A few weeks ago I was on a plane and overheard a mum hiss at her son: "It doesn't matter what you WANT — it only matters what you DESERVE."That's one of the deepest assumptions we carry about the world: good people get good things, bad people get bad things, and what you have is what you've earned. Call it karma, call it fairness, call it consequences. You get what you deserve.The problem is, most of us have failed enough times to be quietly convinced we don't deserve God's acceptance anymore. So we either try to climb harder (and burn out) or make excuses (and stop being responsible for anything). Both keep us from the one thing we actually need.This is part one of a two-part series on grace — the central and distinctive doctrine of Christianity. Grace is the opposite of what we deserve. It's God doing good things for bad people. And it begins with two of the most important words in the New Testament: But God.Drawing from Ephesians 2:1–10, this message looks at the first half of grace — what theologians call imputation, or what we might just call acceptance. It's the truth that God didn't lower the bar, didn't grade you on a curve, and didn't wait for you to clean yourself up.
