The 6th Round Post-Fight Show

UFC Vegas 120 was not a good card on paper, but in practice, we got treated to a decent card with quite a few finishes. That’s how these shows tend to go, though. You book a bunch of lower tier fighters and older guys/gals and you end up with some highlight reel moments. It’s not that we don’t appreciate them for what they are, it’s that we’re supposed to get higher quality matchups then the ones we normally get, being that this IS the UFC. The undercard finishes began with Julianna Miller submitting Ravena Oliveira via rear naked choke in the second round. Miles Johns would score a nice first round TKO of Gianni Vazquez to keep the ball rolling. Jose Montanha choked out Louie Sutherland, also in the first round. Diyar Nurgozhay got the buzzer-beater TKO of Bruno Lopes in the first round to close out the finishes for the prelims.Ty Miller and Billy Ray Goff had a spirited fight but Miller would take the win via TKO in the third round. Yadier Del Valle needed just 15 seconds to send Darren Elkins off to retirement. Thank you for all the damage done and taken, Mr. Elkins. Quillan Salkilld defeated Mateusz Gamrot bvia rear naked choke in the first round, securing his place as the next big thing and closing out the main card with a bang. UFC Freedom 250 was every bit the spectacle it was made out to be. It had everything from fireworks to Tyson Fury getting his own special walkout. Why, you ask—who knows, but it was a thing that happened. All the brass showed up including Hunter Campbell, Nick Khan and Ari Emanuel. The crowd on the Ellipse was massive, and the crowd sitting cageside consisted of military members and first responders decked out in their uniforms. The orchestra sounded amazing and the music was as all-American as apple pie. Even when this very MAGA outfit played YMCA—one of the most recognizable gay anthems ever. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say they think they’ve claimed it for themselves.The card opened with Diego Lopes absolutely destroying Steve Garcia. The first round was a bit tentative, but the second was where all the action went down. Lopes would stop Garcia with a barrage of punches that put his lights out. That was followed by Bo Nickal stopping Kyle Daukaus in the first with a nice TKO.Michael Chandler never stood a chance against Maurio Ruffy. Ruffy was patient as Chandler evaded him, taking forever to get close enough to engage, but when it finally happened, Ruffy punished him with spinning head kicks and hammering punches. Finally, mercifully, Mauricio finished him off toward the end of the round via TKO. Michael Chandler is truly washed.Josh Hokit might be a gross character with absolutely no vocal talent, but he had the exact recipe to dispatch Derrick Lewis. He punished Lewis on the feet, who was completely exhausted before the first round was over. Hokit would finish him in the second via TKO, likely increasing his UFC stock in the process.Sean O’Malley was dominant with his striking all the way through his fight with Aiemann Zahabi. Zahabi used a leg kick assault, that wasn’t as effective as he’d hoped. Sean found his moment with a big left, followed it up with a giant right then saluted the crowd as Zahabi fell back. The Petr Yan callout happened, as expected, and you have to believe that fight will happen sometime this year.Cyril Gane took some hard low kicks and one or two big punches over the course of the first round against Poatan. The second round, however, was an entirely different story, as he tuned up Alex Pereira, mauling him with big strikes, knocking him down and raining ground and pound like a man possessed. Herb dean would let it go on though, and over the course of the next 45 seconds, Gane beat Alex as if he stole his lunch money on the playground. The end was inevitable and it came via TKO. Poatan is a 205er.Justin Gaethje was a huge underdog going in, so it is a fitting end that he walks away tonight with the undisputed belt. The fight was back and forth, with Topuria almost finishing Justin in the second, and Gaethje wrecking Ilia in the third. Topuria’s face was a red mask of destruction. The doctor’s came in before the fourth, almost stopping the fight but Marc Goddard had the physicians reassess and they let it move forward. UFC 328 was a genuinely good card on paper and it delivered plenty of action in practice too. Baisangur Susurkaev defeated Djorden Santos via rear naked choke to kick off our finishes, but he had a lot of folks worried up to that point. Jim Miller proved once again that he feasts off any mistake, instantly capitalizing and making Jared Gordon tap out to a guillotine. It really is Miller Time tonight. Grant Dawson would keep the submissions rolling with a nice rear naked choke of Mateusz Rebecki.Yaroslav Amosov continued to impress with his own submission, an anaconda choke of Joel Alvarez. I look forward to his next fight because it’s always nice to see an outsider come in and wreck shop. Ateba Gautier’s sweet KO of Ozzy Diaz rounded out the prelims, and is no doubt giving the brass another great finish to consider for one of the big bonuses.King Green kicked off the main card with a submission win over Jeremy Stephens. Yep, you read that right, King Green scored a rear naked choke at 4:20 of the first round. The jokes write themselves here. Joshua Van defended his belt in one of the best fights of the year, an action-packed firecracker. The end would come in the fifth round, a TKO that finally put Tatsuro Taira down for the night, even though he clearly wasn’t ready for the fight to be called. Absolute barn-burner. In the main event, Chimaev would come out strong in the first round, absolutely smothering Strickland for the entire round. But, as history has shown us, Khamzat has the gas tank of a fruit fly and blew his wad in the first, and Sean would handily take the second round. It would take the rest of the fight for him to regain some semblance of his cardio, but never enough to have a truly dominant round, and not enough to get Strickland back down for any significant amount of time. It ended up costing him the win, as the two “standing and banging”—she said using her heaviest quote fingers—was what we got for the last three rounds, and the split decision favored Sean. UFC 327 was a really solid card on paper and it delivered some solid moments in practice, too. Vicente Luque defied oddsmakers when he not only defeated Kelvin Gastelum, he stopped him in the second with a pretty gnarly D’arce choke. Tatiana Suarez kept her streak alive when she choked out Loopy Godinez in the second round, and Mateusz Gamrot put an early end to Esteban Ribovis’ night with an arm triangle to wrap up the best moments of the prelims. The main card opened with Cub Swanson stopping Nate Landwehr in the first round—a picture perfect ending to a great career. Josh Hokit and Curtis Blaydes didn’t end in a finish, but it was a decent enough fight with plenty of action that saw Hokit scrape by on the score cards. Paulo Costa defeated Azamat Murzakanov via headkick TKO in the third round after looking like he’d exhausted himself shortly before was absolutely not on my Bingo card. Finally, in the main event, a hobbled Carlos Ulberg knocked out Jiri Prochazka in the first round, a testament to willpower and resolve. Jiri, after seeing that Ulberg’s right knee was injured, started pointing to the mat ala Max Holloway, but he didn’t follow through, instead leaping away when the going got tough. It was like the fight gods were sick to death of being invoked with such casual disregard and ruled in Ulberg’s favor. UFC 326 started with a bang when Rodolfo Bellato stopped Luke Hernandez via TKO after a spirited first 90 seconds. Hernandez, who was touted as being a great prospect, didn’t manage a great look for very long. Alberto Montes subbed Ricky Turcios with a D’Arce choke to grab the only other finish on the undercard. And Cody Garbrandt, who was definitely on his way to a 29-28 loss, ended up getting fouled multiple times with kicks to the pills (the second one even made poor Cody vomit right in the octagon), resulting in Xiao Long losing two points and the fight.The main card saw Gregory Rodrigues waste very little time in sending Brunno Ferreira to the land of wind and ghosts, KO’ing the man in under 2 minutes. Drew Dober would follow with a TKO of Michael Johnson in round two. Raul Rosas Jr. dominated Rob Font to take a lopsided unanimous decision, and Caio Borralho followed suit with a lopsided unanimous decision of his own over Reinier de Ridder.In our final bout, we saw an absolute blowout by Charles Oliveira. He dominated Max Holloway from the jump all the way to the final bell. Chucky Olives looked sensational and now has the BMF belt. UFC Mexico didn’t look great on paper but we did get some great moments in reality and it started with the very first bout on the card. Damien Pinas stopped Wes Schultz in opening stanza, showing fight fans that Aruba isn’t just for vacations in the sun. Francis Marshall would submit Erik Silva in the first round, and Javier Reyes would make quick work of Douglas Silva de Andrade via TKO.Lacy Chiasson would take her third, straight defeat, this time at the hands of Ailin Perez, a much smaller woman who bullied her for most of the fight. One has to wonder if Lacy has hit her ceiling. Ryan Gandra finishing Jose Medina was a pretty easy prediction for many, and Gandra did it in just 41 seconds to round out the prelims.The main card saw Imanol Rodriguez stop Kevin Borjas late in round two via TKO, and King Green scored a second round TKO over Daniel Zellhuber. One has to wonder if Daniel has also found his ceiling, as this marks his third, straight loss. UFC 325 wasn’t built the same as its predecessor, sacrificing quality to ensure local favorites were featured prominently on the card, and having a main event that kind of makes no sense. But that doesn’t mean the event was a bust—quite the opposite. The undercard saw an even mix of finishes to decisions, and some fresh ROAD to UFC talent to keep our eye on in the future.The main portion of the card bore witness to Quillan Salkilld embarrass Jamie Mullarkey in about three minutes flat, proving the gigantic gulf in the odds was justified. Tai Tuivasa took his sixth, straight loss at the hands of Tallison Teixeira, and it was as depressing as you might assume, for those that didn’t watch. UFC has to let Tai go and stop embarrassing him in front of his people.Mauricio Ruffy took Fiziev nearly to the end of round two, then decided he would end Rafael’s suffering, scoring the TKO and sending the Azerbaijani back to the L side of the column. Benoit Saint-Denis put a whooping on Dan “Prostituta” ← (IYKYK) after a first round of Hooker besting him with body kicks and guillotine attempts. The second round was a different story once BSD got the Aussie down, raining down elbows and strikes of all kinds, bloodying the man to the point that Herb Dean stepped in to wave the fight off.Alexander Volkanovski proved once again that he’s the featherweight kingpin. He damned near got a shutout, but I gave Diego Lopes a narrow round 2, as did two of the judges. The third judge gave Volk a perfect 50-45, which was also acceptable, as many fans and pundits did. It was a terrific contest, though, and Lopes never looked like he was out of it. He never gave up trying to get the fight finished, yet still couldn’t solve the riddle. On to the next one. UFC 324 was ravaged by injury before it ever got off the ground. A few weeks out, we lost Kayla Harrison vs. Amanda Nunes. On weigh-in day, after successfully making weight, Cameron Smotherman stepped off the scale, took a few steps and then faceplanted, busting open his chin which ended up requiring stitches. This morning, just hours before the event’s kickoff, we lost yet another bout, this time due to suspicious betting activity which later revealed Alexander Hernandez was injured, so his bout vs. Michael Johnson was canceled. Rocky start to a billion-dollar-per-year deal.The card itself was pretty good, with the prelims seeing four straight finishes. Considering that the bonuses have doubled now, and there’s added incentive ($25K bonus for all finishes that didn’t already earn a standard bonus) to get a finish, perhaps a fire has been lit under our modern day gladiators. And may I just say that the old guys really do find some magical reserves because Nikita Krylov certainly did.The rest of the fights, save one, went the distance, with Silva-Namajunas being closer than I thought it would be. Nurmagomedov predictably routed Figueiredo, as O’Malley did with Song Yadong. The lone finish was Cortes-Acosta sending Derrick Lewis to the land of banana peels and loss. Gaethje-Pimblett was an absolute banger—not exactly a classic, mainly because there was an abundance of chicanery with eye-pokes, low blows and just wild striking, but still very good. Paddy has no quit in him and Justin can still crack. It was very clear that the significant strikes were very different for these gents, with Gaethje’s being far more impactful. Oh yeah, some brave person put $1.3M on Paddy to win, so there’s that. UFC 323 delivered big in their last PPV event ever (or so they say). It had all the hallmarks of a great event going in with solid matchmaking and terrific stats on paper, and the action and skill level we were treated to surpassed our expectations. Nine finishes on a 14-fight card was just the beginning of the bonanza, as we also bore witness to a comeback story that might end up being called a fight of the year. Petr Yan gave a masterclass on how to defeat Merab Dvalishvili and ended up reclaiming his belt in spectacular, high level fashion.Joshua Van took the belt from Alexandre Pantoja, but it was in an anti-climactic, depressing way. Alexandre went to post on his left arm on his way down to the canvas and let’s just say it didn’t cooperate, snapping the entire wrong way, grossing out multitudes of fans in the process. Henry Cejudo put on a valiant effort in his bout with Payton Talbott, but was no match for the younger man, losing convincingly, despite a warrior’s performance. He retired in the cage and the promotion sent him off with a montage video. Hopefully he’s actually made enough to retire for real this time.Tatsuro Taira defeated Brandon Moreno via TKO, and while some declared the referee’s call a mite early, it wasn’t egregious and the result would almost undoubtedly have been the same if it had gone on much longer. Taira was teeing off and Moreno wasn’t putting up much in the way of defense. UFC 322 looked terrific on paper, and in practice, it delivered several highlight reel moments. Benoit Saint Denis starched Beneil Dariush in just 16 seconds to open the main card. Not to be outdone, Carlos Prates became the first person to ever knock out Leon Edwards. Then Michael Morales stopped Sean Brady inside the first round. That was followed by Valentina Shevchenko absolutely dominating Zhang Weili from bell to bell. It was so lopsided I felt sorry for Weili. Finally, we saw another lopsided beatdown in the main event when Islam Makhachev 50-45’d Jack Della Maddalena across the board to win a second belt. It was a mauling that even John Pork had a hard time watching. UFC Vegas 110 looked promising on paper, with solid alternative stats and suitable matchmaking. It wasn’t gonna set the world on fire, but it was decent enough. Fast forward to the event in actuality and you get a mixed bag with a possible fixed fight, another eye poke and follow-up questionable reffing to put the sour cherry on top of the sawdust cake. But Sedriques Dumas got beat up and that almost tips the scales back to good. And we also were rewarded with a lot of submissions, so the night wasn’t exactly terrible. UFC Vancouver saw the favorites winning for the most part in a fairly decent night of fights, considering how dismal it looked on paper. That said, the biggest surprise was Reinier de Ridder’s cardio absolutely shitting the bed, to the point where he was dominated from rounds 2-4 and ended up having his corner not send him out for round 5. Brendan Allen put a whooping on him. Drew Dober turned his fortunes around when he finished Kyle Prepolec, and Aoriqileng smoked Cody Gibson in 21 seconds. Manon Fiorot and Charles Jourdain also notched finishes in their respective fights. The worst part of the entire show was when Dan Miragliotta’s awful refereeing nearly ended up costing Kyle Nelson a TKO. Send that man back to school! UFC 320 was terrific on paper and delivered great moments in practice. Alex Pereira reclaimed his belt in under two minutes. He charged Ankalaev and scored the TKO lightning fast. Merab Dvalishvili almost knocked out Cory Sandhagen, then let him recover enough to take a round off him. He would end up victorious, proving that he’s likely the best bantamweight the UFC has ever seen. Jiri Prochazka fought like a kid practicing his Kung Fu Theater moves and ended up taking a beating through two rounds. Finally, when Rountree had gassed, Jiri turned up the weird energy and ended up getting the TKO in the third, leaving Khalil a bloody mess. UFC Noche didn’t have the star quality it should have for a card of the magnitude a “Noche” event is supposed to but it did deliver action in some of the fights. From the opening bout, we were treated to an electrifying TKO from Daniil Donchenko, and another from Alden Coria. For comic relief, we were treated to Dominick Cruz thinking Alice Periera was actually Aline Pereira, and we didn’t have to watch an entire Sedriques Dumas bout since that one ended in a NC thanks to an accidental low blow.Dusko Todorovic finally got the slump-breaker he desperately needed when he finished Jose Medina and Tatiana Suarez scored a unanimous decision over Amanda Lemos. Quang Le got starched and Alex Hernandez beat Diego Ferreira within an inch of his life thanks to a referee that clearly liked live action snuff films.Kelvin Gastelum won a fairly comfortable decision over Dustin Stolzfus and can now go back to the buffet with his crazy hot wife. Rafa Garcia stopped Jared Gordon in the third, and Rob Font got outworked by David Martinez who took the win via unanimous decision. Finally, the last Fighting Nerd with an undefeated UFC record got starched with a spinning elbow dealt by Diego Lopes, thus sealing the fate of the once undefeated team (inside the octagon). UFC 319 had some great moments leading up to the main event with several highlight reel finishes. Anthony Hernandez putting a surprise whooping on Chase Hooper, Joseph Morales making his second stint in the UFC count in a big way, Oleksiejczuk and Susurkaev both getting the job done inside the distance, as well. The prelims were definitely to be celebrated.When we got to the main card, we were on a nice little adrenaline high, and here comes Tim Elliott taking out Kai Asakura like the stealthy spoiler he is. What are we to do with Kai after this? Carlos Prates put the nicotine beating on Geoff Neal and Lerone Murphy sent the angels out with their bugles for poor Aaron Pico.And then there was the ugliest main event to ever exist. Was Chimaev dominant? Yes he was. Did he even try to press further for a finish? No he did not. Was Dricus fighting like he was just pulled from the 7-Eleven? Yes he was. Am I excited by the prospect of Khamzat dominating the division? Ben Cartlidge had fans on social media ready to riot after his judging on two of the cards, but the most egregious of them was definitely Johns vs. Matsumodo. Outside that, we saw Andre Fili stay true to his pattern of alternating wins and losses for the last six years. We also got to see one…

UFC 318 gave us lots of tremendous moments, starting with six finishes. That’s right, folks, the first six fights were all finishes. As a matter of fact, they would be the only finishes, too, as the next eight went to decision. We had some real bangers though, leading from the top with Poirier-Holloway. What a scrap, but it would be Holloway leaving with his arm raised. The tribute to Dustin was well-done and had many in the arena crying, and even some outside the arena.Other notable bouts were Kevin Holland’s battle with Daniel Rodriguez, which saw both men nearly finished, but it would be D-Rod clinching the victory. Paulo Costa looked great against Kopylov, which wasn’t hard to do since Roman seemed to get his gameplan from his mom, because he looked awful and didn’t come alive until late in the third. Patricio Pitbull captured his first victory inside the octagon with a solid win over Dan Ige. Wish he could’ve gotten to the UFC before his prime was spent, but he got the W, and that’s what counts. UFC 317 looked great on paper and delivered in practice, as well. Ilia Topuria became the tenth man in UFC history to claim a title in a second division, and he did it in devastating fashion, knocking Charles Oliveira out cold. And he did it inside the first round, as he predicted. The brass has a rare opportunity here with Topuria and they should get behind him with every ounce of their marketing heft. This guy will be selling out arenas and making PPVs soar. And the way he torched Paddy Pimblett during their in-cage faceoff was hilarious.Alexandre Pantoja put an end to Kai Kara-France’s title hopes with a third round submission, setting the UFC flyweight record for most finishes. After Joshua Van’s terrific win over Brandon Royval in a fight of the year performance, Van and Pantoja also faced off in the cage, confirming they will be battling for Pantoja’s belt next. UFC Vegas 107 looked absolutely awful on paper, but in practice, we did have some exciting moments. The ladies’ fights were somewhat underwhelming, though. Alice Ardelean defeated Rayanne dos Santos, which wasn’t a terrible watch and even won FOTN. However, Macy Chiasson vs. Ketlen Vieira was a complete slog of a contest that saw Vieira victorious. Side note: Chris Leben turned in an awful score card for that fight.Dusko Todorovic was bested by Zachary Reese in another ho-hum bout of no consequence. On the prelims, we were treated to just one finish, courtesy of Jordan Leavitt. The main card saw more action with finishes from Dustin Jacoby and an incredibly violent one from Ramiz Brahimaj, who looked like he was trying to rip Billy Ray Goff’s head off his body. If you’re wondering about Blanchfield vs. Barber, that fight got canceled due to a medical issue with Maycee Barber. That’s right, folks, the main event got scratched mere moments before Barber’s walkout (Blanchfield made the walk). Hopefully, Maycee makes a full recovery and Erin gets her show and win money. UFC 315 delivered some terrific finishes and good fights on the undercard. We saw Bruno Silva felled for the first time in a terrifying finish that left him with a dented skull (think Cyborg Santos vs. MVP). Silva left the arena on a stretcher. We also bore witness to Jessica Andrade being swarmed and finished in under three minutes, and without ever landing a shot on Jasmine Jasudavicius. And Mike Malott destroyed Charles Radtke destroyed in the second round, bouncing his head off the canvas.The main card opened with Benoit St. Denis struggling to finish Kyle Prepolec, despite overwhelming odds in his favor. BSD did get it done, but Prepolec acquitted himself well. Natalia Silva gave a masterclass, defeating Alexa Grasso 30-27 across the board and showing that she is very much ready for the next title shot. Jose Aldo looked fantastic in the early goings of the fight, but his cardio left him in the third, and Aiemann Zahabi mounted him and rained down punches for more than half the round, cutting Jose open and winning the fight. Aldo placed his gloves in the center of the cage and promptly retired after saying that he doesn’t think he has it in him anymore to keep fighting. End of an era.Valentina Shevchenko and Manon Fiorot went to war but it would be Valentina who scored a knockdown and had the better night overall, so she retained her belt via unanimous decision. And finally, Jack Della Maddalena toppled Belal Muhammad, turning him into a bloody mess by the final seconds of the fight. He’d take a unanimous decision and the belt after a spirited battle. UFC Des Moines looked like a glue factory convention on paper and it delivered that same energy in practice. Were there a few good fights? UFC 313 looked decent on paper but in practice, it wasn’t much to write home about. We did get four great finishes and a banger from Gaethje-Fiziev, but the main event was anti-entertainment. It was a dud of a fight that saw Ankalaev hug his way to a title. Jalin Turner declared he was retiring, but King Green said he wasn’t—both were finished in the first round of their respective fights. The ones that would’ve seen Max Holloway and Robert Whittaker leave the octagon victorious. Instead, they were finished, and they were violent finishes, to boot. Topuria never opened his mouth the entire fight. Cardio through the roof and I’d imagine his pulse rate hovered in the triathlete range. Holloway’s lauded cardio never failed him, but he was definitely breathing out of his mouth by round 2. Many foretold Topuria’s win, but to actually watch Max get finished was still sad to behold.Whittaker endured an onslaught of heavy pressure from Chimaev right from Jump Street and even made some narrow escapes but Khamzat was not to be denied. He took Rob’s back and locked in a face-crank, forcing an immediate tap. Why so fast, Rob? That answer came soon after when Rob pointed to his jaw. Later photos would reveal the crushing devastation Chimaev wreaked upon Whittaker’s jaw. Broken in at least two places. A pretty underwhelming Noche UFC card didn’t deliver the action where the two title fights were concerned, but up to that point, we had a great run of fights, even if there was a dearth of finishes. There were only two finishes on the entire card. We did get a contender for round of the year (the decade even) with the third stanza of Zellhuber vs. Ribovics, which was an outstanding contest. The production pizzazz didn’t really kick in much until the main card, aside from some color changing displays and the unique ring girl costumes, but once the main card got underway, we were treated to the dazzling AI displays in full 16K that didn’t quite translate on our subpar monitors and TV screens.
