Tavern News: A New Age Begins | Creator Films, Studio Mergers & Gaming Legends Return

Set foot inside the TFTM Tavern once more to hear all about the latest news from around the realm. From films, to tv shows, to major company acquisitions, and to video games, the quest board is loaded with exciting stories for all to hear. So grab yourself a seat, order some mead from the barkeep, and keep your ears to the ground as you learn all about the latest happenings in this week's Talk Fantasy to Me news episode.  Paramount’s blockbuster acquisition of Warner Bros has been approved by the U.S. Justice Department, paving the way for the merger to take place by their target date in September. However, things may not go down as smoothly as they would like, as several states are actively suing Paramount and Warner bros for potential antitrust laws. The world’s latest obsession is, well….Obsession. This movie continues to explode at the box office, shattering records with ease, and achieving feats never seen before, while also inciting fear in the eyes of the old school Hollywood executives who believe that these content creators are ruining the spirit of Hollywood. Not all is grand in the land of Obsession, however, as the film has been struck with a bit of a controversy as the film’s art director took to social media to express her desire for more pay since the project has taken off. The Art Director’s post has stirred up quite the debate online, and Chase and Kyle weigh in with opinions of their own on the matter. Backrooms, like Obsession, has also performed well above expectations, and it is a continued juggernaut at the box office. Young Kane Parsons is the youngest director EVER to direct a movie with A24 (only 21yrs old!), paving the way for new up-and-comers looking to break into Hollywood. What does the success of these independent films made by “content creators” say about the future of filmmaking? Are the once hallowed gates of Hollywood exclusivity being knocked down for good? Is this good for the film industry, or does it hurt it? Tune in to find out. We got new trailers released for Spider-Man Brand New Day, Chainsaw Man International Assassin’s Arc, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 4 - Culling Game Arc Part 2 (that’s a mouthful), and Shrek 5. Just like Gingy, we are all caked up like a bakery watching these new trailers. Why does Shrek now look like he has Mike Myers’ face? Why does Donkey look ten times older with the fancy new realism animation? We don’t know, but the trailer is a lot of fun. How about this for rumors, Grinch 2 is reportedly in development with Ron Howard set to direct and Jim Carrey returning as the Grinch. Evil Dead Burn isn’t even out yet, and Sam Raimi is already cooking on Evil Dead Wrath, which is said to be set a decade before the original film, and will be filmed with an Ektachrome-like film to resemble the original colors and grain from the first film. Fox Corp is buying Roku for $22 billion to expand their streaming capabilities. We have a new Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum casting, as Anya Taylor-Joy will be joining the cast as a new original character named Seren, a Sindar Elf. Halloween Horror Nights announced another new house, and it is Stranger Things season 5. Dungeon Crawler Carl is in development to be adapted into a TV show on Peacock with Universal International Studios and Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door banner producing. Matt Dinniman, the author, is also an executive producer. The writer for it is Chris Yost (known for The Orville and Thor: Ragnarok). Finally, Chase and Kyle discuss the latest news in the gaming universe, with Kingdom Hearts 4 getting teased, Backyard Baseball getting a reboot, Ocarina of Time remastered teaser dropping, and Grand Theft Auto 6 getting its official pre-order date. Will GTA 6 be the biggest game release in history? Will the game itself cause millions of peoples’ consoles to explode from its sheer scale and graphical capabilities (absolutely)? Will Ocarina of Time feel new again? Will Backyard Baseball do the original justice by staying true to what made it special in the first place (spoiler alert, it totally will)?   Whether you love learning about the newest film and tv announcements, film industry gossip, business acquisitions, or video games, this episode delivers a little bit of something for everyone.    SUMMARY Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. faces potential anti-trust lawsuits despite approval. Fox Corporation is buying Roku for $22 billion. The success of independent films like “Obsession” and “Backrooms” spark debate about the future of Hollywood. New trailers for “Spider-Man Brand New Day,” “Chainsaw Man,” “Jujutsu Kaisen,” and “Shrek 5” are released, along with rumors of a “Grinch 2” film in development. “Evil Dead Wrath” will come after “Evil Dead Burn,” and it will take place a decade before the original “Evil Dead” film. Toy Story 5’s Rotten Tomatoes score officially makes Toy Story the highest rated franchise of all time on Rotten Tomatoes. Dungeon Crawler Carl is coming to Peacock and is being produced by Seth McFarlane and Universal International Studios, with the help of Matt Dinniman himself as an executive producer. A video game renaissance is upon us, as Kingdom Hearts 4 was teased, Zelda Ocarina of Time remastered was teased, Backyard Baseball is getting remastered and releasing on July 9th, and GTA 6 is officially available for pre-order starting June 25th. Hit play and unlock the mysteries of the Long Night, Valyria, and the Targaryen’s impossible survival.     Takeaways: Power of strategic humility Historically, House Targaryen's survival amidst Valyria’s fall stemmed from perceived weakness and deliberate restraint rather than dominance or aggression. Leadership that embraces vulnerability and deliberate restraint can preserve core assets and prepare for future influence, especially when direct power diminishes. Aegon’s decision to avoid sweeping conflicts at certain moments—such as not besieging the Eyrie or not fully conquering Dorne—enabled him to solidify control without overextending, illustrating that restraint can be a form of strategic strength. The importance of cultural stability over conquest Consolidation of power in Westeros was achieved more through respecting existing customs and laws than through brute force, exemplified by Aegon’s use of the Great Council and respecting the realm’s legal continuity. Sustainable authority depends on integrating into existing social fabric rather than erasing it, making governance more stable and less costly over time. Aegon’s calm acceptance of the loyalty of surrendered kings, along with the maintenance of laws and respect for local traditions, allowed the realm to adapt to a unified rule without provoking widespread rebellion. Valyrian inheritance as a metaphor for cultural legacy Valyrian steel and dragons symbolize the enduring power of cultural artifacts—legacy tools and symbols—whose significance outlasts the physical entities that created them. Transferable legacy—whether in technology, storytelling, or values—outlives the material, serving as an inheritance that influences future generations far beyond the original context. Valyrian steel swords like Blackfyre and Dark Sister continue to influence Westerosi politics and civil war, exemplifying how rooted symbols shape future conflicts and identities. The paradox of strength through restraint A ruler’s true power lies not in the immediate display of force but in the disciplined choice to deploy violence sparingly and deliberately, which sustains authority. Mastery of this paradox enables leaders to escalate conflict purposefully, ensuring strategic advantages without delegitimizing authority. Aegon’s restrained use of dragonfire at key moments—like the peaceful surrender of the Eyrie—strengthened his reputation more than brute conquest could, illustrating pacifist power as a form of mastery. Memory as a foundation for legitimacy The histories and stories that persist—such as the Long Night, the Wall, and the founding heroes—serve as collective memory that legitimize authority and shape national identity. Creating a cohesive narrative around history reinforces legitimacy and can be leveraged to unify or motivate communities, especially in times of crisis. The shared stories of the Long Night and the Wall anchor Westeros’ collective understanding of resilience, shaping policies and cultural attitudes toward threats. The flex between adaptability and consistency in leadership Great rulers balance honoring tradition with the necessity to adapt—Aegon’s respect for existing laws while reshaping institutions exemplifies this. Flexibility within a stable framework allows institutions to evolve without losing legitimacy, crucial for long-term stability. Aegon’s creation of the Small Council preserved governance continuity, even as he introduced reforms to centralize power, enabling adaptability without chaos. Myth-making as a form of strategic influence Mythologies—such as Azor Ahai and the long night—serve as tools to encode cultural values and shape collective behavior, often emulating shared fears and hopes. Harnessing myth and story can be a form of soft power, influencing societal cohesion and decision-making beyond straightforward facts. The myth of Azor Ahai’s sacrifice and rebirth underpins the need for sacrifice in power transitions, shaping leadership narratives across Westeros’ history.   Chapters: 00:00 - Introduction: Exploring Valyria and Westeros lore 00:29 - The origins and rise of Valyria’s empire 01:00 - Valyrian magic, sorcery, and their dark rituals 01:55 - House Targaryen’s minor status in Valyria and their escape 02:53 - The Doom of Valyria and its aftermath 04:00 - The Century of Blood: Power vacuum and House Targaryen’s survival 05:46 - The Targaryen family and their last dragons 07:13 - The Long Night and the threat of the Others 08:11 - The awakening and the hero of legend 10:04 - The construction of the Wall and the Night’s Watch 11:32 - The Age of Heroes and the establishment of the great houses 12:47 - The conquest of Westeros: Aegon’s campaign begins 14:29 - Battles: Field of Fire, Harrenhal, and Storm’s End 16:27 - The unification of the realm and the role of faiths 18:23 - The history of Valyrian steel and its legendary swords 21:18 - Aegon’s arrival and strategic landings 25:45 - The death of Rhaenys and the retreat of Dorne 36:57 - Aegon’s coronation and the forging of King’s Landing 37:27 - A peaceful reign and the Dragon’s Peace 40:21 - The death of Rhaenys and the subsequent conflicts 42:19 - The legacy of Aegon’s rule and the cycle of blood and fire 43:30 - Closing remarks: The enduring power of fire and blood
