Truly Significant celebrates Luz Maria Mack- Mother, Wife, Dominican, Thought Leader, Author, Advocate
Luz Maria Mack is a Truly Significant™ thought leader because she is doing something larger than writing children’s books: she is helping people understand that identity, belonging, and cultural memory are built through the stories we choose to tell—and the stories we choose not to leave out.Luz's significance through six dimensions: 1. She turns representation into belonging Luz's work isn't representation for representation's sake. Her central question is essentially: “Does a child see themselves in the story?” Her Dominican and Afro-Caribbean children's literature gives young readers cultural mirrors while also giving other children windows into experiences different from their own.The Secret of the Plátano, for example, was selected by Bank Street College of Education among its Best Children's Picture Books of 2023. That fits the Truly Significant lens beautifully: Significance happens when someone feels seen, valued, and connected because you were willing to tell the story. 2. Her "side quest" became a mission This is perhaps the strongest connection to Side Quests to Significance. Luz's path wasn't simply, “I want to become a famous author.” Her motherhood, cultural experience, professional life and encounters with the publishing world led her toward a creative calling that answered a need she saw around her.She has described moving beyond waiting for publisher approval and instead creating stories rooted in her community. That's a classic Side Quest: Curiosity → Need → Action → Significance. She didn't necessarily set out to build a cultural platform. She followed a need—and the need revealed the mission. 3. She understands that stories can preserve culture Luz isn't merely entertaining children. She is preserving pieces of Dominican and Caribbean culture for another generation. Her books explore language, music, family, heritage and identity. Her animated adaptation of ¡Pequeña María descubre su baile! won recognition at Bridge Fest and was subsequently featured on PBS. She also collaborated with Disney's Storybook Art Team on Family Is Everything, inspired by Encanto. That makes her work especially significant because culture disappears when nobody takes responsibility for passing it forward. 4. She has expanded from storyteller to "story ecosystem" builder This may be her most important evolution. Luz has moved from telling her own stories to creating platforms for other people to tell theirs. Her 2026 podcast, The Missing Book, focuses on overlooked stories and unheard voices. She interviews authors, illustrators, educators, publishers, literacy advocates and other creatives—not simply about their books, but about the people, experiences and identities behind those books. That's a profound distinction. An author creates a story.A thought leader creates space for stories. Luz is increasingly doing the latter.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Truly Significant honors Bob Cowsill and The Cowsills..... Music preserves emotion
In our interview of Bob Cowsill (yes…THE Cowsills) he reminded us that history and music aren't really about dates. It's about people. About moments. About ordinary lives interrupted by extraordinary memories centered around a special song.Listen to this provocative conversation and you will learn that The Cowsills were one of America's first family bands. You will hear the expected stories about hit records, Ed Sullivan Show, just three years after the Beatles debut, and the glory days of rock and roll. What stayed with me wasn't the history. It was the humanity. Bob shared a story that has lingered with me.During one concert, he noticed an elderly gentleman sitting in the front row with tears streaming down his face as The Cowsills began performing The Rain, the Park and Other Things. (Sing along….I love the flower girl) After the show, the man's daughter explained why. Her father had been a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. When his helicopter was shot down behind enemy lines, his gunner's transistor radio became trapped, endlessly replaying that very song. As he struggled to survive, the melody became forever intertwined with one of the most terrifying moments of his life. Decades later, hearing the song live transported him instantly back to that jungle. That is the mysterious power of music. A three-minute song can carry a lifetime.Buy Cowsills' music, follow them on tour and relive a memorable yester-year. ost of us will never write a hit song, but every one of us is composing memories.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

The singular most RAW, vulnerable conversation with Dana Killion, author of Becoming Unbreakable.
Of all the awful things that happened to Dana Killion, from the loss of her son, parents and a divorce, she shows such courage, forward thinking and resilience. From this conversation, learn that relief and healing are not the same. You are not healed if you are still bitter and angry. Think about closure. Something happened to you. God is not going to come down and tell you this was meant to be. Discover how to become UNSTUCK. Answer the WHY. Buy the book Becoming Unmistakeable wherever books are sold. Danakillion.com is her website. She inspires us to MOVE on. The Choice is Ours.Read More!Unbreakable. That’s a big ask. It’s bigger than what we view as healed, and it’s beyond mere survival. We deserve and are worthy of more than just relief.Written in blisteringly unflinching prose, Becoming Unbreakable is simultaneously a companion to therapy, a warm-up to deeper healing, and a breathtaking dissection of the traumas that underline our lives—but which don’t have to define us.Within an eight-year period, author Dana Killion broke free from an addictive marriage with a husband who harbored a secret life, suffered the loss of both of her parents, and endured the death of her oldest son from fentanyl. Emerging and finding a way through, despite the ossifying effects of grief, Killion transformed her life and became unbreakable. Her process for this becoming is carefully detailed, providing guidance, support, and, crucially, a path forward. In sharing her story and the framework of her metamorphosis, Killion addresses foundational questions that get to the heart of our traumatic responses: Why do some of us become hollow shells of the person we were, even after therapy? How do some of us process our grief more smoothly and carry on? How do we become someone scarred, but not forever broken?Trauma doesn’t have to win. The choice is ours.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

True Significance of Trusting Others with Legendary Songwriter Mark James....Suspicious Minds
On today's show, we honor the late, great Mark James. He was one of America's great songwriters with Suspicious Minds, Hooked on a Feeling and Always on My Mind. Most people hear Suspicious Minds and think of Elvis Presley. I hear something much deeper. I hear songwriter Mark James describing one of the greatest destroyers of significance: the absence of trust. "We're caught in a trap. I can't walk out because I love you too much, baby..." Those lyrics aren't about romance as much as they're about relationships of every kind. Marriages. Friendships. Business partnerships. Families. Communities. Even our relationship with ourselves. When trust disappears, everyone becomes a detective. Every text is analyzed.Every silence becomes suspicious.Every delay has a hidden meaning.Every conversation feels like a courtroom instead of a kitchen table. It's exhausting. Significance Is Built on Trust Over the past 4,100 conversations on Success Made to Last and Truly Significant, I've noticed something remarkable. The people who become truly significant don't necessarily have the highest IQ, the biggest platform, or the most impressive résumé. They become significant because people trust them. Trust is the invisible currency of every meaningful life. It is earned one promise at a time. One conversation at a time. One act of integrity at a time. When trust grows, dreams grow. Great Communication Builds Great Dreams Mark James wrote: "Why can't you see what you're doing to me?" How many dreams have died because no one was willing—or able—to have one honest conversation? Great communication isn't about winning an argument. It's about understanding another heart. Trust me, the strongest marriages aren't built by people who never disagree. Neither are the strongest companies. They aren't built by leaders who never make mistakes. The deepest friendships aren't built by people who always get it right. They're built by people who keep talking. Who keep listening. Who choose curiosity over assumption. Who ask before accusing. Communication is the bridge that carries trust from one heart to another.Don't Let Old Friends Become Strangers One lyric has always stopped me in my tracks: "Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?" How tragic when someone who once knew your heart begins to question your motives. Old friends are one of life's greatest treasures. They remember who you were before success. They celebrate you without needing anything in return. They know your stories, your scars, your victories, and your dreams. Don't let distance, busyness, or misunderstanding quietly erase decades of friendship. Call someone. Write the note. Take the trip. Relationships rarely end because of one dramatic moment. More often, they slowly drift apart through neglect.Crying and Trying One of my favorite lines in the song is beautifully simple: "We've got to let our love survive... or dry the tears from your eyes." Life will give us plenty of reasons to cry. Dreams sometimes disappoint. People misunderstand us. Trust gets broken. Words hurt, but significance isn't found in pretending life is easy. It's found in crying... and then trying again. Trying to forgive. Trying to rebuild. Trying to listen. Trying to believe the best. Trying to become the kind of person others can trust. stronger?Significance isn't built by perfect people. It's built by trustworthy people. And trust doesn't begin with them. It begins with us. Here's to fewer suspicious minds… ...and more significant lives.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

TrulySignificant.com honors Dave Garrison, author of The Buy In Advantage- Corporate culture guru
Dave Garrison believes that the greatest competitive advantage is not technology, capital, or even strategy—it is human commitment. His book, The Buy-In Advantage, demonstrates that extraordinary organizations are built when people don't merely comply with a vision—they own it.While many executives focus on directing people, Garrison teaches leaders to create environments where employees become co-authors of success. Vision to Lead Garrison's vision is simple but transformational: People support what they help create. Instead of asking, "How do I get people to follow me?" he asks, "How do I build an organization where everyone becomes a leader?" That shift creates cultures where innovation, accountability, and trust flourish. Mission to Make a Difference Throughout his executive career and advisory work, Garrison has focused on helping organizations:Build cultures of ownership rather than compliance.Replace fear with trust.Develop leaders at every level.Align purpose with performance.Create organizations where people actually enjoy coming to work. His mission extends beyond increasing profits. He seeks to improve people's daily work lives by helping them experience meaning, contribution, and shared success. Ecosystem Builder Great leaders don't simply create followers—they create ecosystems where others succeed. Garrison's influence has spread through:CEOs who adopt collaborative leadership practices.Executive teams that learn to make better decisions together.Organizations that improve employee engagement.Leadership communities that multiply his ideas through mentoring and teaching. His impact grows exponentially because every leader he equips influences hundreds—or thousands—of others. Through the Lens of Truly Significant Dave Garrison embodies several principles of true significance:Humility over ego — Leadership is about serving the team rather than elevating oneself.Purpose over position — Influence comes from earning trust, not exercising authority.Contribution over control — Success is measured by how many leaders you develop.Legacy over quarterly results — Culture outlives strategy. His Side Quest is reclaiming the human side of leadership. Rather than viewing leadership as command and control, he has dedicated his career to helping leaders discover that their highest calling is creating workplaces where people feel valued, heard, and empowered. That pursuit has become far more than management consulting—it has become a movement toward more meaningful organizations. Why does Dave Garrison matter today In an era marked by burnout, disengagement, and rapid technological change, Garrison's message is especially timely:Organizations will still rise or fall based on whether people choose to bring their hearts, creativity, and commitment to the mission. Dave reminds us that the most enduring organizations are built not by brilliant strategies alone, but by leaders who inspire genuine buy-in.A Truly Significant takeaway: "Success happens when people work for you. Significance happens when people believe with you."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Truly Significant Texans honors John Arthur Martinez, singer, songwriter, musician extraordinaire
TrulySignificant.com honors a Texas legend today with John Arthur Martinez. About John: Before he became a nationally known singer-songwriter, Martinez dreamed of playing professional tennis. A devastating knee injury ended that dream. Instead of allowing disappointment to define him, he picked up a guitar and redirected his competitive spirit into songwriting. That pivot is the essence of significance—not merely succeeding, but transforming loss into service through one's gifts. He represents the best of Texas' cultural crossroads. Texas has always been a meeting place of traditions, and Martinez embodies that heritage. His music naturally blends country, Western swing, Mexican-American influences, and singer-songwriter storytelling without forcing any of them. He has become a musical bridge between Anglo and Hispanic audiences, reminding Texans that our greatest strength is often found where cultures meet rather than where they divide. He chose songwriting over celebrity. Many people remember him as the runner-up on the first season of Nashville Star. But television wasn't his legacy. His legacy has been decades of:Writing hundreds of songs.Recording more than a dozen albums.Performing everywhere from Texas dance halls to the Grand Ole Opry.Continuing to tour long after reality television faded from public attention. That is the difference between being famous and being significant. His songs have served other artists. One mark of a truly significant songwriter is that others choose to sing your work. Martinez co-wrote "Seguro Que Hell Yes," which was recorded by Flaco Jiménez and Raul Malo, contributing to a Grammy-winning project. Alan Jackson also recorded the song. Great songwriters don't simply perform—they create music that lives through other voices. He invests in the next generation.Perhaps the most "Truly Significant" aspect of his career is his commitment to young musicians. Martinez founded FiestaJAM, using music not merely to entertain but to raise money for music education programs in the Texas Hill Country. That shifts the focus from "Look what I've accomplished" to "Look what others can become." He carries Texas wherever he performs. Whether singing in Europe, Nashville, or a small Texas town, Martinez's music always returns to the landscapes, people, and values of Texas. His storytelling reflects ranches, dance halls, front porches, highways, and family—preserving a culture that younger generations can still recognize and appreciate. Even NASA found room for his music. One of Martinez's songs, "Making Good Time," accompanied astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Few Texas songwriters can say their music has literally orbited the Earth. It's a fitting symbol: authentic Texas stories reaching beyond Texas itself. We talk about the upcoming songwriter festival in Marble Falls happening in July. Truly Significant honors Hector Saldana, founding member of the Krayolas and Music Curator at Wittliff Museum
There's only ONE Hector Saldana. Founding member of The Krayolas. Museum curator at the world class Wittliff Museum at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. Hector spent more than two decades telling the stories that many mainstream media outlets overlooked—Tejano musicians, conjunto pioneers, Chicano artists, Texas songwriters, and the cultural movements that shaped South Texas. He earned national journalism awards for his feature writing and coverage of San Antonio's music scene. What makes him Truly Significant is that he evolved from reporter to preservationist. In 2017, he was selected as the first curator of the Texas Music Collection at The Wittliff Collections, where his mission became preserving the stories, photographs, recordings, and artifacts of Texas music for future generations. That is a classic Side Quest story. A young reporter could have spent an entire career covering breaking news. Instead, Saldaña followed his curiosity into music history, Texas culture, and the people behind the songs.Over time, that side interest became a calling. His Side Quest became his significance. Several themes stand out:He Preserved Voices Before They Disappeared. Saldaña documented legends such as Flaco Jiménez, Augie Meyers, and countless regional artists whose stories might otherwise have been lost. His work often focused on the cultural significance behind the music, not just the performers themselves. He Built Bridges Between Cultures His reporting connected country music, rock and roll, Tejano, conjunto, and Mexican-American traditions. He helped Texans understand that these were not separate stories but chapters of the same Texas story. He Turned Curiosity Into Stewardship Many people collect information. Few become caretakers of an entire cultural legacy. As curator, he moved from reporting history to protecting it. A Truly Significant Reflection He thought he was covering concerts. He thought he was interviewing musicians. He thought he was writing newspaper stories. But all along, Hector Saldaña was preserving the soundtrack of Texas. And years later, when the songs faded and the musicians passed on, the stories remained. Because one curious journalist decided they mattered. That is significance. Not fame. Not headlines. Not bylines. But becoming the trusted keeper of a culture's memory. And that's why Hector Saldaña belongs as a Truly Significant Texan.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Truly Significant honors Texas' Cultural Queen- Leslie Collier- owner of W.R. Dallas Furniture and Austin Anthropologist
When you hear the words "Texas Soul," what comes to mind? Listen to Leslie Collier's definition that includes grit, toughness, kindness, and independent......Introducing Leslie Collier through the lens of Truly Significant Texans, one can argue that Leslie is less a furniture executive and more a cultural anthropologist of Texas. What makes her unique is that she sits at the intersection of three powerful forces: music, relationships, and storytelling. Leslie has spent decades preserving and interpreting Texas culture not from a university classroom, but from the showroom floor of W.R. Dallas. Furniture, after all, is where families gather, musicians tell stories, business leaders build friendships, and communities pass traditions from one generation to the next. Her musical prowess gives her access to the heartbeat of Texas. Musicians are often the first historians of a culture. Through relationships with artists, songwriters, performers, promoters, and cultural leaders, Leslie has developed a unique understanding of what makes Texas different from anywhere else. She understands that a song often reveals more about a people than a census report ever could. Her extensive network is equally important. Over the years she has become a trusted connector among artists, business leaders, ranchers, philanthropists, educators, and civic leaders.Like a true anthropologist, she has observed how these communities interact and has helped preserve the traditions, values, and stories that define Texas. The furniture business itself is a form of cultural preservation. W.R. Dallas has been part of Texas homes, ranches, lodges, and gathering places for generations. Through that work, Leslie has seen firsthand how Texans live, celebrate, grieve, entertain, and pass along family legacies. The company's history provides a living window into Texas culture and heritage. What makes Leslie truly significant is that she doesn't merely study Texas culture—she helps sustain it. She champions Texas music, celebrates Texas craftsmanship, promotes Texas history, and connects people who might otherwise never meet. In doing so, she serves as both curator and storyteller of the Texas experience.A fitting description might be: "Leslie Collier is Texas' cultural anthropologist—not because she earned the title in a classroom, but because she has spent a lifetime listening to the music, preserving the stories, connecting the people, and furnishing the gathering places where Texas culture comes alive." That is a rare form of significance. She helps Texans remember who they are.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Truly Significant with Dr. Nicole Alioto....transforming schools proactively measuring "the right data"
Dr. Nicole Alioto, Social Psychologists, looks at what makes school districts transformative, changing the lives of the students and improving our culture. Dr. Alioto, educator, data expert and author of You Can Measure Anything!: An Educator’s Guide to Measuring What Is Hard to Define (May 2026), argues that the problem is not a lack of data. It’s that schools often try to measure these outcomes before clearly defining what they actually mean. She explains: "Morale" means something different to a first-year teacher, a veteran educator, and a building principal. "Trust" looks different in a high-performing school and one in crisis. Until a district builds a shared definition — one developed with input from the people the data are supposed to represent — any survey it runs is measuring something. Just not necessarily the thing it thinks it’s measuring.Enjoy this insightful conversation on a truly significant opportunity to shape our future generations.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Truly Significant Honors Von Miller...future NFL Hall of Famer and founder of Greener Pastures
Von Miller is known around the world as a Super Bowl champion, but his significance extends far beyond football. Raised in DeSoto, Texas, and a graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in Poultry Science, Miller has combined his passion for agriculture, entrepreneurship, and service to others into a life that exemplifies true significance. One of his greatest contributions is Von's Vision, the nonprofit foundation he established to provide eye care and corrective eyewear to children from low-income families. Inspired by his own childhood experiences with poor vision and the challenges that came with wearing glasses, Miller created a program that helps children see clearly, succeed in school, and gain confidence. Since its founding, Von's Vision has provided more than $6 million in eye care and eyewear to over 10,000 students across the United States. Miller's commitment to agriculture is equally impressive.Long before he became an NFL superstar, he developed a passion for poultry science at Texas A&M. Today, that passion lives on through Greener Pastures Chicken, a company he founded to promote pasture-raised poultry, regenerative agriculture, animal welfare, and a healthier food system. Greener Pastures reflects Miller's belief that farming should honor both the land and the animals while producing high-quality food for consumers. What makes Von Miller truly significant is that he has leveraged fame and success not for personal gain alone, but to improve lives. Through Von's Vision, he helps children see a brighter future. Through Greener Pastures, he champions responsible agriculture and sustainable farming practices. His life demonstrates that true success is measured not by trophies won, but by lives lifted. Truly Significant Texans in Agriculture Citation: "Von Miller embodies the spirit of Texas agriculture and service. Whether helping thousands of children see clearly through Von's Vision or promoting responsible farming through Greener Pastures Chicken, he reminds us that significance is found when our talents, passions, and resources are used to benefit others."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Truly Significant honors Steve Carlis, pioneer in tapping into human potential of Grant Cordone and Mel Robbins
Steve Carlis can be viewed as a Truly Significant pioneer because the highest form of significance is not just building brands—it is seeing greatness in people before the world does. That is a rare gift. It means recognizing talent in its early, unfinished stages and helping it become influence, impact, and legacy. Why That Matters: Many people can judge performance after success is obvious.Very few can identify potential before the applause begins. That kind of vision requires:Discernment – noticing gifts others overlookPattern recognition – seeing future momentum in present behaviorCourage – betting on people earlyStewardship – helping talent grow, not just using itBelief – lending confidence until the person owns it themselvesThat is where significance begins. Through the lens of talent with leaders and communicators like Grant Cardone and Mel Robbins, the common thread is not just fame—it is human potential expressed at scale. To recognize figures like these early or help amplify their gifts means seeing:the communicator before the crowd arrivedthe message before it became movementthe discipline behind the brandthe hunger behind the headlinesThat is different from marketing. That is insight. A Success mentality asks “What did you build?”Significance asks:“Who did you lift?” If Steve Carlis has consistently identified talent, opened doors, and helped people maximize their gifts, then his real legacy is not media alone—it is the multiplication of lives and voices he helped elevate. Steve Carlis is significant not merely because he recognized stars, but because he understood a timeless truth: When you see human potential clearly—and act on it—you change futures. Truly Significant Texans honors Bob Schneider, prolific Austin songwriter and musician. He moved to Live Music Capital in 1989 and owes his significance to his Dad. Considering him a genius, his Dad was once an opera singer and could hear a song once and know the lyrics. Enjoy hearing about Bob's influences ranging from Tom Waits, Paul Simon, Queen and The Beatles. Hear about "how the sausage is made" meaning how songs are written, structured and finished. It includes coming up with a phrase, sending to fellow songwriters and forcing a deadline to finish. "You are always starting over to write something. Writing something good may even hinder you in a way. Consider Bridge Over Troubled Water?" Bob Schneider still has something to prove and you will know why.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.
