“Never a Straight Path” Justcarlo (Canada)──What inspired you to create this film for GIFF 2025?I have always enjoyed telling stories through the medium of video. I first found out about GIFF in 2021, which was the year I started geocaching. I attended my first GIFF event in 2023 and watching those films in a community setting was very inspiring. I wanted to create a film myself. In fact, I have a youtube channel where I post my geocaching adventures and thoughts about geocaching. The GIFF was a chance to try a different kind of storytelling that I have been thinking about for some time now.──How many people worked on your film, and how long did the production take?It was just me! Lol. I’m pretty much a solo film maker, but that’s only because I didn’t reach out to others or try to find additional resources. I didn’t have a long-term plan to film anything. I had a lot of ideas, but they required more people and resources than I had available. I shot the footage in January of 2024, and it was originally for a different video project–something for the Youtube channel, and not really for GIFF. But I didn’t do anything with the footage for a long time, and then in July of 2025, I took another look and decided I really wanted to make something out of the material I had. I began editing around the first week of July, and writing the voiceover at the same time. The voiceover went through a few changes, which affected the video edits. I can’t remember exactly how much time it took, but I submitted the film on the last day of the deadline!──What was the most memorable or challenging part of making your film?Because I shot the original footage in 2024, I couldn’t go back and correct anything or record additional footage. Also I recorded in winter, and when I was editing it was summer over one year later so of course the park I filmed at looked very different. I had to be creative in the writing and editing to fill in some parts that might have been missing, but I enjoy that!──Is there a moment in your film that you hope geocachers around the world will notice or appreciate?The overall message is to appreciate the small moments of happiness that we find in geocaching (or any other hobby we enjoy for that matter). After watching the past GIFF films, I knew I couldn’t film epic adventures, or design costumes or elaborate props. I didn’t have actors or a film crew, or even lighting. So I chose instead to focus on the emotion of geocaching, of the satisfaction of finding even the small hides, and still enjoy the adventure that brought us there.──Please share a message for geocachers in Japan.Hello geocachers of Japan! “David CachinBro — First Lamp Post” DNF Hound (USA)──What inspired you to create this film for GIFF 2025?There is a famous British naturalist named David CachinBro. We often see him observing animals in the jungle. I thought it would be fun to imitate him — using his British accent and observing geocachers in their natural habitat, just like he does with jungle animals.In the United States, those square, box-shaped geocaches attached to lamp posts are very common and honestly quite boring. They’re everywhere. So I thought this concept would at least be interesting for American geocachers.In my film, my actor is genuinely shocked when the box lifts up. Every geocacher I know has had that same experience: “The box lifts up?!” We were all surprised the first time.──How many people worked on your film, and how long did the production take?I shot the film on an iPhone. I asked two of my geocacher friends to act in it, and for the final line I had a friend — who is not a geocacher — do the voiceover. Since I tend to procrastinate, I only started filming about a week before the deadline, and we shot everything in about one or two hours.A few days later, I had one of the actors come back for about 30 minutes so I could film four or five close-up shots that were needed to improve the piece. It took me a few days to edit everything on my laptop. But in the end, the whole project was finished within a week, and I submitted it one or two days before the deadline.──What was the most memorable or challenging part of making your film?One memorable moment was when the actor pretended to see a bug and jumped — he had a pocket knife attached to his keychain and accidentally cut his finger a little. I ran back to the car to get a small bandage and wrapped his finger. After that, we continued filming.──Is there a moment in your film that you hope geocachers around the world will notice or appreciate?I hope that every geocacher can relate to the actor’s joy when he discovers the geocache under the lamp post. We’ve all experienced that moment while geocaching. That feeling never fades. It’s pure joy.──Please share a message for geocachers in Japan.Geocaching is similar to other games or sports. I’m sure that people who play golf, no matter what country they live in, share many things in common. They enjoy challenges, they love doing fun activities outdoors with friends, and they love the challenge itself — as well as the joy that comes from completing it. The same is true for geocachers.I hope to visit Japan someday. Japan is high on my travel list. “Return of the Cache Napper Trailer” ZippyZipperZoo (USA)──What inspired you to create this film for GIFF 2025?I had actually planned a similar film for GIFF 2023 after watching "The Batman" and thinking it would be funny to do a dark and gritty Geocaching story, but ran out of time to actually create it that year. Over the following two years, that concept developed, keeping the detective aspects and morphing into a more Film Noir style project, because who (in film) solves puzzles better than a detective? I always love to take a concept and think of a logical but unexpected direction to take it. I also enjoy taking silly concepts and playing them completely seriously; I personally find a good balance of comedy and sincerity in creating things in that style.──How many people worked on your film, and how long did the production take?We had five people on this project. I did all the pre-production and post-production, and my actors all doubled as production crew when they weren't on camera! Not including the aforementioned two years I spent thinking of creating this, I spent around 2 days drawing up story boards and planning my shot list, we did all the filming on a single day (about 12 hours), and then I spent around 2 weeks editing it!──What was the most memorable or challenging part of making your film?The most challenging part was filming at night. I have made many films and videos in my life, and lighting has always been my greatest opportunity for growth, and night time is one of the trickier things to light properly. Doing a noir-style film meant the lighting was really important, so I did my best to play with the shadows and darkness on screen just as much as I did with the light. Although it is not perfect, I am very proud of the progress I have made as a filmmaker, and will remember what I learned from this production!──Is there a moment in your film that you hope geocachers around the world will notice or appreciate?No specific moment, but I hope everyone who watched appreciates the distinct tone we tried to convey and inspires someone else to think outside the box of what a geocaching story can be!──Please share a message for geocachers in Japan.Thank you so much for being a part of this community! “Little Apple Tree” Rassis on tour (Germany)──What inspired you to create this film for GIFF 2025?We've already submitted this type of film to GIFF twice. In 2019, we even won the audience award with our funny frogs. We simply want to spread a little joy with our mascot. Signal is Cacher's best friend.──How many people worked on your film, and how long did the production take?We filmed the movie as a family, with four people and nine frogs. We had a lot of fun in our garden. We managed to film everything in one day.──What was the most memorable or challenging part of making your film?What we as a family will definitely remember is the fun we had and the joy of making it to the finals again. During filming, we were delighted every time the little frogs did what we wanted – which isn't so easy with puppets.──Is there a moment in your film that you hope geocachers around the world will notice or appreciate?We hope to share the joy of geocaching together and, of course, the cuteness of frogs. And of course the spirit of „Together we can do it!“. “Orthoceras” Breizh Geocacheurs (France)──What inspired you to create this film for GIFF 2025?Our main inspiration was to highlight Earthcaches. Too often, geocachers say that Earthcaches are too complicated. We wanted to show them that Earthcaches can also be fun.──How many people worked on your film, and how long did the production take?Twelve people responded to the call to participate in the filming, which took place over the course of a whole day. We organised two events at two specific locations (https://coord.info/GCATNJJ and https://coord.info/GCB473Q) on the western tip of Brittany to get the footage we wanted. Once there, we had to pack up our gear several times due to a few rain showers and, more importantly, a big storm. The editing took a few days, then we sent it to our friend Rachel, who recorded some piano sequences directly inspired by the video.──What was the most memorable or challenging part of making your film?The most difficult part was persuading geocacher F1AKKdu29, who plays the role of Orthoceras coming out of the water, to shoot the scenes in the sea after the violent storm we had on location. He didn't want to go into the water because lightning had just struck very close to where we were.──Is there a moment in your film that you hope geocachers around the world will notice or appreciate?We don't know if everyone noticed, but at 1:14 in our film, you can see mega fossil ridges behind us. This is a fairly rare geological phenomenon that can be found on earthcache GCA958F. “The Inheritance” Maxagri60 (France)──What inspired you to create this film for GIFF 2025?Nous nous sommes inspirés des récits partagés par les géocacheurs : pour nous, c’est bien plus qu’un simple jeu, et on voulait vraiment transmettre cette dimension-là.──How many people worked on your film, and how long did the production take?J ai travaillé toute seule sur le projet. L’idée mûrissait depuis longtemps. Début mai, j’ai vérifié dans le règlement si le style dessin animé était permis. Une fois confirmé, tout s’est enchaîné : écriture du script, storyboard, création des personnages et des décors sur tablette graphique, puis l’animation. J’ai bouclé le tout la veille de la deadline, vers 23h30, le 2 août si je me souviens bien.──What was the most memorable or challenging part of making your film?Le moment le plus marquant, c’est quand on ajoute le son et qu’on anime pour faire naître une émotion. Même si le résultat n’est pas parfait et que je vois encore des défauts, le vrai défi a surtout été de trouver le temps d’avancer sur le projet sur mes moments libres.──Is there a moment in your film that you hope geocachers around the world will notice or appreciate?On a intégré des dates clés pour célébrer les 25 ans du Géocaching, ainsi que les trésors dans la cabane à oiseaux à la fin — un clin d’œil à notre bocal rempli de souvenirs rapportés de chaque série.J ai voulu aussi marqué par l esprit de famille, beaucoup de géocacheurs partent à l aventure en famille. “The Island” Blackcoconut (Canada)──What inspired you to create this film for GIFF 2025?I didn't necessarily have a plan to make a film until I saw the call for submissions, and I couldn't get out of my head the adventure I’d had on that island the year before. I really wanted to make a film, and I thought it would be a fun, exciting adventure to try and get a conclusion to all the misadventures we’d had on St. Peter’s Island the year before. It only made sense to try and use the footage I'd already shot on the island and plan a trip back to see if I could conquer the geocache that was still out there.──How many people worked on your film, and how long did the production take?A very, very small team. It was me writing it and starring in it, and my lovely wife, Kenzie, helped film a lot of the scenes at home. My friend Chris helped with the drone footage — he actually came with me when I went to venture across the sandbar, saw me off, and took those cinematic overhead shots as I made my way out there. And then, of course, Justin, who the film is really about. He’s obviously in the footage, and I got him on the phone to hear some of his story about the poison ivy.──What was the most memorable or challenging part of making your film?If we go back to when we first started shooting any footage for it, the most challenging part was certainly recovering from all the poison ivy we’d gotten trapped in. Where we camped, we were quite literally swimming in poison ivy — and it was high-bush poison ivy, so I didn’t really notice it directly. We climbed around the island for an entire day, and we really put ourselves through it. Suffering from that poison ivy was pretty serious.But then when it came to actually filming the deliberate scenes for the GIFF submission, the most challenging part was finding a time to get to the island without a boat again. I didn’t have access to that canoe anymore since I’d sold it. So we had to cross on foot at low tide, and there’s only about once a month when the tide is at peak low, giving you the biggest window to cross safely. I didn’t want to get stuck out there. I brought extra food and clothes in case I got wet if the tides came back up. We had to plan it accordingly, which meant there were only three chances all summer I could go. I’d missed the first two, so the low tide in August was my last chance.──Is there a moment in your film that you hope geocachers around the world will notice or appreciate?I hope that geocachers appreciate the idea of caching for a quality experience rather than quantity. Like a lot of cachers, I love the numbers and data aspect, but I find I always have a more memorable and special time when I’m going for a specific victory rather than chasing high numbers. That’s mentioned in the film — that going for one cache or one adventure can give you a really rewarding experience, versus stopping every 150 meters down a trail for little park-and-grabs or bench caches. That’s still part of the game and I love it dearly, but if I only got one cache a month, I’m okay with that as long as those are really fun adventures I never forget.──Please share a message for geocachers in Japan.Hello to all the geocachers in Japan. “If You Hide It…” geocachingvlogger and Seemyshell (USA)──What inspired you to create this film for GIFF 2025?The film was inspired by the creator of the Geocaches in Gilby - Trycachious. He dreams of geocaches and then creates them. They are ALL gadget caches and he has created an incredible GeoTourist destination.──How many people worked on your film, and how long did the production take? Two worked on it, Myself (co-storyline, director, cinematographer, editor) The Geocaching Vlogger (Co-storyline, actor) We had Trycachious as an actor in the film and several people turned up to an event on one of the filming days for the other snippets.──What was the most memorable or challenging part of making your film?The editing - it took some time to edit what we wanted, and creating the vision we needed.──Is there a moment in your film that you hope geocachers around the world will notice or appreciate?That hiding great quality geocaches will get other geocachers to your area, and to inspire others to look beyond the pill bottle.──Please share a message for geocachers in Japan.I have never been to Japan, but one day would love to.
