Episode 98: Unconventional Money Suggestions For Graduates
Send us Fan MailStudent loans, dating, daycare, pets, and income. Those five areas can quietly decide whether your 20s feel like freedom or like financial quicksand. Danielle Reese, money coach and founder of the Better Budgeting Playbook, shares the unconventional advice she wishes she could hand to her 18-year-old self during graduation season, the stuff most people skip because it is awkward, emotional, or not “fun” personal finance content. We dig into why avoiding student debt matters beyond the interest rate, especially when repayment plans and monthly payments can change. I talk through a pay-as-you-go approach to college, using cash, scholarships, grants, and employer tuition reimbursement so your degree does not come with a decade-long bill attached. Then we pivot to relationship choices and the real cost of dating, including how chasing the wrong relationship can redirect school decisions, drain time and money, and keep you stuck in uncertainty. If you are dating as an adult, we talk about a clearer path: date to marry and do not ignore early doubt. From there, we get practical about family budgeting: stacking cash, practicing living on one income, and planning for a stay-at-home parent setup when possible to reduce childcare costs and daily chaos. We also tackle a spicy one, pets. I explain why waiting until you own a home can protect your housing options, reduce rent fees, and help you handle surprise vet bills. We wrap with the upside: building a business early, learning marketing, and using entrepreneurship to expand your income and options. If this hits home, subscribe, share it with a friend who is graduating, and leave a review so more people can find the Better Budgeting Podcast.Danielle is a money coach helping those who have been trying to figure out their finances FINALLY create a clear plan so they don’t have to worry about waiting to refill their bank account the next payday. Episode 97: Update on the Sell Family!
Send us Fan MailThey used to feel like money was suffocating them. Now they’re rating their financial peace at an 8 out of 10 and they got there by building a system that survives real life.Jordan and Kiersten come back for a two-year update and share what changed after they stopped swiping credit cards, started making a monthly spending plan, and gave every dollar a clear job. We also get honest about strategies that can go wrong before they go right. A balance transfer card became too easy when it lived in the wallet and got tied to DoorDash, so they removed the temptation (yes, the freezer story is real) and rebuilt trust with a strict pay-it-off approach. And even though a debt consolidation loan felt “icky” at first, simplifying payments helped them move faster and stay focused. The numbers are huge: $66,888.62 paid off since June 2023 and 12 debts gone. But the best part is the mindset shift, like the moment Jordan realized they could replace a broken fridge with cash from an emergency fund instead of fear. If you’re working on budgeting, debt payoff, money mindset, or navigating life changes like a new baby or a job switch, you’ll leave with practical ideas and a lot of hope.Subscribe for more real-world budgeting wins, share this with a friend who needs a reset, and leave a review. Episode 96: Common Money Mistakes You Are Making
Send us Fan MailYour budget can look “right” on paper and still leave you feeling broke. That disconnect is exactly what we tackle as we walk through the most common budgeting mistakes that quietly drain your cash and kill your momentum, even when your income is solid. I share what I’m seeing in real coaching conversations and what I’ve been personally convicted about too, because financial progress isn’t about perfection, it’s about building a plan that works with real life. We start with the biggest blind spot: treating a budget like a list of bills. If groceries, gas, kids’ lunches, and everyday necessities aren’t included, it’s no surprise the money vanishes. Then we dig into the “I have free cash so I can do that” mindset, especially in summer when spending ramps up and goals get paused. I talk about why stopping the plan makes it so hard to restart and how staying consistent can shrink a long debt payoff timeline into a focused season of freedom. We also cover why paying off debt with no emergency fund is a risky move, how automatic savings transfers can backfire when cash flow is uneven, and why paying extra on every debt at once often keeps you stuck. I explain the snowball method I use with clients to get quick wins, build confidence, and create real progress you can feel. If you’re ready to stop the paycheck-to-paycheck stress and make your plan actually stick, subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find the show.Danielle is a money coach helping those who have been trying to figure out their finances FINALLY create a clear plan so they don’t have to worry about waiting to refill their bank account the next payday. Episode 94: Why Making More Money Isn’t Fixing the Stress
Send us Fan MailA viral claim says $100K “isn’t impressive” anymore. Hot take or helpful truth? We dig into the deeper issue most people face: more income without more clarity. I share why the stress sticks around as paychecks grow, how lifestyle creep quietly erodes progress, and the simple shift that turns scattered spending into calm, confident decisions. We start by unpacking the $100K myth and the guilt many high earners carry when money still feels tight. From there, we break down the real culprit—unassigned dollars—and explain why cash flow without a plan creates late fees, friction, and constant second-guessing. You’ll hear how alignment (spending that reflects your values) changes your day-to-day choices, reduces anxiety, and gives every dollar a clear purpose. I also walk through practical structure: fewer accounts, straightforward automation, and a repeatable order of operations that prioritizes essentials, obligations, goals, and then lifestyle.Expect a reality check, not a lecture. You don’t need to hustle harder, cut joy, or wait for a raise to find peace. You need a system you can live with, plus a focus on what actually matters to you. By the end, you’ll have one action step to start right away: decide what you want your money working toward now, and assign your next dollars to it. If you want support, the Better Budgeting Playbook and our Financial Freedom Society community are here to help you build confidence, one aligned decision at a time.If this resonated, follow the show, share it with someone who needs relief from money stress, and leave a quick review to help others find us. Episode 93: Turning Your “Why” Into Real Money Decisions
Send us Fan MailYour money goals don’t fail for lack of desire—they stall because the plan doesn’t match your life. We take your why and show how to turn it into a flexible money system that holds up when schedules get busy, holidays hit hard, and emotions run high. Instead of white-knuckling a strict budget, we walk through a simple framework—values lead to systems, systems guide decisions—so your spending protects what matters and guilt takes a back seat.We break down what different whys look like in practice. If you crave peace, you’ll hear how fewer categories, auto-pay, and a checking buffer reduce mental load. If freedom drives you, we map a focused debt payoff and explain why saying no to upgrades can speed progress. Family-first listeners get a plan for monthly experiences and space for spontaneous moments. If security is your anchor, we explore building the emergency fund and choosing stability over speed without losing momentum. You’ll also get one powerful habit to use before every purchase: ask, does this move me closer to the life I said I wanted? That pause shifts choices from emotional to aligned. We talk about consistency over intensity, why a system you can follow imperfectly beats a perfect one you quit, and how to adapt any framework—cash, cards, or hybrid—to fit your reality. Walk away with a small action for the week: pick one category and redesign it to support your why.If this resonates, subscribe, share the show with a friend, and leave a quick review. Episode 92: You Need to Know Your Why
Send us Fan MailReady to stop restarting your budget every January and finally make your plan stick? We dive straight into the heart of financial change: finding a why that outlasts motivation and holds steady when life gets messy. Instead of chasing perfect spreadsheets or new apps, we focus on the deeper reason your money matters—what stress it’s costing you right now, what you’re afraid won’t change if you stay on autopilot, and who you’re really doing this for.We unpack the difference between surface goals—pay off debt, save more, feel less stressed—and a personal why that fuels consistent action. We also explore how to navigate slow seasons and curveballs without losing momentum, reframing the key decision from can I afford it to does this support the life I’m building.Along the way, we share coaching insights on why tools suddenly “work” once your purpose is clear, and how to pivot your plan when family or career changes demand it. If you’ve tried resets and templates without lasting results, this conversation gives you the practical mindset and structure to create calm, confident progress—no perfection required. Episode 89: Align Your Money With Your Priorities
Send us Fan MailFeeling pulled in every direction by money “shoulds”? We’re cutting through the noise to help you build a budget that matches your real life, not someone else’s highlight reel. I share the simple, repeatable steps I use with clients to uncover true priorities, choose smart trade-offs, and fund what actually matters in this season. We start by naming the pressure—milestones, trends, and the endless scroll that says you’re behind—then flip the script with a Priority List exercise that brings clarity in minutes. Couples do it separately and compare; singles rank their top ten. The overlaps show where your first dollars should go. From there, we make alignment real: if staying home with a baby leads the list, you may choose older cars and fewer takeout nights. That’s not deprivation; that’s intention. You can have anything, not everything—and that’s the path to peace.Next, we read your bank statement like a values report. Frequent drive-thrus might signal time constraints; steady online orders might point to comfort, convenience, or a cozier home. When spending matches values, keep it and plan for it. When it doesn’t, redirect to savings, debt payoff, and time freedom. We also set boundaries to protect your mind space: unfollow accounts that trigger FOMO and ask, does this align with my season of life right now? Priorities change, and your budget should move with them.By the end, you’ll have reflection questions to spot misalignment fast and practical ideas to make the long game feel doable. Every no becomes a yes somewhere better: no to subscription creep is yes to breathing room; no to a flashy upgrade is yes to more time with your family. When your daily choices line up with your values, anxiety fades and confidence rises. If this resonated, subscribe, share with a friend who needs budget calm, and leave a quick review to help others find the show.Danielle is a money coach helping those who have been trying to figure out their finances FINALLY create a clear plan so they don’t have to worry about waiting to refill their bank account the next payday. Episode 88: Being Busy Costs Money and Sanity
Send us Fan MailWhat if the real budget leak isn’t a line item—it’s your calendar? Danielle Reese, money coach and founder of the Better Budgeting Playbook, takes a scalpel to the cult of busy and reveals how constant motion fuels impulse spending, late fees, and emotional burnout. We trace the quiet path from overloaded schedules to DoorDash dinners, Amazon boxes you barely remember ordering, and the creeping disconnection that makes stress spending feel deserved. Then we flip the script with a practical plan that protects your money and your peace. We start by naming the cultural badge of busy and its financial fallout, then move into the emotional costs—decision fatigue, frayed family time, and the health dip that comes from skipping rest for months at a stretch. Danielle shares real-world stories from coaching and home life to show how “earning ≠ managing” and why a two-hour setup plus 15-minute monthly check-ins can bring clarity faster than you think. You’ll learn how to audit commitments, identify the one activity you secretly dread, and step back without guilt—even when you feel irreplaceable. From there, we get tactical: schedule anchors first (budget dates, family dinners, therapy), batch and automate to end daily re-decisions, and create true white space—quiet minutes with no phone, no chores, and no noise—to reset your brain. We wrap with alignment: if your values are family, rest, and financial freedom, your calendar should prove it. Expect simple routines, honest mindset shifts, and a journaling prompt to catch where you’re confusing activity with effectiveness. Subscribe, share with a friend who’s stretched thin, and leave a review telling us one commitment you’re cutting this week to buy back your time and your money.Danielle is a money coach helping those who have been trying to figure out their finances FINALLY create a clear plan so they don’t have to worry about waiting to refill their bank account the next payday. Episode 86: The Four Steps to Financial Success
Send us Fan MailHave you ever watched thousands of dollars drain from your emergency fund in what feels like the blink of an eye? That sinking feeling when unexpected expenses hijack your carefully laid financial plans is something I experienced firsthand recently—$7,000 worth of dental emergencies, home repairs, and orthodontic surprises over just three months. The math is sobering. Even saving an ambitious $1,000 monthly moving forward, it would take seven full months to rebuild what disappeared in a quarter of that time. This imbalance between how quickly money leaves versus how slowly it returns creates the same psychological barrier many face when looking at debt—that overwhelming feeling of "why even try?" when the journey seems so long.Through years of coaching clients through similar financial crossroads, I've developed a four-part framework that transforms this paralysis into progress. It starts with creating a crystal-clear vision of what financial success means to you personally. Next comes connecting with your deeper "why"—those emotional drivers that give your financial goals meaning beyond numbers. Only then do we build the process (the actual mathematical plan), followed by the most crucial element: taking consistent action with accountability. Most people get stuck creating beautiful spreadsheets and budgets that never translate into real-world behavior change because they're missing the accountability piece.Whether you're rebuilding an emergency fund after unexpected expenses or tackling significant debt, this vision-why-process-action framework creates a system that can withstand setbacks. When financial emergencies drain your resources and your motivation, remembering the paradise waiting on the other side becomes your anchor. Ready to transform your financial journey? Episode 85: Breaking the Paycheck-to-Paycheck Cycle: Why It's Harder Now Than 5 Years Ago
Send us Fan MailFive years of coaching has shown me something alarming: getting out of debt and building savings is significantly harder now than in 2020. This isn't just perception – the numbers tell a powerful story of why so many feel financially stretched despite earning more than they did five years ago. When COVID hit in 2020, stimulus checks and enhanced unemployment created a temporary cash flow that masked underlying financial issues. Fast forward to 2022, inflation skyrocketed to 8%, while income growth consistently failed to keep pace. The Consumer Price Index has outpaced wage increases every single year since 2020, creating a compounding deficit in personal finances. Most revealing? Consumer spending has increased by an average of 9% annually during this period – exceeding even the highest inflation rates. Those small daily expenses that seemed harmless in 2020 now keep us trapped in financial cycles. That $6 daily coffee might not prevent homeownership, but at $1,440 per year, it contributes significantly to paycheck-to-paycheck living. Social media platforms and easy payment options like Afterpay have dramatically changed consumer behavior, making spending effortless while saving requires deliberate effort. Breaking free requires both tactical adjustments (examining every transaction) and mindset shifts (recognizing your worth and pursuing substantial income growth beyond standard 3% raises). As a coach, I've seen more clients seeking personal loans, rate reductions, or even bankruptcy in the last 18 months than in the previous three years combined. The path to financial freedom in 2024 looks different than it did in 2020, but remains achievable with the right approach. Ready to break the cycle? Schedule a session through the link in the show notes – I'd love to help you create a personalized strategy for today's challenging financial landscape.Danielle is a money coach helping those who have been trying to figure out their finances FINALLY create a clear plan so they don’t have to worry about waiting to refill their bank account the next payday. Episode 83: Navigating Going Over Budget
Send us Fan MailEver blown your budget and felt like a complete financial failure? You're not alone—and it doesn't mean your financial planning skills are broken beyond repair. In this candid episode, I share my recent DIY deck painting project that went spectacularly over budget (six gallons of paint when I planned for three—and still counting!). As a money coach who's paid off $60,000 in debt, I'm pulling back the curtain to show that even financial professionals sometimes miscalculate expenses.Rather than dwelling on the mistake, I walk through the exact recovery process I use with my clients and myself: pulling up the numbers for clarity, strategically reallocating funds from other categories, and making intentional decisions about what truly matters. The $20 I'm trimming from several different budget categories allows me to complete my project without derailing my entire month's financial plan. The real value comes in understanding what NOT to do when facing budget overruns. Don't bury your head in the sand, don't shame yourself (financial missteps aren't moral failings), and definitely don't keep swiping those credit cards. As I learned from my dietitian: just as one off-plan meal shouldn't ruin your entire day of healthy eating, one budget category exceeding its limits doesn't mean your financial plan is worthless.Budgeting isn't about rigid perfection—it's about resilience and adaptation. Our consumer culture constantly pushes us to solve problems by spending more, but with practice and sometimes guidance, we can develop the skills to evaluate each purchase against our true priorities.
