Michael Prelaske is a high school social studies teacher in Wake County, NC, a Graduate Research Assistant at NC State, and founder of 1347 Games, where he designs immersive, multiplayer simulations for classroom learning. His work challenges the traditional model of passive instruction by exploring how digital game-based learning can improve engagement, deepen understanding, and increase long-term retention.Michael’s research focuses on the efficacy of game-based instruction, particularly how well knowledge transfers beyond the game environment and sticks with students over time. He is especially interested in how interactive systems can make abstract or complex content—like global trade, historical decision-making, and social systems—more tangible and meaningful for adolescents. Before entering the classroom, Michael served as a Community Youth Development Officer in Mongolia with the Peace Corps, an experience that continues to shape his perspective on education, culture, and access. He has since earned multiple Teacher of the Year recognitions in North Carolina and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Learning Sciences at North Carolina State University.Through both his research and his company, Michael is working to redefine what rigorous, engaging learning can look like in modern classrooms—moving beyond memorization toward experiences that students can think with.Digital Gaming Based Learning (DGBL) technology as a whole – what is, when did it start to take shape and be recognized as a tool for students - has the potential to revolutionize how students learn by making education more interactive, immersive, and relevant to their lives. (00:01:31-00:20:37) - His background – when did he start to take an interest in this type of learning, Digital Gaming Based Learning (DGBL) as a whole. The level of engagement amongst students who are participating in DGBL classes.(00:47:54-00:52:49) - Five-year outlook or maybe sooner - do you see this type of learning being utilized in other subjects – making math or algebra more immersive, and maybe even branching into the corporate world, during an orientation period for new hires at a company – what other possibilities are out there?(00:52:51) – The stuff that matters.Subscribe and like, rate and review. Stuff that Matters, Episode 24 - Richard Sandoval

Richard Sandoval is the Senior Director of Community Programs at Hope Incorporated. That doesn’t even come close to describing who he is and what he’s about. Richard grew up in a large family in Arizona and was subjected to a drug dealing father as a child. Upon graduating high school, he enlisted in the marine core and served to deployments which began shortly after the events of 9/11. When he left the military in 2006, the traumas that he was faced with carried into his personal life went undiagnosed and untreated for several years. He found Hope Incorporated in 2012 after his fifth time in rehab, which helped him stay clean and get his life on track. Most people hit rock bottom and often aren’t able to get back up. Richard was. Unlike a lot of people, Richard endured a second rock-bottom three years ago and relapsed after nearly 10 years of staying clean and sober. But the folks at Hope Incorporated stayed committed to Richard and were there for him every step of the way through the power of peer support. Richard continues to work on himself, is a father of two, is working towards his MBA and shares his story as much as he can. His passion, empathy, self-awareness and gratitude is impeccable. Episode, 23 - Saul Malek, Gambling Addiction, Mental Health,

We talk to Saul Malek - Storyteller & promoter of mental health, resilience & hope, sharing lessons from his journey with gambling addiction through public speaking. Saul was, like many, a big sports fan. As a college student, he was on the radio calling games, followed teams, enjoyed watching and rooting for outcomes. However, when he was introduced to daily fantasy sports and gambling websites in 2017, he started looking at sports much differently. His interest slowly turned into a hobby before ultimately turning into an obsession and an addiction. He went through a series of emotions when he wasn’t betting on games, transferred money from different bank accounts, was asking for money and putting his time and funds into gambling. He began to lose a grip of who he was as a person and realized he had lost touch with reality. Weather, politics, the outside world didn’t matter to Saul. He had been using several bookies to place wagers on every sport imaginable. It consumed his mind and was his main priority 24/7. Like drug and alcohol addiction, he needed help and he was able to get that help, but still speaks to a therapist, his sponsor, attends meetings and does what he can to avoid gambling. It’s challenge and a struggle. Like any addiction, gambling addiction can completely change and destroy a life. Saul is still paying off the debts he accrued through various bookies. (00:02:25-00:29:57) How he got into gambling, his initial introduction, his low points and when he realized he had a problem. Brandon wasn’t always into politics, however. Up until a few years ago, he was enjoying a career full of extensive sales and business experience, when tragedy struck his family, as his son, Gavin, took his own life as a teen. It was a complex situation, which Brandon outlines some of early on in this episode, but it sparked something within Brandon. With the help and motivation of his wife, he set out to make changes with the goal of preventing the same thing that happened to his son from happening to more youth. He finally decided to run for the city council in 2020 during the pandemic, and once he was elected, Brandon has been leading with his passion and, as Matt so eloquently put it, his Get Stuff Done attitude. He passed Gavin’s Law early on in his freshman year on the House of Representatives, which he explains to us. He also started a non-profit in his sons honor called Less Than Three. He entered into the foster care system as a child and later became diagnosed with bipolar disorder and depression as a teen. Jenn Drummond was living a rather successful and normal life as a business owner and mom. Until a horrific car accident in 2018 changed everything. She set out to change who she was and how she lived her life. With the help and motivation of her kids, she set several goals for herself living a new and improved life, one of which was to start climbing mountains.
