Purim: Finding Simcha and Contentment When your life is Uncertain

As we enter the month of Adar, we are reminded: “When Adar comes, we increase in joy.” But what does that actually mean—especially when life feels uncertain? In this class, we explore the deeper Torah concept of simcha—not fleeting happiness, but inner contentment that can coexist with anxiety, loneliness, overwhelm, and unanswered questions. Through the lens of Megillat Esther and the theme of hester panim (Hashem’s hiddenness), we uncover how Purim teaches us to look for hidden miracles in our own lives. Drawing from the powerful stories of Nachum Ish Gamzu and Rabbi Akiva, we examine two transformative perspectives: “This too can turn out for the good.” “Everything Hashem does is inherently for the good.” We discuss how uncertainty fuels worry, comparison, jealousy, and emotional overload—and how training ourselves to recognize nissim (even the hidden ones) builds resilience and menuchat hanefesh. We also explore: The difference between happiness and joy Why gratitude strengthens simcha How loneliness and overwhelm can become catalysts for growth Why identity must be rooted in purpose—not status, possessions, or circumstances Viktor Frankl’s teaching: If you know your “why,” you can survive almost any “how” Adar reminds us that joy is not a mood—it is an avodah. It is a practice. It is choosing to move forward, even when we cannot see the full picture. This episode is about finding steadiness, meaning, and simcha—even when life feels uncertain.

    Rivka's Mirror: Part 2

In Part 2 of our Rivka Imeinu classes, we explore what it truly means to be an Eishes Chayil—not just doing good for one’s husband, but maintaining inner steadiness and integrity regardless of circumstances. Through the lens of Rivka’s life, we examine the four qualities that returned to Sarah’s tent when Rivka entered it: Divine presence, warmth and hospitality, financial integrity and bracha, and enduring shalom bayis. We discuss how environment shapes us, how surrounding ourselves with kedusha strengthens our relationships, and how small, consistent acts build greatness over time. Most powerfully, we learn from Rivka’s restraint—her ability to hold painful knowledge, disagree with her husband, and still preserve dignity, kindness, and peace. This episode is about emotional discipline, intuition, and partnering with Hashem so that our reactions come from strength rather than hurt. Consistency in marriage is not personality—it is avodah.

  3. 115

    Rivka's Mirror: Part 1

In Part 1 of our Rivka Imeinu classes, we step into the foundations of Klal Yisrael through the lens of Rivka’s character and mission. We explore what the Torah’s “extra details” in the shidduch story are teaching us about what to look for in a spouse: midos, humility, compatibility, family influence, and the ability to build as an ezer k’negdo—not a submissive “yes-person.” We also discuss the Torah view of hishtadlus vs. emunah in shidduchim, the role of beauty and presentation in marriage, and how Rivka’s clarity and courage shaped the destiny of Yaakov—and all of Am Yisrael.

  4. 114

Viduy and the Core of Change

During the Aseres Yimei Teshuva, we are given the miraculous gift of change. This class explores the true meaning of Viduy, the process of Teshuva, and how Yom Kippur enables us to confront our inner struggles, release past baggage, and uncover the deeper patterns that hold us back—so we can enter the Gates of the King with clarity, freedom, and renewed purpose.

  5. 113

The Door is Open: Emunah and Teshuva in a World Unraveling

Elul and Rosh Hashana call us to return to Hashem with honesty and clarity. But how do we find focus when the world around us feels shaken by tragedy and upheaval? In this shiur, we will explore the Torah’s perspective on current events and how they are meant to awaken us—individually and as a nation. Drawing on the lessons of Shevet Dan, Shimshon, and the Ramchal’s teaching of קיווי—hope as a lifeline to Hashem—we will see how even in moments of darkness, our greatest strength lies in our Emunah. By learning to truly “hear” Hashem’s call in Elul, we can approach the Yamim Noraim with resilience, purpose, and renewed faith.

  6. 112

Hearing the Voice of the Neshama on Rosh Hashana

Rosh Hashana is not only a day of judgment—it is the day we crown Hashem as our King. But what does that really mean in our lives today? In this shiur, we will explore the dual process of Malchuyos: accepting Hashem’s Kingship and rejecting any alternative. Drawing on the insights of Chazal, Rav Yitzchak Berkowitz, and the Chovos HaLevavos, we will uncover how the Yetzer Hara presents itself as a false “king” within us, and how the true voice of our Neshama can guide us back to clarity, meaning, and fulfillment. By understanding this inner battle, we can approach Rosh Hashana with a deeper sense of resolve, joy, and menuchas hanefesh, ready to truly crown Hashem as our King.

  7. 111

Tisha B'Av & the Soul's Cry for Connection

This class explores how the Three Weeks and Nine Days are not just times of mourning, but deep opportunities for reconnection with Hashem. Through the lens of love, longing, and spiritual intimacy, we’ll uncover how challenge, mitzvos, and even our pain can become vehicles for the deepest pleasure — bonding with our Creator. Discover what it means to truly love Hashem and be loved by Him, especially in the moments that feel most broken.

Rachel's Mirror: The Wife of Rebbi Akiva

As we prepare to receive the Torah anew this Shavuos, join us for a powerful journey into the life of one of the most extraordinary women in Jewish history — Rachel, the wife of Rabbi Akiva. In a time of deep Roman oppression, fractured Jewish identity, and spiritual confusion, Rachel saw what no one else did: the soul of a shepherd named Akiva — a man with no Torah, no status, and every reason to be overlooked. What did she see? And more importantly — how did she see? This class will challenge us to think deeply about what it means to be a Torah Jew, to believe in potential — in ourselves and others — and to approach Shavuos not just as a commemoration, but as a celebration of the world’s greatest gift: meaning, direction, and divine truth. Let’s come together this Yom Tov to celebrate what it means to be part of a nation that chose Torah — and what it means to choose it again, every day.

The Gift of Torah: Embracing our Choices

As we prepare to receive the Torah anew this Shavuos, we’ll explore how Torah serves as our ultimate roadmap in a world that often feels confusing, overwhelming, and full of riddles. In a time when truth can feel obscured and choices uncertain, the Torah anchors us with clarity, purpose, and direction. This class will delve into the privilege and responsibility of being Torah Jews — how owning our choices and aligning them with timeless Divine wisdom empowers us to live meaningful, intentional lives. Together, we’ll uncover practical and inspiring ways to celebrate this Yom Tov with deeper awareness and gratitude for the gift of Torah, and reflect on how to keep that clarity alive throughout the year.

    Miriam's Mirror: The Unsung Hero

In this episode, we explore the legacy of Miriam HaNeviah, a true Jewish hero whose greatness lay not in public recognition but in quiet, unwavering devotion. From guiding Moshe’s destiny as a child to leading the Jewish women in song at the sea, Miriam’s life teaches us that true heroism is found in small, hidden acts of faith, courage, and kindness. We unpack the Puah Principle—that real greatness is measured not by acclaim, but by character. Join us as we reflect on the power of humility, the strength of Jewish women, and what it truly means to be a hero in the Torah’s eyes.

  11. 107

    Igeres HaRamban (Class 5)

n this episode, we delve into the Ramban’s heartfelt message to his son: to serve Hashem with pure and genuine intention. At the core of this avodah lies true Yiras Shamayim—a deep, reverent fear of Heaven. It’s this fear, the Ramban explains, that gives us the strength to follow what we know to be true and right, rather than giving in to our fleeting desires. We explore how moral clarity doesn’t come naturally; rather, it’s a product of a life steeped in Torah and mitzvos. Hashem created a world where His presence isn’t obvious, giving us true free will—yet it’s our mission to seek Him in the everyday and make the constant choice to live with awareness and connection. We also continue our journey through the Ramban’s teachings on character refinement, drawing on insights from the Alter of Slabodka, Rav Moshe Feinstein, and others. Topics include humility, kindness, and self-discipline—how we treat others, even when no one’s watching, and how working on our midos can give us a taste of Olam Haba right here in this world. Tune in for timeless Torah wisdom and practical takeaways on living with purpose, presence, and elevated focus.

  12. 106

    Igeres HaRamban (Class 4)

The Ramban continues to emphasize Anavah—humility—but cautions that true humility is not timidity. Making decisions from a place of weakness or people-pleasing is not humility; it is a lack of inner strength. Instead, real Anavah means standing firm in our values and making choices from a place of truth. When we compromise our core beliefs to satisfy others, we are left feeling unmoored and disconnected from ourselves. A key aspect of wise decision-making is contemplating our mortality. While it may seem morbid, recognizing that our neshama will one day stand before the Eternal King provides clarity and purpose. As we transition from childhood to adulthood, embracing this awareness helps us choose a life path that is not just fulfilling in the moment but one we will be proud of for eternity. Join us as we explore the strength behind true humility and the power of living with long-term vision.

  13. 105

    Igeres HaRambam (Class 3)

The Ramban highlights the importance of Anavah—humility—as a foundational midah. According to Sefer Tomer Devorah, humility serves as a superconductor for acquiring all other positive character traits. Ultimately, Anavah leads to Yirat Shamayim (awe of Hashem), which in turn fosters Sameach B’chelkeinu—true contentment with one’s lot in life. But how does one actually attain this level of contentment? While Pirkei Avos teaches that the truly wealthy person is satisfied with what they have, the Mishnah does not outline how to achieve that satisfaction. The Ramban, however, provides a roadmap: 1️⃣ Eliminate Anger – Serenity is impossible if one is easily upset. 2️⃣ Overcome Pride – The need for recognition can erode happiness. 3️⃣ Embrace Humility – A humble person finds peace within. 4️⃣ Develop Bitachon (Trust in Hashem) – True contentment comes from believing that nothing happens by chance, even when life seems unfair. In this episode, we also explore the difference between happiness and joy—and which one is truly worth pursuing. Tune in for an insightful discussion!

This class was given at the Valley Kollel Chanukah Melava Malka.

  15. 103

    Igeres Harambam (Class 2)

The Ramban teaches that true spiritual growth begins with menuchat hanefesh—inner tranquility. Our sages outline four steps to achieving this essential trait, which must be protected as the key to a Godly life. The Ramban also warns against anger, which stems from insecurity and a need for recognition. Instead, true happiness comes from selflessness and thinking of others. Join us as we explore the path to serenity and lasting spiritual fulfillment.

  16. 102

True joy emerges when we let go of arrogance and appreciate what we have with thankful hearts connected to the Divine source. We'll learn how to access this transcendent level of pleasure by reorienting our mindsets away from our egos and towards Hashem.
