Kimla Desrosiers was raised Catholic until she encountered her first awakening upon reading about Buddhist teachings. The idea that everything within reality can be broken down into wisdom and compassion resonated so deeply with her, that she felt something within her heart break open and remember. Much to her parents’ discomfort, she left the Catholic Church, joined the Universal Unitarian church and eventually became a Tibetan Buddhist, taking a vow that spans across lifetimes. In this episode, she shares with us her experience of leaving her body for the first time, the beings she met there, and the wisdom they shared. Dr. Nancy McLaughlin-Walter never expected that she would end up studying consciousness. When Joan Walton wast just 16 years old, she walked out of church confirmation classes, upon learning the ceremony meant that she believed every single word in the Bible to be true. The commonly held belief surrounding sleep paralysis is that it is a disorder, a glitch of the brain if you will, nothing more. Dr. Joan Walton has generously offered to switch hats with the host of Tale from the Truth Seekers so that listeners could get the inside perspective on Natalie’s story, what motivated her to start the podcast to begin with, and what she has learned and observed by interviewing 30+ people about their spiritual experiences in just one year. In 1977, P.M.H. Atwater died and came back three consecutive times. After this experience, she was sure that she was going crazy, until she attended a symposium in which a speaker gave a talk on eternal consciousness and shared an image that exactly matched what she had experienced when she died. She was finally validated. While she was existing beyond the veil, she also heard a voice, so big it filled the entire universe, and the voice told her that she was to do the research, and write a book for each of her deaths. Over the past forty-three years she has gone on to write twenty-seven books and has studied roughly five-thousand cases of near-death experience. In this episode, she opens up about her childhood, how she got her name, and she shares stories about all the people she’s met along the way. While unconditional love is the common denominator in near-death studies, the divorce rate post-experience is as high as 80%. Mrs. Atwater shares her insight on why this is, and how we can better support these wise but vulnerable souls as they navigate reentry into the material. In her teenage years, Dr. Sioux Oliva discovered The Urantia Book, and after encountering beings from another dimension on a California beach, her curiosity around non-human intelligence has never waned. In 2014 she published Dr. Sadler and The Urantia Book: A History of Spiritual Revelation in the 20th Century. In this episode, she shares with us a wealth of knowledge and research around NHI. Anthony and Boutaina both immigrated to the United States as children giving them unique and highly insightful perspectives from a young age. After graduating college and finding their way into the work force, they both found themselves in the position of being asked to analyze “narratives” online in order to “get ahead” of any naturally occurring beliefs the public held that were not optimal for company sales or political successes. Jessica Desilets spent her childhood as a Catholic, but in later years felt confused by the notion that such a loving and forgiving god could simultaneously be so harshly judgmental. As she grew into young adulthood, she turned to alcohol as a means to numb herself from childhood trauma and societal messaging, eventually finding herself in recovery at AA. Following a seemingly random intuitive hit to pack up and and move across the country to Virginia, she discovered The Monroe Institute, and decided to gift herself a retreat for her fortieth birthday. The assassination of Charlie Kirk shifted something. For me, I could no longer sit back and stay silent as I watched my fellow liberals cheer and laugh at someone’s brutal murder on TikTok. Their reactions ignited a fire in me to educate the American public on the realities of the age of misinformation they are living in. I was shocked at how many people online misinterpreted my pleas for humanity as Nazi sympathy. But I refuse to live in a society made up of cultism and senseless death. For those of you who have been following me on social media, I want to reiterate that this has nothing to do with politics, social issues, or sides, and that my claims about brainwashing are for every American, including myself. No one is immune. In this episode, I interview former open-source intelligence analyst, Anthony Miller. You may have heard of Scarlett’s story, as she was featured on The UnXplained with William Shatner in 2019. But her experience barely fits into a television show format, as it is one of the most beautiful stories you might hear on your quest to know the unknowable. Scarlett was doing her best as a single mother of two boys with special needs, when she discovered reiki healing could be highly beneficial to her son, so she decided to earn her certification. One night, while attending her AA meeting, she met a grieving mother who confessed that she had just been told by the hospital that there was nothing more they could do for her son. Much to her own surprise, Scarlett responded by telling the mother not to give up just yet, and that she would be happy to perform reiki on him the next day. This is where the unbelievably powerful magic, channelled from the beyond, begins to illuminate her story. He was a stranger, hovering between worlds, and she was a channel for divine love. Laurel Waterman was a happily married wife and mother of two small children when the unexpected death of her husband in 2018 launched her into a quest for proof of consciousness beyond the brain. Rowena Worth has a background working in corporate, was a body builder, endured years of abuse and workplace bullying, and followed the societal expectations of continuously moving along, until one day it all caught up with her and she found herself in a completely dissociative state. Unable to perform mundane tasks, professionals told her that she would never fully heal. In a world that’s falling apart and seems laden with suffering, there’s a simultaneous unfolding of a collective awaking to our true nature and purpose on this earth. In this realm of duality, perhaps these extremes are unavoidable, yet the natural inclination towards balance is what can always bring us hope. I know, from a deep experiential place, that the human spirit, and all of creation, is made of one consciousness bound together by a force called “unconditional love.” So as we look out upon the landscapes of horror that seem to infiltrate our news sources, the best antidote to chaos that exists, is simply connecting with this gentle, profoundly powerful force within ourselves. Not through chasing, or attaching, but through pause, connection, and compassion for what’s real, now. This is the only true antidote. At a young age Todd favored connecting with nature over the stuffy atmosphere of the church. Sometimes it is when we are most hurried, most distracted, and most distraught that these unexplainable experiences suddenly enter our lives. In Season One, Episode 5 of Tales from the Truth Seekers, I had the pleasure of interviewing Roger Oney, my podcast launching mentor, about the spiritual experiences he has had throughout his life, and the ways in which they have changed him. The most potent of all being an out of body experience that introduced a burning clarity back into his life, melting everything else away. Before we begin: If you know me, and you listen to this episode, I want you to understand that you are unknowingly healing a painful perceived gap between us that I have been experiencing for a long time, and I extend my utmost gratitude to you in advance. Welcome to Season One, Episode 1 of Tales from the Truth Seekers. This podcast is a series of interviews from people who have had first-hand spiritual experiences which then proceeded to change their lives forever, as these things usually do. So, since I am your host, I thought perhaps I should begin with mine. It’s the only solo episode in the season, just me, telling my story to my laptop in a small public library in a tiny town in rural Virginia. In the years following my experience, I began to feel like the main character in Lois Lowry’s The Giver. If you don’t know this story, it takes place in a utopia that is actually a dystopia. The main character is gifted with information about how the world used to be, back when colors, dancing, passion, love, death, birth, music, emotions, and everything that makes us beautiful and human was “allowed.” He tries to wake up the other people in his life from their zombie existence only to be met with confusion, fear, and ostracization. Eventually, he can’t take it anymore. This metaphor felt like my internal living reality for so long. It was as if I’d somehow been gifted with incredible, life-altering, information and yet the more I tried to tell others about it, the more I felt like I was stuck inside of a soundproof box, slowly spiraling in feelings of isolation. This is a big reason the woman from the episode above insisted that she meet with me to validate my experience, isolation is a dangerous feeling. Yet I’ve come to accept what my initial experience taught me and what it really was: a total release from external need and validation, brought on by an inner wholeness, and a complete contentment with what is, right here right now, because 99.9% of the time, what is right here right now, is perfectly, totally, and beautifully alright. So my highest hope is that this episode speaks to you, deeply. When I listen back, all I keep thinking is that words cannot ever do it justice. I worry that it won’t land at all. I see everything I forgot to mention. I notice all the ways that everything could be misinterpreted by the mind. I didn’t reiterate how calm I felt or how innocently powerful I was. I didn’t clarify that the “judgement” I refer to meant negative assumptions and othering, not objective discernment. I also meant to make it clear that the two realities have directions. The reality of separateness is horizontal and linear, and the reality of union is timeless and vertical, and that somehow when I went away and came back, I ended up at the spot where they cross… I also wish I’d reiterated how grounded I was and how awake I felt. I wasn’t floating away or losing touch with reality, quite the opposite. I was one hundred percent here for the first time ever. My eyes were physically more open, and my thoughts were not involuntary, so the waking dream-state we have all come to deem as normal had been turned off. Because of this, I’ve come to think the word awakening originally referred to something quite literal. I also forgot to mention that I felt a surge of adrenaline in the moment before I disappeared, but I can only re-record and edit so many times, and I should save at least some of this for my book someday.I know I have to accept the fact that for some people listening, it could just be a “huh, interesting,” and then a move on with the day. But, hopefully, for some of you it brings hope (not blind belief), wonder, peace, and reassurance that the thing you are looking for, the magic, the mystery, the health, and the wholeness, are all not only real and possible, but that they are the most real, and the most possible things that exist. I remember at the time being secretly and naively shocked that it didn’t immediately go viral and change the world. Reading it back now I can see how others weren’t as amazed as I expected them to be. Although it was amazing enough to be published in an online journal (the silly title was just meant to be click bait) and it is still a very lovely piece that remains very close to my heart. It also includes a few details that I may have forgot to include in the episode above so I thought I’d share it here. I think it’s best suited to read after listening, but you do what’s best for you. :)I tried meditating for the first time last week and, well, it worked.In fact, now that I know what can come of it, I might be changed forever.Here’s what happened:I just sort of laid down on my back, closed my eyes and started telling myself all the things I’ve learned from meditation believers, and with each new thought I relaxed my body more and more.I reminded myself that there’s nothing to be afraid of, at all, ever. Fear is an illusion. Fear is an illusion because attachment is an illusion.There’s nothing to be afraid of losing because we actually have nothing to lose.We have nothing.Money can burn like paper, possessions are easily lost or stolen, even the people you love more than anything could be gone tomorrow.The past is gone and the future is a mind projection.We should love anything or anybody outside of ourselves but all we really have is ourself, here, now in this moment.That’s what exists, the moment happening now.I’d been fighting with the boy I’d been seeing for a while and hadn’t talked to him in two days. When he popped into my head I reminded myself that I would deal with that in my own way on my own time. Then I told myself to just be.Immediately, I felt adrenaline. I think it’s because it’s scary to really let yourself detach from everything. All the sounds around me became distinct and then my eyes focused on the backs of my eyelids.Then I was asleep. I have no idea how long I was asleep, or unconscious, or whatever I was—maybe 20 minutes? (Looking back, I’m not sure if it was sleep.)And I don’t remember any dreams. When I woke up I realized that all the colors in my room were bright. I looked over and saw my rings on my windowsill and felt that the angles formed by the way they were sitting were picture worthy.Then I realized the ripples in my pillow were too, as well as the electric chords hanging down from my table.I had the idea to get up and Instagram everything in my room but didn’t have any desire to rush or capture and attach to anything so I just laid there appreciating how it all looked.When I sat up, my relationship immediately popped back into my head but I wasn’t angry anymore. I felt sadness. But it was different. I wasn’t trying to run from my sadness.I wasn’t trying desperately to find a way to fix things.I wasn’t thinking of all the things I thought he did wrong and how I need to tell him so he can fix them, and fix my feelings and make me feel better.I wasn’t trying to escape it and I wasn’t making him the only rescue line.It was just pure sadness.The day before I had jotted down a couple of things I wanted to tell him once we had cooled off and weren’t angry:“This doesn’t work because you, you didn’t, you didn’t, you didn’t, you’re not good at, you make me….” But I’d completely forgotten about those things, or they were just gone from my head and everything rushing into my head was:“I apologize, I chose to, I’m sorry, I was acting out of pain and it was wrong, I’m deeply sorry, you don’t deserve, I understand…”And I sent a long text. But there was no hope, no agenda, no expectations towards him. No he ‘should’ be this or that now. I remember being a little afraid to send it but I knew that somehow I wouldn’t be mad if he wrote something back that was angry or blaming.I knew that it was my decision to take that risk and I did all I could do. Then I sent it and dropped it from my mind. I didn’t check my phone once.I stayed in this state for two days.I noticed a lot of things during this time. I performed mundane tasks with awareness, care, and clarity, even walking. Temperature and hunger seemed to have less of an effect on me. I was never rushed or stressed.When left alone with my own mind—for example, just sitting on the train—I actually controlled my thoughts. I chose what I wanted to think about, and no past stress or future possibility came into my head to haunt me. I’d think of something, solve it if it was a problem or put it from my head if it there was nothing I could do right then.I wasn’t chewing on the inside of my cheek or picking at my face.Other women didn’t seem like competition at all. In fact, the whole idea of competition seemed silly. Status, power and attitude all seemed very silly and every single advertisement I saw seemed overly desperate.I wore no makeup, without hesitation. But there was no sense of accomplishment or achievement in it, I just didn’t need make up. In fact, during all of this I never felt “better than” or judgmental or cynical because others weren’t acting like I was.I was just being a being, clear and at peace.It’s somewhat comparable to the difference between when we were bullied as kids and how we’d react to it now. Most of us would probably laugh at what was said to us then. And because we’re confident now and like who we are, we’d possibly even feel pity for someone that was so immature and pained inside. It’s not a perfect metaphor but it’s similar in that the outside can’t ever take or touch what we have inside.During those two days I also only checked my phone for specific things that needed checking and I wasn’t using it for escape.I was able to meditate and actually fall asleep without thoughts or fears filling my head, which is the only healthy solution I’ve found for falling asleep quickly in 27 years.I was more honest and didn’t find myself thinking of excuses or second guessing any of my actions.Junk food wasn’t tempting.My eyes felt more open and I felt aware.I felt awake. (when I said “awake” I meant physically, literally.)I believe this is our natural state, and unfortunately it seems almost impossible to access in this kind of society.When I went to see this guy the next day, it was not like I’d ever been after a fight.While waiting for him to get off work, I was just sitting in his cafe noticing how the ceiling looked for the first time. I wasn’t afraid or upset that it happened. I saw him and I felt happy.We ended up talking for hours and I noticed that I wasn’t getting defensive of anything anymore. I felt responsible for all of my feelings and I didn’t feel the need to prove that I wasn’t not a “push over” by getting angry.He even ended up offering his own apologies for a lot of the things that I’d written in my original list. I’d never felt so caring and close to him.Some people believe that God is like a current and we are all conductors of that current which brings us to life. If we could all just stop for a moment and eliminate all the static and background noise then God really can come through us. Animals and plants must do this every day of their lives, and with our intelligence, we have the potential to become something remarkable and truly transcendent.After my experience, I think that this way of looking at things is not too far from the truth. Whether or not I believe in God in a traditional sense, something to that effect seemed to be happening to me.Even after trying to explain what I experienced, the words can’t compare to actually being there. All I can do is say that it’s peaceful, natural and real, and that I was actually the person I’d always wished I could be.So what I’ve learned is this: eliminating outside attachments and just being with yourself, even if it’s for a little while, somehow consumes you with self worth. If you had told me in April of 2014 that in ten years time I would be hosting a podcast complied from interviews of people who have had real spiritual awakening experiences, I would have not believed you. Before everything happened the word “spiritual” felt cheesy to me, all religions looked no different from cults, and if someone had an awakening it meant they’d been taken. The very idea of cultism and brainwashing has been deeply disturbing to me for as long as I can remember and I was very happy to subscribe to the Newtonian, mechanistic, material, model world-view as a means of dodging the brainwashing. Plus who doesn’t like to believe their outlook makes them smarter than everyone else?Oh how life loves to humble me.Of course there are still plenty of people out there who treat religion no differently than a cult member would. I’ve also witnessed for myself the transformation of the word “spiritual” from something deep, profound, and mysterious, to something silly, cheesy, and ridiculous by tribes of seemingly well-intentioned, oblivious people who only proceed to ruin the movement known as New Age. But what I didn’t know at 27 was that there was a third group of people, who don’t always belong to religious or spiritual circles and who don’t call themselves atheist or agnostic either. I also didn’t know that with this third group comes another dimension of reality altogether, and that I would suddenly find myself as part of it at 28.Our modern, mainstream society with all its fancy gadgets and technological advances is shockingly ignorant to a part of the human condition that is arguably the most important part. It is a piece that was celebrated, understood, and woven into the fabric of societies around the world for millennia. In fact it still is in many parts of the world today. Modern, Western, non-indigenous, culture and the societies of relatively recent past that helped to shape it, are possibly the first and only societies to banish firsthand spiritual awakening experiences to the forbidden lands of the taboo. In most other cultures if a person found themselves able to communicate with the dead, the unborn, and the spirits of nature, or if they were suddenly consumed with a love so intense and overwhelming that they could feel the essence of a higher power, these people were encouraged to become shamans, priestesses and priests, medicine men, sages, mystics, and druids. In many indigenous cultures there are also much needed support systems in place for people who suddenly wake up to the nature of reality and their experiences and abilities are celebrated as important contributions to the community which gives them an outlet and a role in the world. In modern America there are no support systems. Instead the person’s innocent, direct experience seems to threaten everyone else’s belief system and sense of safety by defualt. In not all but many cases, people are deemed insane by the secular, heretical by the religious, and are usually gaslit by the New Agers, while we all continue to search for answers about the mystery of life in places we will never find it. Meanwhile, the mental health crisis rages on, the Earth continues to be treated as a dead, lifeless, thing to be exploited, and the experiencers themselves can suffer greatly from isolation, confusion, lack of support, and depression all for having the most beautiful and the most human experience they can possibly have. Yet there are people who have gotten through it, hiding in the margins, living real-world examples of what is possible and where the answers lie. They are sitting on the sidelines, usually trying to contribute their magic to the world in the most “acceptable” way. So they commodify and commercialize their offerings so as to remain digestible to the highly spook-able public. Meanwhile there are plenty of imposters and fake gurus out there, further clouding our ability to see any of them clearly. Or perhaps they just live quietly, as role models of grace and maturity, living a seemingly normal life while silently wondering if anyone else has felt what they’ve felt or seen what they’ve seen. Not being given a role from the community when having a spiritual experience does contain a silver lining though. Because when you are able to step out of your comfortable belief systems and open your heart and mind to listen to people’s stories, you’ll come to find out how universal and how simply human these experiences really are. You don’t need to have been meditating in the desert for years or make life-altering sacrifices to something you believe in. These are misconceptions that can come with labels and titles. You’ll find instead that these people are actually just financial analysts, corporate company members, university students, lost 20-somethings, hospital patients, mothers, fathers, authors, and teachers, neighbors, “atheists,” Christians, and Hindus. People of any culture, and religion, any age, and any belief system. One day it hits them, their consciousness expands, their spirit soars, and they become a living example of what we all are hoping to find but continue to be too scared to see in plain sight. Now let’s be clear. No one can “get out” of the human experience. We are here to feel all of the emotions and to be the protagonist in our one, unique, hero’s journey of ups and downs and of deaths and rebirths. No one has all the of the answers either. This is an ironic realization of the most enlightened among us, the people who seem to know it all. A huge part of awakening is realizing that divinity and the great mystery are linked, that it is all around us, and to become re-enchanted by how much we do not know and yet thoroughly enjoy pondering all of it anyway. Spiritual awakening stories are also sometimes highly personal and tender. It is vulnerable to publicly share them and can feel strange to take your experience of unity and spread it out into the world of separateness, up for anyone to judge or naysay. But our world today is in desperate need of the truth from trust-worthy, primary sources, people who are not pushing opinions or beliefs, who are not selling you anything, promising anything, or expecting anything from you. Just stories. Stories that serve as a healing elixir to both listener and experiencer alike. Stories that turn you back around and send you home to yourself. Stories that are here to bring truth, love, peace, and magic to an increasingly cult-like, fearful, and cynical world.
