Sunday Edition Presents: THE PRACTICE OF HAPPY CONVERSATION FOUR PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Over the past four weeks, The Practice of Happy has explored happiness from several different directions. What is happiness? How do we recognize it? How can happiness exist alongside grief, anger, frustration, fear, disappointment, joy, hope, excitement and everything else that makes up a full emotional life? How do relationships, expectations, outside influences, internal reactions and the voices in our own heads shape the way we experience a moment? And perhaps most importantly, what do we actually do with all of that? In this final conversation, we move from discussion into practice. ❤️🧠🪞🗺️ Anthony Corona is joined by panelists Judy, Mark, Lorna and Gabriel for a practical exploration of the exercises, checklists and internal conversations developed throughout this series. Special thanks to Holly for taking care of the recording and helping keep everything moving behind the scenes. 🎙️❤️ This conversation is built around one important understanding. No two people are the same. These exercises are not rules. They are not written in stone. They are not instructions for the right way to feel, think, react or respond. They are a roadmap. A set of guidelines. A collection of tools you can adapt, change, combine, simplify or completely reshape to form your own internal checklist and your own conversations. The goal is not uniformity. The goal is awareness. To create a little more room between reaction and choice. To better understand what we are feeling. To recognize what may be influencing us. To decide what we actually want. And then to consider what response might move us closer to that outcome. During this conversation, we explore several practical concepts and exercises. 🪞 THE MIRROR AND THE MAP We begin by asking one of the largest questions possible. Who am I? Using 4, 2, 6 breathing as a reset, we look at the emotional and practical skills that are already working, the areas we may want to strengthen, the things that may be blocking us and the qualities we know to be good and true about ourselves. Then we create our own internal mirror statement. A personal mantra. Something honest. Something useful. Something that belongs entirely to us. 🧠 THE INTERNAL CONVERSATION Sometimes there is more than one voice responding to what is happening. Anger. Fear. Sadness. Frustration. Instinct. Experience. Hope. Need. Expectation. The goal is not to silence any of them. Instead, we listen. We identify the strongest voice. We ask whether the loudest voice is actually capable of leading. Then we create an impartial internal leader who can hear the full conversation and help decide what deserves attention, what can wait and what action, if any, should come next. 😊 THE EMOTIONAL TABLE Inspired by the concept behind Inside Out, we imagine our emotions taking seats around an internal table. Who grabbed the biggest chair? Who is dominating the room? Who keeps interrupting? Who has been ignored? Who have we refused to invite? Each emotion gets a voice. Each emotion may get a vote. But no single emotion automatically gets control. The most important person eventually takes the head of the table. You. 🦮 INSIDE OUT AND THE GUIDE DOG DENIAL We bring the emotional table into a real world disability scenario. A Guide Dog handler waits for an Uber. The driver arrives. The driver says no dogs. The handler explains that this is a trained Guide Dog. The driver repeats no dogs and pulls away. Now what? Anger may show up. Frustration may arrive. Fear. Disappointment. Embarrassment. Determination. Problem solving. Maybe several at once. The exercise asks whether Anger can sit beside Reason. Whether Fear can sit beside Confidence. Whether Frustration can sit beside Problem Solving. Whether disappointment can exist alongside the memory of the wonderful evening that came before the denial. Again, the goal is not to remove emotion. It is to put emotion into proportion. 📋 THE THREE CHECKLISTS We also bring together three practical inventories designed to help slow down the progression between feeling, reaction and action. The Emotional Inventory asks. What am I feeling? Why am I feeling it? What is contributing to it? What may be inflaming it? Which feeling is strongest? Which feeling may actually deserve the most attention? The Internal Behavior Inventory asks. What is my immediate reaction? What happens if I wait five minutes? Ten minutes? Overnight? Am I reacting to what actually happened or to what I think happened? Does my proposed response support the outcome I actually want? And what response will I still feel comfortable owning tomorrow? The Influence and Manipulation Inventory asks us to look at the forces around us and within us. What outside factors are shaping how I feel? What story am I telling myself? What assumptions am I making? What do I want? What might someone else want? Are those motivations compatible? Can I influence the situation in a more constructive direction? And ultimately. What influence do I want to have on what happens next? 💬 THE ACCESSIBILITY POST The conversation begins and ends with the same scenario. You post about an accessibility problem. Most responses are helpful. Two are sarcastic, passive aggressive or dismissive. Suddenly those two comments are taking up more emotional space than everything else. We capture the initial reaction. Then we work through the exercises and concepts. At the end, we return to the same situation and ask. What do I feel now? What is influencing me? What do I want? What would I do? Did anything change? Maybe it did. Maybe it did not. Neither answer is the goal. The goal is noticing whether understanding ourselves more clearly changes what happens between reaction and choice. THE PRACTICE OF HAPPY The Practice of Happy is not about pretending everything is wonderful. It is not about suppressing anger, sadness, frustration, disappointment, fear or grief. It is about becoming more aware of what happens between emotion and action. Feeling. Understanding. Pausing. Sorting. Choosing. Responding. Sometimes we may write these answers down. Sometimes we may talk them through with someone we trust. Sometimes the entire process may happen inside our own heads while walking the dog, sitting in traffic, lying in bed or staring at a text message we probably should not answer quite yet. The more often we practice the process, the more familiar it becomes. And perhaps that is where the word practice matters most. Happy is not necessarily a permanent destination. Sometimes happy is something we make room for by understanding everything else already in the room. A collection of concepts, exercises, questions and practical prompts created through The Practice of Happy series and presented by the Sunday Edition Family of Podcasts and Digital Media Content Services. This recording brings together the exercises and guided questions explored throughout our final conversation and places them in one practical companion resource. Explore the responses. Spend more time where the discussion takes you. The goal is not to arrive at the same answer. This Sunday on Sunday Edition, I sit down with Jennifer Frederick for an open, candid and deeply personal conversation about losing sight in midlife, navigating the maze of services available to newly blind adults, working through grief and frustration, finding the right balance between accepting help and reclaiming independence, and ultimately beginning to come out the other side. Jennifer Frederick is a midlife professional turned disability rights advocate from New York’s Capital Region. After a career in insurance and corporate emergency communications, Jennifer lost most of her vision in her early forties as a result of diabetic retinopathy. She had to rebuild. Today, Jennifer uses that lived experience as a blind peer supporter, helping other adults navigate benefits, services and the emotional realities that can accompany losing sight. During our conversation, Jennifer is remarkably open about the struggles. The uncertainty. The frustration. The grief. The practical challenges of figuring out which services exist and how to access them. And the sometimes complicated process of learning how to live differently without allowing blindness to become the entirety of who you are. But we also talk about strength. Where do you find it when the life you expected suddenly looks very different? How do you keep moving when you are still grieving what you lost? And eventually, how do you take everything you learned while finding your own way and use it to make someone else’s road a little easier? That last question is especially important to Jennifer. She wants to pay it forward. And that may be where this conversation leads next. In Conversation Two, we explored the reality that joy, sadness, anger, grief, gratitude and happiness can all exist in the same heart at the same time. This time, we asked a different question. What happens to our practice of happy when the outside world gets involved? Because none of us practices happy in a vacuum. Throughout this candid and wide ranging conversation, the panel explores the people, circumstances and unexpected moments that can influence our emotional lives. A thirty second interaction with one person can unexpectedly brighten an entire day. Another thirty second interaction can leave us irritated for hours. Why? How much power do external influences actually have over our happiness? How much power do we give them? How much should we give them? And when something or someone disrupts our happiness, how do we find our way back without pretending the frustration, anger, disappointment or hurt never happened? As always, The Practice of Happy is not a lecture, a class or a group of people claiming to have figured everything out. It is a conversation. It is people sharing experiences, challenging themselves and one another, laughing, questioning assumptions and continuing to explore what practicing happy actually looks like in real life. We also address some of the bumps along the road. Amos acknowledges that mistakes have been made in communication and in some presentations of Glide. We talk about those moments, the concerns they created, how they were addressed, and the importance of continuing to listen when the community raises questions. Throughout our conversation, Amos is transparent about something equally important. What Glide is. And what Glide is not. There is a clear vision for what users should expect from the device being delivered, but there are also things people should absolutely not expect it to do right now. We talk about those distinctions, what capabilities are expected sooner, what may come later, and why managing expectations matters when excitement surrounding new technology begins racing ahead of the technology itself. 🌟 THE PRACTICE OF HAPPY 🌟 Conversation Two Joy, Happiness, and the Human Heart A Sunday Edition Special Conversation Series What if happiness and sadness do not have to take turns? What if grief can have its chair, frustration can have its chair, anger can have its chair, and joy can still walk into the room and find a place to sit? In Conversation Two of The Practice of Happy, we continued the journey we began with Choosing Happy and Letting Happy Happen and moved deeper into the complicated, beautiful, sometimes contradictory territory of the human heart. Anthony was joined by Gabriel, Lorna, Mark, Judy, and new friend Renee for a thoughtful, personal, and wonderfully honest conversation about happiness, joy, gratitude, grief, frustration, emotional honesty, and our ability to hold more than one feeling at the same time. Each person brought a different perspective to the questions being asked, weaving personal experiences, stories, reflections, and feelings from their own lives into the larger conversation. We began by asking what happiness and joy actually mean. Are they the same thing? Are they different? Can we choose them? Can we nurture them? Or is part of the practice simply learning to recognize them when they arrive? From there, the conversation moved into what we called the AND of the human heart. Can we be happy AND sad? Grateful AND frustrated? Grieving AND joyful? Can laughter exist in the middle of loss? Can something beautiful happen during an incredibly difficult day without diminishing the difficulty of that day? And why do we sometimes feel guilty when happiness manages to find us during a season when we believe we are supposed to be feeling something else? That brought us to emotional honesty and an important possibility. Maybe choosing happy does not require denying anything else. Maybe sadness does not have to leave before joy is allowed inside. Maybe acknowledging anger, grief, fear, disappointment, and frustration is not a failure of the practice. Maybe that honesty is part of the practice. We also explored what it means to recognize and nurture happiness without grabbing onto it, manufacturing positivity, or demanding that happiness somehow fix everything else. Can we become better at noticing the smaller moments? Can we recognize happiness while it is happening instead of realizing hours, days, or even years later that it had been there all along? There were far too many nuggets of wisdom in this conversation to pull out only a handful without potentially slighting some of the extraordinary thoughts that were shared. So we will not try. This is a conversation worth experiencing. What we can say is that Conversation Two became a natural extension of our first gathering and, perhaps without any of us deliberately planning it, the perfect bridge into where we are headed next. Because Conversation One gave us two ideas. Choosing happy. Letting happy happen. Conversation Two may have given us a third. Noticing happy. I am sad AND something just made me laugh. I am frustrated AND I am also grateful. I am grieving AND I just experienced joy. I am struggling AND something beautiful happened today. Both things can be true. Perhaps joy does not need the whole room. Perhaps it simply needs us to notice when it walks in. And that brings us directly to Conversation Three. Next week, we turn our attention outward and ask what happens when happy goes sideways. What happens when other people, relationships, expectations, circumstances, accessibility, barriers, validation, and the world around us begin influencing where we believe our happiness should come from? We will explore dependence and interdependence, people pleasing, boundaries, validation, accessibility, independence, and what happens when we give something outside ourselves too much responsibility for what happens inside us. The Practice of Happy is not a lecture. It is not a prescription. And it certainly is not an instruction manual for being happy. It is a conversation. One that we hope keeps growing. One that we hope you will continue having with us. And perhaps, after listening to this conversation, you will ask yourself the same question we used to close the evening. Do We Question God? Dare we allow ourselves to be angry with God. By Anthony Corona I recently turned this reflection into an audio recording about anger, faith, and the world we are living in. It is about giving ourselves permission to grieve, to hurt, to question, and even to be angry. But it is also about understanding where that anger is really directed. Sometimes we believe we are angry with God when what we are actually angry with is a church, a religious institution, a leader, or an organization that claimed to speak for God and failed us. Those are not necessarily the same thing. Our churches, denominations, traditions, priests, pastors, teachers, and religious organizations can help us understand God. They can give us community, language, ritual, and connection. But they are still human filters. The institution is not God. That distinction feels especially important in the divided and often ugly world we are living in today. We see faith and scripture used to separate people, judge people, and sometimes justify cruelty toward people. I keep coming back to the Trinity. The Father reminds us that there is something greater than ourselves. The Son reminds us that God entered directly into human suffering, rejection, grief, and pain. The Holy Ghost reminds us that God is still moving within us and among us, far beyond the walls of any church or institution. Faith does not require us to deny our anger. We can feel it. We can name it. We can grieve. We can question. We can wrestle. But eventually, if we want to be free, we have to decide what we are going to do with it. For me, the answer is surrender. Give the anger to God. Not because anger is always wrong, but because carrying it forever can change us. It can isolate us. It can harden us. It can make us resemble the very things that wounded us. Maybe faith is not the absence of anger. Maybe faith is trusting God enough to hand Him our anger and believing that He can transform it into understanding, compassion, courage, forgiveness, peace, and love. It is about questioning God, questioning the institutions that claim to represent Him, and trying to find faith, hope, and connection in a world that seems increasingly determined to divide us. The Practice of Happy Conversation One: Choosing Happy What does happiness actually mean to us? Is happiness something that happens when life cooperates, or is it something we can choose, practice, notice, and make room for even while other emotions and experiences are present? In Conversation One of our four part series, The Practice of Happy, host Anthony is joined by panelists Lorna, Mark, Gabriel, and Judy, with special contributions from Dr. Lynn, for an intimate and wide ranging exploration of what happiness means to each of us and how we find our way toward it through everything else that makes us human. We began with personal reflections on happiness and quickly discovered just how different our relationships with the idea can be. Gabriel introduced us to the concept of choosing happy. Not choosing happiness instead of everything else we feel, but recognizing that happiness can sometimes be an intentional choice we make for ourselves. Anthony reflected on the idea of letting happy. What happens when we stop chasing happiness, defining it too narrowly, or waiting for permission to experience it, and simply allow happiness to find its place alongside everything else? Judy reminded us about the importance of feeling what we actually feel. Sadness does not have to be replaced with happiness. Anger does not need to be covered with positivity. Fear, frustration, grief, disappointment, and uncertainty deserve to be acknowledged rather than pushed aside in an attempt to manufacture some version of happy. Together, we discussed the possibility that more than one feeling, thought, or emotion can be true at exactly the same time. We can be grieving and grateful. We can be frustrated and hopeful. We can be overwhelmed and still experience a moment of joy. We can be disappointed by something happening in our lives and still recognize something else that makes us happy. Happiness does not necessarily require the absence of everything that is difficult. Mark offered another perspective, reflecting on how our jobs, advocacy, volunteerism, responsibilities, commitments, and the many roles we take on can create layers of buffering between ourselves and our happiness. Sometimes we become so busy doing, helping, producing, advocating, solving, and showing up that we forget to ask ourselves a deceptively simple question. What makes me happy? Throughout Conversation One, we kept returning to the idea of finding happy through the other emotions and situations we encounter every day rather than waiting for those emotions and situations to disappear. And we are only beginning. We closed our first conversation by moving from choosing happy and letting happy toward the larger idea at the heart of this series. Practicing happy. In Conversation Two, Happiness, Joy and the Space Between, we will explore happiness and joy. Are they the same thing? How are they different? Can one exist without the other? And what lives in that fascinating space between them? We also teased where the rest of our journey will take us. Conversation Three will explore what happens when life happens. Yes, there are CDs, DVDs, Starbucks dates, and a world before our entire lives lived inside our phones. 💿📱 I did a little editing and cleaning up, but I deliberately did not try to turn it into something I would write today. This is where I was as a writer and as a young gay man around 25 years ago. Reading it again all these years later surprised me. For all the little time capsules tucked inside it, I think the heart of the story has held up remarkably well. Mystery. Romance. That delicious uncertainty of wondering whether someone likes you. And the wonderfully ridiculous lengths we sometimes go to when we really want to make someone’s heart flutter. We also discussed areas where both organizations have opportunities to continue growing and evolving as they work to better serve an increasingly diverse blindness community. One of the most engaging conversations centered around the future. What if both organizations found ways to collaborate while maintaining their unique identities? We explored the possibility of hosting conventions in the same city during the same week, creating opportunities to share technology exhibit halls, vendor spaces, selected educational sessions, social events, and networking opportunities while preserving each organization's independent governance and culture. The conversation also examined what it truly means to create welcoming community spaces. We discussed the importance of fostering environments where people across the entire blindness spectrum feel respected, valued, heard, and included. From first time convention attendees to longtime members, from guide dog users to white cane travelers, from blind individuals to those with low vision, every voice deserves a place within our community. We spent time discussing the low vision experience and the importance of recognizing that blindness exists across a broad spectrum. Accessibility is not one size fits all, and meaningful inclusion requires understanding the different perspectives, needs, and experiences that people bring with them. Most importantly, this conversation was never about declaring winners or losers. It was about listening, learning, sharing ideas, and imagining how our community can become stronger by recognizing the strengths found throughout both organizations. Before vision loss, Austin chased adventure through skateboarding, snowboarding, motorcycles, travel and anything that pushed him beyond his comfort zone. What makes his story so compelling is that he never stopped chasing adventure. He simply found a new path forward. We will talk about the turning points along his journey, the challenges of adapting to vision loss, mental health, personal growth and how he transformed a life changing diagnosis into a mission of awareness, advocacy and connection. The film unfolds in a series of dreamlike chapters that blend music video, performance art, fashion film, nightclub fantasy, and personal reflection. Among the visual settings discussed: An ethereal forest sequence filled with dreamlike imagery, symbolic figures, spiritual undertones, and a sense of rebirth and transformation. A sprawling nightclub environment paying tribute to New York dance culture and the legendary Danceteria club where Madonna's early career began. Sunday Edition with Anthony Corona Shelley Keeland, Breaking Barriers One Word at a Time What does it take to turn determination, talent, and a dream into a career that many believed was impossible? This week on Sunday Edition, Anthony welcomed Shelley Keeland for an inspiring and heartfelt conversation about her life, her journey, and more than three decades as one of the nation’s pioneering blind court reporters. Born totally blind and raised in Arkansas, Shelley attended the Arkansas School for the Blind before earning a degree in Political Science from Hendrix College. Encouraged by family, shaped by life on her grandparents’ farm, and driven by a love of language, grammar, and the legal system, Shelley set her sights on a profession that few believed a blind person could successfully enter. Court reporting is one of the most demanding professions in the legal field, requiring speeds of 225 words per minute combined with extraordinary accuracy and attention to detail. Shelley became one of the first blind court reporters in the United States, overcoming inaccessible technology, professional skepticism, discrimination, and countless barriers along the way. During this wide ranging conversation, Shelley shared stories from her remarkable career, the mentors and supporters who helped make her success possible, and the realities of working as a professional court reporter in a field where precision matters every single day. We were also honored to be joined by Judge Byrd, affectionately known as Tea Byrd, who worked alongside Shelley for many years. Judge Byrd offered valuable insight from an employer’s perspective and shared observations about Shelley’s professionalism, dedication, work ethic, and the tremendous respect she earned from judges, attorneys, coworkers, and court personnel throughout her career. His work has touched countless people through entertainment, disability rights advocacy, direct human services, and leadership within the blindness community. Michael also played a role in advancing disability rights during the movement that led to the Americans with Disabilities Act and was honored to attend the White House signing ceremony when President George H.W. Bush signed the landmark legislation into law. Later in life, Michael returned to graduate school to become a certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist, helping blind and low vision individuals navigate the world with confidence and independence. Even in retirement, he continues to share his gifts through advocacy, mentorship, and service. Many in our community know Michael through his unforgettable performances on Behind the Music and community karaoke nights.
