Purim: Finding Simcha and Contentment When your life is Uncertain

from TEHILA - Torah Education With Heart in Los Angeles · host Mrs. Sheindy Gross

As we enter the month of Adar, we are reminded: “When Adar comes, we increase in joy.” But what does that actually mean—especially when life feels uncertain? In this class, we explore the deeper Torah concept of simcha—not fleeting happiness, but inner contentment that can coexist with anxiety, loneliness, overwhelm, and unanswered questions. Through the lens of Megillat Esther and the theme of hester panim (Hashem’s hiddenness), we uncover how Purim teaches us to look for hidden miracles in our own lives. Drawing from the powerful stories of Nachum Ish Gamzu and Rabbi Akiva, we examine two transformative perspectives: “This too can turn out for the good.” “Everything Hashem does is inherently for the good.” We discuss how uncertainty fuels worry, comparison, jealousy, and emotional overload—and how training ourselves to recognize nissim (even the hidden ones) builds resilience and menuchat hanefesh. We also explore: The difference between happiness and joy Why gratitude strengthens simcha How loneliness and overwhelm can become catalysts for growth Why identity must be rooted in purpose—not status, possessions, or circumstances Viktor Frankl’s teaching: If you know your “why,” you can survive almost any “how” Adar reminds us that joy is not a mood—it is an avodah. It is a practice. It is choosing to move forward, even when we cannot see the full picture. This episode is about finding steadiness, meaning, and simcha—even when life feels uncertain.
