The internet has done an admirable job hobbling the corporate left-wing media’s ability to control the population through a single narrative. But that blessing comes with regrettable costs. The speed of information and the incentive to push hot takes onto social media mean that when a public figure dies, there is an immediate race to decide which competing narrative will define his legacy. When Lindsey Graham died suddenly of heart failure over the weekend, conspiracy theories about foreign assassination plots immediately began to circulate online. Many leftists openly celebrated his death, and the reactionary impulse of conservatives drove others to recast Graham as a stalwart crusader for MAGA. The truth is more complicated. After Donald Trump’s stunning victory in the 2024 election, Democrats had to stop and ask what went wrong. One conclusion from the commentary class was that progressives had a serious man problem, and for once they were right. Democrats had made contempt for men, especially young white men, central to their message, and that came with a cost. Any white man who remained on the left had to accept that he was either uniquely guilty or expected to participate in his own dispossession. The party even launched a $20 million effort to discover why men were abandoning it, only to arrive at the familiar conclusion that men were simply bad and deserved what they got. This should have created a golden opportunity for the GOP to secure the loyalty of young men for a generation. Instead, conservatives are setting that opportunity on fire. Leo Strauss is not a name many conservatives would know, but his philosophy, and the students who follow it, radically redefined the movement. Strauss was an accomplished scholar with an interesting method for interpreting philosophical texts. Bodycam footage from the United Kingdom has turned Henry Nowak’s death from a local outrage into a national indictment. The footage appears to show officers handcuffing an 18-year-old stabbing victim, dismissing his pleas for help, and treating him as the suspect while he bled to death. Nowak, an 18-year-old from Essex, reportedly told officers, “I can’t breathe,” and “I’ve been stabbed.” Officers mocked him, denied that he had been injured, and debated whether they had any obligation to check. The case has drawn comparisons to George Floyd in the United States. The comparison is imperfect, but the contrast is obvious: In Nowak’s case, the police had every reason to believe the man on the ground needed urgent medical care. The artificial intelligence boom has become one of the biggest engines of the American economy. It has also triggered growing backlash against the data centers that make the boom possible. Tech moguls have rushed to build giant warehouses packed with the computing power needed to run AI systems, but they have done almost nothing to explain to ordinary Americans why those facilities deserve so much land, water, electricity, and political favoritism. Pro-life advocates have won big victories under Donald Trump, but they have always been unsatisfied with his public priorities. Activists are pushing for a ban of the abortion pill right before midterm elections because they have been unsuccessful with referendums on the state level. In our modern world, it is very common to conflate motives we do not understand with some form of mental illness. This is understandable when it comes to horrific crime. Someone like a serial killer is so violent and twisted that it is hard for us to comprehend his actions, and there is certainly a fair amount of mental illness that is a factor. But today people often use this explanation when it comes to political disagreements. Abortion, hatred of Christians, the mutilation of children to turn a boy into a girl — these beliefs are so horrible that they can only possibly be explained by a malfunctioning brain. Of course, that is not the only explanation. The other option is that some people have a very different set of values that drive them to pursue goals that we view as evil. The average American would like to avoid this truth because it comes with an unnerving conclusion. Your political enemies are not crazy; they are sane people who hate you and want to hurt you. Internet streamer Hasan Piker declared the United States a "white supremacist county" during a recent appearance. Donald Trump has survived another assassination attempt by an alleged deranged progressive. Thankfully, Cole Allen was never able to get a clear shot at the president, but the allegation that another radical leftist managed to smuggle a long gun into the event site should alarm everyone. Despite multiple assassination attempts against Trump and the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, progressives have only intensified their rhetoric, including open calls for violence. Democrats are not interested in turning down the temperature or abandoning political violence; they are only disappointed that the “lone wolves” they inspired have been unsuccessful. Progressives see political violence as their birthright and will not stop deploying it unless they are stopped with immediate and severe consequences.
