The Counterfeit Version of Real Religion. (2 Kings 17: 1-41)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: The Counterfeit Version of Real Religion. (2 Kings 17: 1-41)We use the word religion all the time; we say someone is “religious.”When we talk about “world religions", we usually refer to beliefs, rituals, and practices connected to a deity. Usually, when we use the word, we’re thinking of the major systems of belief: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam But interestingly, the Bible doesn’t use the word religion very often. The word, when translated in this way, appears only three or four times in the New Testament, and when it does appear, it’s used in two very different ways: Sometimes negatively describes an empty, external ritual. Sometimes, positively, describing what James calls “pure and undefiled religion.” And if Scripture speaks of pure religion, then by implication, there must also be impure religion. Religion that looks spiritual… sounds spiritual… feels spiritual… but is actually defiled. So, what does impure religion look like and how does it affect us today? There is a story in the Old Testament that helps answer those questions with remarkable clarity and it’s found in 2 Kings 17, I would say one of the most important chapters in the entire book, and a chapter that helps explain events in the New Testament, especially in the Gospel of John. So, let’s walk through it together…..Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. The Depths to Which Some People Can Fall. (2 Kings 17: 1-20)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: The Depths to Which Some People Can Fall. (2 Kings 17: 1-20)Now and then, we hear stories of people who have committed truly shocking sins, the kind that make you pause and ask: “How low can a person go?”When we ask it honestly, Scripture gives us insight, not just into the human heart, but into the grace of God, the consequences of sin, and the dangers of drifting. And today, as we continue our journey through the book of 2 Kings, we come to a king who sinks lower than any king before him. His story is disturbing. It’s dark. It’s tragic…. But it’s also instructive. So, here’s what we’re going to do today. First, we’ll walk through 2 Kings 16 and see just how far this king fell. Then, we’ll step into the New Testament and ask what this means for us today. Two passages, but one very important lesson. Let’s begin….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: When Tradition Helps… and When It Hurts. (2 Kings 15: 1-38)We all have traditions. Some are personal. You celebrate birthdays. You mark wedding anniversaries. You gather the family, blow out candles, cut the cake, and take the photos.... And that’s a good thing. We pause, reflect, and give thanks.Traditions can be beautiful. They can create belonging and reinforce values. They give us memories that warm the heart. But — and here’s the tension —Traditions can also lose their meaning. Because the bottom line — the three‑word application at the end of this episode — is something every believer can agree on.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. How to be the Best Version of You. (2 Kings 14: 1-29)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: How to be the Best Version of You. (2 Kings 14: 1-29)If you have a job, any job, you have an enormous spiritual opportunity. I’m not talking about making more money.I’m not talking about climbing the ladder or getting a promotion.I’m talking about something far bigger. I’m talking about the possibility that your job is one of the greatest spiritual platforms God has given you. What if your home, or your ministry, or your daily responsibilities, is the arena where God is shaping you into the best version of you?Because the principle we’re going to explore today applies to every believer, in every season, in every responsibility. It applies to your job, yes — but also to your relationships, your Christian ministry, your decisions, your calling, and your character. To see it clearly, we’re going to look at three kings in 2 Kings 14, and how God evaluated their “performance.”Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. When Christians Don’t Really Believe. (2 Kings 13: 1-25)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: When Christians Don’t Really Believe. (2 Kings 13: 1-25)There’s a strange and unsettling reality in the Christian life that we don’t talk about very often. It’s this: Christians don’t always believe. Oh, we believe in God, that’s not the issue. We believe the gospel, we believe the Bible, and we even believe the creeds sometimes. But when life presses in, when circumstances tighten, when fear rises, or disappointment lingers… sometimes Christians stop believing in God Himself. We stop believing His promises, we stop believing we have His presence. We stop believing in His power, and we stop believing in His goodness and the result is not atheism; it’s something far more subtle. It is a life lived as if God were small, distant, or disinterested. That’s the story of 2 Kings 13. It’s a chapter about spiritual inconsistency, about half‑hearted obedience, and about people who know better… but don’t live better. And if we’re honest, it’s a chapter about us. 2 Kings 13 offers us a reflection on the Christian life that sometimes is not very flattering. But it’s also a chapter filled with astonishing grace because even when God’s people don’t believe, God remains faithful.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Sometimes the most influential teachers are the people God quietly places in our path, a parent, a mentor, a pastor, a friend, someone who shaped us without ever holding an official position. There’s no substitute for a good teacher, but, and here’s the twist, it doesn’t always work. You can have a good teacher… and a poor student.Something goes wrong. Was the teacher unclear? Was the student inattentive?Did someone skip their homework? Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: When You Feel Like You’re Hanging by a Thread. (2 Kings 11: 1-20)In today's passage, we have arrived at a moment where God’s entire program. His covenant, His promise, His plan, is all hanging by a thread. One wrong move, one unexpected death, one successful assassination… and the line of David would be wiped out.... And if the line of David is wiped out, the Messiah cannot come. This is one of the most dramatic “knife‑edge” moments in the Old Testament — and yet the story is not ultimately about danger, it’s about God’s faithfulness, even when everything looks like it’s about to collapse.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. (2 Kings 10: 1-36)What does it mean to follow God faithfully — not too hot, not too cold, not too soft, not too hard? There’s a story in the Old Testament that gives us a surprising picture. It’s the story of a king named Jehu, a man anointed by God for a very specific task. And the way he carried out that task shows us both the dangers of distorted religion and the beauty of obedience that is “just right.” The type of belief that is just a Fairy Tale.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. God's Anointing for Christian Believers. (2 Kings 9: 1-37)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: God's Anointing for Christian Believers. (2 Kings 9: 1-37)We don’t use the word very often anymore, but it’s a deeply biblical word — anointing. Some preachers use it so loosely that you almost raise an eyebrow. Others hardly mention it at all. But Scripture is clear: God anoints people. In the Old Testament, prophets were anointed, priests were anointed, and Kings were anointed. And in the New Testament, John tells us plainly in 1 John 2 that believers, all genuine Christian believers, are anointed as well. So, the question becomes: What does it mean to be anointed? And what does that look like for us today? To answer that, we’re going to look at one of the clearest pictures of anointing in the Old Testament. The moment when God anointed a man named Jehu. His story gives us a window into what anointing meant then, and what it means for us now.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. (2 Kings 8: 16-29)Parents warn their children about the friends they keep. Youth leaders warn teenagers about relationships. And Scripture itself says that “bad company corrupts good character.” Why?Because relationships are powerful. They can lift you toward Christ… or quietly pull you away from Him. Today, we’re stepping back into a passage that reads almost like a case study in the danger of unhealthy influence. Two kings. Two family lines. Two tragic stories. God Has a Message for You. (2 Kings 8: 1-15)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: God Has a Message for You. (2 Kings 8: 1-15)If you’re a follower of Jesus, here’s something you need to know right at the start of this episode: God has a message for you. Not just one, but many, and He delivers them in all kinds of ways. The primary ways, of course, are through the texts of the bible. God wrote a book, and He filled that book with stories, stories about real people, in real places, facing real situations. And although those stories were written to them, they were written for us. Paul says exactly that in Romans 15:4: “Whatever things were written before were written for our learning…” In other words, when you read the Old Testament, you’re looking at someone else’s story — but it’s meant to slow you down and prompt you to take note. Pay attention to both the narrative and the prophetic and consider how it fits with the world you see around you today. And today, in 2 Kings 8, we’re going to look at three short stories, three moments where God had a message for three different people. But I strongly believe that the message He gave them is a message He wants to give you… So, let's see what God wants us to take on board today….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. The Sin of Remaining Silent. (2 Kings 6:23-7:19)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: The Sin of Remaining Silent. (2 Kings 6:23-7:19)As believers, we are usually very aware of the sins we commit when we do something wrong. We know when we’ve spoken harshly, acted selfishly, crossed a line, or broken a command. Those are what some theologians call sins of commission. But we are often far less aware of the sins we commit by not doing something, the things we leave undone, the good we withhold, the truth we never speak, the help we never offer. Those are sometimes called sins of omission, and believe me, Scripture has a great deal to say about them. As we continue our journey through 2 Kings, we come to a passage where both kinds of sin appear side by side. Some people in this story commit sins by what they do, and they do some terrible things. But tucked right in the middle is a group of people who sin by what they fail to do. So, let’s walk through this passage together and see what it teaches us, not only about what we shouldn’t do, but about what we must do….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. (2 Kings 6: 1-23)As I’ve studied the Scriptures over the years, one truth has impressed itself on me again and again: God wants to be your God, and He wants us to be His people.Well, I think it means · He wants to provide for us. · He wants to protect us. · And He wants to bless us, abundantly. But how does He do that? There are all kinds of answers you could give.Sometimes, He uses our own effort.Sometimes He uses other people.Sometimes He works through circumstances. But what about angels? Does God ever use angels to meet our needs?Do you have a guardian angel? Is there one angel assigned to you?Is that even , and if it is, how should you think about that? Well, there’s a passage in 2 Kings that sheds some light on these questions. (2 Kings 5 1-27)If you’re a believer in Jesus Christ, you are automatically a servant of the Lord, and you are also called to serve, to minister to other people. So, the question is not whether you’re a servant. The question is: What makes someone a good servant of the Lord? There’s a passage in the Old Testament that gives us a vivid illustration of what true servanthood looks like. And what makes this passage especially interesting is that it contains several servants, each contributing something different to the picture it paints. So, join me in 2 Kings chapter 5, one of the most familiar stories in the Old Testament — the healing of Naaman.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. (2 Kind 4: 1-44) Part 1.One of the great themes of Scripture is that God provides for His children. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells us that God sees, God knows, and God supplies. But what does that actually look like? What kinds of needs does He meet? And how does He meet them? The Old Testament is full of examples, and the New Testament builds on those promises. But in 2 Kings 4, we’re given three very specific, very practical stories of God stepping into real human need. Are Others Blessed Because of You? (2 Kings 3: 1-27)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: Are others Blessed Because of You? (2 Kings 3: 1-27) Welcome back, friends. Today, we’re stepping into one of the most surprising stories in the life of Elisha, a moment when God pours out blessings on people who didn’t deserve it, simply because one man humbled himself before the Lord. It’s a story that asks a searching question of every believer: Is it possible that God sometimes blesses people because of us? The bible gives us some examples of exactly that, and one of the clearest is found right here today in 2 Kings 3. This is a fascinating story because of that exact twist, because here we see God blessing people who don’t deserve it, simply because of someone who does deserve that blessing. So, join me in 2 Kings chapter 3….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: Introduction - 2 Kings: The Book that Details the Destruction of the Kingdom.Today, we begin a new chapter in the next stage of our journey through the whole bible, as we step from 1 Kings into 2 Kings. 2 Kings is a book that stands like a solemn monument in the overall landscape of the bible. If 1 Kings is the book of decline, 2 Kings is the book of collapse. If 1 Kings shows the cracks forming in the kingdom, 2 Kings shows the walls finally giving way. This is not a cheerful book, but it is a necessary one, and it is profoundly relevant for our times.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Follow your Father. (1 Kings 22; 41-53)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: Follow your Father. (1 Kings 22; 41-53)According to the bible, children are called to obey and honour their parents. This is a clear instruction that forms the foundation of the parent-child relationship in early life. But the question remains: should you always follow your parents? Some may immediately agree, while others may hesitate or question this idea. The answer depends on who the parent is and in what area you are considering following them. This distinction is important, and as we progress through the book of 1 Kings, we encounter the final paragraph of the last chapter of 1 Kings in which are two stories are presented—each about a different king. What is most striking is that one king followed his father, and that proved to be beneficial, while another king followed his father and that had negative consequences. Now the topic itself is complex. Some do not have fathers, and this presents its own questions and challenges. Ultimately, there are two primary answers to this question, with several nuances in between….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Beware of False Preachers. (1 Kings 22: 1-40)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: Beware of False Preachers. (1 Kings 22: 1-40)If you’re a believer in Jesus Christ and you’re serious about spiritual growth, then I assume you’re serious about Scripture. And if you’re serious about Scripture, you probably do more than listen to an occasional sermon on Sunday. Maybe you read Christian books and listen to Christian podcasts. Maybe you watch Christian television, and maybe you scroll through Christian content online. Now, there’s a place for all of that because there’s value in hearing different voices. But be careful. Listening to some Christian speakers and influencers these days can be risky to your spiritual health. I know—that sounds like a strange, but it’s a biblical warning because the bible repeatedly cautions God’s people about what they call false prophets, false teachers, with false messages. So today, I want to take you to a passage in the Old Testament that illustrates this danger vividly. And after we walk through the story, I want to show you some New Testament passages also that warn us about the same thing.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. .When Justice and Mercy Collide. (1 Kings 21: 1-29)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth, encouraging, and uplifting study through the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: When Justice and Mercy Collide. (1 Kings 21: 1-29)According to Scripture, two of the greatest virtues God calls us to practice are justice and mercy. Both are essential, and both reflect the character of God. However, sometimes life places us in situations where those two virtues seem to pull in opposite directions. Do I show justice here… Or do I show mercy? Which one is right in that moment? And that’s why we need a third virtue, and the bible calls that one, wisdom. Wisdom is what helps us discern when to apply justice, when to extend mercy, and how to hold both together in the same situation. Interestingly, 1 Kings 21 tells a story in which justice and mercy are both at play, and it is one of the most quoted episodes in the life of King Ahab. Don't Lose God's Blessing. (1 Kings 20: 1-43)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth, encouraging, and uplifting study through the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: Don't Lose God's Blessing. (1 Kings 20: 1-43)The Bible has shaped Western civilization more than any other book in history. Our ethics, our laws, our sense of justice—so much of it flows straight out of Scripture. But the Bible hasn’t just shaped our laws, it has also shaped our language. When the Bible was translated into English first by Tyndale and then with the KJV, which draws heavily on Tyndale's translation, it became the most widely read book in the English‑speaking world; its idioms, its expressions, and its imagery seeped into everyday speech. So much so that we use biblical phrases all the time without even realizing it.Expressions like “the writing is on the wall.” Or “the apple of his eye.” Or “a drop in the bucket.” Or how about, “by the skin of your teeth.” There are dozens of these, but today I want to look at just one of them. But instead of giving it to you upfront, I’m going to tell you the story behind it—and you see if you can work out the idiom by the time we get to the end. And the story behind it is found in 1 Kings chapter 20….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. How God Teaches People. (1 Kings 17: 1-24)
Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth, encouraging, and uplifting study through the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Today's Episode: How God Teaches People. (1 Kings 17: 1-24)What does it take for a person to prepare for ministry? Most people immediately think, “Well, you’ve got to go to bible college or university to do that.” And if you’re talking about becoming a pastor, perhaps that’s an advantage, although plenty of people have served the Lord faithfully without ever setting foot in a university classroom. But that’s not what I mean by ministry. According to Ephesians 4, if you have trusted Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins—if you know that issue is settled and heaven is your home—then you are already in the ministry. Most people sitting in a pew don’t think of themselves that way, but biblically, every believer is a minister. So how then does God prepare His people to serve Him? There are many answers to that question, but there is one fascinating passage in the Old Testament that gives us a living, breathing example of how God shapes one man for ministry, and that man was called Elijah….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Today's Episode: God’s Standard for Bad Behaviour. (1 Kings 15:16-16:34)One of the remarkable things about Scripture is the way God teaches us. Because He doesn’t just give abstract principles, he gives illustrations, he uses stories, and he shows us the lives of ordinary people.Last time, in chapter 15, God evaluated several kings by the standard of one man—David. But today, as we move into the second half of chapter 15 and on into chapter 16, something shifts. God still uses a human example—but this time, it’s not David, it’s Jeroboam, and that tells you something right away: If David is God’s standard of faithfulness, now Jeroboam will become God’s standard of failure because his influence becomes the yardstick by which the next generation—and the next, and the next, right down tio this day, is judged….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. That’s not a popular idea today, but it is a biblical one. But if that is so, then what standard does God use when He judges? What does that look like on a human level? Suppose God chose a person—a human being, not Himself, not His Son—and said: “This is the standard, this is the life by which I will measure others.” In the first 24 verses of 1 Kings 15, God does this. The cities in Charles Dickens' novel were London and Paris. I’d like to borrow that title—but with a slight twist, because today’s passage could easily be called: "A Tale of Two Kings". Because in 1 Kings 14, we meet the first two rulers of the newly divided kingdom of Israel—one in the north, one in the south. And their stories are not just historical curiosities. They are warnings. They are lessons in leadership, obedience, and consequences. I think we should all work at gaining wisdom, but obtaining wisdom isn't the be-all and end-all by itself. The extent of your wisdom is not the issue; it's what you do with the wisdom that counts. And that's what I want to discuss today. I’ve titled today's message "How to Be Stupid" because this chapter is a great illustration of that, if that is your aim in life….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Learning Wisdom from the Wise. (1 Kings 10: 1-29)
Send us Fan MailIf you want to increase your level of knowledge, there are plenty of things you can do. You can read a book, you can study, or you can listen to podcasts and watch videos. There are endless ways to gather information these days. But wisdom is different. Wisdom is not the same as knowledge. So how do you gain wisdom? There are many answers to that question, but tucked away in 1 Kings 10 is a simple, practical, often‑overlooked key to becoming wise. It’s not complicated. It’s not mystical, and it’s not reserved for scholars..... And it’s something everyone of us can do.In 1 Kings 10, the Queen of Sheba travels across the world to meet Solomon—and in the process, teaches us something profound about how to grow in wisdom….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Why God Blesses People. (1 Kings 9: 1-28)
Send us Fan MailIt really does appear that God exceptionally blesses some people. When you look through Scripture, you see it again and again. But perhaps no one illustrates this more vividly than Solomon. His life is marked by extraordinary blessings—wisdom, wealth, influence, peace, and the privilege of building the temple itself. So, the question naturally arises: Why did God bless Solomon, and what did God say to Solomon that might reveal why He chooses to bless anyone? Furthermore do we have to do what Solomon did, and if we did, would we receive the same kind of blessing? These are the questions at the heart of 1 Kings 9.... So let's explore why God blesses some people—and what that blessing looks like for us today….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. A Wise Model Prayer. (1 Kings 8: 1-66)
Send us Fan MailThree thousand years ago, a very wise man prayed a prayer. Not just any prayer—the longest recorded prayer in the entire Bible. And we still have it. Preserved word-for-word and spoken by a man that scripture says was the wisest on earth. Solomon also prayed this prayer on one of the most significant days in Israel’s history: the dedication of the temple. And because of when he prayed it and why he prayed it, and what he prayed, this chapter is by nature one of the richest lessons in the bible on how to talk to the Lord…Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Building Something that Honours the Lord. (1 Kings 7: 1-51)
Send us Fan MailWhat Does It Really Mean to Honour God? If I asked that question to a congregation on a Sunday morning, I suspect the answers would come quickly—and the list would be long. Some would say we can do that with worship. Others would say prayer. Some might mention giving, serving, witnessing, or obedience.... And all of those are good and biblical answers. But Solomon honoured the Lord in a way that you and I will very probably never be called to do. And yet, what he did—and how he did it—can help us think more deeply about what it truly means to honour God in our own lives…..Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. When God Interrupts Our Work. (1 Kings 6: 1-38)
Send us Fan MailThere are seasons in life when we become so busy—even with good things—that we can stop listening. Modern life makes it easy. Work piles up. Responsibilities multiply. The to‑do list is growing faster than we can cross things off. And before we realise it, the noise of life has drowned out the voice of the Lord. And—perhaps most surprisingly—it can happen in ministry as well. You can become so involved in the work of the Lord that you forget the Lord of the work. You can be doing the right thing, for the right reasons, and still lose sight of the One you’re doing it for. There is a moment in the Old Testament that captures this perfectly. A moment when God interrupts His own building project to remind His people what matters most. And it happens in 1 Kings chapter 6….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. The Essence of True Wisdom. (1 Kings 4 & 5)
Send us Fan MailToday, we’re turning to 1 Kings chapters 4 and 5. These chapters don’t just tell us that Solomon was wise—they show us what wisdom looks like in action. They give us a picture of how God’s gift of wisdom shaped a kingdom, organised a nation, built relationships, and prepared the way for one of the greatest projects in biblical history. The writer of Kings, probably Jeremiah, structured Solomon’s story to highlight the fulfilment—or failure—of earlier prophecy. In Solomon’s case, the prophecy is in chapter 3, where God promises to give him wisdom. And that theme will run all the way through chapter 11. In other words, the entire narrative of Solomon’s reign is, in a sense, a study in wisdom—how it works, how it blesses, and eventually, how it can be lost.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. If You Could ask for Anything, What Would You Ask For? (1 Kings 3: 1-28)
Send us Fan MailImagine—just imagine—that God Himself came to you and said, “Ask Me for anything you want… and I will give it to you.” Your first reaction might be, “Well, that’s not how God works.” And of course, you’d be right. But there is one moment in the Old Testament where God does actually do that for someone. God comes to a man and says, “Ask for whatever you want Me to give you.” And the way that man responds teaches us something really important about what we should desire—and what God delights to give. That story is found in 1 Kings chapter 3….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Who Put You in Charge. (1 Kings 2: 1-46)
Send us Fan MailToday we begin a new chapter—literally and figuratively—as we step into 1 Kings chapter 2. And this episode, I’ve made the title a question that I believe every one of us should ask ourselves, whether we think of ourselves as leaders or not: “Who Put You in Charge?” Now, you may not be the president of a company. You may not manage a team or sit in a boardroom. But almost all of us, at one time or another, have been put in charge of something—or someone. If you’re a parent, you’re in charge of raising children. If you’re employed, you’re responsible for your work. And even if none of that applies, you are always, at the very least, in charge of yourself—the choices you make, the character you build, and your direction in life. So let me ask you the question:What kind of virtues does it take to lead well? Because leadership—whether in a home, a workplace, a ministry, or a nation—requires something deeper than talent or charisma. It requires character. And 1 Kings chapter 2 gives us a front‑row seat to a father passing on that truth to his son….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. The Unlikely Winners In Life. (1 Kings 1: 1-53)
Send us Fan MailLife has a way of surprising us, doesn’t it? And nowhere is that more true than in our spiritual lives. We look at people and situations and think, “Ah, that’s the person God is going to use.” And then—He doesn’t. Meanwhile, someone we would never have chosen, someone we might have overlooked entirely, becomes the very person God raises up. So, how does God make His choices? And perhaps more importantly, how should we make ours? That’s exactly the kind of question the opening chapter of 1 Kings invites us to explore. So, settle in as we open 1 Kings chapter 1 and begin this new series with a story that reminds us that God’s ways are not our ways—and that His choices often surprise us in the best possible ways….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Introduction and Overview of 1 Kings.
Send us Fan MailWelcome, friends, to a brand‑new season of The Bible Project Daily Podcast. This new season marks the beginning of a fresh adventure. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be exploring the Old Testament books of 1 and 2 Kings, as I have set it out it seems the two books will take us around 50 episodes, teaching that I’ve drawn from my earlier sermons and bible studies these last decades, but revisited and now re‑crafted for this podcast format. These books of the kings are rich, complex, sometimes troubling, often surprising, but always extremely relevant. They show us what can happen when leaders rise and fall, when faithfulness is forgotten and rediscovered, and when God remains steady even when His people are not. But today, in this very first episode, we’re simply setting the stage for what is to come. So, settle in and let’s begin this new season together with expectation, humility, and a sense of wonder at what God might show us in His Word….Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Bonus Episode: Steven Pinker - The Blank Slate (2002). A Christian Reflection
Send us Fan MailThis is a between-the-seasons bonus episode. I shall be back again on Monday to launch our new season on the book(s) of Kings. Back in October 2025, I read and studied. The Psychologist and Philosopher Steven Pinker's book 'The Blank Slate. As part of a study group I belong to. This is my reaction to it, first made available as a 'Patreon Only' bonus episode.Title: Beyond the Blank Slate.Episode Notes:The Blank Slate by Steven Pinker is one of the most influential and controversial books in modern psychology. Pinker dismantles three persistent myths about human nature — the Blank Slate, the Noble Savage, and the Ghost in the Machine — arguing that our minds are not infinitely malleable, but deeply shaped by evolution and biology. From a Christian perspective, this raises important questions. If his argument about human nature is real, what does that mean for morality, responsibility, and redemption? Bonus Episode: Piers Plowman: A Cry for Truth in a Troubled Age.
Send us Fan MailThis is a between-the-seasons bonus epsiode. I shall be back again on Monday to laumch our new season on the book(s) of Kings.Back in April 2025, I read, listening too, and studied. This is my reaction,, first made available as a 'Patreon Only' bonus episode "Piers Plowman", was first published in 1377 and in it Langland asks the eternal question. "How are we truly saved?" This urgent question was particularly relevant when it was written 700 years ago because England was in the grip of the Black Death. But the question is still echoing today.Join me as I explore a strange and stirring medieval poem that confronts hypocrisy, grapples with sin, and ultimately points to Christ's radical grace.Langland's riddles aren't just literary; they're spiritual challenges for our time. Taking Pride in Appropriate Things. (Galatians 6:11-18)
Send us Fan MailThroughout this letter, Paul has been in a battle — not a personal one, but a doctrinal one. These Jewish legalists have followed him into Galatia, telling these new churches that faith in Christ is not enough, that believers must also keep the Mosaic law — especially circumcision — to be right with God. Paul has argued passionately, relentlessly even, that justification is by faith alone. Now, as he reaches the end of the letter, he picks up the pen himself and summarizes the entire controversy in a few powerful sentences.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Living a Life in the Spirit. (Galatians 6: 1-10)
Send us Fan MailIf you go online and visit a poetry site, you will find 10’s of thousands of poems that attempt to define “love” for us. You find poems that say things like “Love is gazing upon a pool at night, bathed in shimmering moonbeams, roses in full bloom, etc…”It seems to me that for many people, love is a sort of vague, dreamy, emotional fog. But Scripture refuses to let love remain wallowing in the swamp of abstraction. If love is going to replace a religious code — as Paul insists it does in Galatians — then we need something far more concrete than moonbeams and roses. However, in these closing chapters of Galatians, Paul has told us that the entire Christian life is “faith working through love.” In 5:13, he says, “Through love serve one another.” In 5:22, he says the fruit of the Spirit is love. So, love is the new standard of conduct for the believer. But that raises a crucial question: What does real love actually look like, and how do we practice it?What does real love do?...Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Life in the Spirit. (Galatians 5: 13-26)
Send us Fan MailI once spoke with a woman who had spent years in a church a full of rules and regulations. When she finally moved to a church that simply taught Scripture without adding man‑made religious rules, she told me she felt something surprising: FEAR!Those rules, she said, had given her a sense of security. When they were gone, she felt exposed. I also remember a teenage girl I once met at a youth club who reacted the opposite way. When I told her we are not under the law, she said, “Great — that means I can lie to my mother, I can go out and party, and tell her I’m here at the youth club.” And that’s the problem. Whenever Christians hear that we’re justified by faith apart from any legalistic requirements, some people panic. “Won’t that give me a license to sin? And some say great, that gives me a license that means I can do whatever I want?” So, if we are not under the Mosaic law, what guides our conduct? That is exactly what Paul answers for us today in the second half of Galatians 5…..Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E.
