The Jupiter Club with Gina Jurlando

In this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast, we welcome back Gina Jurlando to the show. You might remember her when we last had her on to talk about the Yeasty Boys, the community surf group she founded to help make surfing more welcoming, inclusive, and supportive for everyone looking to paddle out.Since then, Gina has continued doing what she does best—bringing people together. Whether it's through surfing, community events, environmental initiatives, art, film, or simply creating spaces where people can connect, she's become one of the driving forces behind the ever-evolving culture of Rockaway Beach.Today she's back to talk about two exciting new projects. First, the inaugural Rockaway Surf Film Festival, a new celebration of surf culture, storytelling, creativity, and the unique community that has grown around the ocean here in New York. And second, Jupiter Club, a new community-focused surf club, co-working space, event venue, and gathering place that is already becoming a hub for surfers, artists, entrepreneurs, and locals alike. Jupiter Club was created to carry forward the spirit of community that has always made Rockaway special, while creating new opportunities for people to connect, collaborate, and share ideas. From building one of the most welcoming surf communities on the East Coast to helping launch new cultural institutions right here in Rockaway, Gina continues to prove that surfing is about much more than waves—it's about the people you meet along the way.She is our guest today on this episode of The Swell Season Surf Podcast.Follow The Jupiter Club on Instagram: jupiterclubnycYou can find more information on the club and The  Rockaway Surf  Film Festival here: https://www.jupiterclubnyc.com/ The Swell Season Surf Podcast is recorded by The NewsStand Studio at Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan and is distributed by The Swell Season Surf Radio Network. For more information, you can follow @swellseasonsurfradio on Instagram or go to our website: www.swellseasonsurf.com Music: Artist: The SandalsSong: Driftin’Album: The Endless Summer Soundtrack 00:00 Welcome Back Gina02:42 Host Gift Plug04:17 Jupiter Club Origins06:53 Amenities And Bike Plans08:18 Why Jupiter Club10:18 Running The Space11:49 Membership And Lockers13:33 Programming By Community15:35 Work Life Balance18:36 Film Festival Idea21:16 Keeping It Short23:41 Tech And Volunteers26:39 Submissions And Judging28:50 Screening Night Details29:22 Panel Talk And Kwame30:12 Surf Therapy Explained32:02 Volunteering and Perspective33:25 Running a Surf Club35:23 Dogs and Community Vibes36:12 Film Festival Updates37:00 Summer Events Lineup37:23 Wetsuit Repair and Sustainability40:51 Art Classes and Community Ideas42:30 Organic Growth and Challenges45:27 Social Media Struggles48:36 Surfer Questionnaire51:06 Final Plugs and Wrap UpBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/swell-season-surf-radio--3483504/support.

The Last Train Home with Sean Aiken

In this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast, we sit down with Rockaway’s own Sean Aiken—founder of Seany Pizza, creator of the upcoming Crown Square Pizza, and host of The Last Train Home podcast. While Sean may be best known these days for his Detroit-style pizza, his story stretches far beyond the kitchen. We talk about growing up in Rockaway, the neighborhood’s unique creative energy, and how the peninsula has evolved over the years. Sean reflects on life in Dayton Towers, memories of Rockaway Playland, and the influence of his family on everything from work ethic to music taste. We also dive into Sean’s journey through New York’s music and nightlife scenes—from learning to DJ at Jam Master Jay’s Scratch Academy to managing at Brooklyn Bowl—and how those experiences ultimately led him toward pizza, entrepreneurship, and a new sense of purpose. From apprenticeships at some of New York’s most respected pizza institutions to building a business of his own in Rockaway, Sean’s story is one of reinvention, persistence, and finding meaning through craft and community. This conversation touches on pizza, music, sobriety, creativity, neighborhood identity, and what it means to build something lasting at the edge of New York City.Grab a slice, crack a soda, and enjoy this conversation with Sean Aiken.Follow Sean on Instagram: @seanypizzaTo listen to Sean’s Podcast click the link here: The Last Train HomeThe Swell Season Surf Podcast is recorded by The NewsStand Studio at Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan and is distributed by The Swell Season Surf Radio Network. For more information, you can follow @swellseasonsurfradio on Instagram or go to our website: www.swellseasonsurf.com Music: Artist: The DriftersSong: Under the BoardwalkAlbum: Under the  Boardwalk00:00 Welcome to Rockaway02:41 Pizza Gifts and Plugs04:04 NYC Roots and Neighborhoods05:59 Accents and City Memory08:16 Rockaway Seasons and Family Life12:01 Growing Up Rough Rockaway15:38 Playland Memories17:16 Parents Jobs and Old NYC21:30 Loss and Health Fears22:30 Ocean Air Cats and Wild Dogs24:59 San Francisco Detour25:51 Rockaway Change and Future29:14 Boardwalk Rebuild Debate29:44 Rockaway Community Backbone30:40 City Neglect and Flooding Fixes31:47 Summer Crowds Reality Check32:46 Music Roots and Influences35:49 Brother Returns and Hip Hop Spark41:24 Concerts and DJ Beginnings45:47 Scratch Academy Deep Dive47:38 Beatmatching and DJ Respect50:18 Reggae Nights and Paying Dues56:23 From DJing to Managing57:56 Williamsburg DJ Scene58:35 Black Betty Breakthrough58:52 New Orleans After Katrina59:14 Leap of Faith Mindset01:00:41 From DJ to Tour Manager01:03:08 Van Tour Reality Check01:04:35 Opening Sets and Pride01:05:47 Brooklyn Bowl Training01:08:38 Ego Check and Feathers01:11:25 Humility and Consumerism01:15:40 POS Chaos and Bonding01:16:20 Meeting His Future Wife01:19:55 Sobriety and Partnership01:23:06 Pizza Craft and Standards01:26:04 Pizza Origins and NYC Icons01:27:10 Pizza Inspiration TV01:27:48 Lucali and Paulie Gee01:29:01 Vegan Pie Philosophy01:30:17 Apprentice Origins01:33:04 Starting Over Lessons01:36:19 Crown Pizza Vision01:41:14 Bromate Dough Debate01:43:04 Influencers and Taste01:48:23 Pizza Lightning Round01:52:38 Plugs and FarewellBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/swell-season-surf-radio--3483504/support.

    Surfing Saves with John Angiulo

Our guest for this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast is John Angiulo — a professional surfer, surf educator, author, filmmaker, and one of Montauk’s most thoughtful voices exploring the deeper meaning of surfing and wave culture. John grew up immersed in the roots of East Coast surfing. His father, Kenny Angiulo, was considered one of New York’s standout surfers during the golden era of East Coast surf culture, often mentioned alongside legends like Ricky Rasmussen. His uncle, Michael “Mick” Angiulo, played a major role in helping legalize and expand surf access throughout New York State beaches through his groundbreaking work with the Eastern Surfing Association.John began surfing at just five years old at Ditch Plains, and over the past three decades has taught thousands of people to surf in places like Montauk, Indonesia, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico. But this conversation goes far beyond surfing technique. Through projects like A Word on Waves and the Surfing Saves Project, John explores the idea that surfing is more than a sport — it’s a framework for understanding life, community, energy, and our relationship with the natural world. We dive into Montauk surf history, the battle for beach access, surf instruction, lineup culture, spirituality, quantum theory, wave consciousness, and how surfing can become a tool for personal and communal regeneration. We also discuss John’s monthly “Paddle Outs to Peace,” designed to promote collective coherence and connection through the ocean. This is a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about surfing, philosophy, community, and the power of waves — both in the ocean and in life. We hope you enjoy…Follow John on Instagram @_surfingsaves_ You can find his books at www.surfingsaves.com The Swell Season Surf Podcast is recorded by The NewsStand Studio at Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan and is distributed by The Swell Season Surf Radio Network. For more information, you can follow @swellseasonsurfradio on Instagram or go to our website: www.swellseasonsurf.com Music: Artist: Cornell CampbellSong: Lost in a DreamAlbum: The Very Best00:00 Welcome and Guest Intro09:26 Epic Session and Lineage11:52 Angelo Family Roots14:10 First Wave and Lifelong Stoke15:57 Babylon Montauk Split17:20 Boards and Early Mentors18:58 Competition and Anger20:11 Surfing vs School Freedom24:25 Spiritual Shift and Waves29:14 Mom Prayer and Quantum32:17 Maharishi Effect Explained34:41 Paddle Outs to Peace36:46 Community and Connection40:41 Surf Lessons Origin Story41:59 Launching The Family Surf School43:49 Mentors And Montauk Legends46:13 Surfing And Writing Path49:27 Teaching Beyond Technique53:12 Surfing Saves Explained56:58 Waves As Life Metaphor59:49 Lineup Culture And Dark Side01:08:27 Havens Nine Wave Model01:13:55 Research Behind The Framework01:15:45 AI Tools Validate Ideas01:17:09 Nine Dimensions Made Practical01:18:37 Protocols for Daily Coherence01:21:00 Film Grants and Eclipse Story01:23:31 Interview Subjects and Partners01:26:56 Governance Model Against Corruption01:30:03 Community Over Extraction01:32:04 Future Paddle Outs Expansion01:33:32 Surfer Questionnaire Fun01:39:11 Heaven Wave and Final PlugsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/swell-season-surf-radio--3483504/support.
