Becoming Bilingual In Dog Body Language With Allie Bender
The best way's to create a stronger bond with your dog is taking the time to learn their language. A wagging tail can mean joy, stress, or “I’m not sure about this,” and that one misunderstanding is a perfect snapshot of why dog body language is so easy to get wrong. I’m joined by Allie Bender, certified dog behavior consultant, co-founder of Pet Harmony Training, and co-author of *Canine Enrichment for the Real World*, to help us get fluent in canine communication the same way we’d learn a second language: words first, then sentences, then real-time conversation. We dig into the signals dog owners hear about most, like stress yawns and tail wagging, and then go deeper into what actually changes the meaning: context, environment, and the rest of the dog’s body. Allie explains how to spot tension versus looseness, why the mouth can be one of the most information-rich places to look, and how ears and tail carriage can indicate arousal even when wagging doesn’t tell you much. We also talk about the power of trends and “what’s normal” for the individual dog, including how subtle new behaviors in senior dogs can point to pain, anxiety, or discomfort. We unpack learned helplessness and shutdown, where fear can look like stillness, and how to tell “relaxed” from “checked out” with simple, humane observation. And of course we balance it out with what happy dogs look like: bouncy inefficient play, soft eyes, slow breathing, and that melty, safe puddle-on-the-floor relaxation.Resources:Doggy Language by Lili Chin - https://amzn.to/4raNGychttps://petharmonytraining.com/Send us Fan MailSupport the showFollow The Baroo:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/baroopup/Blog- https://www.thebaroo.com/Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/baroopet/ Pet parent question or story of canine companionship to share ? When Dogs Find What Humans Can't : Inside The World Of Cadaver Dogs
A note before listening: This episode includes mentions of sensitive and difficult subject matter, including murder, suicide, death, and missing persons. Please listen with care.Former FBI special agent and long time search and recovery handler Sonja Nordstrom joins me to chat about the bond between a working dog and their human. We chat about what it means to work alongside cadaver dogs when the “reward” is closure for families and critical support for investigators. Sonia shares what she’s observed in her dogs during intense deployments, how handlers balance celebration for the dog with respect for the tragedy, and why the bond feels different when your dog is also your teammate. We also dig into the stressors most people never consider: negative searches, the fear of missing something, and the pressure of calling a find when there’s no obvious forensic evidence. On the training side, Sonia breaks down her detection philosophy in plain language: make the odor valuable, make the reward system worth the effort, and use a crisp marker signal so the dog gets total clarity. She explains why she prefers a natural “lock up” indication at source, how air-scent searches work across shifting wind and terrain, and why consistency and communication are the foundation of both elite K9 work and everyday life with dogs.If you love working dogs, scent work, search and rescue, or just want a deeper understanding of what dogs are capable of, you’ll take a lot from this one. Not Everything Burns with Carrie Karuhn
A wildfire can erase a neighborhood in hours, but the aftermath can take years and it rarely looks the way people imagine. I sit down with author Carrie Karuhn to talk about the real events behind her novel Not Everything Burns, inspired by the 2007 Malibu fire that destroyed her home and took the animals she loved most.We chat about why Carrie chose fiction over memoir. We dig into what the title really means, why she calls the novel a love story, and how accountability became part of her healing when the fire was sparked by reckless decisions. Carrie shares what it was like to get the call that “everything is gone,” the painful uncertainty around her pets’ last moments, and the small details that eventually offered solace. We also explore the human-animal bond through premonitions, a single white rose blooming in a torched garden.Tune in if you care about pet loss, wildfire recovery, grief support, resilience, and the real-world costs of disaster, this conversation will stay with you. From Combat Rehab To Canine Neuroscience with Lawrence Minnis
I chat with Laurence Minnis, an Army veteran and neuroscience researcher, about how dogs helped rebuild his life after a neurological illness and why shelter adoption feels like both fate and risk. We break down what drives the adoption decision, how uncertainty shows up after you bring a dog home, and what support makes long-term success more likely. • growing up in Southeast DC and being “chosen” by a neighborhood stray named Benji • military service, illness during deployment, and rehab at Walter Reed leading to the Dog Tags program • adopting Ebony and why black dogs and pit bulls get overlooked in shelters • researching the adoption decision process and why feelings often beat stated preferences • comparing breeder predictability with shelter uncertainty and how that shapes satisfaction • common mismatched expectations, stress after adoption, and why returns should not be demonized • redesigning shelters from a retail model to a realtor-style support model • practical habits that build the bond fast, including training during daily feeding • patience for shelter dogs, surprise triggers, and real examples of growth over time Resources:Instagram @ https://www.instagram.com/dogadoptionresearch/LinkedIn @ https://www.linkedin.com/in/lawrenceminnis/Facebook @ Dog Adoption Decision-MakingIf you enjoyed this conversation, I'd love it if you'd follow the show, leave a review, and share this episode with someone who loves dogs. The Cost of Caring : Rising Vet Bills and The Bond with Dr. Peter Weinstein
One of the hardest parts of loving a dog is realizing you can’t protect them from everything, especially the moment a health decision collides with stress, emotion, and a bill you didn’t see coming. I wanted to talk about the part of the human-animal bond nobody talks about: money, and how it quietly shapes the care our pets receive and the guilt we carry when the choices we want to make feel impossible. I’m joined by mobile veterinarian Dr. Heather Oxford and veterinary economist Dr. Peter Weinstein to unpack why veterinary care costs what it costs. We dig into the post-2020 reality that changed everything, staffing shortages, supply chain problems, rising wages. Dr. Weinstein also explains why many veterinary practices run on relatively thin margins, and how that pressure shows up in pricing, access, and the trust gap many pet parents feel today. We also talk about corporate ownership and private equity in veterinary medicine. We also cover what you can do as a pet parent: budgeting for lifetime dog ownership, getting pet insurance before the first vet visit, understanding pre-existing conditions and waiting periods, and using backup options like CareCredit so an emergency doesn’t force a decision without information. If this conversation helps you, please follow the show, leave a review, and share it with someone who loves dogs, then tell us: what’s one thing you’re going to do differently to prepare for your pet’s next emergency?Send us Fan MailSupport the showFollow The Baroo:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/baroopup/Blog- https://www.thebaroo.com/Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/baroopet/ Pet parent question or story of canine companionship to share ? Shelby: The Dog That Helped Me Heal with Jon Lee Brody
He watched Shelby come into the world, then had to learn how to let her go. John Lee Brody joins me for a raw, deeply personal conversation about what it means to love a dog with your whole nervous system and what happens when that love turns into caretaking, vigilance, and grief. Shelby was a 21-pound corgi with a huge presence, and John’s story starts with a rare beginning: breeder updates, a webcam view of her birth, and the unmistakable instinct of “that one is mine.” From there, we get into the heart of mental health and dog companionship. John talks openly about depression, anxiety, and panic, and why a dog’s daily routines can be more grounding than any perfect explanation. We unpack the “woo-woo” side of loss too: the uncanny sense many people have that a beloved pet is still close, and how meaning-making can be both comforting and surprisingly logical. We also talk about upbringing, approval seeking, and the relief of experiencing truly unconditional love in a world that can feel transactional. Then we walk through Shelby’s kidney failure journey in detail, including the first scary symptoms, emergency vet care, creatinine and BUN numbers, subcutaneous fluids at home, specialist visits, holistic support, and the year-plus “bonus life” John fought for. We close with how he honors Shelby now, from memorial tattoos to the enduring lessons she left behind: presence, compassion, and a quieter kind of courage. Meet The Dog In Front Of You with Kim Brophey
What if the most loving thing you could do for your dog is stop trying to “fix” them? I sit down with award-winning dog behavior consultant and author Kim Brophey to challenge the default story we’ve been sold: that dogs should effortlessly adapt to our busy, indoor, highly controlled human lives. Together we unpack a simple but radical reframing that changes everything from training to daily routines: “Who is this dog, and what do they need to thrive?” We talk about autonomy and how modern pet life can quietly shrink a dog’s world, especially in cities, on-leash living, and single-dog households. Kim explains why trust and control are not the same thing, and why true self-control works best when it’s built on safety, predictability, and an environment designed for dogs. We explore welfare science, the meaning of “behavior problems,” and why issues like barking, reactivity, destructiveness, and anxiety can be evidence of welfare deficits, not stubbornness or “bad dogs.” Kim also shares practical ways to widen your dog’s behavioral world using an ethogram of natural dog behaviors, including how to support needs we often block like investigating, scavenging, social connection, and sensory exploration. We dig into genetics and breed traits, why certain dogs struggle more in modern settings, and how to set humane expectations without lowering safety standards. If you want a clearer lens on dog behavior, enrichment, and what a good life for a pet dog actually looks like, this conversation will stick with you. Jen shares how a childhood with a police K9 shaped her sense of responsibility, and why living with five dogs now feels like the most meaningful work of her life. We talk pack dynamics, Border Collie needs, the “soul dog” idea, and how grief can deepen gratitude for ordinary days. • Growing up with Shep the police canine and learning what real training and partnership look like • Feeling judged for having five dogs and why curiosity lands better than commentary • Border Collies and the overlooked need for mental stimulation alongside exercise • What a normal day looks like with a five-dog routine and a well-adjusted pack • The big shift from two dogs to three and how pack roles and communication emerge • The gift of being present at the end and why pet grief can feel compounded over time • Why we avoid playing favorites and what “soul dog” means to different people • Choosing gratitude for fur, chores, and toy destruction as signs of a healthy household If you enjoyed this conversation, I'd love it if you'd follow the show, leave a review, and share this episode with someone who loves dogs. The Science Of The Bond with Dr. Marc Bekoff
I chat with biologist, ethologist, behavioral ecologist and writer, Dr. Marc Bekoff about what science says about the emotional lives of animals and why our deepest bonds with dogs are built on trust, safety, and two-way communication. We break down dog literacy, consent, and the alpha myth so you can create a stronger bond with your pup. • reciprocal bonds between dogs and humans shaped by personality and environment • emotions as social glue that holds relationships together • multisensory communication including scent, sound, posture, and facial cues • becoming dog literate through careful observation of composite signals • agency, consent, and context as practical rules for happier dogs • how mixed human signals confuse dogs and increase stress • why dominance and aversive training create fear rather than trust • dog park “helicopter parenting” and the power of spontaneous praise • the scientific shift toward recognizing animal sentience and emotion • His good friend and colleague Jane Goodall’s influence and why naming animals matters • what alpha really means as influence, not aggression • One Health and One Welfare as a framework for compassionate action • intrinsic value of each animal as the basis for compassion and conservation You can find Dr. Bekoff's books here- https://amzn.to/3R57jKhIf you enjoyed this conversation, I’d love it if you’d follow the show, leave a review, and share this episode with someone who loves dogs. Resilience From A Rescue Dog
A scruffy white rescue dog, $50 to my name, and a split-second yes that rerouted my entire life. Season three begins with the story of Chance, my soul dog, and the reason this season centers on the human dog bond. If you have ever loved a dog, lost a dog, or felt like you were barely holding it together, this one is for you.At 33, I am waiting tables, stuck in panic attacks, chronic pain, and the fallout of an unhealthy situationship. I know I need a change, but I didn't know what that was. Then I meet Chance at a Santa Monica outdoor adoption through Perfect Pet Rescue, a nine-month-old pup with a goofy walk and a calm kind of magic. From there, life keeps shifting: I get fired during the 2009 financial crisis and somehow feel relief, then dog walking turns into a dog care business that we build together for 16 years. Chance teaches me mindfulness and presence by refusing to be rushed, and he pushes me to do the slow work of trust through his stranger danger and anxiety. His resilience through skin issues, tummy trouble, cancer, and mobility changes shows me that strength is not just endurance, it is choosing joy and love while you keep moving. If this story resonates, subscribe, share it with a fellow dog person, and leave a review so more listeners can find it. Re-Release: Dogs Have Rich Cognitive and Emotional Lives with Alexis Devine from Bunny the "Talking Dog"
Re-Releasing one of my favorite episodes so far. In this episode I am joined by Alexis Devine, the woman behind the viral sensation "Bunny the talking dog". Alexis is the pet parent of Bunny the talking sheepadoodle and Otter the poodle. Inspired by speech-language pathologist Chrisitina Hunger's work with her own dog, Alexis began training her dog Bunny to speak using an augmentative and alternative communication device ( A.A.C) otherwise known as sound buttons. When Bunny was about six months old they joined a study with the comparative cognition lab at UC San Diego, which studies whether or not non-humans are able to express themselves in language-like ways . Much to the delight of millions of followers, Alexis has been documenting her journey with Bunny and Otter on social media all along the way.We talk a little bit about the science behind these buttons, her journey with Bunny and Otter, and some of the lessons she has learned along the way.Photo Credit For Alexis and Bunny : Lance ReisUseful Links :Official website - https://www.whataboutbunny.comFollow Alexis Devine on Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/whataboutbunny/Follow Alexis Devine on Tik Tok -https://www.tiktok.com/discover/bunny-the-dog?lang=enBunny's favorite talking buttons -https://fluent.pet/?aff=2They Can Talk.Org - http://how.theycantalk.org/c/homehttps://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/courses/24660https://aggressivedog.comhttps://kimbropheylegscourses.thinkific.com/courses/legs-applied-ethology-family-dog-mediation-professional-course How Stella Learned to Talk by, Christina Hunger - https://amzn.to/3blejxMSend us Fan MailSupport the showFollow The Baroo:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/baroopup/Blog- https://www.thebaroo.com/Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/baroopet/ Pet parent question or story of canine companionship to share ? Special Episode: What is Happening in the LA Animal Shelters?
In this special episode I chat with Aleksandra Schiffer, president and founder of the Los Angeles non-profit I Stand with My Pack (https://istandwithmypack.org/). We chat about the animal shelter crisis that is happening in Los Angeles right now. With a record number of dogs — upwards of three times the normal rate — being relinquished, abandoned, and dumped, shelters are at capacity. Some shelters are housing as many as five dogs in kennels made for one, and the euthanasia rate is quickly rising simply because they do not have the space or resources to care for these dogs. We chat about some of the reasons behind this crisis and what really needs to change to help these animals.Resources:https://istandwithmypack.org/https://www.laanimalservices.com/Send us Fan MailSupport the showFollow The Baroo:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/baroopup/Blog- https://www.thebaroo.com/Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/baroopet/ Pet parent question or story of canine companionship to share ?
