast) with an hour-long episode of eclectic feels and some classics you may recognize. I have to give a shoutout to my mentor and longtime friend DJ Carlos Mayberry, aka Mixmaster88. He introduced me to online radio in 2017, and from 2017 to 2020 I was on 4 different mixshows on Flash 107.6 FM Columbus. During this time, I was rebranding my DJ career, which is where the #new52mixshow concept was born. Much like DC Comics rebranded their major characters and founding members of the Justice League, I did the same thing with my mixshows. The 765 Podcast was a spin-off of Mixmaster88's 317 Mixshow, which aired on Saturdays on Flash 107.6 FM. With Sunday Vibes and Mixtape Monday already in rotation, I wanted a mixshow that showcased my weekend sets at my residency at Dancers Showclub. This weekend's 100th episode is very special to me, reminding me of what it took to get here. I have 21 tracks and 64 minutes of music that I would still play if I were in the industry. We call Technoverse "Technoverse" for a reason. When I think of techno, I think of peak, driving, hypnotic beats, and sometimes it's more than that. Techno is a "universe" in itself, and there are many ways to look at that. This is probably the most eclectic episode of Technoverse yet, but this week we have music from Amryta member Zteca, who will be direct support for Lilly Palmer this weekend at 45 East (who also makes an appearance on this mixshow), and Rebūke, who will be performing at Realm PDX. At first I had a set planned from 2020, but I let my mind scroll through my crates and let the grooves and melodies guide me. There aren't many tracks on this episode (18), but it's a slow burn with 77 minutes of melodic grooves, meant to be enjoyed the way house music should be. Some of these are tracks I've played over the years, and some I've never played, but they felt right for the mix. House music has always been one of my first loves when it comes to electronic music, right behind disco. This week's episode is pretty simple — a deep dive into some aggressive hip hop for the first couple of tracks, then a mellow ending. One key component to playing music is knowing when to put your foot on the gas, like a race car, and knowing when to take your foot off the pedal. Every set or mix has an ebb and flow to it — usually the more hype music gets the crowd going and throwing money, and then a few tracks even out the set, one of my signature moves back in the day. I typically tend to rinse tracks in this series, but with various remixes. This episode of The Kat In The Trap, we infuse a little tech house at the beginning and end. In my DJ days at the strip club, I would combine EDM with trap music, which created an energetic vibe for the crowd and entertainers on stage. It's been a long while since I've done an episode of Transcension and about six months since I've done a trance set, but the recipe is still the same. A solid foundation of organic and progressive house, sometimes a "dash" of techno, and a wonderful yet uplifting arc into trance. Believe it or not, most people do not realize that I love techno. I have yet to play a techno show, but this series on Dizz Global Radio represents the respect I have for the genre.
