Tournament Time For Oregon State Baseball
Oregon State baseball may not have done enough to host a regional in Corvallis, but they won't have to travel too far from home. The Beavers begin the NCAA Tournament in Eugene alongside the Oregon Ducks, Washington State, and Yale. That's the bulk of the discussion this week on the State of the Beavs podcast. Your host Matt Bagley is joined by On SI contributors John Severs and Ben Pahl for a roundtable chat about what to expect from the Eugene Regional. There's also plenty more to talk about with the Pac-12 and Mountain West settlement having a reported number now. Go Beavs. Music by audionautix.com. Has Beaver Baseball Done Enough To Host A Regional in 2026?
The regular season has concluded for Mitch Canham's Oregon State baseball squad. Finishing their second season as an independent, a conference tournament likely would have had the chance to pad their resume a bit further. Sitting right on the edge of the top 16 teams in the nation in RPI, but comfortably inside the top ten in the major polls, have the Beavers done enough convince the selection committee that Corvallis should host a regional? With the selection show coming on Monday, Matt Bagley reviews what the Beavers have accomplished so far in 2026 and if they have enough left in the tank to contend for their fourth national championship. The Beavs' men's basketball program is also on something of a hot streak, signing more recruits via the transfer portal, including the intriguing Latvian pro Peteris Pinnis, formerly of Providence. Also, this week, the Pac-12 Conference and Mountain West Conference agreed to settle their two-year legal battle over the exit fees and poaching penalties pertaining to the former Mountain West clubs joining the league. Your host Matt Bagley gives an update on the latest as the two sides work out a settlement. Go Beavs. Music by audionautix.com. Beaver Baseball Closes Regular Season + More Pac-12 Realignment?
The regular season is coming to a close for Oregon State baseball, who once again have eclipsed the 40-win mark for the year. Ultimately though, the goal remains the same: get back to Omaha. The first step in doing so will be to secure a home regional again. Have Mitch Canham's group done enough to make that happen? Without a conference tournament to play, they'll have to wait a little bit. On this week's State of the Beavs, your host Matt Bagley is joined by On SI contributor John Severs for a fairly all-encompassing conversation on Oregon State athletics. John offers his observations on life in Corvallis, Oregon State football, and the Scott Rueck era of OSU women's basketball. The rumor mill is once again turning with regards to the Pac-12 Conference. What's in store for the league as they continue to prepare for the league's return in the 2026-2027 academic year? Matt offers his take on the conversation surrounding realignment in the last week. Oregon State baseball have one series left in the regular season, hosting the Air Force Falcons starting on Thursday. What should we expect from the Beavers in those three final regular season games? The Effects of Dax Whitney's Injury For Oregon State Baseball
With just a few short weeks left until the NCAA Baseball Tournament begins, Oregon State have lost their All-American starting pitcher Dax Whitney to an elbow injury. The full extent of his future recovery is not immediately clear, but his college career may be over. Whitney's injury is the primary topic of conversation this week among Oregon State fans, as well with your host Matt Bagley. Contributor Ben Pahl also makes an appearance on this week's show to discuss how the Beavers can handle Whitney's absence on the mound and in the dugout. On this week's episode, listeners also get an update on the pod's plans for the coming months, including several guests from around the landscape of West Coast college sports. Those guests will help give a more complete picture of where the Pac-12 Conference goes from here and what the competitive landscape of the league will look like in the new configuration. What We Learned From The Oregon State Spring Game
Oregon State football finished their spring practice schedule with a scrimmage at Reser Stadium this past weekend. Time to talk about it on this week's State of the Beavs. Hear audio from Beavs head coach JaMarcus Shephard's press availability following the scrimmage and his thoughts on what his team accomplished in recent weeks. Your host Matt Bagley also gives his thoughts on how the Beavers looked in the scrimmage. The recent weeks have allowed the program to start laying a foundation, but where do they go from here? How does the program pitch itself to the next generation of talent from high school and the transfer portal? After the football talk, put a bow on a period of heavy transition for Oregon State men's basketball with a review of what Justin Joyner has brought to Corvallis. While not much changed for the women's program, it's also a good time to take stock what's to come in the short term for Scott Rueck's team. Meanwhile, Oregon State baseball swept Hawaii this past weekend, but an injury to star RHP Dax Whitney has put a damper on the vibe. Go Beavs. Music by audionautix.com. Previewing Oregon State Football's 2026 Spring Game
As spring football winds down for the Oregon State Beavers, JaMarcus Shephard's group will play the annual Spring Game this Saturday at noon PT, their first under Shephard. Your host Matt Bagley takes an extensive look this week at what we might learn about the team when they take the field at Reser Stadium. As we've noted several times over the last few months, 2026 is a chance at a whole new era for Oregon State football. While it's a very football-heavy week for Oregon State sports, there's still plenty to talk about with the other sports. The men's basketball program seized some opportunities to rebuild under new head coach Justin Joyner, while the women have yet to add any new faces. Scott Rueck's did lose three minor players from last year's group to the portal, but more significant losses came from graduation. On the baseball diamond, the Beavers took a home series against Cal State Fullerton, but didn't look invincible the way that they have in the last few weeks. Oregon State Football's New Identity + MBB's Early Recruiting Wins
Spring football continues this week for the Oregon State Beavers. Head coach Jamarcus Shephard spoke to local media in Corvallis to give an update on his team's progression after getting to see them in action in a live scrimmage. Shephard is already looking to see how far along he can get his team by the time they reach the spring game, which is rapidly approaching. It's also been a substantially busy period for the men's basketball program, notably securing the commitment of Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year Jackson Rasmussen, who starred for the Idaho Vandals last season. Next season, what can he add to a team that tried several different frontcourt combos under Wayne Tinkle last year. Meanwhile on the baseball diamond, Oregon State have reached No. 5 in the national rankings as they look to continue the season later this week against Cal State Fullerton. While the Beavers followed an 18-0 win over Washington State with an uncharateristic loss to the Cougs, their sweep of Cal Poly was enough to win the type of favor they needed to move up again and improve their chances of hosting a regional when the regular season wraps up. Looming Transfer Portal Trouble For Oregon State Basketball
Things are starting to take shape for the Oregon State football program. JaMarcus Shephard is looking to see where the remaining pieced of his team can fit for the 2026 season as spring ball continues. Shephard also noted this week that he hopes he will get to be part of selecting OSU's next athletic director. Meanwhile, the men's basketball program has now added four assistant coaches to help Justin Joyner take the first step as head coach. Learn who those new additions are and how their backgrounds can be beneficial to the rebuild. That rebuild is helped along by Josiah Lake's pledge to return to Corvallis for another season. Scott Rueck's women's basketball program is also looking at significant turnover again heading into their first year in the new Pac-12. What are the key roster holes that the OSU women will have to fill? Oregon State baseball remains in the top ten this week despite a blowout loss to Washington last week. The good news is Mitch Canham's team look to be surging again with a four-game road winning streak. Moving On From The Scott Barnes Era At Oregon State
This past week, Oregon State Director of Athletics Scott Barnes announced that he will step down this August after a decade on the job in Corvallis. It's a massive change, but one that's probably needed as the University rejoins the Pac-12. Barnes is expected to help transition his successor and remain as an advisor to the department until 2027. How did we get here and what's next? Meanwhile, with football continuing to rebuild under JaMarcus Shephard, some things are coming into focus, while others are not. What are the biggest unknowns about the Beaver football team as the month of April begins? Per reports, the Oregon State basketball coaching staff is growing with Justin Joyner hiring his first two assistants. Who are Danny Yoshikawa and Michael Plank and what can they bring to the program? Oregon State baseball are again inside the top ten nationally after a few dominant performances against Mercer in Corvallis this weekend. Harder games are ahead of them, but Oregon State have proven they have (at-least) two of the best pitchers in the country with Dax Whitney and Albert Roblez. What does Mitch Canham's group need to do to keep it going against bigger competition in the coming days? Big Questions For Oregon State Football & Basketball in 2026
It's late March and once again, neither of Oregon State's basketball programs are still part of the madness. To state the obvious, women's basketball head coach Scott Rueck and newly hired men's basketball head coach Justin Joyner are hoping to change that in the new year...it would make Scott Barnes' life a whole lot easier too. For Joyner in particular, he'll need to set up his recruiting pipeline, build a staff, and make a lot of high-impact decisions to set himself up for success. What should his highest priorities be this spring and summer? The Beaver football program will continue spring practices this month, and at the majority of positions, it's not particularly clear at this point who will be the main pieces for OSU. This week on state of the Beavs, we take a critical look at a few key position groups. Also, the Beaver baseball program is playing like they want to be a bigger part of the national conversation. Oregon State's latest road trip to Southern California yielded a few strong performances against UC Irvine. The Beavers also managed to find success even in an off day for Friday starter Dax Whitney. Oregon State Hires Justin Joyner + Spring Football Begins
After parting ways with Wayne Tinkle, Oregon State have hired Michigan assistant and former Randy Bennett protege Justin Joyner to guide the Beavers men's basketball program back to prominence. Joyner was introduced in Corvallis this week and discussed his background and early plans for the program. The Oregon State football program has also begun spring practices in advance of JaMarcus Shephard's first season as head coach. Shephard laid out what he wants to see his group do before they move into the summer months. Hear that audio in this week's episode. Meanwhile, Oregon State women's basketball nearly secured their second West Coast Conference title, but couldn't close it out in the WCC Tournament against Gonzaga. Their season isn't quite over, however, as Scott Rueck's group prepare to host Wisconsin in the opening round of the WBIT. On the diamond, Oregon State's sweep of San Diego saw them give their best effort to quell the "pray for bats" sentiment, including a career-best performance from AJ Singer. That moved the baseball program to nine consecutive wins before Tuesday night's surprising loss to Portland. The question now becomes can Mitch Canham's squad maintain that level of offensive production while finding some consistency in the bullpen? Time will tell ahead of another trip down to the Los Angeles area. Your host Matt Bagley covers all of it this week on a new episode of State of the Beavs. Go Beavs. Music by audionautix.com. Beaver Baseball's Wonderful Week + Searching For MBB's Next Coach
Over the past week, the Oregon State baseball program has given the Beavers plenty to smile about with a win over the Oregon Ducks and a perfect 4-0 series against Xavier in Corvallis. In addition to the offensive surge, Dax Whitney continues to show that he is one of the nation's top pitchers with a continued string of stellar performances on the mound. Whitney currently leads the NCAA in strikeouts with a whopping 45 in four appearances for OSU (24.1 total innings). Meanwhile, on the hardwood, the Oregon State women got revenge on Loyola Marymount in the West Coast Conference tournament, but could not repeat as league champions. The men got a stellar performance out of Dez White to beat San Francisco, but couldn't stop Graham Ike and Gonzaga as their season came to an end. The focus in Oregon State athletics now shifts to finding Wayne Tinkle's replacement. Who can fit the bill to elevate the program past what Tinkle was able to accomplish in his lengthy tenure with OSU? Oregon State's football program also began spring practice with a lengthy to-do list. What does the coaching staff need to prioritize before OSU's spring game on April 25? The new Pac-12 era is only a few short months away in Corvallis. Time to recap an eventful week of Beaver sports with your host, Matt Bagley. Go Beavs. Music by audionautix.com. End of the Wayne Tinkle Era at Oregon State
After 12 seasons at the helm of Oregon State men's basketball, Wayne Tinkle is in his final days as the program's head coach. The big questions surrounding OSU's departure with Tinkle this week are "why now?" and "what's next?" The Beavers still have the West Coast Conference to deal with on both the men's and women's side. Your host Matt Bagley takes a look at the fields and what awaits the Beaver basketball programs in Las Vegas as they look to make a run at their respective trophies. It's also been another eventful week of the offseason for the Oregon State football program. Meanwhile, the Beaver baseball program clawed their way through the Round Rock College Baseball Classic over the weekend as they improved their record to 6-4, but fell again in the national rankings. Texas Trouble For Beaver Baseball + More Changes To Ducks Rivalry

The Beavers are looking to find their stride as they continue their stay in the Lone Star State this week with games against Houston, Alabama, and Iowa at the Frisco College Baseball Classic. Meanwhile, the Oregon State football program has a Spring Game to prepare for amidst a busy offseason for the group. We also learned this week that in addition to not being part of the schedule in 2026, the Ducks and Beavers will also not play one another in 2027. Baseball Season Begins For #11 Oregon State
It's an incredibly busy week for Oregon State sports entering the second weekend of February. However, Oregon State is not be the only department making big moves this month. North Dakota State football will join the Mountain West Conference for football this fall, adding more fuel to the conversation surrounding the Pac-12/MWC fallout. Your host Matt Bagley asks the question this week: would a move like this have helped the Pac-12 in the latest round of conference realignment? Also, Oregon State baseball begins their 2026 season this week in Surprise, Arizona. Hear audio from head coach Mitch Canham's latest media availability ahead of Friday's season opener against the Michigan Wolverines. 3 Takeaways From The Transfer Portal Window
The month of January has come to a close and the Oregon State Beavers have made a strong rebuilding effort heading into the first year of the JaMarcus Shephard era. That being said, there's still plenty to do make sure that the program is in a good place before spring football begins - given what was lost and what the last staff produced. Your host Matt Bagley dives into what that entails and the biggest lessons from the first year of the altered portal window with Director of Recruiting Michael Doctor now in place on Shephard's staff. Outside of football, both of the Oregon State basketball programs are on winning streaks to start the month of February. Bagley takes a look at the things that have made the Beavers successful on the hardwood in the last week, notably Kennedie Shuler's incredible run of form in the West Coast Conference. Shuler recently grabbed another West Coast Conference Player of the Week honor, leaving Scott Rueck impressed with his latest star guard to make an impact on the program. Also, Oregon State's highly anticipated baseball season begins in a matter of days. The Beavers open the campaign against Michigan on Friday, February 13 in Surprise, Arizona. What Can Oregon State Learn From Indiana's Championship Run?
In just a few short years, Curt Cignetti's staff at Indiana turned the Hoosiers from one of the worst Power Conference teams in the country, to a national championship. With Oregon State looking to regain relevance on the national stage, what lessons can JaMarcus Shephard and company take from the Cignetti blueprint? It's a question to be pondered on this week's State of the Beavs. Plus, your host Matt Bagley takes a deeper look the additions that Oregon State made in the transfer portal this January, the latest on Shephard's staff changes, and the Beaver alums who are making the jump to professional football this spring. On the hardwood, the Oregon State women landed a huge victory over Gonzaga and looked poised for one of the top seeds in the West Coast Conference Tournament. Meanwhile, the men's latest defeat at the hands of Saint Mary's will only make things harder for a team somehow still struggling to find chemistry in January. Joining Matt this week for a discussion is Dan Raley of Washington Huskies OnSI. Raley offered his perspective on Oregon State football's hiring of Chief of Staff Ron McKeefery, who previously spent time at Alabama and Washington under Kalen DeBoer. The start of Oregon State's baseball season is getting closer and closer. Head coach Mitch Canham spoke to media in Corvallis this past week to discuss the start of the 2026 campaign. Recapping The Transfer Portal Window For Beaver Football
The transfer portal is officially closed and while the Beavers can still sign players that remain in the portal, new players cannot enter the portal. Oregon State addressed several major needs for their first year under the guide of new head coach JaMarcus Shephard. While the player personnel situation is somewhat coming into focus, for 2026, the assistant coaching staff is another story. Just who exactly will coach Oregon State's defense in 2026? Matt Bagley has the latest on that component of Oregon State football's offseason. On the basketball court, the Oregon State women are tied with Gonzaga for the lead in the West Coast Conference. A showdown with the Zags looms on Thursday night in Corvallis. Meanwhile the Beaver men picked up a needed win against Loyola Marymount, but turned in a poor performance against Pacific over the weekend. With five conference losses already, Wayne Tinkle's group are running out of time to earn a favorable seed in March's West Coast Conference Tournament. In just under a month, the college baseball season begins for Oregon State in Surprise, Arizona. Bagley takes you through what you need to watch the start to what could be another exceptionally strong year for Mitch Canham's squad. Enjoy your week, and Go Beavs. Music by audionautix.com. Oregon State's Biggest Problem in 2026
It's a new year for Oregon State football, and there's plenty on JaMarcus Shephard's plate to start his tenure as the Beavers head coach. One of his first fires to put out may end up being the loss of his defensive coordinator, Lance Guidry, who has barely been the Oregon State DC for a week. It's not the only problem that Shephard has to deal with as he continues to put together a roster for the 2026 campaign. The staff is hard at work adding to the team, replacing nearly all of the talent from the previous two years. Your host Matt Bagley breaks down the latest additions to the group. On the hardwood, the Beaver men grabbed an impressive home win against Seattle, but then saw their road struggles continue in a six-point loss at Portland. As Wayne Tinkle continues to figure out what his strongest lineup configuration is, time is running out to build momentum ahead of the conference tournament. The Oregon State women, meanwhile, are on a seven-game winning streak. They'll take a road trip to Los Angeles on Thursday night for a battle with Loyola Marymount. Jenna Villa has eight consecutive games with a point total in the double digits, showing her value to Scott Rueck after transferring in from Washington State. All that, plus baseball season is around the corner. The Beavers are once again expected to be a national power, reaching a top ten ranking in several national polls. What is the potential of Mitch Canham's squad in 2026? The Beavers begin the season on the diamond on February 13 in Arizona against Michigan. Go Beavs. Music by audionautix.com. The Transfer Portal is Open For Oregon State Football
The transfer portal has officially opened for the college football world. For the next two weeks, rosters all over the country will be shifting significantly in preparation for the new season. Obviously, after a two-win season and a coaching change, Oregon State's roster will look significantly different in 2026. The question is, what should the Beavers actually salvage from their 2025 roster? More importantly, do they have what they need to actually accomplish that? This week on State of the Beavs, your host Matt Bagley looks at who could be difference makers on next year's roster if they can give Corvallis another shot. Meanwhile on the hardwood, the Oregon State men need a shot in the arm after a tough start to their West Coast Conference schedule. The women however seem to be finding their footing early. An In-Depth Look at JaMarcus Shephard's Staff
Since his hiring and subsequent arrival in Corvallis, new Oregon State football coach JaMarcus Shephard has wasted no time in putting his staff together. The Beavers have brought in a host of new position coaches to help jumpstart their development on both sides of the ball. Meanwhile on the hardwood, Oregon State basketball has their work cut out for them in the next few weeks. The men's team have a winning streak going, a nice rebound from their disastrous end to the month of November. Now, Wayne Tinkle's group must prepare for a visit from the Sam Houston Bearkats and a trip south to face the Arizona State Sun Devils this week. On the women's side, the Beavers dropped a valiant battle to the Arizona State Sun Devils in overtime, falling to 6-5 on the season. If last season taught us anything, however, it's that conference play is the most important thing to consider, come March. Before that happens, however, Oregon State will play two games in Makawao, Hawaii this week against Montana State and Liberty as part of the Maui Invitational. Oregon State Football Coaching Candidates To Watch
Depending on who you ask, some would say that Oregon State football's loss to Sam Houston on Saturday marked a new low for the program. It's an ever devolving situation that even we didn't think would get to this point, but here we are. While Robb Akey may have started as a viable candidate for the permanent head coaching job, this latest failure likely killed any hopes on that front. So who should be on the Beavers' radar now?
