Welcome back to episode five of Talking Pictures! Tonight’s show saw Dave and Evan take another respite from Letterboxd’s lauded list of films and talk the complete works of one of the preeminent filmmakers of our generation, Jonathan Glazer.We went chronologically, first basking in 2000’s “Sexy Beast” (30:11), then experiencing 2004’s “Birth” (43:32), later shedding our layers for 2013’s “Under the Skin” (58:30), and finally residing in 2023’s “The Zone of Interest” (01:03:13).We hope you enjoy the show!

On tonight’s episode, we warmly welcome Corwynne Peterson to the show! A fellow acting schoolmate of Dave’s and a hugely talented one at that, Corwynne is the perfect guest to talk about our four movies tonight. First, after some breaking news and birthday wishes (10:29), we checked in to a Californian Airbnb to check on our favorite snail not named Turbo and check out the Jenny Slate vehicle “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” (22:21), no. 220 on Letterboxd’s Official Top 250 Narrative Feature Films List. Then, we crossed the Pacific to muse about two classics of Asian cinema: Wong Kar-wai’s vividly drenched-in-red and atmospheric romance “In the Mood for Love” (36:17) and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s 2018 wayward soulscape “Shoplifters” (53:35), numbered 54 and 143, respectively. Last and certainly not least, Evan, Dave, and Corwynne spoke on Corwynne’s selection for the night, the Great Depression-era father-daughter caper “Paper Moon” (01:08:20), the Ryan and Tatum O’Neal masterpiece coming in at 104 on the List. Welcome back to the pod! On tonight’s episode, the second of Season 2, Dave and Evan were joined by fellow thespian and cinephile, Chris Castagna! After some birthday wishes and news dishes (04:34), they first tackled the sweaty and sweltering “Do the Right Thing,” Spike Lee’s landmark 1989 film and No. 55 on Letterboxd’s Official Top 250 Narrative Feature Films list (18:05). They then jettisoned to post-war Italy for the melancholic yet magical “Bicycle Thieves,” listed at No. 125 (43:39). Thirdly, they traveled BACK to New York City for the satirically timeless Scorsese-De Niro collab “The King of Comedy,” currently No. 207 (01:05), before Lastly, dontcha know, Chris selected “Fargo” for our final viewing pleasures, reveling in discussion on the 1996 Coen masterpiece and No. 238 film on our list (01:20). On tonight’s episode, the first of Season Two, Dave and Evan were joined by the very talented and creative Sarah Morrison-Cleary! After birthday wishes and breaking news (13:50), the three of them first tackled “High and Low” (20:57), the Akira Kurosawa kidnapping caper from 1963 and No. 6 movie on Letterboxd’s Official Top 250 Narrative Feature Films list. Next, they reveled in Charles Laughton’s performance in Billy Wilder’s and 1957’s thrilling courtroom procedural Witness for the Prosecution (33:14), listed at No. 97, before musing on the highly imaginative and interpretative “Cure” (46:02), Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s meditation on crime and psychology from 1997, ranked No. 201. Lastly, Sarah had the honor of choosing one of her favorite films, the No. 164 film “The Night of the Hunter” (01:01:26), for the final movie of the night, which sparked far too much discussion on the use of prosthesis in cinema in 1955. On this episode, after some born days and Headlines to Mr. Piccinetti (4:37), Dave and Evan spotlit three movies. First, they were traumatized alongside Charles Melton’s character by Netflix’s and Todd Haynes’ campy drama “May December” (15:00). Next, they partially opened their arms for David Fincher and his return to the director’s chair and Netflix with “The Killer” (28:16). Lastly, after Evan touched on a slew of films to include the bathwater-indulging “Saltburn,” the shortcomings of Ridley’s Scott’s “Napoleon,” the delightful otherworldliness that was Nicholas Cage’s “Dream Scenario,” and the most woefully mis-titled movie of the year in “Best. Christmas. Ever!” (42:57), they re-entered the multiverse for the final time in 2023 for what could be the MCU’s dying breath in “The Marvels” (01:06:20). Hope you enjoy the show!

Welcome back to the show! This week, after getting into the day’s births and the latest cinematic news, Dave and Evan talked three recent Netflix projects before getting into Martin Scorsese’s latest crime epic. First, they discussed the Emily Blunt- and Chris Evans-led opioid melodrama “Pain Hustlers” (15:49). Then, they discussed the gender politics put on screen in the erotic thriller (that was anything but) “Fair Play” (29:30), followed by both a spoiler-free and a spoiler-y discussion of Mike Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” (43:00). Lastly, Marty, Leo, and Bobby are back for another collaboration, this time for the big screen adaptation of David Grann’s harrowing book “Killers of the Flower Moon” (43:47). On tonight’s episode, after some birthday wishes (05:43) and “breaking” news (11:04), Dave and Evan talked about John Carney’s latest music-centric film, Apple TV+’s “Flora and Son” starring Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (15:18). Then, they stuck to song and traveled back to 1984 to witness the A24-remastered, once-in-a-lifetime concert film “Stop Making Sense,” Jonathan Demme’s chronicling of an evening or three of Talking Heads on stage (28:37). Lastly, before briefly touching on “No One Will Save You,” “Reptile,” “Love At First Sight,” “Totally Killer, and the recent cinematically short works of Wes Anderson in an uncharacteristically positive segment of “Rec or Dreck” (40:19), Evan and Dave checked out visionary director Gareth Edwards’ latest sci-fi foray in “The Creator” starring John David Washington (01:06:29). Welcome back to the show! On this week’s episode, Dave and Evan (or Skrulls impersonating them) are talking Marvel’s latest television entry with “Secret Invasion” (12:52) before diving deep into Wes Anderson’s eleventh feature film in “Asteroid City” (23:47). They then indulged in everything gastronomy by visiting “The Bear” (44:54) and reveling in its sumptuous second season. Lastly, they traveled back in time (not to kill baby Hitler, but close) for Harrison Ford’s latest and presumably last donning of the hat, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (01:19:16). Enjoy!

On this special episode, Dave and I are looking back on the last six months and, after reviling some of the worst films we’ve have the displeasure of seeing (09:10), are reveling in the best of the best to hit movie theaters and television screens in 2023 (15:18). Then, we holed ourselves up in a hotel room with Christoper Abbott and Margaret Qualley to voyeuristically revel in the twisted “Sanctuary” (23:56) before teaming up with Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake yet again for Netflix’s “Extraction 2” (36:09). Lastly, much to Dave’s chagrin, we re-entered the Speed Force to dissect and disparage the newest (and penultimate) entry in the DCEU, “The Flash” (53:00). Welcome back to the show! On this week’s episode, Dave and Evan are talking a handful of the big releases and drops that mid- to late May saw. They first visit the threequel of Paul Schrader’s Man In A Room trilogy in “Master Gardener (02:25). They then discuss the highly-touted trans drama “Monica” (08:30) before speaking to the series-ending finale of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (15:20) after five sublime seasons. Lastly, they end on a high note with “You Hurt My Feelings” (20:36), Nicole Holofcener’s latest feature of adult humans having adult problems, this time reuniting with Julia Louis Dreyfus. Enjoy!

On the latest episode, after Evan breaks some newish news to Dave (11:30), we travelled under the sea and found “The Little Mermaid” at differing depths of quality along the way (15:30), lamented the remake by Calmatic of yet another beloved movie from three-plus decades ago in “White Men Can’t Jump” (29:30), and talked the next and unfortunately not last installment in the Vin Diesel broken-down vehicle of a saga with “Fast X” (40:02). Lastly, fresh out of the multiplex, Dave and Evan ventured into the multiverse once again this year to exult in everything Spider-Verse with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" (01:03:30). On this week’s installment of Rec or Dreck, Evan and Dave dove into the very little content that was released the first two weeks of May, thanks to the behemoth that was “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” taking over the box office and public’s consciousness. In this week’s episode, Dave and Evan are tackling some of the biggest movies to hit theaters so far this year. 2023 has finally gotten some momentum going, evident by the spectacular box office numbers and a massive jump in the quality of the product being put out. After tackling some of the biggest news in cinema in a new segment (13:45), they’ll be taking the nearest green tunnel to the Mushroom Kingdom and talking “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (21:04). They’ll then discuss Ben Affleck’s much-lauded return to the director’s chair for “Air” (35:14) before venturing into role-playing territory for “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (56:19). Lastly, they’ll be ascending the Sacre-Coeur for (somewhat) dueling takes on “John Wick: Chapter 4” (01:11:57). Enjoy the show!

March is underway and so are the blockbusters! We are first discussing Adam Driver’s (very much junk) sci-fi epic “65” (10:25) before returning to the City of Brotherly Love for the second (and presumably final) installment in the “Shazam!” franchise (23:24). Then, Dave and Evan talk TV, particularly Pedro Pascal on TV, spotlighting the season 1 finale of “The Last of Us” (44:15) and the official* season 3 premiere of “The Mandalorian” (1:03:19) [*unofficial if you take “The Book of Boba Fett” into consideration]. Finally, for the main event, “Creed III” takes the ring and we threw a lot of punches its way (01:08:48). Hope y’all enjoy!

Finally, we followed the Langs, Pyms, and Van Dynes into the quantum realm to argue whether “Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania” spells promise or doom for the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward (01:12:27). It’s officially February and the first big movie of the year is upon us! Dave and I start this episode by reviewing Brandon Cronenberg’s debatably allegorical but certainly gross-out indie flick Infinity Pool (12:21), the Netflix original comedy You People (35:14) starring Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy, and Sarah Polly’s Oscar-nominated character study Women Talking (46:41). Then, we get into the feature review for the episode, M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin (01:14:23), and argue whether or not Night has regained his fastball as a filmmaker and writer.
