Gallup’s latest numbers show attendance at religious services among young men rising seven points to 40 percent — the highest level recorded since 2012–13. Attendance among young women rose three points and now stands at 39 percent. The increase is larger among men, but the current rates are nearly identical. Roughly four in ten young men and women now say they attend religious services at least monthly. Gallup found something else. The percentage of young men who consider religion “very important” in their lives jumped from 28 percent to 42 percent in just two years. Those numbers are significant. They are also fascinating. TIME seems irritated by them. The magazine recently devoted nearly 2,000 words to throwing cold water on the possibility that something spiritually important may be happening among Gen Z. It didn’t disprove Gallup’s findings. It couldn’t. Instead, TIME gathered enough skeptical voices and competing measurements to give readers permission to ignore them. PRRI found flatter numbers. Pew said there is no evidence that young men are “converting to Christianity in large numbers.” Other surveys measuring weekly attendance haven’t found the same increase Gallup reported among those attending monthly or more. Fine. Put all of that in the story. But none of it disproves Gallup. Gallup wasn’t measuring mass conversion. It measured attendance, affiliation, and the importance people place on religion. Weekly attendance is not monthly attendance. Conversion is not affiliation. Affiliation is not spiritual interest. TIME knows the difference. Yet the article repeatedly answers one finding with another survey measuring something else. An Excerpt from SCOTUS Overruled a Blue-State Judge Who Never Should Have Blocked This: Of course it was a Massachusetts judge. Of course she was appointed by Barack Obama. And of course, when President Trump signed an executive order in March requiring basic verification safeguards for mail-in voting, Judge Indira Talwani in Boston reached for the injunction pen, blocking the federal government from applying key provisions in 23 states and the District of Columbia ahead of November’s elections. On Monday, the Supreme Court told her no. Not on the merits. Not yet. But the administration can move forward. And before anybody starts hyperventilating about voter suppression, let’s look at what Trump actually ordered. He directed Homeland Security to compile lists of adult U.S. citizens and make that information available to state election officials before federal elections. Why? So states have another tool for verifying who is actually eligible to vote. He told the attorney general to prioritize prosecutions when officials knowingly issue federal ballots to people who aren’t eligible to receive them. And he directed the Postal Service toward a system in which states identify the voters who are supposed to receive mail ballots before those ballots start moving through the mail. That’s it. Read it again if you need to. We’re talking about verifying eligibility, enforcing laws already on the books and knowing who is supposed to receive a ballot before the government puts one in the mail. Apparently, this was alarming enough that 23 states and the District of Columbia went running to federal court before much of it even happened. Which brings us to the Supreme Court. The majority didn’t need to settle every future constitutional question surrounding Trump’s order to expose the problem with Talwani’s injunction. An Excerpt from Iran's D-Day Has Begun Iran has spent months threatening the world over the Strait of Hormuz. Don’t cross us. Don’t challenge us. Don’t ignore our rules. Don’t cooperate with the Americans. Or else. Well, the ships are moving. That’s the part Tehran can’t explain away. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has begun recovering despite Iran’s threats, even as the regime announces new penalties for vessels that refuse to play by its rules. Some ships are using routes Iran doesn’t recognize. Others are sailing with their transponders switched off, making the precise traffic picture difficult to measure. But the larger point is becoming harder for Tehran to hide: intimidation isn’t working the way it used to. Iran, naturally, is handling this with all the composure you’d expect. Mohsen Rezaei, the regime’s new security chief, warned that countries cooperating with America’s economic campaign could be treated as committing an “act of war.” Tehran is also threatening retaliation against neighboring countries and economic interests if they help Washington tighten the screws. Threats. More threats. And then some threats about the previous threats. Here’s a thought. Maybe they’re nervous. Because while Tehran is busy telling everybody what terrible things it might do, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is preparing to tell the world what the United States actually will do. Bessent calls it an “economic D-Day.” He says the administration intends to marshal America’s financial power to isolate Iran and force countries still doing business with the regime to make a choice. He’s having one last summer adventure, getting ready to pack his bags and head back to Times Square for a performance at the iconic Ellen’s Stardust Diner. He secured one of five spots to become a “Junior Starduster” for the day and sing LIVE at the iconic world-famous eatery on Tuesday, August 25. Finn was the winner of the 6-8 year old category.  Out of over 300 submissions in less than 24 hours from kids all around the U.S. (and beyond), Finn was selected as one of 30 finalists to audition live at the diner on July 21. He performed “When I Get My Name in Lights,” from The Boy from Oz for the judging panel, which included Broadway stars Nick Barrington, Gilbert L. Bailey II, Lisa Howard, Bailey McCall and vocal and theater artist Katy Wolfe.  Finn has been performing since before he could walk. Her defense is built on a claim of severe postpartum psychosis — nearly 20 medical visits in the months before the killings, testimony from her own mother that Lindsay described becoming psychotic and having thoughts of harming her children. The prosecution counters that she skipped prescribed medication and knew exactly what she was doing. A jury will decide which version the law recognizes. That's their job, not mine. But here's what doesn't require a jury to sort out. An Excerpt from They Wanted Him Dead. Now They Want Him. Some stories don’t need embellishment. They just need to be laid out plainly, because the facts alone do all the moral work. Here they are. Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed hired McKenna West to carry their child as a surrogate. Around 20 weeks into the pregnancy, doctors diagnosed the baby with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a severe congenital heart defect. According to the Texas Attorney General’s office, the couple asked West to terminate the pregnancy after that diagnosis. West refused. She fled to Texas, gave birth on August 12, and the boy she calls Gabriel underwent the first of three life-saving heart surgeries days later. He’s alive. Now those same biological parents are suing West for more than $100,000, alleging breach of their surrogacy contract and “malicious, outrageous conduct,” while simultaneously pursuing custody of the child whose pregnancy they had sought to terminate. Sit with that for a second. Let’s also be fair about what’s disputed here. Gilkar and Ahmed’s attorneys have pushed back hard on the characterization that they “forced” or “threatened” West. Court filings reportedly claim West initially agreed to the termination and even scheduled the appointment before changing her mind. Their lawyer, Lee Budner, calls West’s ongoing custody claims “baseless” and says they violate parentage rulings already secured in Alaska and California. They get their day in court. But even accepting that version of events, I’m stuck on the same problem. They wanted the pregnancy terminated. West didn’t. Gabriel is alive because it wasn’t. And now they want custody. You don’t get to want him gone and then want him yours. Pick one. A surrogacy contract is not a hunting license. It does not purchase the right to order the destruction of a living child because his heart didn’t form the way everybody hoped it would. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is serious. It’s one of the most severe congenital heart defects a baby can have. But children do survive it. There are treatments. There are staged surgeries. When your belief system is more or less fully transactional, you don’t become known for the strength of your convictions. So, pardon me if I’m more than skeptical about a defeated primary candidate, or even the House minority leader himself, suddenly trying to talk tough about the DSA takeover happening inside their own party. Let’s start with Rep. Haley Stevens. She lost Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed, and this week, on Fox News’ “The Sunday Briefing,” she said what a lot of nervous Democrats are apparently thinking out loud now that a new poll shows El-Sayed trailing Republican Mike Rogers by four points and underperforming with Black voters, women, and suburban voters compared to Kamala Harris’s 2024 numbers. “It certainly makes sense to get rid of this Hasan Piker affiliation,” Stevens said, before pivoting back to insisting the party’s platform still beats the Republicans’. “It certainly makes sense.” Really? Hasan Piker is the streamer who has said he wants to “wipe his a– with the Constitution” and that “the United States should go f— itself.” El-Sayed campaigned poolside with him at a Detroit party for content creators just weeks ago. And now it makes sense to get rid of the affiliation? That’s not exactly moral outrage. That’s somebody looking at ugly polling and suddenly discovering a problem everybody else could already see. Most days, the noise coming out of statehouses and cable news makes that argument hard to prove. This week, of all places, Massachusetts proved it. Gov. Maura Healey signed the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act this week, a bill that passed the state House 119-33 and eliminates statutory gestational limits on abortion, leaving the decision to a physician’s “professional medical judgment” at any point in a pregnancy, with expanded legal protection built in. Healey framed it as compassion, insisting families facing late complications shouldn’t have to leave the state to get care. State Rep. Jeffrey Turco of Winthrop framed it rather differently, and more accurately: “It allows abortion anytime, unrestricted, and in many cases, publicly funded until the moment of birth.” He didn’t stop there. “This new law represents an extremist and dangerous position,” he told Fox News Digital. “This law is barbaric.” Read that twice. That’s not a Republican talking point. That’s a Democrat, representing a Democratic district, in one of the bluest legislatures in America, using the word barbaric to describe his own party’s bill. He wasn’t alone. Nine House Democrats crossed the aisle to vote against this thing alongside every Republican in the chamber. State Rep. Chris Markey of Dartmouth called it “a very slippery slope” that puts doctors in an impossible ethical position and said plainly that you can be pro-choice and still see this law as “going beyond the norms of acceptability.” State Rep. An Excerpt from Two Women, Two Institutions, One Very Telling Week on Townhall.com Some weeks hand you an argument. This one handed me something better: a picture. Two stories broke within hours of each other, on entirely different pages of the news, about entirely different institutions, and sitting side by side they say more about this cultural moment than either one says alone. Start with the WNBA. On Wednesday, the league convened its transgender athlete task force — again — and emerged with an update that amounted to a shrug wearing a press release. "We will continue to engage all league stakeholders in the coming weeks and months," the statement read, before pivoting to scold "bad-faith efforts" to use the debate to "demean or marginalize others." Translation: more meetings, more lecturing, still no answer. The league's own collective bargaining agreement states plainly that "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA." A Public Citizen spokesman called it a "mindless anti-scientific assault." Doctors' associations lined up to push back. A federal judge has already blocked a prior version of similar changes after the American Academy of Pediatrics sued. Here's my actual question, asked in good faith: what, precisely, is the problem? Is it that spacing out vaccines poses some documented, catastrophic risk to children? Because I'll tell you what happened at my house this week. We brought home two new kittens, and at the vet, we were offered the option — routine, unremarkable, no hand-wringing required — to space out their vaccinations rather than deliver everything in one sitting. Nobody at that veterinary clinic accused us of "anti-science assault" for asking a scheduling question about a kitten's immune system. So why is the same basic question, asked about a human infant's immune system, treated as an act of civilizational sabotage? Is the concern that splitting the MMR into three shots instead of one somehow reduces effectiveness? Because if so, that's a specific, testable claim, and I'd like to see it argued specifically rather than gestured at anonymously. An Excerpt from Fauci: Now We Know For years, this argument has run in a maddening loop: does Anthony Fauci know more than he's telling us? Did he understand the risks he wasn't disclosing? Did he actually believe the certainty he projected on our television screens night after night? We asked. We speculated. We demanded accountability, which was never his strong suit, and mostly we got silence, spin, or a lecture about trusting the science. This week, the loop broke. We don't have to wonder anymore. Now we know. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) released the first tranche of texts recovered from Fauci's old government iPhone, and buried in a January 2021 exchange between Fauci, then-CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, and Dr. Vivek Murthy is a sentence that should end any remaining debate about what Fauci actually understood at the time. "Since many people have significant cytokines storm and fever after the 2nd dose," Fauci wrote, "this theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester." Privately, in writing, to two of the most powerful health officials in the country, Fauci flagged a specific, plausible mechanism by which the vaccine he was publicly urging on every American, including pregnant women, could end a pregnancy in its earliest and most vulnerable weeks. And then he said nothing. Publicly, the message stayed the same: safe and effective, no exceptions, no caveats, no mention of a theoretical risk serious enough that he'd raised it privately with the nation's top health officials. Johnson didn't mince words about it: "We tell pregnant women don't even have a glass of wine and yet we coerce them, convince them, sometimes mandated them, to get an experimental gene therapy as early as the first trimester. An Excerpt from Is Fauci's Pardon Legit If His Pardon Was by AutoPen? Let's play a fun little game of "what does 'sign' actually mean," shall we? Because Dr. Anthony Fauci just spent a Senate hearing invoking the Fifth Amendment 111 times — one hundred and eleven, an Olympic gold medal in constitutional dodging — and buried underneath that spectacle is a question that's far more interesting than anything Fauci actually said, which was, of course, nothing. Was his blanket pardon from Joe Biden even valid in the first place? And if it wasn't, does the Fifth Amendment even apply to a man who might not be pardoned at all? Here's the setup, delivered with all the drama it deserves. On his way out the door in January 2025, Biden issued Fauci a sweeping pardon covering any federal crime he might have committed going back to 2014, tied to his work running the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and steering the country's COVID response. Convenient timing, wouldn't you say? A decade of blanket coverage, delivered in the final hours, for a man who never stood trial for anything. It's the legal equivalent of buying insurance on a house that's already on fire and getting the claim approved anyway. Except here's the wrinkle nobody in the mainstream press seems eager to chew on: there's a real, live dispute over whether Biden's autopen pardons — Fauci's very much included — actually count. President Trump and a chorus of House Republicans have argued that Biden's team ran the autopen on a batch of late-term pardons without clear evidence the man himself ever made the call to sign them. Not "did a machine sign it," mind you — that part, on its own, is boringly legal. Presidents from Lincoln forward have had subordinates put ink to paper for them, and a 2005 Justice Department opinion under George W. Bush blessed the practice for legislation, with the logic extending comfortably to pardons. A robot pen isn't the problem. Robots don't get indicted. The problem, the real one, the one worth actually squinting at, is delegation versus decision. That same 2005 opinion was careful to say the president can direct someone else to move the pen, but he still has to be the one who decided to sign in the first place. An autopen can carry out a president's will. It cannot generate one. So the entire fight over Biden's pardons — Fauci's included — isn't really about the pen at all. This week's entry comes from Oxford, England, home to one of the oldest and most storied debating societies on the planet, where the president of the Oxford Union said the quiet part out loud with a clarity her critics could never have manufactured for her. Back in June, the Oxford Union hosted a debate on the motion "The West is Right to be Suspicious of Islam." Arguing in favor were activist Tommy Robinson and actor Laurence Fox. Arguing against were former Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg and the Union's president, Arwa Hanin Elrayess, a Palestinian Muslim student. The debate was contentious well before anyone said a word — protesters blocked entrances, a scheduled speaker for the opposition couldn't get into the building, and the whole event had already survived a campaign to cancel Robinson's invitation outright. The debate happened. The recording sat mostly unnoticed for weeks. And then it surfaced, and one line from Elrayess, delivered directly to Robinson, started making the rounds: there is a crowd outside "rioting against you tonight," she told him, and without the protection and generosity of "a Muslim Palestinian president and the mostly South Asian executive committee, you would be quite literally cooked." Read that sentence again, slowly, because it deserves it. The president of the Oxford Union — an institution that has hosted prime ministers, dissidents, and controversial speakers of every stripe for two centuries specifically because Britain used to believe in letting people argue in public without fear of a mob — told a guest speaker that his physical safety that evening depended on the goodwill of the people running the room. Not on police. Not on university security, whose entire job that night was ostensibly to do exactly that.
