It’s only human nature to want to know the ‘real’ stories behind policing and detective work, and the one we get asked most frequently is “did you ever come close to losing your life?” The quick answer to that is “absolutely, so many times!” But without sound cliched or dismissive, it really is a part of the job and when you work as a team with your fellow colleagues and have each other’s back, those moments don’t really stand out because it is the reality of the situation. Being an undercover detective is dangerous most days. But we are trained to mitigate those dangers and have clear procedures in place to protect us… most of the time!The memories that DO stand out though are the times when you could have lost your life because of somebody’s negligence (usually somebody higher up in the chain of command who aren’t as directly impacted by their own decisions).
