Sourdough Modernity

Sourdough Modernity is what happens when two brothers one in the US and one in Mongolia skip the bread making craze and start baking up conversations. We talk to every day people (the kind you’ve never heard of, but should) whose kindness, empathy and generosity ripple far beyond their own lives. No celebrities, no click bait - just real humans proving that caring still matters. In a world where all of our peers either learn to make sourdough or start a podcast, we chose the podcast.

HC15 - The Essence of Flowers- How To Make Your Own Flower Essence & Connect w. Plants

Flower essences are —created through water, sunlight, living flowers, and communing/ attuning to the plant— they work in subtle ways, meeting us on emotional and energetic levels, cultivating deep transformation. In this episode, we explore what flower essences are, how to make them, and how to work with them intentionally. We talk about the energetics of flowers, the role of touch and presence, and how water acts as a receptive carrier—briefly touching on experiments that explore how water responds to words, energy, and intention, including the work of Masaru Emoto. This is also a reminder that medicine doesn’t always need to be heavy, forceful, or high-dose to be effective. Sometimes the smallest dose—taken consistently and with care—creates the deepest shift.

From a childhood Walmart VHS run with Aunt Chick to the 15-year wait for the RoboCop statue I helped fund, we reflect on how RoboCop’s struggle to reclaim his humanity resonates today in a world of AI, corporate overreach, and privatized policing. SE01 EP37 - Beyond The Preventionist: The Reality of a Social Worker

In this episode, I sit down with my brother, a longtime social worker who’s spent years on the ground in both Montana and Pennsylvania, to talk about The Preventionist, the newest podcast from Serial Productions—and why its themes hit so close to home for him.We dig into the realities of frontline social work, from crisis response to the day-to-day responsibilities of Youth and Protective Services. My brother offers an inside look at what the job really entails, what most people misunderstand, and why prevention work rarely gets the spotlight it deserves. We also break down Pennsylvania’s Chafee Program and the ongoing effort to grant social workers first-responder status in the state. It’s a conversation about power, policy, and the people who fall through the cracks when systems don’t work the way they should. Along the way, we raise a call to action: contact your state representatives and local officials to advocate for better funding, smarter policy, and a more humane support system—because no single doctor, agency, or authority should hold disproportionate power over a young person’s future. If you’ve ever wondered what social workers actually do, why prevention matters, or how to get involved in meaningful change, this episode opens the door.www.buymeacoffee.com/sourdoughmodernityEmail us at: [email protected]. - WE HAVE MERCH NOW!https://ky1pgh-dy.myshopify.com/

SE01 EP35: The Way of the Gun

In this episode, we dive into the messy, confusing, and downright frustrating landscape of modern American responsibility and politics. We start with a sliding scale of responsibility around guns—who’s using them, who’s misusing them, and how recent stories (including that wild Netflix Greatest Neighbor doc) expose the contradictions in “stand your ground” culture. From homeowners firing at federal agents in unmarked vans to communities slipping into racialized fear, we ask: if no one is actually using their Second Amendment the way it was intended, what’s the point? From there, we explore the historical contrasts between the Black Panthers and modern white nationalist movements, with nods to Michael Moore’s documentaries and how they still echo today. Then we shift to the political arena, where we talk about Democrats being… well, a bust. From their refusal to back candidates like Zorhan to their broader pattern of performative politics, we ask whether small-town organizing and real town halls—Bernie-style—might be the only way out.We wrap by tackling government responsibility: why are we paying taxes while people wait endlessly for basics like SNAP benefits? What does “representation” even mean when the people in charge won’t deliver on the essentials? It’s a conversation about the strange sourdough rise of American modernity.www.buymeacoffee.com/sourdoughmodernityEmail us at: [email protected]. - WE HAVE MERCH NOW!https://ky1pgh-dy.myshopify.com/

I share why this resilient little needle-leafed guardian has been treasured for centuries, from kitchen witchery to energetic cleansing to supporting the brain, nervous system, respiratory, skin, and spirit. We pause with Shakespeare’s timeless line from A Midsummer Night’s Dream:“There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance.”I also break down how to work with rosemary in daily ritual, herbal practice, and simple home remedies…and at the end, I gift you a rosemary fire cider recipe, infused with kitchen alchemy and seasonal spice.✨ Come Find Me:Instagram: https://instagram.com/savagesoulsbotaniksWebsite: https://savagesoulsbotaniks.comLeave a rating & review & send a screen shot for a free tea P.S. - I HAVE MERCH NOW!https://ky1pgh-dy.myshopify.com/

In this special crossover episode, guest host Paul Brown — barbershop owner, life insurance pro, and creator of It’s Always Personal in Philadelphia — jumps in to co-host and open up his studio as we sit down with someone we both know from North Star Mixed Martial Arts: Jay.When I first walked into North Star MMA, I wasn’t there to make friends. Hood up, earbuds in, train hard, go home. That was the entire plan. But then there was Jay — the human contradiction to my antisocial gym routine. Loud, outgoing, endlessly positive, and somehow always able to pull you out of your shell. Within weeks he had me at my first Korean hot pot. Months later, he had become one of the most genuine connections I’d made in adulthood. But behind Jay’s energy is a story that doesn’t show on the mats. A story that weighed over 300 pounds at its heaviest. One that now stands at 166 — but the real fight was never on the scale. From early relapses to moments of doubt, from fighting in the cage to fighting in your own head, Jay shares a brutally honest look at what it really takes to rebuild a life — not just a body.We wrap with reflections on self-worth, advice for anyone feeling stuck, and what work is still ahead. This isn’t a weight-loss episode. SE01 EP33 - Blue Collar Bastards: The Real Working-Class Revolution

In this episode, we sit down with Dalton Dreihaus — better known online as someidiotwithawrench — to dig into what it really means to be working class in America today. From the garage to the grain field, Dalton brings a no-BS perspective on how car culture, farming, and labor have all been twisted by modern narratives. We talk about how the working class — the original left — built the foundation for fair labor laws, the 40-hour work week, and the right to live with dignity. We dive into everything from coal miners’ fights against company towns and mining scripts to today’s farmers being squeezed by soybean shortages and cuts to SNAP and WIC benefits. This isn’t about politics — it’s about survival, solidarity, and remembering who built this country from the ground up. Dalton’s raw honesty reminds us that being “blue collar” isn’t an aesthetic — it’s a history of resistance. We built this city on rock n’ roll.👉 Follow Dalton on YouTube and Instagram: @someidiotwithawrench 🎥 Watch him on YouTube: @@someidiotwithawrenchSomeIdiotWithaWrenchwww.buymeacoffee.com/sourdoughmodernityEmail us at: [email protected]. - WE HAVE MERCH NOW!https://ky1pgh-dy.myshopify.com/

SE01 EP32 - Losing Sight of the Message: When Faith and Practice Don’t Align

This week, we’re calling it like we see it. Too many Christians in America preach love and humility on Sunday but live in contradiction the rest of the week. My brother and I share what we’ve seen firsthand—how faith can get tangled in politics, judgment, and money instead of the teachings of Jesus. We talk about how supporting harsh immigration policies and agencies like U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement goes against the compassion Christ taught, and how true faith means feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, and caring for those in need. We also take a hard look at churches and Christian organisations that accept donations without showing where that money goes. If an organisation is tax-exempt, it has a responsibility to be fully transparent with its donors and remain free from overt political influence.I’m currently reading Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes Du Mez, and it’s helping frame this conversation:“Christian nationalism—the belief that America is God’s chosen nation and must be defended as such—serves as a powerful predictor of intolerance toward immigrants, racial minorities, and non-Christians.” But there’s hope, too. More pastors, priests, and faith leaders are starting to speak out—calling for accountability, justice, and a return to the core of Jesus’ message: love, service, and humility. It’s a conversation about faith, integrity, and what it really means to live as a follower of Christ in today’s America.www.buymeacoffee.com/sourdoughmodernityEmail us at: [email protected]. - WE HAVE MERCH NOW!https://ky1pgh-dy.myshopify.com/📣 Public Service Announcement: also… take care of yourself, question everything, and go listen to GWAR. SE01 EP31 - My Dad, the Accidental Progressive

Our parents split for good reasons — Mom knew how to love us, and Allen… well, he didn’t. She built a good life after the divorce. He built walls. Now they’re both aging, both fragile in different ways — Mom recovering from a stroke, Allen in the hospital after a heart attack — and we’re grappling with how much we do or do not care.In this episode, I talk with my dad — the man who spent most of his life screaming, slapping, or throwing things — and something is happening. He is starting to soften. He talks kindly about his Muslim neighbors, the same people he once dismissed. Maybe it’s gratitude. Maybe it’s fear. Maybe it’s what happens when your world gets small and the people who show up for you aren’t who you expected. It’s a story about caregiving from both sides of a fractured family: a mom who’s always shown love, a dad learning what it actually means, and the kids caught in between — trying to make peace with both.www.buymeacoffee.com/sourdoughmodernityEmail us at: [email protected]. - WE HAVE MERCH NOW!https://ky1pgh-dy.myshopify.com/

HC05 - Wounded Warrior- Herbs for skin healing

In this week’s episode, we’re talking all about one of my favorite everyday essentials — the Wounded Warrior Salve — my grown-up version of the “boo boo bear” I begged my mom for every time I scraped a knee or got a bruise back in the 90’s. (Yes, I may have cried when she finally threw it away — what can I say, I’m a nostalgic soul.)This salve is that same kind of comfort in a tin — soothing, antibacterial, and deeply healing — perfect for bumps, bruises, bites, burns, and all the little skin scrapes life throws our way. Whether you’re 5 or 55 or 105, this is for you. We’ll explore the herbs that make this salve so special — Plantain for drawing out splinters and soothing burns, Comfrey for speeding healing and easing aches, Desert Willow for its antifungal and antiseptic magic, Chamomile for calming inflammation and redness, Calendula for mending skin and preventing infection, and Creosote for its powerful wound-healing protection.A true herbal first aid — gentle enough for kids, strong enough for warriors, and versatile enough that, yes, you can even use it on your lips.Tune in to learn how these plants work together to mend the skin, comfort the spirit, and remind us that healing is a process — one we can meet with tenderness and a little salve in our pocket.🌿 Follow along on Instagram @savagesoulsbotaniksTo purchase this salve visit www.savagesoulsbotaniks.com and go to shop P.S. - WE HAVE MERCH NOW!https://ky1pgh-dy.myshopify.com/

In this episode, we dive into the lost art of debate — where listening, asking questions, and actually learning used to matter. What do we expect from influencers when their platforms grow bigger than the networks that once shaped public opinion? Should they be held accountable if their followers take action — even violently? And would they keep speaking out if they knew what might come from it?In this episode, we’re joined by Dustin aka @burnest_hemingway to talk about the dangerous dance between influence, censorship, and truth in the age of collapsing trust. We get into blue fascism, the FCC’s panic over unregulated voices, and how legacy media is losing its grip now that people can get perspective from those they can’t control — voices we actually respect. We explore the difference between the Republicans and the Democrats, how "bipartisanship" usually just means screwing over the working class, and what MLK’s real legacy teaches us about how radical truth-tellers are treated in their own time. Plus: Flat Earth, Land Before Time conspiracies, and whether Pluto deserves a second chance. The more people who hear you, the more risk you carry — even if you’re saying the same thing. From surviving cancer and getting a heart stent, to bringing a homeless man home for the night, Mike shares raw reflections on what it means to live to serve. He opens up about his Catholic upbringing, his views on fear as a powerful (and underrated) motivator, and how his parents taught him the value of generosity over greed — what he calls avoiding the "money burn."We talk about the Ronald McDonald House, the heartbreak in Gaza, the broken state of U.S. politics (yes, Elon Musk’s "American Party" comes up), and why the middle ground — not the extremes — is where the real America still lives.Mike also leads the historic Philadelphia Paper & Cordage, proving that community-rooted business still matters. He’s not on a pedestal — he's just a real one-of-a-kind human being who reminds us that giving back isn't just a slogan… it’s survival.🔗 Support the pod: Buy Me a Coffee🔗 Volunteer at Ronald McDonald House: Click here to sign up🔗 Support Live to Serve PA: livetoservepa.com🔗 Rep. SE01 EP24 - The Sun Also Sets on the Working Class - A Conversation with Dustin

In this powerful and wide-ranging conversation, Dustin joins Sourdough Modernity to dig deep into the fractures that keep working people divided — and the forces that benefit from it. From the artificiality of race as a construct to the way white identity has been used to split the working class, we examine the myths that uphold systemic power. We talk about the quiet dangers of choosing comfort over conviction — how mundane relationships and social niceties can silence people when speaking up matters most. Dustin challenges us to rethink what we stand for, even if it means making things uncomfortable. We explore the longevity of "ice" — as metaphor and literal history — and how racism in the American South reveals the deeper coldness of empire and extraction. The conversation touches on solidarity movements like Free Palestine, the legacy of radical organizations like the Black Panthers, and the importance of setting your own standards in a world that often rewards submission to money and power. At the heart of it all is a call to curiosity: a belief in learning, unlearning, and engaging with your world in a way that respects the intelligence of others — especially those whose experiences don’t mirror your own.📲 Follow Dustin for more insight and sharp commentary:Instagram: @burnest_hemingwayTikTok: @dustinschreiner2This episode is an invitation to challenge what you’ve been taught, to stay human in dehumanizing systems, and to hold onto a sense of wonder and resistance at the same time.Www.buymeacoffee.com/sourdoughmodernity

Samantha shares what it really takes to fight for housing, dignity, and justice on the ground. But we don’t stop there. We also go in on toxic masculinity, the incel mindset, and why our right to porn deserves defending in a culture obsessed with controlling bodies and blaming women. SE01 EP22 - Ride Again, Roosevelt: Radical Patriotism

The two-party system is broken — and Teddy Roosevelt wouldn’t stand for it. In this Sourdough Modernity rally cry, we channel the spirit of the Bull Moose himself to take back patriotism from performative flag-waving, Cosplay law enforcement and put it where it belongs: defending freedom, justice, and community. We’re talking voting rights for the incarcerated, rehabilitation over punishment, and putting ICE on trial for its abuses. With AI’s help (so the truth cuts through the spin), we explore why it’s “radical” to believe in the very American values written into our Constitution. The Bull Moose Party isn’t history — it’s the future. And the future needs you to saddle up."If Teddy Roosevelt were alive today, he’d be leading a charge to break the two-party system — and ICE would be in his crosshairs." 🦬🇺🇸Www.buymeacoffee.com/sourdoughmodernityCredits: Producer - Taylor Moyer

    SE01 EP21 - T RASHxSTRIKE & Staying True: Hardcore, Straight Edge, & Fighting the Algorithm w/ Jake

In this episode, we catch up with Jake from TRASHxSTRIKE to talk about the recent Philadelphia trash strike, the value of labor, and why paying workers a living wage should matter to all of us — especially those of us raised on the ethics of DIY and community care. We dig into how the systems we live under often exploit the people who keep everything moving, and why it’s time to take that personally. We also unpack how technology and constant exposure are rewiring human behavior, and how algorithms now shape ideology in ways that feel more invasive — and more dangerous — than ever. What does it mean to think for yourself in a world designed to think for you? Sounds like some Matrix shit, I know. From there, we get into the roots: hardcore, straight edge, and the bands that raised us — Floorpunch, Shai Hulud, Sick of It All. We talk about how the scene gave us a sense of purpose, and how the people we met in those sweaty rooms became more than friends — they became family. As we get older, we’ve lost some of those people. We talk about what that means, and how we keep showing up for each other anyway. Because staying true isn’t just about the music — it’s about how you live, and how you love the people who made you who you are.www.buymeacoffee.com/sourdoughmoderityhttps://www.instagram.com/trashxstrike?igsh=MWlxZzNycGZnd2FpMw==

    SE01 EP20 -Savage Soul Botaniks recap/Jenn Bell

In this insightful (and, let’s be real, not-quite-as-intuitive) recap, we revisit the powerful conversation with Jenn Bell, founder of Savage Soul Botaniks. Jenn breaks down her work in herbalism, astrology, and ancestral healing, sharing how she weaves together plant medicine and cosmic insight to support collective and spiritual transformation. We also expand the conversation beyond the personal into the political: 🔪 Reflecting on the Blackstone shooting in New York, we dig into how classism, systemic violence, and state power contribute to unrest. 📜 We talk about the dangerous normalization of executive orders, how they sidestep democratic processes, and why many are arguably unconstitutional. ⏳ The need for term limits comes up — because power unchecked for decades is a recipe for stagnation and authoritarian creep. ⚖️ And we call for a return to basic due process, something that’s increasingly eroded in both policy and everyday life. No, we’re not Jenn. And no, we’re not as tapped in. But we’re trying to carry the spirit of the conversation forward — raw, honest, and a little radical.Follow Jenn and explore her work: 🌿 Website: https://www.savagesoulsbotaniks.com/ 🌙 Instagram: @savagesoulbotanikswww.buymeacoffee.com/sourdoughmoderity

ABOUT THIS SHOW

Sourdough Modernity is what happens when two brothers one in the US and one in Mongolia skip the bread making craze and start baking up conversations. We talk to every day people (the kind you’ve never heard of, but should) whose kindness, empathy and generosity ripple far beyond their own lives. No celebrities, no click bait - just real humans proving that caring still matters. In a world where all of our peers either learn to make sourdough or start a podcast, we chose the podcast.
