Why Do I Keep Messing Up the Same Stuff?

Through the lens of Internal Family Systems (IFS), they talk about learning to recognize the motives behind our actions and understanding the parts of ourselves that show up in difficult moments. They also reflect on the importance of self-compassion, because while we all make mistakes, they don't define who we are.

  2. 69

    The Loneliness Epidemic

Loneliness isn’t always about being alone. Sometimes it can exist even in the middle of relationships. In this episode, Chris and Alison explore the growing loneliness epidemic and the surprising ways it shows up in our lives. They unpack how it’s possible to feel more alone in a relationship than when you’re single, and why meaningful connection requires more than simply being around other people. They also discuss the challenges of making friendships as adults, the importance of shared interests in building connection, and why learning to turn toward others instead of away can make a powerful difference when someone is feeling lonely.

Signs You Are Stuck in Your Head

We often get caught in our own thoughts. We replay conversations, question ourselves, and search for answers that never seem to come. In this episode, Chris and Alison explore what it means to be “stuck in your head.” They talk about how mental loops form, how childhood experiences and loneliness can shape the way we think, and why acceptance and vulnerability play such an important role in emotional well-being. They also share practical ways to interrupt overthinking, including mindfulness, breathing, and simple techniques for defusing negative thoughts.

  6. 65

What Is vs. What Ought to Be

We spend a lot of time thinking about how life should be, and not enough time facing how it actually is.In this episode, Chris and Alison explore the tension between “what is” and “what ought to be,” and how living in that gap can leave us feeling stuck, frustrated, and helpless. They talk about why accepting reality is the starting point for change, how “shoulds” and “oughts” can keep us stuck, and what it looks like to take small, honest steps forward. They also reflect on relationships, growth, and why knowing where you are matters more than where you think you should be.Because you can’t move forward until you know where you are.

  7. 64

Where Do I Go When I Need Help?

Most of us don’t think about where to go for mental health help until we actually need it. This week, Chris and Alison sit down with Michael McClendon to talk about how to find the right kind of support. This includes the differences between psychiatry and psychology, how to navigate your options when you’re feeling stuck, and why sometimes it takes a “test drive” with a therapist to find the right fit. They also reflect on what it means to get unstuck, and why taking the first step toward help matters more than getting it perfect.

  8. 63

Why Trust Breaks (and How We Get It Wrong)

Trust is essential to every relationship, but we often misunderstand how it actually works. In this episode, Chris and Alison explore how trust grows through truly knowing and understanding our partners. They talk about faking shared interests or being passive to connect, why that rarely builds real trust, and how honesty, curiosity, humility, and patience create stronger relationships.

  9. 62

Raising Humans, Not Projects (with Greg Taylor)

In this episode of Stuck in My Head, Chris and Alison sit down with Greg Taylor to explore a question many parents are quietly asking: What does it actually mean to raise resilient, healthy kids in an anxious age?Together, they reflect on shared experiences and belonging, the Parable of the Prodigal Son and its picture of wastefully extravagant love, and the difference between parenting with humility and parenting from fear. They talk about breaking generational cycles, resisting formulaic approaches, phone dependence, and why avoiding pain might be hurting our kids more than helping them. When we choose love over control and connection over performance, we create space for children to become fully human.

  10. 61

Ask the Expert: The Truth About Your Inner Critic

Your inner critic knows exactly what to say. It can sound like truth. It can sound like protection. But often, it’s something else entirely. In this week’s episode of Stuck in My Head, Alison and Chris sit down for an Ask the Expert conversation with Brianna Wilson, LPC candidate at GPS Therapies, to explore the inner critic— what it is, why it forms, and how we can begin to relate to it differently. And stay tuned for next week’s Ask the Expert episode with Greg Taylor! We will focus on raising resilient kids and how we can support strength and confidence in the next generation.

What Do People Most Misunderstand About You?

In this episode of Stuck in My Head, Chris and Alison explore a deceptively simple but deeply revealing question: What do people most misunderstand about you? This question invites us to slow down and consider the gap between who we are and how we’re perceived— and how that gap shapes our relationships. Chris and Alison talk about why feeling misunderstood can be so painful, why we often protect the parts of ourselves we most want others to see, and how meaningful relationships require intention, curiosity, and effort. When we create space for honesty and orientation, we make room for deeper connection, empathy, and trust.Listen now, and consider the question for yourself—and the people closest to you.

  12. 59

    Tired? Or Something Deeper?

“Are you really just tired… or is something deeper going on?”For a long time, I told myself I was just tired. Just busy. Just in a season. It’s amazing how faithfully our bodies carry what our hearts are holding. And how often we try to power through instead of pausing long enough to listen. In this episode, we talk about the difference between ordinary exhaustion and something deeper like burnout — and why naming it can feel scary. But there’s also relief in honesty. There’s gentleness in saying, “This is where I am right now.”Healing doesn’t start with having it all figured out. It starts with paying attention. With responding to yourself with compassion instead of criticism. And sometimes, with letting someone walk alongside you. You’re not weak for feeling overwhelmed. You’re human.Join us for this conversation — and come back next week as we explore the question:“What do people misunderstand most about you?”#MentalHealthMatters #SelfCompassion #RelationalHealing #ItsOkNotToBeOk #StuckInMyHead

Through Maggie's birth story, we explore what it means to lose your bearings in a moment that’s supposed to be joyful, and how re-orienting yourself after trauma is often a relational process, not a solo one. This conversation sets the stage for the season ahead: honest, grounded, and centered on the ways connection helps us heal and move forward.Listen now, and stay tuned for new episodes coming in the new year as we continue exploring relationships, orientation, and the stories that shape us.

Orientation, Part 2 (A Conversation with Dr. Greg Robinson)

In Part 2 of our conversation on orientation, Alison and Chris are joined by Dr. Greg Robinson for a deeper dive into what it means to find our place in the world, internally and externally.Orientation is more than just knowing where you are on a map. In therapy and mental health, it’s about understanding how we relate to the people, experiences, and beliefs that shape our lives. When our "life map" gets blown up by change, loss, or trauma, it can be hard to know which way is forward.Greg brings his thoughtful perspective to this layered conversation about how orientation helps us recalibrate, re-center, and start moving again, even when we feel lost.Tune in wherever you get your podcasts, and don’t forget to catch Part 1 if you missed it!#StuckInMyHead #MentalHealth #Orientation #Podcast #GregRobinson #SelfAwareness #HealingJourney #EmotionalHealth

Orientation, Part 1 (A Conversation with Chris and Alison)

In this special episode of Stuck in My Head, Alison flips the script and interviews Chris about the concept of orientation. In therapy, orientation means knowing where you are— emotionally, relationally, spiritually. It’s how we make sense of our experiences and begin to move forward. When life doesn’t look the way we thought it would, the gap between what is and what ought to be can create deep pain. Orientation helps us face that gap with clarity and compassion.Stay tuned for part two!

Inside Out, In Real Life (A Conversation with Chase Counts)

This week, Alison and Chris sit down with Chase Counts, LPC, founder of Peak Counseling in Tulsa, for a powerful conversation about parts work in therapy—an approach that helps us recognize and relate to the many different “parts” of ourselves. If you’ve ever seen the movie Inside Out, you’ve already met the idea: joy, sadness, anger, fear—all with a seat at the table. From self-critics to protectors to the parts of us that just want to be seen, Chase breaks down how getting to know these internal dynamics can bring clarity, compassion, and healing. This episode is a thoughtful and accessible look at the ways we make sense of ourselves—and how honoring our inner world can transform the way we show up in life.More about "Parts Work" from Chase: Parts work is a compassionate, non-pathological approach to therapy that views all thoughts, feelings, and behaviors as coming from different “parts” within us—each with its own perspective and purpose. Rather than labeling these parts as problems or symptoms, parts work helps individuals understand and heal internal conflicts by building curiosity, connection, and self-leadership. It honors the wholeness of a person and sees even the most challenging behaviors as protective or adaptive responses rooted in past experiences.
