AI Voice Clones Are Clearer Than Humans, and Satellites Are Transforming Fishing
AI Voice Cloning; Clearer Speech, Growing RisksNew research reveals that AI-generated voice clones can be up to 20% more intelligible than real human speech in noisy environments. While this could revolutionise public announcements, accessibility, and communication, it also raises serious concerns. Experts warn that cloned voices can sound more authoritative and trustworthy, making them a powerful tool not just for innovation, but also for scams and audio deepfakes that are increasingly hard to detect.Space Tech Meets the Sea; AI Tools for Sustainable FishingA new generation of startups is using satellite Earth observation and AI to support fishing communities facing climate change, regulation, and economic pressure. By combining real-time ocean data with insights from fishers themselves, companies like Orbiventure are helping to track catches, protect marine ecosystems, and improve long-term coastal resilience, showing how space technology can deliver practical solutions on the ground. The programme is presented by Ania Lichtarowicz.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/somewhere-on-earth-the-global-tech-podcast--6924871/support.Production manager: Liz TuohyEditor: Ania Lichtarowicz Somewhere on Earth Productions UK Ltd. Driverless Taxis Are Here 🚕 No Humans, No Steering Wheel. And the Hidden Fibre Network Powering It All
Driverless Cars Take the WheelDriverless taxis are no longer a future concept, they’re already operating in cities worldwide, and even in Zagreb you can now book a ride with no driver at all. With the UK preparing for a rollout as early as September, the shift is accelerating fast. Backed by new laws and regulatory frameworks, the technology is moving from trials to real-world adoption. But safety remains the key question, as comparing autonomous systems to human drivers isn’t straightforward. The big issue now isn’t just capability it’s public trust. We were at the launch of the Institute for Driverless Transport to find out more. The Invisible Network Behind It AllBehind the rise of autonomous vehicles is a reality most people overlook: the internet doesn’t run on satellites, but on fibre optic cables carrying light across the globe. This physical infrastructure powers the real-time data needed for navigation, communication, and control. And it’s not being replaced, it’s evolving, with innovations like hollow-core fibre pushing speeds even further. As driverless tech scales, it’s this hidden network that will define performance. The future of mobility depends as much on glass as it does on code. The podcast is presented by Ania Lichtarowicz.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/somewhere-on-earth-the-global-tech-podcast--6924871/support.Production manager: Liz TuohyEditor: Ania Lichtarowicz Somewhere on Earth Productions UK Ltd. AI, Music & Accessibility: How Artificial Intelligence Is Changing Creativity and Communication
From streaming royalties to AI tools: how musicians are navigating a rapidly changing industryArtificial intelligence is reshaping the music industry, but not always in the ways people expect. Researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute have been speaking with musicians across several countries about life in the streaming era and how AI fits into their creative work. Many artists say they are using AI as a practical tool, for example to overcome writer’s block or experiment with new ideas, while still believing that human emotion and authenticity remain central to music. Using artificial intelligence to break communication barriers for deaf communitiesAI is also being used to tackle accessibility challenges. At Web Summit Qatar, the Polish company Migam showcased technology designed to translate spoken language into sign language in real time. The aim is to make digital platforms - from streaming services to video calls - more accessible for millions of deaf users around the world, demonstrating how AI could expand communication as well as creativity. The Dark Side of the Kill Switch: Inside 2025's Record-Breaking Internet Shutdowns
313 blackouts. 52 countries. One global crisis.Internet shutdowns are no longer just blunt nationwide blackouts. From Uganda to Iran, governments are now using sophisticated tools to cut off Starlink, exempt their own institutions, and silence critics—while ordinary citizens are left completely offline. In Iran, a blackout has now lasted 30 days, on track to become the longest complete internet shutdown ever recorded. So what can people actually do to fight back? The VPN paradox; why the UK wants to restrict teens from using a tool its own government relies on every single day.The UK government wants to restrict VPNs for teens, but it uses them itself. That's the paradox at the heart of a new investigation from TechRadar. The UK is consulting on "Growing Up in the Online World" – which could see consumer VPN apps face age-verification rules, making it harder for teenagers to bypass online checks. But here's the twist: multiple UK government departments and public bodies regularly purchase and use VPN services. Sam Woodhams, VPN Managing Editor at TechRadar has been investigating. AI, Surveillance & Migration: Inside Europe’s Tech-Driven Border Policies + The Rise of Renting Apps
Tech, AI and Europe’s migration debateDigital tools are now central to how migration is managed across Europe. From biometrics to automated decision-making, technology is shaping who can enter, stay, or be removed. A report by Access Now warns these systems risk reinforcing bias and reducing transparency - while officials argue they are essential for efficiency, security, and coordination. Why renting could replace owningA growing shift - especially among younger generations - is moving away from ownership towards access. Renting everyday items can be cheaper, more convenient, and reduce clutter at home. Now, a new app is making that easier - connecting people who need items with those who already have them, in a move that could also help cut waste and support more sustainable living. Great Tech Idea. Now What? Inside a Deep-Tech Pitch Night
From breakthrough tech to startup reality Great ideas are only the beginning. This episode explores what happens next - how deeptech founders try to turn scientific breakthroughs into real companies. We attended a pitch night at London Business School where startups were presenting their ideas to investors. Among them were Nanoloom, developing sustainable graphene-based fibres for textiles, and Auralytica, building chemical sensors that can detect food spoilage. But raising money isn’t easy. Research shows female founders still receive only around 2% of venture capital funding - despite strong evidence that women led businesses often perform as well as or better than male-led ones.So how do you get investors to believe in your idea? AI’s Hidden E-Waste Crisis and the Rise of CyberParent: The Growing Cost of Our Digital Lives
The AI Boom Is Fuelling a New Wave of E-WasteArtificial intelligence may feel invisible, but the hardware powering it is very real - and short-lived. As companies race to deploy powerful AI servers, turnover of specialised chips and equipment is accelerating. Yet major tech firms rarely disclose AI-specific hardware figures, making it difficult to track where outdated machines end up. With less than a quarter of global e-waste recycled, the expansion of AI infrastructure could quietly add to a growing waste crisis - an angle we’re reporting on for the first time. The Digiconomist, Alex de Vries-Gao, explains his latest research. Can AI Also Be Part of the Solution? Tackling Cyberbullying in Real TimeWhile AI raises environmental concerns, it’s also being deployed to solve urgent social challenges. With more than one in three young people globally reporting experiences of online bullying, according to UNICEF, the need for early intervention is clear. Serbian startup CyberParent says its AI-powered app can detect signs of cyberbullying on a child’s phone and alert parents in real time - aiming to stop harm before it escalates. Banking the Unbanked & Electrifying Ethiopia: How Tech Is Leapfrogging the Future
How Mobile Money and Open Tech Are Bringing 1.3 Billion People Into the Financial SystemTechnology isn’t just evolving - it’s rewriting the rules of entire economies. In this episode of Somewhere on Earth, we explore how mobile technology, open-source payments, and digital finance are helping to “bank the unbanked.” With around 1.3 billion adults still without access to a bank account, we look at how mobile money and open systems are leapfrogging traditional infrastructure and giving millions their first real access to savings, payments, and opportunity. Why Ethiopia’s Bold Ban on Petrol Cars Could Redefine Transport Across AfricaEthiopia has become the first nation to ban the import of petrol and diesel vehicles, pushing full speed into an electric future. From battery-swapping motorcycles to renewable-powered transport, Ethiopia is betting on clean tech to transform its economy and environment. We connect the dots between financial inclusion and electrification — and ask how emerging tech ecosystems are reshaping lives, cities, and nations. The programme was presented by Ania Lichtarowicz. Why the US Is Withdrawing From Internet Freedom Groups and What It Means for Your Digital Rights.
Trump and our Internet Freedoms – it’s not looking goodThe United States has pulled out of key international internet freedom organizations, calling them wasteful and ineffective — but digital rights experts say Americans should be concerned. In this episode, we break down why the US made the decision, what it means for online privacy and free expression, and how the shift could impact everyday internet users around the world. From surveillance to censorship, we explore what’s really at stake for the future of digital freedom.🤖 AI Swarms and the Future of DemocracyA new political threat is emerging online: AI swarms - vast networks of human-like artificial agents that can infiltrate social media, mimic real people, and influence opinion without detection. These aren’t simple bots. They use slang, join communities, post irregularly, and slowly persuade at scale.Researchers warn they could be used to destabilise elections, spread confusion, and push citizens toward disengagement rather than direct propaganda. We examine how real this danger is, how easy AI armies are to build, and what governments, platforms, and users can do to defend democracy in a world of synthetic voices. AI’s Hidden Environmental Cost and the Rise of the Smart Pill That Knows When You Take It
🌍 AI’s Carbon and Water FootprintArtificial intelligence feels invisible, but its infrastructure is massive. From data centres and specialist servers to cooling systems and power grids, AI is driving a surge in energy and water use around the world. Now research suggests global AI systems may already produce carbon emissions comparable to a city like New York, while the water required to run and cool them could exceed total global bottled water consumption. In this segment, we explore why big tech companies disclose so little about AI’s true footprint — and what that means for users, sustainability, and the future of digital growth. The Digiconomist Alex de Vries-Gao joins us on the show. 💊 The Smart Pill RevolutionOne of the biggest problems in healthcare isn’t new drugs - it’s getting people to take the ones they already have. In the US alone, around 50% of patients don’t follow prescriptions properly, costing the system more than $100 billion every year and contributing to tens of thousands of premature deaths. Now researchers have created a dissolvable electronic “smart pill” that can confirm when medication has actually been taken. It’s safe and biodegradable. We look at how ingestible technology could transform treatment, accountability, and patient care worldwide. The Communications Blackout in Iran: Network Data Show Near-Total Comms Shutdown
The latest on Iran: nationwide communications blackout deepensIranian authorities imposed an unprecedented communications blackout as protests spread nationwide. The internet monitoring group NetBlocks shows that connectivity remains at around one percent of normal levels, with mobile data, phone calls, text messages and fixed-line services all heavily disrupted. Digital rights groups say the scale of the shutdown goes far beyond previous internet blackouts used during unrest. Amir Rashidi, Director of Internet Security and Digital Rights at the NGO, the Miaan Group and Felicia Anthonio, Access Now’s #KeepItOn Global Campaign Manager explain how the shutdown is being enforced and what it means for people inside Iran. How AgriTech Is Cutting Food Waste: Tracking Produce from Farm to TableUp to 50% of fresh produce is lost before it ever reaches our plates - often because critical information disappears after harvest. In this episode we speak with Kacper Dach, Co-Founder of Agrocontracts, about how digital tracking, QR codes, and RFID technology are helping farmers and distributors trace produce from field to table. We explore how small data mistakes can lead to massive food waste, why agriculture needs better tech infrastructure, and how smarter supply chains can reduce losses, costs, and environmental impact worldwide. From triage algorithms that choose who gets evacuated first, to AI-designed prosthetics built for precision and recovery, this is tech meeting humanity in the most urgent way possible. Dr. Evgeni Kolesnikov’s research shows how AI is redefining what’s possible when machine learning meets medicine.🌍💻 Nowhere to Hide: Dr. Julia Shaw on the Rise of ‘Green Crime’ and the Tech Tracking the Planet’s Worst OffendersCriminal psychologist Dr. Julia Shaw is on the show to talk about the tech behind her new book “Green Crime: Inside the Minds of the People Destroying the Planet - and How to Stop Them”. 16m X users in EU unmonitored and How Sudan’s WhatsApp Ban Is Cutting Off Survival
🌐 Crisis of Social Media Moderation - 16m in EU without checks online 14% of EU based X users have no human content moderators in their languages, according to new research from the Oxford Internet Institute. 16 million EU-based users of X don’t have moderators for their national language. Hate speech in English is often flagged and removed quickly. But in many other languages - including Italian, Portuguese, Arabic and Spanish - especially on smaller platforms, dangerous content stays online unchecked. This moderation gap leaves entire communities exposed to harassment and disinformation. The study also found gaps on LinkedIn. The lead author of the study, Manuel Tonneau speaks to Gareth. 📵 Sudan’s WhatsApp Ban: A Lifeline Cut OffSudan has blocked WhatsApp voice and video calls, citing vague security concerns. For families separated by war, aid workers, and journalists, this was a vital lifeline. The Keep It On coalition say the ban is less about safetyand more about control, worsening isolation and disrupting humanitarian relief. In conflict zones, connectivity isn’t optional - it’s survival. They are calling for the ban to be lifted immediately. The programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell and the studio expert is Ania Lichtarowicz. Does AI speak your Language? African voices and Explosive Braille technology
From underserved African languages to a revolutionary Brailledisplay — the latest Somewhere on Earth podcast covers stories thatmatter.Story 1 – AI and African LanguagesHausa, spoken by 94 million people, is understood by ChatGPT only 10-20% of the time. The issue? Lack of training data. A team behind African Next Voices has recorded 9,000 hours of speech across eighteen African languages, creating datasets to train AI and finally bring these languages online. Dr Ife Adebara CTO of EqualizeAI and Lead Solutions Engineer at Data Science Nigeria shares insights into the challenges, scope, and wider economic potential of this project.Story 2 – Micro-Explosive BrailleMost braille displays only show one line at a time, limiting access to complex content. A team from Cornell, MIT, and Michigan Universities has developed a multiline braille display using micro-explosions of fuel gas in silicone sheets to raise dots safely and rapidly. Tested successfully with users, this innovation could bring tactile reading into classrooms, libraries, and homes, while opening applications in VR, AR, and biomedical research.
