    Meta's spy tool leaks the secrets it pilfered from workers; Oracle fires 21,000, spends $70 billion on machines; firms slash hardest, gain nothing; AI shuts the door to opportunity before you knock

    A pattern keeps showing up this year, and yesterday it got harder to argue with. A profitable company sheds thousands of workers, names AI as a reason in its own paperwork, then turns around and pours billions into AI hardware. Oracle just did exactly that.Oracle puts AI in writingOracle cut about 21,000 jobs over the past year. The number matters, and so does where it came from. The company admitted in its own annual regulatory filing that AI played a part. The filing says AI deployment “may continue to result in reductions to our workforce.”The cuts brought Oracle’s headcount down to roughly 141,000 from about 162,000 a year earlier. Some teams felt it far more than others.Revenue and Health Sciences saw reductions near 30%, while cloud and AI teams were mostly spared. Oracle plans to spend around $70 billion this year building AI data centers for customers like OpenAI. The company is cutting people and building machines in the same breath.Meta’s tracking program springs a leakWe told you yesterday about Meta’s program that records employee keystrokes and mouse movements to train its AI. It seems, though, Meta paused the program after a data leak exposed sensitive worker information to the entire company.So, Meta did not stop surveilling workers because they objected to being watched. It stopped because the watching went wrong.Private conversations, performance data, and transcriptions became visible across the company. The program, launched in April, recorded keystrokes, mouse activity, and occasional screen content from US staff. A company that wants to read every click could not keep those clicks private. Workers noticed.Narrower On-rampsHere is a story about jobs that vanish before anyone gets laid off. A new report from Opportunity@Work warns that AI could wall off millions of “gateway jobs” for workers without a four-year degree.Gateway jobs are the entry and mid-skill roles people, typically without college degrees, use to climb into better pay. The report counts up to 11 million of them exposed to AI losses. Read that as the group’s own estimate, since they advocate for these workers.The report notes that 33 states have agreed to drop degree requirements from public jobs. So, AI could open these doors wider or shut them, depending on how employers choose to use it.A lot of cuts, not much payoffConcurrently, tech layoffs are running at roughly 1,100 a day in 2026, close to double last year’s pace. Meta, Oracle, and Block all point to AI.A Gartner study of 350 firms found that the companies cutting the most showed no improvement in financial returns. So the layoffs are not obviously paying off.That gap is why some economists use the term “AI washing.” It describes firms blaming AI for cuts they wanted to make anyway. Treat the daily-rate figures as estimates from layoff trackers, not exact counts.The silent killer is slow hiringLayoffs grab headlines. The bigger shift for young workers isn’t making the front page of the news. Some economists argue that AI is hurting hiring more than it is driving firings, impacting junior staff the most.Goldman Sachs research found AI trimmed monthly payroll growth by around 16,000 jobs over the past year. Companies are not always cutting people. They are choosing not to add them.One organizational psychologist put the trap plainly. “The people who get laid off don’t necessarily get the next set of jobs, because the roles are different.”India’s AI experiment on steroidsFor a wider view, look at India. Infosys, TCS, and Wipro have each rolled Microsoft Copilot out to more than 100,000 workers, over 300,000 seats combined. Wipro says its performance AI review agent cut performance-review effort by nearly 70%.At the same time, these firms are thinning out without big announcements. They lean on delayed hiring and attrition instead.The Microsoft rollout reads like a press release, so take it with a grain of sale. Nevertheless, workers get AI tools dropped onto their desks, and the company gets to do more with fewer staff. To their credit, the firms are paying for retraining.Average learning hours at TCS rose past 120 per employee this year, with Infosys up 58%.Where this leaves usSo, Oracle wrote AI into the official reason it cut 21,000 people, and a respected study found that the firms cutting hardest got nothing to show for it on the balance sheet. Companies are forming around a bet on AI, and the bet has not paid off yet for many of them.Workers, meanwhile, are mere lab rats in a grand experiment of capitalism.     Cognizant trims as India’s IT engine coolsIndia’s Cognizant rolled out an AI program it calls Project Leap. It blends worker re-skilling with job cuts. Indian newspaper Mint reported that up to 4,000 roles could go.This reaches far past one company. India’s IT and outsourcing sector runs much of the world’s customer support, clerical, and back-office work. When firms there move away from volume hiring toward productivity, the people who answer your support tickets feel it first.Net hiring across India’s top five IT firms already dropped by around 7,000 in the year ending March 2026. The volume model that built India’s white-collar middle class is winding down, and nobody has built the replacement yet.The unpaid homework problemMeanwhile, tech workers around the world are spending nights and weekends teaching themselves AI tools because they feel they cannot afford to fall behind. One engineer in Dublin built an AI agent that called US hotels and negotiated room rates for him after work. None of it was part of his job.This is the corporate overhead of the AI shift that does not appear on the ledger. The pressure to keep current moves into personal time. It lands hardest on the people who already worry most about their jobs.The skills race is real, and right now workers are paying for it with their own evenings. The Displacement Audit on Substack has an insightful article that provides an inside look on the stress this is causing IT engineers.Meta backs off its tracking toolMeta scaled back a program that recorded employee keystrokes and clicks to train its AI. More than 1,600 workers signed a petition against it. Staff in one office nicknamed it the “Employee Data Extraction Factory.” After the backlash, Meta began letting employees pause the tracking for 30 minutes at a time.The strange part is that the business is thriving even as morale sinks. Meta posted $56.3 billion in first-quarter revenue, up 33 percent. So the surveillance push was a choice made from a position of strength, not desperation, and certainly not cooperation.Middle managers in the crosshairsThe career ladder is losing a rung in the middle, too. Bloomberg reported on a widening corporate move to thin out middle management, anchored on a management manifesto from Jack Dorsey. Dorsey wants a company where an AI “intelligence layer” coordinates the work in place of managers, and individual experts decide and act on their own. The same pattern shows up across Block, GitLab, and Citigroup.For service workers, the sting is in what gets cut. The team-lead or shift-manager job was the usual step up from frontline work. That step is exactly the one companies are now pulling. Typical stories have seen the bottom of the ladder dissolved. This a chunk taken from the middle.Quiet resistance on the insideSome workers are pushing back in their own way. Fortune reported that a portion of younger employees refuse to use mandated AI tools. A few admitted to nudging their performance reviews to make the AI look less effective than it is.Surveys keep finding that workers do not reject AI itself.They reject top-down mandates, unclear rollouts, and tools that add busywork instead of saving time.Force the tools on people without training or trust, and you get resignations and quiet sabotage. The friction is a management problem dressed up as a technology problem.The other side of the ledgerScaler’s India AI Workforce Report, drawn from 11,444 professionals, found that workers who built AI skills saw real pay gains. Women who moved into AI-enabled roles reported an average salary jump of 145%. One caution here, though.Scaler sells AI training courses, so it has a stake in telling an upbeat story. Read the number as a vendor’s propaganda, not a repeatable phenomenon.Meanwhile, PwC’s 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, built on more than a billion job ads, found wages growing faster at the most AI-exposed companies. It also found a divide.Jobs that AI “professionalizes,” where it handles the routine work so human judgment matters more, are growing twice as fast as jobs it simply makes easier for anyone to do.     Robinhood cuts 10% but won't say "AI"; half your day is now spent babysitting AI; put AI on the org chart and people stop checking its work; Colorado's AI law kicks off in 7 days and nobody's ready

    Robinhood had a strange week. On June 16, the company announced it would cut about 290 workers, roughly 10% of its full-time staff. The odd part is that the company is doing well. CEO Vlad Tenev told employees in a memo that “Robinhood’s business has never been stronger.” The company reported record trading volumes in June.He framed the cuts as a way to flatten the organization and raise what he called “talent density.”Here is a detail worth noticing, though: Tenev never mentioned AI anywhere in the memo, Tech Crunch noted. He did say the company would use “frontier technologies” to push its execution further.That sounds a lot like AI without saying so.For most of this year, companies rushed to credit AI for their layoffs because investors liked the efficiency story. Now the sentiment has shifted.Blaming AI for job cuts has started to generate worker backlash. Cleverly, Robinhood appears to have read the room.Listen on Apple PodcastsA Carmaker Launches a Product, Then Cuts the People Who Support ItRivian followed a similar path with different wording. On June 16, CNBC reported the electric vehicle maker laid off hundreds of workers in its service and customer organization. The sales and marketing teams were hardest hit.Notice the timing: the cuts came one week after Rivian began delivering its new R2 SUV, the lower-priced vehicle meant to take the company mainstream. Rivian described the move as restructuring to “profitably scale our business.”An analyst at Edmunds said out loud what a lot of people were thinking. “You have to wonder to what degree they do plan on replacing those people with some level of AI and automation,” he told reporters.Rivian is pouring money into autonomous vehicle technology, including a robotaxi partnership with Uber. A company launching a product while cutting the human workforce built to support that product is a pattern service workers recognize immediately.Most of Us Now Spend More Time Managing AI Than Doing Our JobsIf you have felt lately like your job has quietly turned into babysitting AI, the data backs you up. BCG’s fourth annual AI at Work survey found that 47% of workers now spend more time managing and directing AI than doing their actual work. The June 3rd survey covered 11,749 workers across 14 markets.Frontline AI adoption hit 74%, up 23 points from last year. Among regular users, 42% report saving a full workday every week through AI. The catch is that almost no organization has figured out what workers should do with that reclaimed time.The report describes a “joy paradox”: 67% of regular AI users say the technology has improved their job satisfaction. Individual accountability for the mistakes dropped by 9 percentage points. Accountability assigned to the AI rose by 8 points.In other words, the moment a company treats an AI agent like a coworker, people stop checking its work and start blaming it when something goes wrong. At organizations that have not adopted AI, only 17% say the same. The sharpest finding involves the largest employers.At companies of 10,000 or more that use AI, 33% of workers report their workforce shrinking versus 30% reporting growth.At large companies that have NOT adopted AI, the numbers flip: 36% report hiring more workers versus 23% reporting cuts.Half of Companies Have No Working AI Policy for HRMeanwhile, SHRM’s State of AI in HR 2026 report found that 54% of organizations either have no AI policy for HR or describe the one they have as too rigid to be useful.Only 46% plan to use AI in HR at all this year.     Steady jobs are quietly turning into gig workLet me start with the story that should worry the most people. The Guardian looked at how AI is reshaping work, and the pattern is sometimes subtler than a clean layoff. The job survives, but it gets chopped into gig work. The example is Klarna.The company cut hundreds of customer service jobs in 2024 for an AI chatbot, then brought humans back a year later. The catch is how.It rehired them as contractors in what its CEO calls an “Uber type of set-up”, where the bot handles the easy questions and gig workers take the hard ones. Researchers in the piece argue that companies often keep the work but dismantle the full-time role around it, mostly to save money.Listen on Apple PodcastsThe benefits go first, and desk workers like customer service agents, copywriters, and analysts feel it soonest. The Guardian article illustrates the scale of the issue in numbers:A recent survey from Upwork found that about 60 million Americans, or 39% of the workforce, already perform freelance or gig work either full-or part-time. The fintech company Paytm is cutting about 400 roles while opening around 4,000 new ones tied to AI and merchant growth. So the work here is shifting rather than vanishing. The roles are being swapped for AI-fluent ones. If you can work alongside the tools, the door stays open.India’s offices race to write AI rulesHere is the quieter side of all this. Across India, companies are scrambling to write rules for how workers use AI. The worry is that an employee might paste customer data or a contract into a public chatbot. Under India’s data-protection law, that can carry steep penalties. So inside many offices there is now a second worry beyond layoffs.     Meta spies on staff as morale craters; Walmart swears 2M jobs safe while thinning office; Microsoft warns AI to hollow communities, then ships Copilot; Nvidia boss poo-poos AI job replacement fears

    Meta’s AI team is close to a revoltLet me start with the one everybody is talking about. Meta moved several thousand workers into a new Applied AI unit, and a lot of them are unhappy. Many describe repetitive data-labeling and forced reassignments, and a large group signed a petition against software that tracks their keystrokes and mouse movements.The company’s own technology chief, Andrew Bosworth, did something rare. He admitted the rollout went badly. He told staff that morale is near its worst in 20 years and that leadership did an “atrocious” job. He also noted that median pay slipped from about $417,400 to $388,200.His advice to nervous employees was blunt, if not a bit banal. AI won’t take your job, but someone who knows AI might.Walmart tells its workers not to worryNow to the company that touches the most lives. Walmart employs around 2 million people, and it is telling them their jobs are safe. The reassurance comes with fine print.The company is trimming corporate and middle-management roles, and its leadership has talked about centralizing its platforms as AI reshapes retail. At the same time, Walmart keeps hiring cashiers, stockers, and warehouse staff. Stores still need people on the floor every day.So the message to frontline workers is steady employment, while the message to the office is leaner teams.Microsoft’s CEO compares AI to outsourcingSatya Nadella, who runs Microsoft, warned that AI could “hollow out” whole industries the same way outsourcing once gutted manufacturing. He argued that if the value piles up in a few giant models, the politics will not hold.He pointed back to the first wave of globalization, when the GDP numbers looked fine while the damage to workers and towns ran deep.Meanwhile, Microsoft puts its Copilot assistant inside Word, Outlook, Excel, and Teams. Those are the tools millions of people open every morning.The man warning about the potential harms of AI is also the one pushing the product.State Farm agents feel betrayedState Farm licensed an AI product for all of its agent offices and raised the limit on how many offices one agent can run, from three to six. It also ended a deferred-compensation program that agents were counting on for retirement.Agents are furious, calling it a “false promise”. One mid-career agent figures the change will cost him about $1 million over ten years. The company says its agents stay central to how it serves customers.The agents hear something different. They hear a lifetime contract getting quietly rewritten.Uber cut its HR team while overspending on AIHere is a smaller story with an outsized point. Uber eliminated about 23% of its People and Places division. The group handles human resources and workplace culture. The timing raised eyebrows.The cut came days after the company admitted it burned through its entire 2026 AI coding budget in just four months. Uber says the two are unrelated and that the reorganization was about simplifying overlapping teams. Maybe so.Still, a company that spent its AI money fast and then cut the people who look after its people is going to invite questions.One loud voice says relaxAmidst the realities of companies replacing staff because of AI-related decisions, Jensen Huang, who runs Nvidia, thinks the panic is overblown.Speaking on Bloomberg on June 1, he called the idea that AI is destroying jobs “complete nonsense”. His argument is that AI makes each engineer more productive, so companies want more of them, not fewer.He is probably right that new jobs come eventually. The catch is timing. Early data shows employment for the youngest software developers falling while their older colleagues hold on.New jobs may arrive.     The layoffs don't pay off, but they keep coming; India's call centers hire 17 in nine months; Anthropic funds research into smoothing its own labor disruption; "AI-first world" is code for a layoff

    Start with a question that workers ask and executives avoid. If a company replaces people with AI, does the company actually make more money?A new analysis this week says the answer is often no. Gartner studied 350 firms and found that the companies cutting the most jobs showed no improvement in their financial returns. The cuts looked decisive. The payoff did not arrive.Listen on Apple PodcastsNevertheless, the cutting keeps going. Tech layoffs are running at about 1,115 a day in 2026, and more than half of those events name AI as a reason. The damage falls hardest on the youngest workers. The junior share of tech hiring has dropped from about 15% of jobs to 7% since 2023. Recent computer science graduates now face an unemployment rate near 6.1%. The first rung of the career ladder is the rung companies are sawing off.So who catches these workers when they fall? One of the companies building the tools just put money toward answering that question. Anthropic announced a $200 million Economic Futures Research Fund on June 10, paired with a $150 million fellowship program for early-career workers. The combined pledge reaches $350 million.Its CEO, Dario Amodei, went further in a personal essay. He argued that government should promise economic support to people displaced by AI. He floated universal basic income funded by taxes on AI companies or higher capital-gains rates.However, the clearest picture of the disruption comes from India. The country’s business-process-outsourcing (BPO) industry, the call centers and back offices that the world hires to handle routine work, added only 17 net employees in the first nine months of fiscal 2026. Not 17,000. Seventeen.For an industry that once absorbed hundreds of thousands of young graduates a year, that number marks a near-total stop. The young get hit first. One AI maker is funding the search for answers while asking the public to help foot the bill.     Wanting a human no longer protects customer service jobs; AI pays directors 62% more; India sheds 3,400 engineers off the books, senior roles down two in three; 1,115 fired daily, the AI-fluent stay

    PwC released its 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer this morning, after studying more than one billion job ads across 27 countries. The finding is that the labor market is splitting into two tracks.One track holds what PwC calls “professionalised” roles, where AI handles the routine work and people get paid for judgment, creativity, and leadership. The other holds “democratised” roles, where AI makes the job simple enough that almost anyone can step in. The first track is growing faster in both hiring and pay. The second is falling behind.PwC found that the wage premium for AI skills climbed to 62%, up from 57% a year ago. In consumer-facing industries it now tops 100%. Stated plainly, a worker who can direct AI earns far more than a worker who competes against it. (A “wage premium” is the extra pay one group earns over another for the same kind of work.)Listen on Apple PodcastsCompanies that use AI well are hiring more people, not fewer. But the same report shows entry-level jobs dividing along the same line. AI-exposed entry roles now demand skills that used to belong to senior staff. Those roles grew 35% since 2019. Ordinary entry-level roles fell 10%. Newly-minted college grads are experiencing the reduction in entry-level jobs the hard way.Meanwhile, SHRM published its 2026 job-displacement report on June 12, and its surprising finding is that the share of American jobs at high risk of automation dropped from 6% to 5.1%. That is roughly 7.9 million jobs that look safer than they did a year ago. Forrester’s 2026 CX Outsourcing Report projects that 49% of current customer service jobs will be gone by 2030.High-volume consumer contact centers face 80% AI containment within five years. Lower-volume B2B environments face roughly 70% containment because their cases require more judgment and less repetition. Before CEO Dan Schulman announced the largest round of layoffs in Verizon’s history, the company required customer service staff to participate in mandatory AI role-playing exercises. Sales representatives spent weeks interacting with an AI system the company described as a tool for improving customer service skills.A former employee reported that the sessions began six weeks before Schulman announced 13,000 job cuts and grew more intensive as the layoff date approached. Verizon said the training was not designed to gather replacement data. The returning workers will manage and coach the AI systems that replaced their former colleagues.     On June 4, Amazon gathered journalists at a fulfillment center near London to introduce the next generation of its Proteus warehouse robot. The new model can roam freely across an entire facility and take instructions in plain conversational language. Workers tell it what it needs to do.It figures out the route, the timing, and the priority on its own. Amazon also announced a plan to invest more than €10 billion modernizing its European fulfillment network and add 25,000 jobs across the continent.At roughly the same time, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy sent a memo to staff acknowledging that AI will reduce the company’s total corporate workforce over the coming years. “We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today,” he wrote.Listen on Apple PodcastsAmazon has eliminated tens of thousands of corporate positions since late 2025. The London event was a showcase for the physical side of that same process. Robots that understand plain language do not need specialized software operators. The work of directing them moves from a trained technician to anyone on the floor, and then, eventually, to no one in particular.The workforce consequences of this pattern are already visible in India, where Amazon cut 12,000 jobs in April as it redirected spending toward AI infrastructure. India’s technology job market hit a 28-month low in June, with only 93,000 active openings recorded, down 14% from May and 17% from a year earlier.IT services, the sector that built India’s modern middle class, saw openings fall 31% year over year. Entry-level positions for workers with up to two years of experience dropped to 10,000 openings, a 44% annual decline. EY India’s technology sector leader summed up the shift plainly: revenue growth is now decoupled from headcount growth. Indian IT firms are expanding output without expanding staff.The same dynamic runs through Southeast Asia, where it lands on workers with far fewer protections. A McKinsey survey found that about two-thirds of major Southeast Asian companies have already fully adopted AI or are actively expanding its deployment.At the Semicon Southeast Asia 2026 conference in Kuala Lumpur, industry leaders described the automation trend as permanent. “There is no going back,” one speaker said. An estimated 40 million gig workers across the region face direct exposure to these shifts.A World Bank report urged governments to expand AI job training and strengthen support for displaced workers, while noting that many countries in the region still lack basic AI skills education in their school systems.Japan faces the same technology at the opposite end of the demographic spectrum. Japan has an estimated 1.3 million unfilled technology positions and a labor shortage so severe that companies are deploying robots primarily because there are not enough humans available to hire.A Reuters/Nikkei survey confirmed that labor shortages, not cost-cutting, are the primary force pushing Japanese firms toward AI and robotics adoption. Toyota, Mitsubishi Electric, and Honda are scaling physical AI systems as a workforce substitute rather than a workforce reduction. Japan is the only major economy in which AI deployment functions as a solution to a labor shortage rather than a cause of one.In Africa, the problem runs in yet another direction. At the 2026 Future of Jobs Summit in Sandton, South African business leaders and policymakers described an urgent collision between a worsening unemployment crisis and accelerating AI adoption.Youth unemployment among South Africans aged 15 to 34 stands at 45.8%. The jobs that AI is beginning to reach in South Africa never fully materialized for young workers there in the first place.A report published in Ghana this week argues that Africa’s real AI labor risk is not mass displacement but a failure to build skills fast enough.     GitLab reported revenue of $264 million last quarter, up 23% year over year. It beat analyst expectations. Then it laid off 350 people.The company calls its restructuring GitLab Act 2, a repositioning for what it describes as the “agentic era” of software development, in which autonomous AI agents handle coding, reviewing, deploying, and maintaining software under human oversight. The savings from cutting 350 jobs go directly into GitLab’s AI agent platform, Duo, which generated roughly $20 million in committed recurring revenue after its first full quarter. Management expects no material revenue from Duo in fiscal 2026. A profitable company is trading its current human workforce for a product that will not pay off this year.Listen on Apple PodcastsThat pattern repeats across the industry with reliable consistency. The organization does not need to be struggling. Revenue growth is beside the point. What drives the restructuring is the calculation that AI agents will multiply productivity per remaining employee while reducing the total headcount required. GitLab is simply one of the most candid companies about naming that logic publicly.The wage data coming out of Europe and the United Kingdom shows the downstream consequence for individual workers. An Oxford University study of more than 10 million UK job postings found that candidates with AI-related skills command a 23% wage premium on average. A Master’s degree carries a 13% premium. A Bachelor’s degree carries 8%. AI proficiency now outperforms formal educational credentials in immediate labor market returns. The same research found that AI skills helped older workers and candidates without advanced degrees improve their hiring prospects substantially when those skills appeared on a resume, particularly when supported by a recognized certificate.The catch is in what happens to the workers on the other side of that divide. An IMF staff discussion note published this year finds that about one in ten job vacancies in advanced economies now demands at least one new AI-related skill. Those vacancies post higher wages. They also correlate with lower employment in occupations with high AI exposure and low complementarity with AI tools, posing direct challenges for younger workers entering those fields. The labor market is not simply rewarding AI fluency. It is simultaneously defunding the entry points that workers once used to build the experience that eventually earns those higher wages.A LinkedIn report presented at Chatham House on June 9 puts a headline number on the productive upside: AI could unlock up to $6.6 trillion in capacity for businesses in the U.S., UK, France, Germany, and India if implemented across all work tasks. The LinkedIn framing is the one corporate communications departments will circulate internally. The IMF framing is the one workers in AI-exposed roles should read alongside it. Both documents describe the same economy. They assign the gains and the costs to different people.Today, GitLab holds its Transcend conference, where the company is expected to release the next wave of its agentic AI product roadmap. The announcements will name specific developer tasks that AI agents are slated to absorb next. That list will be worth tracking closely, because each item on it represents work that currently requires a human being.The political response to all of this arrived from an unexpected direction this week. Senator Bernie Sanders announced the American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act, which would impose a one-time 50% tax on AI company stock paid in shares, depositing that equity into a public fund giving ordinary Americans voting rights, board representation, and eventually a direct payment. The proposal is built on a straightforward argument: AI is built on publicly funded research, trained on publicly generated data, and deployed in ways that displace workers who have no recourse under current law.     Uber fires HR Division; Uber's AI budget gone in four months; Manila's 2M jobs at risk; OpenAI Codex plugins target job titles; California slow-walks for AI/jobs protections

    Uber had a busy week. On June 3, the company cut 23% of its People and Places division. The division covers human resources, recruiting, workplace facilities, and corporate culture. The official explanation was organizational complexity and overlapping responsibilities. The company was careful to say artificial intelligence played no role in the decision.Days earlier, Uber’s chief technology officer disclosed the company had burned through its entire 2026 AI coding budget in four months. Ninety-five percent of Uber’s engineers use AI tools every month. Close to 70% of committed code is now generated by AI systems. Uber still lists more than 800 open positions.The company is reorganizing, not shrinking. The division being restructured happens to be the one that manages human workers. Now, AI tools handle a large share of the work human workers used to support.Earlier in the year, Deutsche Bank analysts coined a term for this pattern: AI redundancy washing. It describes companies that use AI as the stated reason for cuts when the real drivers are more complicated. The Uber case is the cleanest example yet of both dynamics running at the same time.On June 2, OpenAI announced that Codex, its AI coding agent, now has more than 5 million weekly users. Developers are still the largest group, but knowledge workers now represent 20% of users and are growing three times faster than developers.To accelerate that shift, OpenAI released six role-specific plugins targeting data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, equity investing, and investment banking. Each plugin integrates directly with coporate tools like Salesforce, Jira, and Notion. The move mirrors a similar enterprise push from Anthropic earlier this year.So, OpenAI has designed tools that approximate specific jobs. The list of roles in those six plugins covers a substantial portion of what mid-level office workers at large companies spend their days doing. One in five Codex users today is already a non-developer. That share is growing faster than any other segment.Governments in general are watching the AI drama unfold and are still moving slowly. California is moving faster than most. On May 21, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Executive Order N-6-26, directing state agencies to evaluate whether the state can update California’s WARN Act to catch AI-driven workforce reductions before they happen rather than after. WARN is the law that requires advance notice for mass layoffsRecommendations to the governor’s office are due in 180 days. A separate California bill, SB 951, would require 90 days advance notice before any AI-driven layoff affecting 25 or more workers. The federal government has no equivalent law. No employer anywhere in the United States currently faces a legal obligation to disclose whether AI drove a workforce reduction.In Europe, the regulatory picture shifted in the opposite direction. In May, the European Parliament and Council reached a provisional agreement to delay the EU AI Act’s employment enforcement deadline by 16 months, moving it from August 2, 2026 to December 2, 2027. The rules being delayed cover AI systems used in hiring, performance evaluation, worker monitoring, promotion, and termination decisions.Employers using those systems in Europe now have more time to comply. Workers in those same workplaces have 16 more months without the protections those rules would have provided.The international dimension of this story reaches further than European regulatory calendars. A Harvard Business Review analysis published June 5 argues that generative AI is dismantling the labor-cost arbitrage that built the global outsourcing industry.The AI/Labor Report is a reader-supported publication.     Graduation season arrived this year with an unusual tradition. Commencement speakers who mention artificial intelligence keep getting booed. The students are not being dramatic. The unemployment rate for recent college graduates hit 5.6% in the first quarter of 2026, the highest level in a decade outside the pandemic spike.The national unemployment rate is 4.3%. Recent graduates are now doing worse in the job market than the average American worker, which has not been the normal pattern for people with four-year degrees. The underemployment rate for new graduates reached 42.5%, the highest since 2020.Listen on Apple PodcastsGraduates expect to earn $80,004 in their first year out of college. Actual starting salaries average $56,153. Applications per job posting jumped 26% while early-career postings fell 16%.The Class of 2026 is walking into a labor market that is hiring less, paying less, and competing more than the one their older siblings entered.Remote Work Created the Problem. AI Is About to Make It Worse.The Federal Reserve Bank of New York published a study on June 1 attributing 64% of the rise in young graduate unemployment to remote work rather than AI. Companies are reluctant to hire inexperienced workers into roles where mentoring and on-the-job training are difficult to deliver remotely.Unemployment among graduates under 29 rose 20% after the pandemic. Unemployment among graduates over 29 in the same fields fell slightly over the same period.The Fed’s claim is that new workers need proximity to learn, and remote work removed that proximity. The New York Fed researchers noted their own finding may be temporary.Stanford researchers found that early-career workers aged 22 to 25 in the most AI-exposed jobs saw employment fall 16% since late 2022 even after stripping out remote-friendly roles.Nevertheless, the aphorism that arose during the peak-Covid remote work experience applies here to new job entrants: If you can do you can do your work remotely, so can a machine.Jobs Are Not Disappearing. They Are Shrinking.A May 2026 Gartner report covered by The Register describes AI’s effect on employment as hollowing out rather than elimination. AI absorbs discrete tasks within existing roles, narrows the scope of work, and compresses wages without necessarily removing the job title from the org chart.Workers whose roles depend on judgment, context, and accountability may find AI a useful tool. Workers whose roles depend on processing, routing, summarizing, and formatting are finding themselves doing less of that work, earning wages that reflect the reduced scope, and uncertain about how the change happened.Imperial College London and Microsoft jointly found that AI adoption paradoxically increases workplace burdens for workers who remain, as their jobs shift toward reviewing, verifying, and correcting the output of multiple AI agents. Gartner forecasts that new job categories will emerge from this transition by 2028 or 2029. That is a gap of two to three years during which the hollowing out continues without the offset.When Every Company Automates at Once, Everyone LosesA paper published June 3 by University of Pennsylvania researchers took at at AI FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) by herds of corporate execs as potentially harmful to their own companies interests.Each individual company rationally reduces labor costs through AI adoption without waiting to see if the AI will actually do the jobs. When all companies do it simultaneously, consumer spending contracts, revenue bases erode, and the productivity gains from automation are collectively undermined.Each company individually believes it is making the rational balance-sheet decision to lay off staff.Bureau of Economic Analysis data cited in the paper shows business investment overtook consumer spending as the primary driver of U.S. GDP growth in Q1 2026. The personal savings rate fell to 3.6% in March, its lowest since late 2022. Workers are spending down savings while companies invest upward. The productivity gains are flowing into capital formation. They are not reaching household income.The Agents Companies Are Replacing Workers With Cannot Do the WorkA CBC News investigation published June 3 pulled together the controlled performance evidence on AI agents. Carnegie Mellon’s TheAgentCompany benchmark tested 10 leading AI agent models across 175 real-world office tasks. The best-performing model completed 30.3% of tasks successfully. Gartner found AI agents produce incorrect results on office tasks roughly 70% of the time.A major AI infrastructure company stated its agents fail to produce professionally acceptable work more than 19 times out of 20.     The headline number from this morning’s government jobs report deserves a closer look before anyone feels too good about it. The economy added 172,000 jobs in May. Wall Street expected 80,000. The unemployment rate held at 4.3%. On paper, this is a strong labor market doing exactly what a strong labor market is supposed to do.On the same day that report landed, Challenger, Gray & Christmas published its May layoff data. Employers across all industries announced 97,006 job cuts in May. AI was the stated reason for 38,579 of those cuts, the highest single-month AI-attributed total since Challenger began tracking the category.Listen on Apple PodcastsThat figure represents 40% of all announced cuts in May. In January, AI accounted for 7%. The acceleration over five months is not subtle. Malaysia’s semiconductor exports reached $117 billion. Standard Chartered plans to use AI to eliminate 7,000 jobs across India, Malaysia, and Poland by 2030.The data center construction that partly offsets AI displacement in U.S. labor statistics creates no equivalent offset in Kuala Lumpur.Korea Built a Policy Architecture.     Something interesting is happening in corporate America, and it is the kind of thing that does not show up in the quarterly earnings calls where executives explain, with considerable confidence, that AI is transforming their organizations.Workers are not using the AI tools their companies bought.Listen on Apple PodcastsA Fortune report drawing on a 2025 Gallup survey found that 49% of American office workers use no AI tools at work whatsoever. Only 12% use them daily. This is, by any measure, a remarkable return on the billions of dollars companies have spent on enterprise AI licenses.A separate 2026 survey of 2,400 knowledge workers found that 29% of employees admit to actively sabotaging their company’s AI strategy. Among Gen Z employees, the generation that corporate strategists assumed would lead adoption, that figure rises to 44%. A February 2026 study found that mandated AI use is now driving resignations. Twenty-rwo percent of workers say they would consider leaving a job rather than use AI in ways they find objectionable. Workers have coined a term for the underlying anxiety: FOBO, or Fear of Becoming Obsolete.The anxiety is not difficult to follow. Companies announcing major AI investments have, with some regularity, announced layoffs in the same earnings calls. He pointed to software engineering as evidence the transformation was already well under way. He noted that Microsoft engineers now use AI-assisted coding for the vast majority of their code production.It is therefore worth examining what the controlled research shows about software engineering in particular, since that is the field Suleyman cited as his proof of concept.A randomized controlled trial published by nonprofit research organization tested 16 experienced software developers performing 246 real tasks with and without AI tools. These were not interns. Each had at least five years of experience on the specific projects they were working on. AI tools made them 19% slower. The developers themselves predicted AI would speed them up by 24%.After completing the study, having just experienced a measurable slowdown, they still believed AI had helped them, estimating a 20% improvement.A follow-up analysis by engineering research firm Faros found the same pattern at the organizational level: developers complete more individual tasks with AI assistance, but the organizations they work for deliver no faster.Anecdotally, programmers who make extensive use of AI-coding tools are finding they do not understand the programming structures and lines of code AI develops. Programmers are finding after several weeks of use they have to rewrite much of the code themselves to, first, understand the code as they would have written it originally; and, two, to make modifications to the AI-code base.As long as the code does not have to be modified, AI-coding tools save development time; for add-ons, modifications, and streamlining processes, humans must be in the loop.Suleyman’s 18-month timeline may yet prove correct. The current controlled evidence is running in the opposite direction, which is the kind of detail that tends to get left out of Financial Times interviews.Europe Adopts AI More Slowly Than the Coverage SuggestsEurostat data covered by Euronews in March 2026 found that while one-third of EU citizens used generative AI tools in 2025, fewer than half used them for work purposes. Actual workplace AI adoption across the EU sits at 15%. The firms facing the EU AI Act’s August 2 compliance deadline are, for the most part, running operations where the majority of employees do not use these tools in their daily work. India’s IT and business process management industry generates $283 billion annually and accounts for more than 7% of GDP.Niti Aayog, India’s national planning commission, projects that tech headcount may fall from between 7.5 and 8 million workers today to 6 million by 2031.But there may be a knock-on effect beyond the technology industry in the form of a “flywheel effect.” High-wage IT jobs generate spending across real estate, education, restaurants, retail, and consumer services in the cities where those workers live.CNBC’s Inside India newsletter documented how as those service jobs dissolve, the IT sector that focuses on the domestic market will shrink as well. Shrinkage further impacts the number of workers in the sectors dependent on IT-worker spend.A Counterpoint Worth Taking SeriouslyThe European Central Bank surveyed 5,000 European firms in March 2026 and found that companies adopting AI in Europe are currently more likely to increase hiring than reduce it. This stands in direct contrast to U.S. and UK data.The ECB researchers noted the result is provisional. European labor market institutions make aggressive restructuring harder. European AI adoption lags the U.S. by an estimated 18 to 24 months, so hiring numbers may be different within two years.New Payroll NumbersADP released its May employment report this morning. It showed 122,000 private-sector jobs added, the best month since January 2025. Eight of ten sectors gained. The information sector lost 9,000 jobs, a figure CNBC described directly as a possible AI impact. Pay for job-stayers rose 4.4% year-over-year.The official BLS nonfarm payrolls report for May publishes tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. Wall Street’s consensus is 80,000 jobs added. Capital Economics forecasts as few as 65,000. Companies are posting positions they are filling more slowly, more selectively, or in some cases simply not filling at all.Analysts described the pattern as a continuation of what has defined 2026: low-hire, low-fire. Job openings at their lowest since 2020. Actual hiring well below that floor. The headline number looks healthy.     A translator in Brighton, England has watched her corporate press release work disappear. A London cinematographer is retraining as an outdoor instructor for minimum wage. These are not Americans, but the pattern behind their situations is the same one reshaping the U.S. labor market.A Morgan Stanley report published in late May found that British companies that adopted AI cut their workforces by 8% in the year ending October 2025. Services make up 80% of the UK economy. That combination makes the UK the most AI-exposed major economy outside the United States. Disposable Workers are people whose employment relationship gives them no meaningful protection against restructuring decisions.When Cisco announced 4,000 cuts last month, its stock jumped 13%. The market rewarded the announcement, which tells you what the market thinks the layoffs are actually about.Osterman estimates that 35% of the American workforce now qualifies as “disposable workers.”That 35% figure is not a projection. The requirement takes effect October 1, 2026. Starting in October 2027, employers must give workers written notice before using AI tools that play a “substantial role” in hiring, promotion, or termination decisions. Violations are enforceable by the state attorney general.Harvard’s OnLabor noted on June 1 that the law puts Connecticut alongside California, Colorado, and Illinois as the only states with meaningful AI employment protections on the books. No federal equivalent exists.Instead, the Trump administration has attempted to block similar state laws through threatened loss of federal funding and litigation. The four-state patchwork is the full extent of American worker protection against AI-driven employment decisions.The EU’s equivalent rules take effect August 2. American workers employed by multinationals operating in Europe may soon have more legal protection at their European offices than at their U.S. desks.China Made It Illegal. The court ruled the termination illegal. The reasoning matters: AI adoption is a strategic business choice, not an unforeseeable event. Chinese labor law allows contract changes for unforeseeable disruptions. A planned technology decision does not qualify.Canadian legal analysts and the Global News outlet noted that the Chinese ruling reignited debate about in Canada about whether Western governments are failing workers in this area. The honest answer for Canada and the U.S. is yes. The Chinese motivation may be social stability as much as worker welfare.     The Jobs That Quietly DisappearA Yale analysis finds that the biggest labor market impact of agentic AI will not appear in layoff data. It will instead appear in opportunities that quietly disappear before anyone notices. Entry-level roles that companies stop posting. Hiring pipelines that close without explanation. First jobs that never get created.The researchers describe the average firm’s response to AI not as mass layoffs but as silently closing the door to new workers. The distinction matters because the second version produces no accountability. There is no date, no memo, no severance package, and no WARN filing.There is only a graduating class that finds the door closed when it arrives.For instance, C.H. Robinson announced it is handling 29% more freight volume today than it did in early 2019 while employing 30% fewer workers. The practical result is that the same company selling AI-powered accounting tools to small business owners just eliminated the human workforce that built those tools.Cutting the people while selling the product to the customers those people served describes how the displacement cycle closes the loop. The small business owner using QuickBooks is the customer. The QuickBooks employee who lost her job is also the customer. Wharton management professor Peter Cappelli describes the dynamic as companies announcing layoffs by claiming AI will cover the work while the AI has not yet done so.The Workers Least Able to Recover Are the Ones Nobody Is Talking AboutA Brookings Institution and Centre for the Governance of AI analysis published in February identifies 6.1 million American workers who face both high AI exposure and low adaptive capacity. These are secretaries, office clerks, payroll processors, receptionists, and tax preparers. Of these workers, 86% are women.Financial analysts scored 99% for adaptive capacity on the study’s measure. These occupations are concentrated in smaller cities, university towns, and midsized markets in the Mountain West and Midwest.These workers are not the demographic the AI labor debate centers on.     The Middle Class Is the TargetThe International Monetary Fund does not typically frame its research in personal terms. Its January 2026 “Staff Discussion Note” on AI and new job creation does. The IMF finds that in regions with higher demand for AI-related skills, employment levels are 3.6% lower in occupations that are highly exposed to AI but offer limited scope for human-AI complementarity. They put job losses on the record in a way that earnings call language does not require.The Citigroup filings this week describe tellers, back-office analysts, compliance staff, and IT support workers whose roles are being phased out as AI monitoring systems and automated processes replace them.These are the banking sector equivalents of the workers the IMF is tracking in its middle-class polarization data.The IPO Motive Behind the Week’s Altman DramaThis week began with Sam Altman speaking to a group in Sydney and saying the jobs apocalypse he had warned about had not arrived. That story, covered in Tuesday’s edition, acquired a second dimension on Wednesday.Fortune reported that both Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei have publicly reversed their most alarming predictions about AI job losses, with the timing coinciding directly with IPO preparations. OpenAI is targeting a late 2026 public listing at a valuation near $1 trillion. Anthropic is planning a 2026 offering at approximately $380 billion.Amodei previously warned that 50% of white-collar jobs faced elimination within several years. He now frames automation as a productivity multiplier. “If you automate 90% of the job,” he said this month, “then everyone does the 10% of the job.” The 10%, he argues, expands to fill 100% of what people do and multiplies their output tenfold.The argument is coherent as economic theory. His exact words were “human-level performance on most, if not all, professional tasks.” Suleyman is the CEO of Microsoft AI, a division of the company that simultaneously offers buyouts to 8,750 employees. He knows what the company’s AI systems currently do.     The Degree That Was Supposed to Protect YouFor most of the past three decades, the standard advice to American workers was direct: get a college degree, move into knowledge work, and stay ahead of the automation wave. That advice produced a generation of workers who did exactly what they were told. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York now reports that the unemployment rate for recent college graduates reached 5.6% in March, one of the highest levels in a decade outside of the pandemic. The national unemployment rate stands at 4.3%.     The Man Who Built the Fear of AI Is Now Walking It BackOpenAI CEO Sam Altman said this morning AI boom had produced no “jobs apocalypse.” He was speaking virtually at a Commonwealth Bank of Australia conference in Sydney. He said he had expected more entry-level white-collar jobs to be gone by now. He said his intuitions were “just off.” He said he was “delighted to be wrong.”Altman is the person most responsible for raising the alarm in the first place. His comments land at a specific moment, and that moment matters.On the same day, MIT Technology Review published a piece making a similar argument. Drawing on current Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the piece argues the unemployment rate for AI-exposed occupations is actually lower than for occupations with less AI exposure. Erika McEntarfer, who ran the BLS until the Trump administration fired her after a jobs report it found inconvenient, is quoted saying the evidence suggests AI’s labor market impact is “likely small right now.” She adds that “we have time to plan.”The timing of both statements on the same Tuesday is worth noting.     Standard Charter CEO creates international incident with "lower-value human capital" quip, then explains he was right; 99% of CEOs expect layoffs; MIT says AI completes most text-based tasks by 2029

    A Bank CEO Called His Employees “Lower-Value Human Capital.” Then He Apologized. Then He Explained That He Was Right.On Tuesday, May 19, Standard Chartered CEO Bill Winters stood before investors at a briefing in Hong Kong and described his bank’s plan to cut nearly 8,000 jobs by 2030. The framing he chose was precise. Winters said the cuts were not cost-cutting but rather “replacing in some cases lower-value human capital with the financial capital and the investment capital we’re putting in.”The reaction was immediate. Former Singapore President Halimah Yacob condemned the terminology publicly on Facebook, calling it disturbing to describe workers in such clinical terms. Criticism spread across social media and through Standard Chartered’s key operating hubs in Singapore, Hong Kong, and India, where senior management and staff responded with visible anger. Asian regulators held discussions with the bank following the remarks. Winters sent a memo to staff on Wednesday saying the reporting was taken out of context and that affected workers would receive good advance notice.On Friday morning, Winters posted a fresh LinkedIn message doubling down on the substance of his remarks. Hours later he posted again, this time with an apology. “My choice of words has caused upset to some colleagues. For that I am sorry,” he wrote. The message was structurally identical to Winters’ but arrived in warmer packaging. Elhedery urged staff to make sure they were not fighting the change, not disenfranchised, and not anxious or resisting. He said AI could make them “more productive versions of themselves.” He also said, plainly, that generative AI will destroy certain jobs while creating new ones.HSBC is reviewing plans to cut approximately 20,000 roles over the next three to five years, representing roughly 10 percent of its global workforce. The cuts target middle and back-office functions. The bank has appointed a Chief AI Officer and is using AI to reduce client onboarding time by 50 percent.Morgan Stanley analysts confirmed in the same week that banking, technology, and professional services firms shed one in 20 staff in the past year as a direct result of AI adoption, with offshore workers and entry-level employees absorbing the largest share of those losses. The two largest London-listed Asia-focused banks made essentially the same announcement within 24 hours. Standard Chartered named the number and used the language that caused a diplomatic incident. HSBC named the number and chose its words more carefully. The outcome for the workers affected is the same.99 Percent of CEOs Expect AI-Driven Layoffs Within Two YearsThe Standard Chartered and HSBC announcements did not arrive in isolation. Mercer’s Global Talent Trends 2026 report, drawing on surveys of nearly 12,000 executives, HR leaders, investors, and employees across 16 countries, found that 99 percent of CEOs expect corporate AI initiatives to lead to layoffs in the short term. Only 32 percent said they believed the workforce could optimally combine both human and machine capabilities.The worker side of the same survey is equally direct. Only 44 percent of employees reported thriving at work in 2026, down from 66 percent in 2024 and lower than during the COVID pandemic. Employee concern about job loss due to AI has risen from 28 percent in 2024 to 40 percent in 2026. A workforce operating at those anxiety levels cannot deliver the productivity gains executives are promising investors. That contradiction sits at the center of every AI transformation plan currently in motion.AI Is Now the Leading Stated Reason for U.S. LayoffsIn April, AI led all stated reasons for U.S. job cuts for the second consecutive month, with 21,490 announced layoffs attributed directly to AI. That represented 26 percent of all April cuts. AI has been cited for 49,135 job cut announcements so far in 2026, accounting for roughly 16 percent of all job cut plans year to date, per Challenger, Gray & Christmas.The Challenger data carries a specific limitation worth naming. It counts only layoffs in which companies voluntarily cite AI as the reason. It does not count roles eliminated through hiring freezes, contractor non-renewals, or restructurings where AI is the mechanism but not the stated cause. The actual displacement figure is larger than the Challenger number reflects.Researchers Are Now Naming the Anxiety Workers FeelMercer’s research found that 62 percent of employees believe leaders underestimate AI’s emotional and psychological impact on workers. Only 19 percent of HR leaders consider those impacts as part of their digital implementation strategy. Researchers are now proposing a clinical term for the condition: AI Replacement Dysfunction, or AIRD, describing the specific anxiety pattern produced by working in a role you believe will be automated before you can leave it voluntarily.The Standard Chartered episode illustrates why that anxiety is grounded. A King’s College London study released the same week found six in 10 Britons believe AI will eliminate more jobs than it creates, and one in five expect civil unrest as a result.     Klarna replaced approximately 700 customer service workers in 2024 with AI. Klarna is primarily known for its "buy now, pay later" business model. The company CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, trumpeted through every communications channel (including in-person conferences) the move as evidence that AI could perform at human-equivalent quality.By early 2026, the company reversed course by rehiring staff, with all the effort in interviews, re-training, and on-boarding that entails.Customer satisfaction scores deteriorated on complex service interactions. AI handled volume but not complexity. Edge cases, emotionally charged conversations, and multi-step problem resolution overwhelmed systems trained for routine queries. The cost savings projected at announcement did not materialize.Rehiring costs exceeded the original savings estimate. The story that was supposed to demonstrate AI’s capacity to replace human workers became the clearest illustration of why full replacement strategies fail.The Gartner data released last week provided the statistical frame: 80% of companies that cut workers for AI saw no correlation between workforce reduction and ROI. Klarna turns that statistic into a story. That is, we are seeing the twilight of a sector built on shipping large batches of recent Indian graduates to perform routine services work for Western clients.The European picture adds a longer-horizon frame to what is happening in real time. The German Institute for Employment Research projects that 1.6 million jobs in Germany could be reshaped or lost to AI over the next 15 years.A Carnegie Endowment analysis released in February 2026 warns that the disruption is unlikely to arrive as sudden mass redundancy, though. The more probable mechanism is incremental task substitution that progressively hollows out the scope of existing roles.Jobs would shrink before disappearing to create prolonged insecurity rather than visible unemployment. The same German analysis found women are nearly twice as likely as men to work in a role with high AI exposure.The most useful data point for understanding the week arrives from an unexpected direction.     AI "Brain Fry" exhausts the workers you need most: "You just work the same amount or more".; 80% of AI layoffs returned nothing; South Korea's 30-and-under professional services workforce disappearing

    UC Berkeley found that employees who embraced AI tools most enthusiastically did not work less. They worked more.The research team tracked workers at a 200-person technology firm over eight months, and published their findings in The Harvard Business Review.The AI tools made more work feel doable. So, workers did more.They expanded their to-do lists to fill every hour AI freed up, and then kept going. Lunch breaks disappeared. Evenings shortened.One engineer told researchers: “You had thought that maybe, because you could be more productive with AI, you could save some time and work less. “You just work the same amount or more.”An ActivTrak analysis of 10,584 workers measured what actually happened to time allocation after AI adoption. Time spent across every job responsibility rose between 27% and 346%. Focused work sessions fell 9%.Time spent on email doubled. Researchers at Boston Consulting Group named the resulting condition “AI Brain Fry.” Companies are seeing a pattern of cognitive overload in workers who must supervise multiple AI systems simultaneously. About one in seven workers surveyed reported mental fatigue from juggling AI tools. The workers most affected are the early adopters, the employees companies most want to retain.The UC Berkeley researchers identified that AI expands a worker’s sphere of accountability. Cutting workers and keeping AI returns did not correlate.Companies that showed the strongest AI returns were those that used the technology to amplify their existing workforce rather than shrink it.Gartner’s lead analyst, Helen Poitevin, stated the conclusion directly: “Workforce reductions may create budget room, but they do not create return.”Organizations that improved ROI were those that invested aggressively in skills, roles, and operating models that allow workers to guide and scale AI systems — that is, they invested in organizational change management.The companies cutting their way to AI returns are, by Gartner’s data, pursuing a strategy with a poor track record.The Wall Street Journal framed the same tension as a stark CEO choice: lay off workers or make them do more.     The week’s defining story arrived on May 8, when Cloudflare announced it was cutting 1,100 workers — roughly 20% of its workforce — on the same day it reported its best revenue quarter in its 16-year history. The company posted $639.8 million in quarterly revenue, a 34% year-over-year increase. CEO Matthew Prince told investors that internal AI usage had risen more than 600% in three months and that highly productive, AI-augmented employees simply need fewer support staff around them. When an analyst asked why the company needed to cut so deeply during its strongest quarter on record, Prince said: “Just because you’re fit doesn’t mean you can’t get fitter.”So, Cloudflare’s layoffs are a business strategy choice, and an explicit one.     Gallup’s latest workforce survey, published this week, cited that half of all U.S. workers now use AI at work.Meanwhile, only 12% of workers say AI has fundamentally transformed how their organization actually operates. Workers are using AI tools individually, for their own tasks, in their own workflows.Their employers have not figured out how to translate that individual use into organizational change. A separate survey of nearly 6,000 executives by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that 89% report no measurable effect of AI on their company’s labor productivity over the past three years.Gallup’s own analysis points to the reason. Employees are 8.7 times more likely to say AI has genuinely changed how their work gets done when their direct manager actively supports and champions AI adoption.The barrier is managerial. Manager engagement in the U.S. has fallen from 31% in 2022 to 22% in 2025. The people structurally positioned to drive AI adoption at the team level are the most disengaged group in the American workforce.The gap between adoption and transformation matters because it shapes who bears the cost of AI’s disruption and who captures its gains. The workers absorbing the most pressure right now are young workers trying to enter the labor market.Anthropic’s own research team published findings in March showing that hiring into AI-exposed jobs fell 14% for workers aged 22 to 25 since ChatGPT’s release in late 2022. Unemployment for that group is flat.The hiring door is simply closing. Young workers are being excluded from the front end of the career ladder at precisely the moment when AI is absorbing the entry-level tasks those jobs used to require.The emotional response to that exclusion is showing up in data. The generation widely described as AI’s natural beneficiaries and most fluent early adopters is turning against the technology. The reason is straightforward.They are watching it close the doors they expected to walk through.The Stanford 2026 AI Index, released April 13, documents what is opening on the other side of those closed doors.Demand for “Agentic AI” skills in U.S. job postings jumped 280% in a single year. These are skills related to managing and directing autonomous AI systems, not simply using AI tools.AI skills now appear in 2.5% of all U.S. job postings, up 55% from the prior year. System access cut off within minutes.No call from a manager. No meeting with HR. Just a brief email and a locked screen.The story spread across Reddit, LinkedIn, and Blind within hours, as roughly 30,000 employees globally — about 12,000 of them in India — tried to make sense of what had just happened. The specific detail that traveled furthest was the lockout itself.Workers described finishing their morning coffee and finding themselves locked out of the tools they had used that morning.For anyone who has ever held a job and worried about losing it, that detail feels different than reading a headcount number.It seems Oracle borrowed $58 billion in new debt over two months to fund data center construction for AI clients, including OpenAI, Meta, and Nvidia. The layoffs are expected to free up $8 to $10 billion in cash flow, according to TD Cowen analysts.Oracle is not cutting because AI made those workers redundant today. Oracle is cutting because it took on massive debt and needed the payroll budget to service it. The workers are not being replaced by machines. They are being converted into debt payments.Underneath the headline numbers, a Brookings Institution study published in January draws a distinction that most AI coverage misses entirely.An important aspect of the the study is the concept of “AI exposure:” How much of your job AI can technically perform. The study relates AI exposure to “adaptive capacity:” a person’s actual ability to find new work if they lose theirs.Most of the 37 million highly exposed U.S. workers have reasonable adaptive capacity. They have savings, transferable skills, and labor markets dense enough to absorb a transition. But 6.1 million workers have high exposure and low adaptive capacity simultaneously. Those workers are primarily in clerical and administrative roles. They are secretaries, HR clerks, medical assistants, and tax preparers. Roughly 86 percent of them are women.They tend to be older, have limited savings, and live in smaller labor markets in the Western Rocky Mountain states and Midwest where retraining options are thin.A follow-up Brookings analysis published last week sharpens the picture further. Of the workers with both high exposure and low adaptive capacity, 67 percent are: workers who built their skills through trade, military service, or on-the-job experience rather than a four-year degree.     Snap announced on April 15 that it will cut roughly 1,000 employees and cancel more than 300 open positions, reducing its global workforce by 16 percent. CEO Evan Spiegel told staff the company expects to save more than $500 million annually from the cuts. Snap’s stock rose on the news.The company said the savings will fund AI infrastructure investments. The news fits a market pattern: Snap’s stock rose on the announcement, which means investors are rewarding the conversion of payroll into AI spending. That financial incentive now applies to every publicly traded company watching Snap’s share price.The broader jobs picture looks calmer on the surface. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the U.S. economy added 178,000 jobs in March, and the national unemployment rate edged down to 4.3 percent. Those headline numbers are healthy by recent standards.Underneath them, though, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that workers aged 22 to 27 face an unemployment rate of 5.6 percent, well above the national figure.The reason is structural. AI now handles the codifiable tasks that entry-level jobs used to provide: drafting basic documents, producing standard reports, running routine analysis.Employers are keeping experienced workers and letting AI absorb the on-ramp that younger workers traditionally climbed. The headline unemployment rate looks fine. The entry-level job market is a different story entirely.IBM is reading that situation as a strategic risk. The company has tripled its entry-level hiring in 2026, bucking the prevailing industry trend.IBM argues that eliminating junior roles produces short-term savings but destroys the pipeline that generates experienced workers and managers five years down the road.A company that stops hiring entry-level workers today will face a serious leadership gap in the future. IBM is also arguing that AI tools still need human direction, judgment, and context.The tripled hiring is a bet that applied AI literacy combined with human judgment produces better outcomes than AI operating without new staff.Whether other major employers follow that reasoning, or continue optimizing for immediate cost reduction, will shape the career prospects of an entire generation.The European Central Bank published research this week drawing on surveys of more than 5,000 euro-area firms. The finding is that companies actively investing in AI are 4 percent more likely to add headcount than their non-AI peers.The employment benefit shows up primarily at small firms. Large firms show a neutral effect. The ECB’s explanation is that AI investment tends to accompany business growth, and growing businesses hire people.That dynamic holds in Europe’s current environment. The important caveat is the phrase “for now.” The ECB economists are describing short-term outcomes in firms that are still early in their AI adoption. The same firms that are hiring today may face different pressures once AI capabilities mature further.The most striking labor story of the week came out of China.     The economists who understand technology best cannot agree on whether AI is the sixth act in a 250-year story of progress, or the first act of something history has no name for yet.It is the central fact of the labor market in 2026. On one side, Morgan Stanley published a careful analysis this week tracing five major innovation waves across 250 years.Chief U.S. Economist Michael Gapen is explicit that those waves “are disruptive, capital-intensive and often volatile. They can displace workers, concentrate gains early and provoke political backlash. But over time, they raise productivity, restructure labor markets, expand output and, when institutions adapt, improve living standards broadly.”The phrase “when institutions adapt” is doing enormous work in that sentence. The history bears the caveat out. Real wages in Britain barely moved during the first 80 years of industrialization, a period Acemoglu and Johnson document in Power and Progress as a sustained collapse in working conditions for the people inside the transition.Child labor, 14-hour shifts, and unsafe factories were the daily reality, not a deviation from it. The right to organize, factory safety laws, and meaningful limits on working hours took another 50 years to win after that.The “long run” in Morgan Stanley’s framing was, for actual workers, roughly a century and a half of paying the cost for gains that would eventually reach their great-grandchildren.On the other side of the argument, three of the most influential labor economists alive, Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and David Autor, published a direct challenge to the historical optimism this week. Their argument is that “pure automation technologies” do the opposite of collaborating with workers. They “commodify human expertise, rendering it less valuable and potentially superfluous.” If they are right, the institutional adaptations that eventually rescued workers in previous waves may not have the same leverage this time.The distinction Morgan Stanley draws between augmentation and substitution is real and matters for how you read the current data. Morgan Stanley Research Economist Diego Anzoategui says: “The same technology that automates tasks can also augment workers, increase productivity and boost demand in AI-exposed sectors. So far, the data suggest early, narrow displacement, more visible among younger workers, while overall disruption remains limited.”That framing is accurate as a description of what the aggregate data currently shows. The Acemoglu et al paper does not dispute the current data. It disputes the inference that current patterns will hold as AI capabilities accelerate.The historical record they rely on, the same record Morgan Stanley cites, suggests that even when the long-run outcome is positive, the transition itself can immiserate two or three generations of workers before institutions catch up.The gender dimension of this debate has received far less attention than it deserves. A research brief published in March by the International Labour Organization, drawing on data from 436 occupations across dozens of countries, established a finding that changes the shape of the entire conversation.Future Forwarded is a reader-supported publication. Around 29% of female-dominated occupations are exposed to generative AI, compared to just 16% of male-dominated occupations.The difference is even starker at the highest automation risk: 16% of female-dominated occupations fall into the highest exposure categories, compared to only 3% of male-dominated ones.The International Labor Organization (ILO) traces this gap to a structural feature of the labor market that predates AI entirely. Women are heavily concentrated in clerical, administrative, and business support roles, such as secretaries, receptionists, payroll clerks, and accounting assistants. Many of the tasks are routine and codifiable and therefore at higher risk of substitution by generative AI.By contrast, men are more represented in construction, manufacturing, and manual trades, where tasks are less easily automated.The problem compounds at the other end. The jobs being created by AI adoption, the ones carrying wage premiums and growing demand, are concentrated in engineering, cloud architecture, and AI development.Globally, women accounted for only about 30% of the AI workforce in 2022, only 4 percentage points higher than in 2016. The displacement risk is concentrated where women work. The opportunity is concentrated where women are underrepresented.That structural mismatch does not resolve itself through retraining programs: of the workers most at risk of losing their jobs due to AI, more than 6 million would likely struggle to cope because they are older, have limited savings, and face other barriers.Most of those workers are in clerical and administrative jobs, roles that have historically been dominated by women.The ILO’s senior economist Janine Berg put the core policy question plainly: The impact of generative AI on women’s jobs is not predetermined. “With the right policies, social dialogue and gender-responsive design, we can avert reinforcing existing discrimination,” she said.If the policy choices are not made, the default outcome is an AI transition that widens the existing gender wage and employment gap.The Morgan Stanley historical analysis and the Acemoglu et al warning are not actually incompatible once the timeline is named honestly. They operate at different scales. Morgan Stanley’s data describes what aggregate labor markets are showing right now, and what historical patterns suggest about century-scale outcomes.Acemoglu et al are describing the mechanism by which this wave could compress or extend the brutal middle period, the part where workers absorb the cost while waiting for institutions to catch up.Both can be true simultaneously: the long-run historical record is broadly positive, and the transition itself can take three generations and require sustained political struggle to make those gains reach ordinary workers.The American Enterprise Institute frames the burden of proof as belonging to what it calls “the discontinuity camp,” whose case “rests more on what AI could theoretically do than on what labor markets are actually showing.”That framing is fair given the current aggregate data. The ILO gender numbers suggest, however, that for specific populations of workers, the discontinuity may already be arriving.     Two developments this week force a question that labor economists have mostly avoided: what happens when AI stops assisting human workers and starts replacing the judgment calls at the core of their jobs?The first development is a legal one; the second, a technology one.In the first instance, plaintiffs in the landmark case Mobley v. Workday, Inc. filed an amended complaint in late March 2026. The complaint revived California state claims and a physical disability discrimination count after a federal judge’s ruling kept core federal age discrimination claims alive.The case involves Derek Mobley, an African-American man over 40 with anxiety and depression. He applied for more than 100 jobs through companies using Workday’s AI-powered applicant screening tools. He was rejected every time, sometimes within minutes of applying.A federal court has allowed discrimination claims against Workday’s AI screening tools to proceed on an unprecedented “agent” liability theory. The case is advancing primarily on age discrimination under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. The outcome of the case could impact the lives of hundreds of millions of job applicants.The case is the first major test of whether AI vendors — not just employers — can be held directly liable for algorithmic hiring bias under federal anti-discrimination law. The legal significance here is structural, not just factual. AI hiring tools are used by thousands of companies as a cost-saving measure.87% of companies are now using AI-driven tools to save time and money in the hiring process. When those tools discriminate, they do so at scale, across every employer using the same platform simultaneously.The Workday case tests a theory that has major consequences for anyone in the job market over age 40: that the vendor of the discriminating tool shares legal liability with the employer.If the court upholds that theory, it opens class-action exposure for every major HR software company operating AI screening at scale.A University of Washington study found that recruiters using biased AI tools mirrored the tool’s inequitable choices up to 90% of the time. The study illustrates that both the AI vendor and the employer carry liability.If your company runs AI applicant tracking systems without documented bias testing, adverse impact analysis, and a human-in-the-loop override, the Board is sitting on a legal exposure it did not budget for.The second development connects to the first at the level of capability.OpenAI’s GPT-5.4, released in early March, achieves a new state of the art on GDPval. GDPval is a benchmark that tests AI agents on well-specified knowledge work across 44 occupations.GDPval measures real work products: sales presentations, accounting spreadsheets, urgent care schedules, manufacturing diagrams. It is not a test of abstract reasoning. It is a test of the actual output that knowledge workers produce on a given Tuesday.OpenAI’s 5.4 model matches or exceeds industry professionals in 83% of comparisons. That’s up from 70.9% for its predecessor, GPT-5.2.On an internal benchmark simulating tasks that a junior investment banking analyst might perform, GPT-5.4 scored 87.3%, up from 68.4% for GPT-5.2. Tasks include spreadsheet modeling, scenario analysis, and data extraction.The improvement represents a 28-point gain in under four months. The rapid improvement suggests accuracy could reach human professional-levels in the high 80s or low 90s within the next year if the trend holds.So, AI tools are now being used to screen job applicants, manage HR workflows, and conduct tasks previously performed by junior knowledge workers. The Workday case reveals that those tools carry discrimination risks that no one has adequately audited.The GPT-5.4 benchmark results reveal that those tools are improving fast enough that the category of “tasks requiring human judgment” is shrinking.AI is not merely replacing tasks, but deconstructing occupations into automated and human-centric components.“Deconstructing occupations” describes something more precise than replacement. A job that used to require a human is being split into its component tasks. Some tasks go to AI.The remaining tasks stay with humans; those activities that require judgment, relationship management, or physical presence. The human does fewer things. Their employer employs fewer people.In the Gulf region, financial institutions are deploying autonomous agents to handle 80% of routine compliance and reporting. The agents enable human staff to focus on high-stakes advisory and regional strategy.The most notable change in 2026 is the move toward agentic workflows. The new gold standard for the global workforce includes:* strategic prompting and orchestration* the ability to manage multiple AI agents simultaneously* AI ethics and bias mitigation* and complex emotional intelligence , or EQSo, the Workday case is working through a legal system designed for a world where a human manager made hiring decisions. The AI tools now making those decisions at scale were designed by engineers optimizing for efficiency.The discrimination they produce is not intentional. That makes it harder to detect, harder to litigate, and harder to remedy.Colorado’s AI law, set to take effect at the end of June 2026, will require employers in the state that deploy high-risk AI systems to take “reasonable care” to protect consumers from discrimination.HR software that screens candidates, scores performance, or ranks employees is classified as high-risk AI under Colorado’s law. Colorado is the first state to impose that standard.Whether other states follow suit before the tools spread further is an open question.     AI agents replacing 95% of customer calls without humans in some companies; Indian IT WARN notices in United States layoffs spiked in Q1 2026; "new-collar" jobs pay more but require different people.

    The Indian IT outsourcing industry has been the backbone of American corporate technology for three decades. When U.S. banks, insurance companies, and healthcare systems needed to build and maintain software at scale, they turned to Indian firms like Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and Wipro. That model is now fracturing, and the fracture line runs directly through AI.An analysis of regulatory filings shows that Indian IT and business process outsourcing firms may have laid off more people in the U.S. in the first three months of 2026 than in all of 2025.WARN notices, required by U.S. law for large layoffs, have been filed by Infosys, HCL Technologies, and Hinduja Global Services across Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania. WARN notices are the formal legal mechanism companies use to notify state governments of mass layoffs 60 days in advance.The spike in filings is a documented, verifiable acceleration, not a trend based on projections. In 2024, Indian IT firms filed four WARN notices. In 2025, only Genpact filed one. But in the first quarter of 2026 alone, multiple notices have already been filed.This is a red flag for United States AI-related job cuts: Indian nationals likely do not show up in layoff statistics, as Indian IT firms may have hired them as contractors and not employees. Laid off employees can claim unemployment benefits, which appear in state and federal registers; contractors have to troll for their next gig.Indian IT companies are cutting more jobs in the U.S. mainly because AI is making some roles less necessary and big tech deals are slowing down. Most of the layoffs hit on-site workers tied to huge transformation projects.The old model worked like this: a major U.S. bank would sign a multi-billion dollar, multi-year outsourcing contract. The Indian IT firm would deploy hundreds of engineers on U.S. soil to manage the project.AI is shrinking the headcount those projects require, though. Productivity gains of up to 30% mean fewer people are needed for the same work. The industry is shifting from execution to collaboration, and the old model of deploying thousands of engineers onsite is fading.The human consequence of this shift is not simply that Indian workers lose U.S.-based jobs. While not impossible, career transitions are difficult and require time — a precious commodity in any labor market.A mid-level programmer whose role is automated may not easily transition to becoming an AI architect or a strategic advisor. The reskilling challenge is enormous. While companies are investing billions in training programs, the question is whether those programs can scale fast enough to meet the needs of displaced workers.Business Process Outsourcing — or BPO — presents the same problem at larger scale. India employs roughly 1.65 million workers in voice support, data processing, and administrative BPO roles.Startups like Bengaluru-based LimeChat are deploying AI agents that can handle up to 95% of customer queries without human assistance. “Once you hire a LimeChat agent, you never have to hire again,” said Nikhil Gupta, co-founder of LimeChat.For the businesses buying this technology, the appeal is lower costs and higher scalability. The business opportunity foreshadows lower headcounts for the 1.65 million workers whose livelihoods depend on those call center roles.Entry-level BPO roles, the foundation of the offshore talent pyramid, sit squarely in the line of fire, mirroring broader warnings that AI could dramatically shrink India’s BPO workforce by 2030.The question now being asked across the sector is whether that displacement accelerates the transition toward higher-value knowledge process outsourcing, or KPO. KPO refers to higher-complexity work like legal research, financial analysis, and medical coding. AI already handles routine data entry and customer service calls more cheaply.Stilll, human judgment still commands a premium, even if AI hollows out the talent pipeline that feeds it.The question is whether enough KPO work exists to absorb the workers displaced from the lower tier.The picture from South Asia is not entirely negative, which provides indicators for the United States labor market. In South Asia, AI-related job postings have increased, offering wages roughly 30% higher than comparable white-collar jobs.The premium for AI skills is real and documented. The problem, however, is the gap between who is losing routine BPO work and who is positioned to capture AI-adjacent roles. Those are largely different people with different educational backgrounds and different geographic locations within India.LinkedIn’s 2026 Labor Market Report, released in January and drawing on data from over 1.3 billion users globally, offers a frame for understanding the new job categories being created.AI has created demand at scale, including more than 600,000 new AI-enabled data center jobs and 1.3 million new roles.Some of the new roles include: AI engineers, forward-deployed engineers, and data annotators. AI Engineer is one of the fastest-growing jobs on LinkedIn over the past three years.This mix of uneven hiring and AI-driven job creation marks what LinkedIn among others are calling the new-collar era: a workforce that blends knowledge work, advanced technical skills, and distinctly human strengths.Take, for instance, the forward-deployed engineer role. It did not exist as a job title five years ago.
